Yeah, I thought of Alvin and The Chipmunks as well.
Part of it is his youth. Part of it is he hadn't trained his voice to sound more "butch." Kind of like the way the actors from "Supernatural" underwent voice training for the same reason. Especially the shorter one. Also, with more star power there comes more post production to make the star fit to a certain image. At one point, if you hired Tom Cruise, you also had to hire a Scientology "sound system" or whatever they called it which was mostly used to tone down Cruise's not quite heterosexual noises.
