The DL tennis thread cover boy jinx seemed to have worked for Thiem in the last thread. I like Thiem though. Perhaps it will work for "Nole" and A. Zverev (who was the co-cover boy in the first thread). Thread III will have the person requested in the last thread.

Djokovic is not wrong to be frustrated with the lights. If you've ever been on those courts and looked up, you see how powerful they are to light a stadium.. You add the reflection from the sun off the lights from a different direction, all it takes is for you to move to a certain point and suddenly you've got shifting glare in your eyes. It's hard to adjust. Anyone who has lived closer to the poles knows this. The sun's position in the sky is slightly different at this time of year, enough for it to be a problem.
That said, Djokovic's behaviour was making it worse.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 19, 2019 6:57 AM |
Djokovic is a highly strung diva who puts on a great smile when everything goes as it should. He is also a highly strung diva who lets out his natural inner cuntitude when things don’t go his way. In this sense, he and SWilliams are twins separated at birth.

by Anonymous | reply 88 | January 19, 2019 8:29 AM |
What are you talking about? Set 1 Venus was running corner to corner; painting lines with forehands. She played well, but Halep defended like she usually does and wore her down. The sisters matches usually feature 5-shot rallies and loads of sloppy mistakes. You're right about the 2nd set though. Not great -- even though the score was closer.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | January 19, 2019 8:35 AM |
Sorry DLers! Titsy goes bye bye in the next round.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | January 19, 2019 8:42 AM |
Venus was pooped within the first twenty minutes of the match. The first two matches followed the same pattern. She plays sloppy long enough to play three sets. She wins but she has no gas left for later rounds. Pretty predictable. She played poorly today. Halep played well enough but she didn’t need to do much. Venus’ return of serve was a mess. How many returns did she hit into the net? She was spraying forehand errors all over the place. Her second serve was a sitting duck and she was gifting points with double faults.
I think that’s what r87 was taking about.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | January 19, 2019 8:52 AM |
Yeah Venus was truly horrible today. But the sheer number of forehand errors makes me think that arm injury is more serious than it seems. She was even trying to hit moonballs at one point which she never does. It was good in the past two rounds though, so i'm not sure what gives? I mean she's always a bit awkward-moving these days and not as tactically sharp as she used to be (when she was young she was so athletic and accurate she didn't even NEED to think about tactical play). So that was no surprise. But I can't remember ever seeing her missing that many basic forehands.
On the other hand Simona was way better today. Killing it on return of serve, a defensive wall, hitting DTL winners (a bit easier against a flat footed Venus but still), and not even doing that fake grunt!!!
It's nice to see Timea Bacsinszky back and pushing Garbine's buttons. If this was on clay she could be endangering her even more.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | January 19, 2019 8:58 AM |
Gonzo is Gone-zo! Garbine needs those points.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | January 19, 2019 9:14 AM |
R91 She was +1 on serve for the match. 5 aces, 4 doubles (2 of which were in the last game) So +3 for the majority of the match. Not terrible...even for Venus. And compared to the tour average, probably fantastic.

I hate to use the word, but Muguruza is kind of known as a bitch on the tour. Antisocial, a sore loser, selfish, etc. She used to play doubles with Carla Suarez Navarro and they even made the final of the YEC together a few short years back. When Garbine beat her the other week in Sydney it was a one second handshake and she looked away lol.
I remember Alizé Cornet in an interview saying that she was the least friendly person on the tour. This was even before the '25 languages' drama with Mladenovic. I think she's just naturally antisocial and kind of up herself.
The only person on the tour who really likes her is Cibulkova, who is a horrible sport herself (with the added disadvantage of being trashy too). Just two divas who think they are better than everyone else.

Who are the players that played the Williams sisters back to back before?
by Anonymous | reply 132 | January 19, 2019 7:34 PM |
Pliskbot beat Venus then Serena at the '16 US Open. I think it was back-to-back and included saving match points against Venus.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | January 19, 2019 7:36 PM |
She would also brag about her languages in her 'Kiki's Column' section on WTA/ESPN/Eurosport (I can't remember) which is now defunct since she barely wins matches in ITF tournaments these days lol.
That Muguruza FO match was very tense, and she kept saying 'Forza', 'Vamos', 'Allez' etc. Even the crowd kept chanting 'forza' even though she's French. Muguruza was the defending champion and the crowd was brutal to her. When she lost she left the court shaking her finger at them and shaking her head.
In the press room Muguruza cried at first when asked about the crowd, and when she came back into the room and composed herself she made some sassy comments about how "I heard she speaks 25 languages or something". The journalists all gasped and laughed.
Kiki has barely won a match since.
It's also mentioning that there was a LOT of bullying towards Caroline Garcia from the other French bitches. Some of it borderline racist and classist, and making fun of her relationship with her father/coach. Most of it resulted from Garcia not participating in an edition of Fed Cup, which really stung them because Garcia really CARRIED the team. Winning all her singles matches in the previous 2 years and doing the lion's share of doubles work (Kiki choked the deciding doubles for them on serve in the final). When they ended up losing because of that I think she'd had enough of working her ass off for such a mean-spirited and cliquey group, and all of them including Parmentier and Cornet kept writing subliminal messages on twitter and making snickering remarks about her.

R131: True, but that day Muguruza had reasons to be angry, because Kiki's behaviour on court was awful. I think the 25 languages was sassy and funny and Mldenovic in fact deserved way more

Thanks, R131, R134 and R135.

Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters and Karolina Pliskova have beaten both Williams sisters in the same tournament. I think that's the end of the list.
WAIT also Jelena Jankovic in Rome 2010 who beat them consecutively and then lost to María José Martínez Sánchez in the finals.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | January 19, 2019 7:46 PM |
Isn't Mladenovic's linguistic ability down to her parentage rather than the fact she finished school?
Speaking one of the Yugoslavian languages usually means you can speak/understand the others, so it's a bit of a cheat's claim.
I speak Swedish so can understand Norwegian and Danish but I wouldn't claim fluency in them.

Could we please, please put Nole as cover boy on the next thread? His behavior shouldn’t be encouraged. Say what you want about Nadal, but at least he’s consistently praised for being nice to everyone at tournaments.

What is going on between Tiafoe and Young Grigor? I switched to Tennis Channel when Jim Courier was finishing talking about some information or investigation involving them.

Double-fault at match point.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | January 20, 2019 3:04 AM |
Barty is another lesbian headcase in tennis lol joining a long line of them. Last week she choked massively against Kvitova in Sydney. She should have won that title.
but THANK GOODNESS SHE WON TODAY.
Bye Cuntapova!!!
and lmao the crowd rightfully booed that bitch repeatedly. When she took that 7 minute bathroom break, the crowd let her know upon her return to court. Then they cheered her double faults. She's not used to that (except occasionally at RG).
To be fair Sharapova was awful. Barty was very up and down. Glad she won
by Anonymous | reply 162 | January 20, 2019 3:06 AM |

Look at Tiafoe being clutch! Both players had a chance to win the first 2 sets but Frances has held his nerve just a bit more so far. Nice to see him improving in that department. I know Grigor isn't an example of mental toughness but he's still a top player so this would be a great win for Frances if he can get 1 more set
by Anonymous | reply 167 | January 20, 2019 3:11 AM |

Cliff Drysdale was practically rooting against Sharapova especially in the third set lol it was hilarious. He's not usually so biased but her grunting and bathroom break clearly annoyed him.
Chris Evert kept bringing up how Sharapova "hasn't been the same since her drug suspension". She mentioned it at least 3 times lol

by Anonymous | reply 191 | January 20, 2019 4:03 AM |
Kerber couldn't have gotten an easier draw. Her first three opponents actually DO play in ITFs for most of the year, and Collins hasn't won a match in a grand slam before this one (plus literally all her points were from 2 tournaments, Indian Wells and Miami). How is she getting such a beatdown?
Maybe all you need to beat the highest ranked lefty in the game is a good backhand?
by Anonymous | reply 192 | January 20, 2019 4:04 AM |
Watching Collins and Kerber reminds us of how much depth there is in the WTA. Compelling.

Sloane is lazy as fuck though... I don't trust her to beat Collins. Also who knows if she'll even make it past Pavlyuchenkova, who almost had her on the ropes in their last match?
Collins IS cocky. Does anybody else get Jennifer Capriati vibes from her? The bad attitude, the vicious demeanour, big groundstrokes, the cocky strut around the court.

I remember a Miami final where Capriati had like 8 match points against Venus, and Venus saved them all and won the match with some incredible play, really painting the lines. Even though Venus is also a Miami girl and had won the event twice, the crowd were vehemently against her, cheering her errors/DFs and really getting behind Capriati. It was really sweet when she lost.
Collins' soap opera stare-downs today remind me of Capriati in that match lol. Except she was actually winning.

I saw Collins play Sabalenka at the US Open last year. It was a 1R match, and there was a lot of buzz around Sabalenka because she had just won the New Haven title and cracked the Top 20. It was a decent match (Sabalenka won 6-4 in the 3rd set), but what struck me was the confidence(?) Collins had on court. I'm struggling to find the right word for it... I want to say "attitude" but that comes off more negative than it is. She's not rude to her opponents or anything, but just has this self-belief and it really shows in her on court demeanor.
It might turn off some people, but I like the fact that she's not moaning and groaning, looking to her coach for signals, or crying into a towel at changeovers.

If you see more from Collins i'll think you'll find her attitude a bit more than just 'self belief'. In a lot of the smaller tournaments she's been very cunty. Give her a little more time on tour and we'll be feeling the same way about her that we do about Colleen Vandeweghe, believe me.
Though like Coco she seems popular with the other girls from Fed Cup like Alison Riske, Shelby Rogers, Sonya Kenin, etc.

I remember the great old days when we girls used to play Fed Cup. We'd compare notes on all the men on tour and wonder whether they did the same about us during Davis Cup play. (Sigh) I miss those times.
by Anonymous | reply 265 | January 20, 2019 5:52 AM |
Coco is cocky too but she's more argumentative, whiny, and self-pitying. She also pulls the "i'm extremely injured" act when ever she's losing. And she's fat too, unlike Collins.

How so? To her team (like Murray)? To the umpires (like Roddick)? To other players (like Sharapova)?

I thought Barty was an out lesbian?! Wtf?
by Anonymous | reply 269 | January 20, 2019 6:33 AM |
R268 to the umpires (she had several long arguments during the US hard court season last year, even at Mubadala where she made the SF), screaming 'come ons' after her opponent's errors, fistpumping when they double fault and most noticeably of all is when she's down. She will go into these long speeches at herself and loudly yell "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU" etc. That doesn't sound so bad but it's very regular and often quite time consuming, it could be construed as a distraction to the opponent (which I don't think is the intention but a possible effect).
She's already smashed a few racquets too. Her "get used to seeing me win" post match interviews are a bit nauseating as well. I remember at the USO a few years ago she won the first point against Halep and SHRIEKED "Come on!" and even the American commentators said 'that's a little much for the first point'.
I don't hate her or anything personally. She's big for animal rights which I like, and her backhand is really nice, plus the tour always needs a good villain. But I can understand why people don't like her. Between her arrogant attitude, on court 'intensity' (let's call it that), her beating everyone's faves from time to time, and her tacky jewellery line she just started....

Tsitsipas is fun to watch. He's got that "it" factor.
and he feels like he belongs which is so important for the younger players. The middle generation (Nishikori, Raonic, Dimitrov etc) never really developed it.

Bautista was up a break in the first serving at 5-4. :( Why does he keep blowing chances and prolonging matches? This was a great chance to make his first ever slam QF (in the form of his fucking LIFE) and he's let the big serving monobrow back in.

Tsitsi's movement is so graceful for his height. He looks gangly and awkward between points and admittedly he gets into some uneasy positions, but he just GLIDES around the court. I can't think of anyone who jumps as well as he does for an overhead.
Super happy for RBA. What a moment for him, his ranking doesn't show it but the kind of form he is in so far this year is worthy of the top 5.

Q. You took meldonium legally for ten years to deal with your health problems. Now that it's banned and you can no longer take it, is it a struggle physically to deal with the demand of a grand slam fortnight?
Maria Sharapova: Is there another question?
by Anonymous | reply 302 | January 20, 2019 9:28 AM |
Brotherly advice from Dimitrov to Tiafoe: It's just a long way to go. I know how is it to break grounds on those first tournaments, especially a Slam & all that. He really needs to just stay calm and make sure he follows the right path.

So funny the last time they played when Sloane called her a fat bitch and the camera caught it. So funny to see two of the least hard workers on the WTA face off again.

Fed and Cilic out of the top 5 is good for tennis.
Also Sloane had a chance to be #1 after this week and now she won't, which is also good news considering how half-assed she is outside of the big events (and even sometimes in them....).
by Anonymous | reply 352 | January 20, 2019 2:41 PM |
R319 It is not only Tsitsipas but also Tiafoe. Tomorrow another chance fir Next gen as Coric faces Pouille. I do not think Medvedev has a chance to take a even set from Rafa but he did stop him at Wimbledon some 2 years ago. Zverev will have no excuses if he doesn't reach at least QF

I think the reason Roger is playing the French this year is he wants to play it one more time before he retires.
I adore Roger, but I think now is a good time as any to retire. He could do limited schedule that includes Laver Cup, and Davis Cup.
by Anonymous | reply 359 | January 20, 2019 4:26 PM |
One loss does not mean he should end it now. If he keeps struggling at slams then maybe because that's all he cares about. He should at least till the end of 2020 since it's an Olympic year.

by Anonymous | reply 368 | January 20, 2019 5:29 PM |
So is this the Slam that Next Gen finally wrests a title from the Big Three? (Shut up, Judy.)
Obviously Djokovic and Nadal are still the top two seeds and favorites, but Tsitsipas looks eager to make an impact, and Zverev has had an easy route to the 2nd week for the first time ever. (Plus, I've been waiting for Medvedev to get his first big scalp... he's beaten a lot of very good players in the last year, including a 3-0 h2h vs Tsitsipas.) And Coric is still in there, but getting little attention from the commentators.
I think this could be the changing of the guard.
by Anonymous | reply 369 | January 20, 2019 5:30 PM |
I think Federer is playing RG because (depending on seeding) if he gets to the final, only to then be beaten by Nadal, he can still say "Look, on clay I'm still better than everyone else apart from the clay GOAT".
by Anonymous | reply 370 | January 20, 2019 5:30 PM |
Tsitsipas will likely have to beat Nadal and then Nole in order to win the title. Has anyone ever beaten all three Bigs in the same tournament?

Barring injury, Federer will NOT retire this year. He is definitely aiming to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, since the Gold Medal in Singles is the only thing missing from his resume. But... I feel certain that he'll skip clay in 2020 to limit his schedule and prepare for Tokyo. So my guess is this will be his final Roland Garros.
by Anonymous | reply 375 | January 20, 2019 5:40 PM |
R352: She makes look Muguruza like a very dedicated player
I don't think Roger will retire before Tokio, unless he is not competitive anymore. It's obvious he is going to face more and more oposition to reach the final rounds but he is still able to play good tennis
by Anonymous | reply 376 | January 20, 2019 5:54 PM |
I'm so happy that Tsitsipas and Tiafoe have fucking stepped up at this tournament. They haven't had easy draws since they're not top players yet. They've both been so clutch whereas in the past they often choked winning opportunities. I don't expect either to beat Nadal but I'm hopeful.
I'd be fine if any of the guys left won the title except Nadal and Djokovic because it's time for someone different.
Coric has been playing decently. too. The other day against Krajinovic he was hitting his forehand with a lot of pace which sometimes he doesn't.
Slaone should feel embarrassed about losing to fat ass Pavlyuchenkova. Yes she is a good ballstriker but she's not that good of a mover and not that consistent. I expected it though because Sloane has not played well this year. She didn't look good in any of her matches this week. Martic gifted her the other day. Hopefully she improves her form soon. Sloane has the ability to be #1 and win a lot of titles but her mindset isn't right yet. She's currently taking a break from her coach though so maybe that drama is affecting her play.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni just entered Indian Wells, Miami and Charleston. The kween is back. Halep better glue her wig on tight!
by Anonymous | reply 378 | January 20, 2019 6:02 PM |
Fed is probably playing at RG and likely other clay masters because he needs points to stay in top 10. It’ll be really interesting to see what happens at Indian Wells and Miami this year. I wonder if Djokovic will dominate? If Rafa wins AUS and wins RG he will be one grand slam title less Han roger wih 19. Rogers 20 titles is now very vulnerable as will be his hold on GOAT.
by Anonymous | reply 379 | January 20, 2019 6:04 PM |
Lucic has been trying to recover from a shoulder injury. I don't know if she had surgery

Raonic has looked pretty good so far so I expect his match with Zverev will be a tight affair
by Anonymous | reply 384 | January 20, 2019 6:14 PM |
I find Raonic oddly sexy, despite his weird hairlessness.
His game is boring as fuck though. Zverev is definitely the better player and capable of more 'exciting' tennis, which he'll need against Raonic's brute strength and power.
by Anonymous | reply 385 | January 20, 2019 6:22 PM |
Zverev is a way better player than Raonic (at the beginning of his career Raonic seemed to be able to be way more than a serve, but that never happened) but if Milos is having a good day with the serve i wouldn't be surprised if Sascha ends losing.
Rafa and Nole are the big favourites, but i think they are very far from being untouchable. Rafa can't be in really good form, but he starts his matches very concentrate and with advantage. This is one of the few times that he probably won't prevail in a long match. He is totally unchallenged till now. I doubt Tiafoe has a chance, Tsitsipas on the other hand if he plays a good match could be a rival (unfortunately for him Rafa can be a nightmare for players with one hand backhand).
Nole showed some signs of not being at his best against Shapo. There are still very good players on his part of the draw and we'll see if he is as resolutive at tight matches as he was in the second part of last season
by Anonymous | reply 386 | January 20, 2019 6:31 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 388 | January 20, 2019 8:10 PM |
R387: Exactly, i think it's important they dethrone Fed, Nadal and Nole. If they reach the top only because they retire it would be bad for the sport.
And i think it would be great for tennis if Tsitsipas become a top player, he is different from the rest
by Anonymous | reply 389 | January 20, 2019 8:25 PM |
Titsi played fearlessly and aggressive. He deserved to win. Fed has nothing to be embarrassed about he still made some brilliant shots. He is still a top 10 player.

Whether or not the Guard has changed, I'm liking the current mix of NextGen players this deep into the draw. Tiafoe, Tsitsipas and Coric are much more fun to watch than the Big 3...or is it still Big 3 with Federer now at #6 and without a GS title or even final for the last four Slams?

damn I was hoping for another Keys-Osaka match
not excited about Svitolina vs. likely Sevastova
by Anonymous | reply 413 | January 21, 2019 12:51 AM |
Osaka's good. She's improved so much the last year and should be an example for Keys .
by Anonymous | reply 414 | January 21, 2019 1:16 AM |
Keys is such an overhyped dumbass of a player.
by Anonymous | reply 415 | January 21, 2019 1:20 AM |
Why does Osaka not know to follow a great groundie up to the net? She has unnecessarily complicated so many points.
by Anonymous | reply 416 | January 21, 2019 1:25 AM |
Sevastova breaks back thanks to a terrible line call -- 3-3. She's so whiny and irritating.
by Anonymous | reply 417 | January 21, 2019 1:45 AM |
So many gifts from Osaka, but she manages to break and leads 5-3 (thanks to that serve). Hope she doesn't fuck this up.

by Anonymous | reply 424 | January 21, 2019 2:52 AM |
Don't get all the Fed hate here. I am a diehard Fedstan, and I am glad Tsitsipas won. Tsitsi played better; he deserved to win. I, too, would like to see a changing of the guard though. Fed is old (I am two years older than him so I know). He is a good 5-6 years older than Nole and Rafa, which is a lot. I don't know how he still manages to play at this level. He's had his time, and I also don't think he cares as much about winning as he used to and these losses don't bother him as much as people think. Not anymore anyway. He's got his family, his money, his legacy. I think he is still playing at this point, because he loves the game.

Zverev is looking very immature and petulant right now. Losing a set 1-6 to Raonic is embarrassing for a top player. Raonic isn't that great at breaking serve.
by Anonymous | reply 427 | January 21, 2019 2:59 AM |
Ramos is in the chair for this match. Zverev has already started pitching fits and tossing rackets. Curious to see if Ramos ever penalizes him if this continues.

A. Zverev is serving like A. Kournikova right now.
by Anonymous | reply 430 | January 21, 2019 3:03 AM |
R429 I think the tennis heads spoke to Ramos after that match and he'll be hesitant to be so aggressive with his umpiring again.
The umpire in the Federer/Tsitsipas match last night was being very heavy-handed with time violations right away and then just stopped. I wonder if he got some text message telling him to relax a bit

by Anonymous | reply 441 | January 21, 2019 3:23 AM |
Interesting. So a time violation does not affect a player getting a code violation. Zverev now has a time violation from the first set and a code violation for breaking his racket but will only lose a point if he gets another code violation (and loss of first serve if he gets another time violation)
by Anonymous | reply 442 | January 21, 2019 3:26 AM |
on the other hand, if a player gets a coaching code violation and then breaks his/her racket, that would be a loss of a point. So time violations aren't code violations. Good that we learned the distinction

Raonic doesn't usually break lower ranked players more than a few times a match, never mind FIVE times in just 2 sets so far against Zverev
by Anonymous | reply 446 | January 21, 2019 3:29 AM |
Ramos wasn't wrong in the Serena situation. She was getting coached, and Patrick admitted it. It's a stupid rule but it's still a rule.

When Raonic breaks you five times in a single match, it's time to sit down and take a long, hard look at what you're doing wrong with your career.

True, but every slam we hear this hype about Zverev, how it's just a matter of time for him to make that final push, etc. The first two sets of this match, he was at a level of a qualifier drawn to play Nadal in the first round, completely clueless and overwhelmed by the occasion.
by Anonymous | reply 482 | January 21, 2019 4:49 AM |
Interesting how Pliskova seems to match up very well against Muguruza. I think Muguruza has a hard time with the consistently hard and flat shots.
by Anonymous | reply 483 | January 21, 2019 4:51 AM |
R482 He wasn't overwhelmed by the occasion. That's absurd. He broke to start the damn match. The problem was that he couldn't buy a serve in the deuce court for the first two sets.

R485 Mugu was up a break in the first until a linesperson opened their yapper and screwed her over to take it away. So sick of linespeople messing up at big moments in matches. Zip it people!
Now Mugu's a bit tight and not hitting well. Doesn't help that Pliskobot got lucky about four times either.

You are 4 years too late to realize that. I knew that when she got defeated 6-4/6-0 in quarterfinals here in 2015 by Makarova. Halep was No. 3 or No. 2 in the world at that time.
She backed up her defeat by going out 6-3, 6-2 as no. 1 to Shaui Zang in the first round next year and 6-3.6-1 to Shelby Rogers as rank 4 in 2017
She can thank Lauren Davis for blowing multiple match points against her in the second round; last year.
So many people here criticize Jana Frett for tarnishing Grandslam. Very few people remember Lauren Davis contribution to it

No R512, Porna has a habit of flopping at grandslams just like Sasha . He had never won a match at AusOpen before 2019. He flopped hard at Wimbledon 2nd round last year after beating Roger at Halley . His performance at French open is lackluster even though clay suits him
Ovell all his performance at grandslam is underwhelming
Lucas is playing great but it is his lackluster performance which is causing him trouble

She is retrieving a lot of balls. And she is keeping at great length. She is hitting close to the lines but not at the corners. Hence she is not giving chance to Serena to make angles or be aggressive in every point
by Anonymous | reply 517 | January 21, 2019 8:29 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 518 | January 21, 2019 8:32 AM |
Porna Coric collapse is compelte .
If you look objectively. his loss is even more shameful than that of Sasha.
Milos has a great record at Slams including Aussie Open[SF]. Milos's ranking is low because of his injury last year not due to his performance. He is still a solid top 10 player. Milos has defeated quality players like Nick Krygois, Stan Wawrinka and PHH to reach Rd16
While Lucas was simply out of form . Zero win previosuly at Aus open . Came with zero win in 2019 terrible perfromance last year post US open . Only decent player he has beaten this year at Aussie open is Mikhail Kukushkin

by Anonymous | reply 527 | January 21, 2019 9:33 AM |
R510 to be fair, Lauren Davis' toenail fell off on her match points. The timing couldn't have been worse. On Jana Fett's, she actually hit the ace and it was in (hawkeye showed it as in) but was just too stupid and inexperienced to challenge. The luck Halep and Wozniacki get sometimes is unbelievable. Even if they win more slams I will never think of them as great champions or amazing players or anything. And Halep was actually on form for parts of this tournament. -_-
Sad Borna lost to that poubelle Pouille, but happy for Amelie Mauresmo to be able to keep claiming some coaching success. She copped a lot of homophobia back in the day, notably from Hingis, so it always feels good to watch her succeed.
I am so done with Kei. He's really going to win this in 5 sets isn't he? No wonder he's always injured.

It’s actually mutual whorin’, darlin’. Swilliams has had at least one Vogue cover, and she might get another if she ticks all the right boxes for GOATness. I think the only box left to tick is having a baby. What’s that you say, now? She did what!!??

I just came from the Williams/Halep match. I have never been impressed with Simona Halep’s tennis on television but she is incredible in person. Her movement and anticipation are incredible. Her form and accuracy were also on point. Once she got used to Serena’s pace, Halep was relentlessly aggressive.

by Anonymous | reply 531 | January 21, 2019 9:58 AM |
R530 I've seen her in person too and her fitness is wildly impressive, but she has to work SO hard to win a point. It's no wonder she's always injured and frequently gets into such long battles with tight scorelines (even when she wins). She's going to run her body into the ground. Couple that with her mental lack of clutchness, the illegal coaching from the stands, her sulky excuses every time she loses, and her negative on court attitude and I find her hard to root for.
Some of her on court coaching sessions are really cringeworthy too. Her refusing to listen to Darren saying she's given up, him saying weird shit like "be a tiger!!".... She's a solid player but not really a #1, and not really a threat to the other girls (except on clay where her fitness grinds out wins until she runs into any in-form hitter).

Rankings watch:
Djokovic, Nadal, and Zverev will be 1, 2, 3 in that order regardless of results. Nishikori back inside Top Eight, could finish anywhere between No. 4 - No. 8. Federer will be no higher than No. 6. Bautista Agut back into Top Twenty.
Still five women who can finish at No. 1 - Halep, Osaka, Kvitova, Svitolina, Pliskova. For Halep to hold onto No. 1, she needs Osaka and Kvitova to lose in the QF, and Pliskova and Svitolina to lose before the Final. The best Serena could do is No. 5 if she wins the title and Svitolina loses in the QF.

It's weird as well because everything Frances was doing badly at the Hopman (wild forehand, absolutely abysmal volleys) have been his strengths here in Melbourne. The sudden run of form is strange.
Pouille has now made the QF at all majors except the French. I wonder if he'll end up like his coach Mauresmo who was famously terrible in front of her home crowd, but could even win clay tournaments elsewhere? The pressure must be a lot.

What happened with the overrule giving the point to Nishikori? I could hear Cliff and Brad disagreeing about it from the next room.

I am heart broken for PCB . he is cuh cute guy. However he let that questinable call get him . He was leading 8-5. But after that call he didn't win any point .

Carreno Busta STORMS off the court after letting the ref have it.

How’s Nole doing?
by Anonymous | reply 548 | January 21, 2019 11:38 AM |
R545, PCB hit a sitter ball that was incorrectly called out by the linesman. Kei easily hit the ball into the open court. Instead of replaying the point, the chair umpire awarded the point to Kei. Drysdale said the chair umpire made the right call because there was no way PCB could have won the point.

It will be Nadal vs Djokovic final. Boring.
by Anonymous | reply 550 | January 21, 2019 11:59 AM |
I feel bad for Pablo, he's so cute when not all sweaty on the court and seems like a nice guy. Late bloomer, a workhorse who puts just as much into his singles as well. That call must have been so frustrating simply because it was that late in the match.
Happy for Kei but JESUS does he need to stop getting into these 5 set matches that he should be winning in 3. three out of 4 matches so far have all gone to 5. There's no way that doesn't take its toll eventually.
The Medvedev Djokovic match is very gruelling. I'm rooting against Djoko who I can't stand, although Medvedev is a bit douchey too (always getting into arguments). He looks a lot better with the facial hair, and also now that he's gotten rid of that thin, greasy long fridge.

Yeah Nole looks like he put on about 5-10 lbs. I'm liking Medvedev, he seems to be enjoying himself.
Can we think of another rallying cry than c'mon?? It's been done to death.

PCB left the court in tears, was still in tears at his press conference and the first thing he did at the was apologise for his behaviour.
The crowd didn't even boo him they'd been so impressed by the match and he's known as a really good bloke normally.

Pliskbot is no prize either. Remebr how menancingly attacked the poor umpre in Italy
by Anonymous | reply 562 | January 21, 2019 1:02 PM |
R559 Yes, he's very quiet but the guys really like him in the locker room. His outburst was a bit unexpected actually. I meant to say he puts as much effort into his *doubles upthread, accidentally wrote singles. I'm interested to see his press conference (this might be one time where i'd just accept the 10k fine and skip it, especially if he's still raw and upset).
One of the reasons the Djokovic/Medvedev match was so good was because they were both ruthlessly HUNTING for a break. Makes such a difference from the Anderson/Isner type players who sleepwalk through return games and merely focus on defending their serve.
Pliskova is awfully arrogant for a robot. Even two weeks ago in Brisbane before the final she said "she has nothing to hurt me with, the match will be in my hands." She almost lost it too but Lesia choked and then got injured when she fell. It's like last year at the US Open when she said "Serena behaves bigger than her game is", and then got flogged in straight sets.
Even just now the journalists asked her about the conditions, explaining that Muguruza said in her PC that she struggled. Pliskova's response? "I honestly do not think the weather was too hot. There were worse days. and in Brisbane, it was even worse. I am physically prepared. And if it affected her? I do not care about my opponents. May they even have broken legs."
Despite what I think of Serena, it'd be satisfying to watch her shut her up good on Thursday.

ESL/Zverev stan at R519, how is Coric's loss "even more shameful" than Zverev's? Coric didn't get routed in three sets like Zverev did, and he's reached the round of 16 in the last two Slams, which is more than can be said for Zverev. Also Coric (though he's had his moments) doesn't routinely smash his rackets and scream obscenities at umpires when things aren't going as he would like or when he thinks he got a bad call.

Porna has matured a lot I think. He seems calmer. Sad to see him go.
by Anonymous | reply 577 | January 21, 2019 4:20 PM |
Halep is pathetic to have not finished her off. All the second serve return errors in the 6th game of set 3 just gift wrapped it. Serena was clearly tired and all she had to do was make her play. And again, the favorable scheduling saves the bitch. If that had been a day match she probably would have dropped dead on the court.
by Anonymous | reply 578 | January 21, 2019 4:31 PM |
R563 Pliskbot had points for 5-2 in the 1st set and blew her 40-0 lead. Hardly "getting flogged."
I hope she tears Serena's lazy ass a new asshole. But since she played flawlessly against Garbine she'll, in all likelihood, have a letdown.

Can they both lose?
by Anonymous | reply 580 | January 21, 2019 4:52 PM |
I was watching highlights of the 1993 final with Seles and Graf. Unfortunately the angle of the camera is so different than they are now, but I was trying to figure if they hit as hard as the women do now (and what it would look like on 2019 era HD tv), and I conclude that not only do they, but they would beat most of the players now pretty easily. Do you agree?
by Anonymous | reply 581 | January 21, 2019 5:52 PM |
The speed was different because the raquets were different, but a Seles or Graf type of player will be lethal to all the "top" players right now, because they not only hit hard, they were able to think, their groundstrokes had a meaning. The wta is probably in one of its worst moments. A Serena out of form is still the big favourite to win anywhere, something that didn't happened a decade ago, where she knew for sure that if she was not at her best Henin or Clijsters will defeat her.
Zverev needs to change something, i don't know what happens to him but it's obvious that something is holding him back. What happens to him is not normal. One thing is not winning or not getting to finals and other very different is that someone who is able to defeat Roger and Nole, and win Masters 100 and being consistent the whole year, is unable to reach qtr GS after GS and year after year.
Everytime the match is not going his way he crumbles. And he doesn't lose against the big three, he could lose with everyone. And it's not the defeat, Milos in a good serve day is a really tough player to face, but he totally tanked the first two sets.
If Stefanos is able to reach semis (and he is the favourite) or even the final (defeat Rafa will be a totally different story, but in my opinion Rafa will suffer if he is really challenged, something that didn't happened yet) the pressure on Zverev will be inmense.
Marat Safin is totally right, the big three were able to dominate because the younger generations never step up for the challenge. The next gen is lucky that Nole, Roger and Rafa will get worse no matter what, but till now only Tsitsipas is showing a real progression. We'll see if he is able to face the pressure of the next round, and Nadal kicked his ass on the previous matches, but on hard courts he has more chances than on clay, it will depend of how he starts the match (in case he is able to beat RBA).
Tiafoe is showing his potential, but i will wait to see if he is able to show some regularity.
by Anonymous | reply 582 | January 21, 2019 7:00 PM |
Nishikori will likely be a fucking walkover for Djokovic in the next round. He's had a lot of long matches just to reach the QF
by Anonymous | reply 583 | January 21, 2019 7:14 PM |
R581 Without a doubt. There are no women today who would really challenge either of those two...maybe Serena and not consistently. This is why I have so much trouble enjoying the women's game as much as I try. That being said, the Sampras/Agassi era of dominance would never have come to be had they contended with the likes of Roger, Nadal, and Djokovic.
by Anonymous | reply 584 | January 21, 2019 8:15 PM |
you've got to be kidding. Serena and Venus owned Seles and they were competitive in the few matches they had as teenagers against Graf. Davenport was beating both Graf and Seles once she came into peak form too and she's not even a great athlete.
Now Graf would probably own a lot of the players who weren't powerful since she owned Hingis. Hingis had little trouble with Seles though.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | January 21, 2019 9:55 PM |
When Seles came back and was facing Venus, Serena, and Hingis, she was not the same player she was at her peak. Not saying she would have owned them, but her peak form would have made it a lot more competitive.
by Anonymous | reply 586 | January 21, 2019 10:08 PM |
oh peak Seles and Graf would certainly be competing with the best of the best from the last 15 years but they wouldn't be close to dominating. Graf even lost to Kournikova once and Kournikova was never able to beat Serena or Venus. Hingis also owned Kournikova
by Anonymous | reply 587 | January 21, 2019 10:24 PM |
Too much what-if with Seles for us to truly know if she could have dominated once the big babes showed up. I think most people think Peak Seles would have been competitive with Serena and Venus, but that's not just the physicality; it's the mindset. She was utterly ruthless. She lost all that with the stabbing, and became one of the nicest people out there.
by Anonymous | reply 588 | January 21, 2019 10:27 PM |
as far as the men's game goes, I think the slowing down of the surfaces has greatly affected who most of the top players became in the last 15 years with the exception of Federer. Obviously Federer can thrive on fast courts but he's shown he's more than capable to play on slow courts. On a fast court, I don't know how easily Nadal, Djokovic and Murray would have handled peak Sampras' serve. Sampras was so consistent with his serving and hitting his spots in the 90s. Likewise, Sampras would have a lot of trouble today on the slowed down courts as he never won RG or many clay titles during his day.
Agassi showed himself to be an all-surface player despite his reluctance to do much volleying. I think he'd definitely be top 10. Nalbandian was a lesser version of him. Both had great groundstrokes and decent movement but not a big serve. They were excellent at returning serve though
by Anonymous | reply 589 | January 21, 2019 10:32 PM |
R588 speaks the truth. The sympathy Monica gained from her stabbing made her much nicer - and unfortunately lost her ruthlessness which made her unstoppable. Even the few times she got into shape post stabbing. Only time I saw her that ruthless was the 1998 FO semi versus Hingis. You can clearly see the difference.
by Anonymous | reply 590 | January 21, 2019 10:32 PM |
if the hard and grass courts were as fast as in the 90s, players like Raonic would have slams and the likes of Karlovic and Isner would at least be a multi-slam finalist, if not 1 hit wonder
by Anonymous | reply 591 | January 21, 2019 10:34 PM |
None of the matches of the past 20 years on the WTA tour have come close to the quality of that Seles vs Capriati match in the US Open semis in 1991. Both played incredible tennis but Seles eventually crushed Capriati's resolve. Even years after that, Capriati claimed that it had taken her a very long time to get over it and that it really wreaked havoc on her psyche for a while. Basically, she said that she played at the level she had never played before and that even that wasn't enough against Monica.

So much Seles worship. I respect her but she is the grunt originator!!
by Anonymous | reply 593 | January 21, 2019 11:06 PM |
Seles worship among gay people especially - she was an outsider, a total original that was different from anyone and was a “freak” - unconventional genius game that no one had scene before. Not even the best athlete but incredible competitor. It makes sense that people who relate to those characteristics in their own life would like her. Also - any tennis fan agrees that when she came on no one had seen anything like it before. And even at 15 you could tell she was going to dominate.
