Horrors! Dollar Tree Pound Cake As We Knew It (Apparently) Is No More!
Just a few short months ago, one could buy a 10-ounce, New Jersey-baked, American Classic pound cake at DT. Plain, marble, lemon, carrot and/or another flavor that escapes me at the moment.
But now, American Classic is selling FIVE-ounce pound cakes, according to Dollar Tree's website. A full 50 percent reduction in size for the same hard-earned buck!
Scotties tissue is also cheaping-out at DT. Used to be a 160-tissue box, now down to a 146-count box.
WTF happened to that "booming economy" we were (lied to) about? More importantly, what to do re: the pound cake? What can we DO, what CAN we do?

my elder neighbor puts apple sauce, apple butter, jellies on pound cake and has with tea. at other times slathered with pb or frosting. looked awful. I heated a slice in microwave and with butter and was o.k. once

16 ounces is a pound! They shouldn’t be allowed to call it pound cake if it weighs less.

With all that is happening in America I share your priority to be concerned about the size of a cake.

Take one pound of sugar, one pound of eggs, one pound of butter and one pound of flour.
Mix, bake and enjoy.

I bought one of those cakes back when the DT threads started as a taste test. Blech! It had a distinct chemical taste. Didn't even remotely taste like a real pound cake. I assume because there was probably not one ounce of butter in the thing. I took 2 bites and threw the thing in the trash.

Can you make pound cake with teff and margarine? I wish I could try some pound cake, but I'm gluten-free and lactose-intolerant.

Here's a good gluten free poundcake recipe. I don't know about using "Teff", but I have doubts it would work. But you can buy gluten free flour at most any market these days. And yes, you can easily substitute margarine for butter. I've had scratch poundcakes made from butter and margarine and the difference in taste is very minimal. In fact some people prefer the ones made with margarine. The flavor in pound cakes comes from the flavorings used (vanilla and/or almond extracts). The butter or margarine is just for texture, moisture, and fluffiness of the cake.

I can make a real poundcake from scratch the same size as the original DT pound cake for $1.00 (or less). Therefore, to pay $1.00 for their horrid tasting confection is ridiculous.

Per my photograph at R9, I wonder if 99c store stole the poundcakes from DT. After all, 99c store is still selling them for 99c. Anybody know if they're the same brand? I never looked for them at DT, so I have no point of pound cake comparison.

I prefer pound cake for strawberry “shortcake” instead of real shortcake, or sponge cake, or angel food cake.

R28 Teff is a grain grown much like wheat. It was primarily grown in the area of Ethiopia but is now grown in Idaho as well. Like wheat, it can be ground into a flour.
A pound cake made with Teff would probably end up tasting nothing like a pound cake and would more than likely be so tough that it would be inedible. Teff would be better used to make breads, not light and fluffy cakes.

Is it tough on your teefs?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 14, 2019 6:29 PM

R32 It's tougher than cake flour or even AP flour. Granted, pound cakes are are denser type of cake, but a poundcake made with a Teff would probably end up being tough as whet leather.

Boxed mix cakes are not good. Although I do know a couple tricks to zhuz 'em up to the point they're almost undetectable from scratch cakes.
Add 1 box of dry Jello pudding powder to the cake mix. Use the pudding mix that is as close to the flavor of cake you're making. And instead of using oil double the amount called for in melted butter. And add one extra whole egg. You'll thank me next time you make a boxed cake mix. You'll end up with a much nicer cake that most people would never be able to tell is not a scratch cake.

The 99.99 Cents Only store is selling American Classic brand pound cakes for $1, the 10 ounce size. When I first noticed it a few weeks ago, they had lemon, chocolate, marble, and plain -- this week, only chocolate and marble were on the shelf. I don't know whether all 4 flavors will be back in stock, or whether the brand is being phased out, or what.

Years ago I would make a FABULOUS Pound Cake from a recipe in an old McCall's cookbook of my mothers.
It called for FOUR sticks of butter
EIGHT eggs
FOUR cups of sugar
and ONE pound of sugar for the glaze.
