It's so hard to convey how little visibility there was for gay people. If you were gay, sure, he is obviously gay. But if you weren't gay, the gays around you kept mum and maybe the signs weren't evident or were deliberately ignored. I love that younger people cannot imagine how shitty things were. I know we have a long way to go, but at least we're progressing to seeing more than the dominant group in popular culture.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 19, 2019 2:01 PM |
George Michael had went on tv when I was ten. Young, my thoughts around him was very cute. I had no thought about no gay thing.

In the Midwest, there were no "out" gay people in my community. I first saw GM when I was 8 years old and had never seen a gay man before and knew nothing of gay culture. I didn't even know what gay meant. No one would tell me. How did anyone in small town America, especially a kid who likes pop music, know that someone was gay when no one ever talked about it and we didn't know any gays? Gosh, it was really a different time. Also, all the beautiful women in GM's videos didn't help clarify his sexuality.

r18, uhm, is everyone here just going to ignore that he said he was bisexual, but used the term 'gay' because he preferred relationships with men?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 23, 2019 2:56 AM |
R47. It's hard to say because he spent so many years in the closet and it was a very different time. Some of his girlfriends weren't real relationships but PR for videos and MTV. Also, he grew up in a time that wasn't as accepting of gays so while he dated girls and women, it's unclear if he did that because he thought he had to socially or because he was really attracted to them. As far as I remember from interviews, it took him a while to understand he was gay because of the way he grew up. But yes, I also remember him saying that while he had sex with men and with women, he only wanted to have relationships with men and that's how he knew he was gay.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 23, 2019 3:02 AM |
George has been dead for over two years. People still getting trigger over him.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 23, 2019 3:03 AM |
I was 12 when Wake Me Up Before You Go Go was released and I found both him and Andy super sexy. It was impossible to say who was gay or not at the time, besides Boy George, since most male singers wore tons of make-up and wore garish clothes. I suspected Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran being gay more than George Michael.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 23, 2019 3:05 AM |
George Michael was a music god. He's the face of the late 80's early 90's. His music will stand the test of time. The end of his life was really quite sad. I wish he could've found happiness. He was a lost soul.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 23, 2019 3:08 AM |
r48, I would agree with you if the interview wasn't many years after he had already come out as gay. Honestly, so much of the stuff he said sounds exactly like all the bi guys talking about how they are sexually into both but can only have relationships with women, only in reverse.
[quote]His argument is that although they have sex with other men, they are emotionally monogamous. But here comes another George Michael revelation... sexually, he swings both ways, "When I walk into a restaurant I check out the women before the men, because they're more glamorous. If I wasn't with Kenny, I would have sex with women, no question," he enthuses. "But I would never be able to have a relationship with a woman because I'd feel like a fake. I regard sexuality as being about who you pair off with, and I wouldn't pair off with a woman and stay with her. Emotionally, I'rn definitely a gay man."
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 23, 2019 3:24 AM |
A female friend of my old friend used to date George Michael in the late 80s. My friend told me in 1989 or 1990 that George Michael had ended the relationship telling the girlfriend he's now gay. My friend was a model and knew people everywhere. I assumed George Michael's girlfriend was a also a model.

I think the fact that every big 80s male pop star/group (Michael Jackson, Prince, Duran Duran, etc.) was being called gay helped to give George Michael a lot of cover. At some point, you just sort of learn to tune it out.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 23, 2019 3:44 AM |
I miss when male stars dressed flamboyantly, colorfully and imaginatively. Now everyone looks pretty normcore even the young people.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 23, 2019 3:47 AM |
If he really wanted to have sex with women after he came out then he would have; he has never been in a monogamous relationship ever. He was a sex addict. Couldn’t get enough cock ever. That’s just him talking bullshit which he often did from time to time. Also people tend to forget that he really struggled with being “gay” and that kind of shit doesn’t suddenly leave you whe. You come out.
To me it is clear he was gay; he just had issues about it even after he came out. He wasn’t some kind of homoeomantic bisexual or whatever
by Anonymous | reply 58 | January 23, 2019 3:50 AM |
R58. I agree. He also wanted to keep selling records and knew most of the people who bought his records and attended his concerts were females of a certain age. He didn't want to lose their interest by killing the fantasy that they had a shot. He was too smart of a businessman to say anything to completely kill the fantasy of the women who were his biggest fans. That was an issue going way back. To claim to have no attraction to women would make much of his music seem false to the women in the audience. Also, he was a tease.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | January 23, 2019 3:55 AM |

R59 good point. But not even that Ive met other guys who talk about women in a similar way; “oh I could fuck her. Easy” and it’s like then why don’t you huh? They have a masculinity complex about being “able” to fuck a woman even if they are queenie bottoms sometimes

George must be bi sexual, because some of you are getting upset at the thought. Not all gay people are the same. To be honest George said things in interviews that was insulting to gay people.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | January 23, 2019 5:18 AM |
That was part of what made George an alluring fantasy, an artist, and a great entertainer--he was so maddeningly unknowable. All these mixed messages and mixed signals seemed part of an elaborate seduction. "George Michael" was a stage name and an invented persona, after all.

He cruised me when I passed him on the Old Brompton Road in London, way back in the 80s. After, I would say to people that he was gay and they just wouldn’t accept it. Particularly before social media straight people could live in a bubble and very little would burst it. They were staggeringly naive. To the point of being wilfully stupid. How come only now so we get a documentary giving credence to evidence that Jackson was a paedophile ?

George mentioned this in one of his more candid interviews (with Attitude which is a gay magazine)....
"Later, the whole thing with Kathy was... okay, it was ecstasy-fuelled. But it was totally real. She was in love with me but she knew that I was in love with a guy at that point in time. I was still saying I was bisexual. It was a relationship that was basically fucked up. She was fully aware of my sexuality and when the drugs run out and I had to work, well, then the relationship ran out with them. And she was the only female that I ever brought into my professional life. I put her in a video [l Want Your Sex]. But I was e-d off my tits half the time. Of course she looked like a beard. I thought she looked like that myself at the time! I don't even remember how I felt at that time. It was all such a mess, really. My own confusion and then on top of that what I was prepared to let the public think."
by Anonymous | reply 91 | January 24, 2019 2:22 AM |
Oh, George was a HOT mess. A HOT HOT HOT mess who used the shit out of his ecstasy-fueled beards and got paid millions by MTV for it. He was a beautiful man and a talented artist. I still remember him writing the words "Explore Monogamy" on his beard's legs and ass in the "I Want Your Sex Video." He actually explained it was a serious statement about being faithful in relationships. HAAAAA!

by Anonymous | reply 93 | January 25, 2019 3:19 AM |
Yes and Yes. Yes, he would have sex with anyone, and yes he also had a type. I remember an article in some cheap rag with a story on one of the men he hooked up with, randomly. I was shocked that George's hook-up for the night was a fat old dude who didn't seemed bathed, not at all attractive and who lived in or cruised in a van with a dirty mattress in back! And yet, in relationships, George generally went for good-looking rent boys. Then, there was also the unfortunate story of George and his gimp mask at various hotels, too high to realize he had the wrong room and security was involved.

by Anonymous | reply 95 | January 25, 2019 6:57 AM |
No George had to get drunk and high to fuck men. Also some of these stories are from the Sun magazine. Like really this is your source for entertainment or proof. Also George said out his own month in interviews. That it's easy to pay for male sex That way when your finish they can leave. In the same interview George say that never paid for female for sex. It came natural for me with then. I couldn't do that to a female. Will look for that interview because George also called gay sex demeaning. I suggest that some of these poster read George's interviews and not the tabloid. Because I now see George in a whole new way compare to last year.

by Anonymous | reply 98 | January 26, 2019 1:48 AM |
Never could understand why George needed drugs to have sex with men. Being in the closet so long really messed with his head as well as being so good looking in his prime. Unfortunately George wasn’t able to find that someone special to make him feel fulfilled. The more he got lost the more he lost his ability to write magical songs. Too bad he didn’t have someone in his life to stand up to him and tell him like it really was instead of yes people. Of course, anyone with balls he eliminated from his life.

R112 Because it was nobody’s business - least of all fat fraus who masturbate endlessly to Elvis, George Michael and every other male they find attractive. Bunch of damn fag hags you obsess, stalk and threaten every one because - well. You’re a bunch of psychos. Why do you think gay men have pretend girlfirends? Yeah, stupid cunts *like you*. Anyything to get rid of you.
Not that it stops you dumb bitches. These days, you break into their houses, send death threats. You’re unhinged mental cases. And here you are. Endless posting your delusions. What a surprise. Go get a vibrator.

It was obvious but for the younger kids in their 20s reading here, this was the 1980s and early 1990s, musicians and rock stars, as well as people in society at large were all presumed to be heterosexual, and for musicians they were just thought to be eccentric or artists so they could act however they wanted. Also, society as a whole except for certain small sections of large cities was not accepting of bisexual and gay men. Most gay and bisexual men were very discreet, not super out, and we were out to certain people such as very close friends or family members; but not necessarily a boss, most co-workers, etc. There was no internet as we know it today, no social media, etc. people had privacy and this includes celebrities.
R114, Elton said he can tell when a woman is beautiful or attractive; but that he's never had any sexual attraction to a woman or any women. That's what it's like if you are gay. My friends who are gay men who have had sex with women, or who were at one time married to women said how it is like this, that they had to think about men the entire time in order to get aroused, finish, and often times they would make up excuses for why they did not want to have sex with their girlfriend or wife. They are not bisexual but are gay and back then when they were closeted or even in denial they thought that having sex with a woman would make them heterosexual, or that there was no way they could be gay/homosexual as they were not effeminte/cross dressers, etc. One gay friend of mine said how in the late 1970s as a teen/young adult he knew he was gay but had no idea how to go about finding men to have sex with, and he had a girlfriend at the time who he had sex with as it was better than nothing but that sex with her just showed him how he is gay and not sexually attracted to any women at all. He did not come out until he was an adult but this is or was common.
Back then being out as bisexual or gay-sadly was a career killer, and even Elton John did not officially come out until well into the 1990s. Also anything associated with bisexual and gay men was associated with HIV/AIDS. CK is gay, he identified as different sexual preferences-anyone remember this term before sexual orientation?-not because he was actually bisexual; but because of $$$, and his brand of designer clothes, colognes, perfumes, etc.
