Cohen has zero credibility and it's his own fault for that.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 18, 2019 3:22 AM |
Read the article R3. There’s a ton of evidence to corroborate.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 18, 2019 3:24 AM |
Cohen's credibility is not the main issue. The report says Mueller had information prior to Cohen's questioning.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 18, 2019 3:24 AM |
Every pundit is out on TV and Twitter saying that this is Watergate territory. Buzz Feed says they’ve seen documents that back up Cohen’s statements. If this story holds up, there’s NO excuse for the House to hold back on impeachment.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 18, 2019 3:24 AM |
Mueller knows SO much. His report is going to be a nuclear strike on Trump.

Most think this is enough to really get that conversation started, but I would have thought that conversation would start in earnest nearly 2 years ago and every day since, so we shall see.
To have Graham (and Murkowski? among others) vote to lift sanctions on Deripaska was surprising so at this point, I don't know what would have to happen.

R3
R4 is correct. This news IS NOT coming from Cohen, but from Buzzfeed, and is loaded with corroborating evidence. This is big, and Congress is going to have a field day with Cohen next month.

Rudy's damage control spin for tomorrow:
Business as usual in the Trump Organization. It wasn't my client as President who said this. It may have been a different senior member in the Organization also named Donald, but as I've said, the President hasn't committed a crime.

It's called suborning perjury and it's a federal crime.
If Mueller really has solid proof, Trump has a problem.

So this is why Rudy gave that whack-a-doodle interview with Chris Cuomo.
Some reporter at MSNBC is backing up Buzzfeed so it must be true. Now all the GOP has to do is figure out is whether they want to step into the lifeboats or go down with the SS Trumptanic.

There’s a show on now with “Shannon Bream.” Who the hell is Shannon Bream? Who is she replacing? Hannity? Bill O’Reilly? I’ve never heard of her.
I guess a pro life deminstration is much more important than the President of the United States being IMPEACHED. Who wants to hear about that? Not me.

Every time we learn another new terrible thing, we think, "This is it!!! "they" won't let him get away with it!" But they do let him. I am so fucking tired of watching the news media breathlessly report and discuss the most recent outrageous development. I wish someone would do something. I want the Senate to unite to get rid of that fucker. He is doing irreversible damage to our country. That sick fuck needs to be dropped from a helicopter with out a parachute. So does Mitch McConnell.I was reading about how the Senate could expel McConnell. They have sufficient grounds to do it, but they need 2/3 majority, 67 votes. I think we have maybe 10 Republicans who are fed up and would join with the Dems and that means we have to find 10 more. I know. But I can dream, can't I?

More specifically, it's called suborning perjury.
18 U.S.C. § 1622:

I'm hoping for both.

Normally the Republicans would have Trump's back on this....but the shutdown is making it tricky for them. They know Trump isn't going to budge on the wall....and neither are the Democrats....and Trump is getting most of the blame for this.
When the public starts to complain about not getting services because of the shutdown, the Senate GOP is going to be at risk.
And considering tonight's news, if Trump had half a brain, he'd use the shutdown as his exit to get out of the country before more shit hits the fan. He can say, "Look, I've stood firm on the wall, but it's too frustrating to see the safety of Americans be put at risk. They won't give me the wall...so I'm afraid I'm going to have to take Melania and leave because it's too hard to see Americans getting killed by all these illegal aliens. Farewell!"

It won't blow over in the media if the House pushes an investigation. Some media are already trying to ignore it -- CNN has underplayed it on their webpage, Inskeep at NPR is tweeting links to rightwing bloggers who "prove" that the story is sketchy, etc. -- but if the House starts an investigation, the media will almost have to start reporting on it seriously.

R46, he's probably talking about Jason Leopold, whose problems were well over a decade ago. He plagiarized in an article in 2002 (he'd credited the Financial Times as a source but only for small passages, not entire lengthy passages he used) and in 2006 co-wrote an article saying Karl Rove was going to be indicted by a grand jury, but he wasn't. That's about it. Saying he's infamous for making up sources is a bit of a stretch.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 18, 2019 12:51 PM |
He instructed Cohen to lie under oath to the Senate. It will be a telling moment when the GOP controlled Senate is forced to respond to the House's impeachment seems ever more likely. If suborning perjury is part of the articles of impeachment of Trump, will the Senators vote for the idea that it is not acceptable to lie under oath to the United States Senate?
Or will they shrug, bend over, and announce to the public that they are okay with having their own investigation and their own rules and federal law itself corrupted by lies and deceit?
If that is what they do, then it is high time to test in the courts the question of whether a sitting president can be indicted for violation of federal statute.

And for our "very concerned" friend upthread who doesn't understand how this could have been possible because "did Trump just not think we'd notice Trump Tower Moscow?", here's a Buzzfeed News article that helps explain it all.
It's from last May, by the same reporters who broke today's story. They've been working on the Trump-Russia story for months and months now. They know their stuff, even if you claim they don't.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | January 18, 2019 2:11 PM |
Yeah, Trump threatening Cohen's family is not only rotten but it's bizarre, considering Giuliani was just on television saying that Trump never committed obstruction of justice because "obstruction is doing something like saying 'I'm gonna break your legs.'"
Except Trump's obsession with threatening Cohen's father-in-law is pretty much exactly an "I'm gonna break your legs" kind of scenario.
They're all so dirty and ugly and stupid, it's embarrassing as much as it is scary.

R3, why did you make your comment about Cohen being a liar, when this story is about how the feds confronted him and other witnesses with the hard evidence they had before Cohen even said a word about it? Can you not read? Or are you just a troll? Explain yourself.
Lanny Davis, Cohen’s lawyer, declined to comment out of respect for the Special counsel. They DID deny that Cohen was in Prague, so they have a history of denying something that they say is factually incorrect. Obviously his non-denial is confirmation. I don’t think BuzzFeed is making this up.

First, Rump cares. Deeply. Cohen's father-in-law apparently loaned 20 million to a Chicago cab company. I don't know the details but trump wants us to believe there is criminality involved to deflect from his own crimes.
Second, he's threatening Cohen to shut up or he'll start in on his family. Obstruction of justice.
Third, how does he know so little about his own affairs (Russia? Tower? I know nothing about it) but so much about Cohen's father-in-laws business. Liar.
Rump is corrupt mob boss who needs to be removed from office immediately. He's dangerous and also transparent. He blames others for everything he is himself. "So it’s pretty sad. It’s weak and it’s very sad to watch a thing like that." Yeah, that's what we know about you, scum.

Cohen's father-in-law (Fima Schusterman) is not just a Ukrainian gangster -- he's a Ukrainian gangster with long-time ties to Trump himself. Cohen may have gotten his job with the Trump Org as a favor to Schusterman. Federal investigators suspect that Schusterman may have been a business partner of Trump, and steered "Russian investors" to Trump properties. By attacking Schusterman, Trump is admitting that he himself knowingly did business for years with a gangster.
This is toxic-level stupidity.

Sigh; I can't tell you how many times I've had my hopes up that the indictments of Jr., Kushner or even Ivanka was imminent only to have my hopes crushed. I'll believe it when I see it, but at least on the upside, it makes standing with Trump even more toxic for the Repig senators. And Nancy has demonstrated that's she got a lot of tricks up her sleeve for an old lady, so she'll take every opportunity to illustrate how cowardly they are. So at the very least, it strengthens the hand of the dems in the short term.

Daniel Dale:
It‘s possible to parse the Mueller team’s wording here, but they’re clearly saying at least some of the story is wrong. That should get major attention, especially given how very rare it is that they comment on anything.
In other words: the Mueller team’s wording leaves open the possibility that some of the story might be accurate. But the fact that they called substantial elements of the story inaccurate should be taken seriously.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | January 18, 2019 11:54 PM |
R143, the statement does not say that “substantial” elements are inaccurate. It says that “specific” characterizations of evidence were not accurate.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | January 18, 2019 11:59 PM |
I have the same interpretation as you, R143, but I quoted Daniel Dale because he's usually a very level head, and he sees it differently.

of course Trump is now crowing smugly with his tweets and retweets.
Off topic, but if Obama and Clinton would have largely ignored the deaths of the soldiers in Syria (no mention in twitter and spoke about them briefly before some armed services before quickly switching to his border talk) you think the GOP and the right-wing talking points would have said nothing on it?
by Anonymous | reply 151 | January 19, 2019 12:21 AM |
Susan Hennessey:
The good news about the Buzzfeed story mystery is we won't have to wait long to find out. The very first question Michael Cohen will be asked in his congressional testimony is "Did the President ever instruct or encourage you to lie to Congress or federal investigators?"
by Anonymous | reply 152 | January 19, 2019 12:24 AM |
Juliette Kayyem:
Clarity. For two years, stories, whether accurate or not, had no political consequences b/c Ryan didn't do anything. When House Dems start to take news stories as potential evidence to start essentially legal proceedings, Mueller's office has an interest in correcting.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | January 19, 2019 12:25 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 154 | January 19, 2019 12:30 AM |
To be clear: Mueller is not disputing that Cohen says Trump told him to lie. He’s disputing the line about corroborating evidence taken from Trump Org emails, texts, etc. Still a huge deal. But not a total refutation. In fact, Cohen’s 11/30 memo says Trump directed him to lie.

by Anonymous | reply 156 | January 19, 2019 12:32 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 157 | January 19, 2019 12:38 AM |
Daniel Dale is wrong. The statement does not in any way address the content of the story. This statement only talks about the way BuzzFeed characterized statements and documents in the possession of Mueller's team.
They're saying that BuzzFeed doesn't know what Mueller's team has, and when they said they did in this article, Mueller's team took exception and issued a statement.
There is absolutely nothing in the statement that Mueller is "clearly" saying is wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | January 19, 2019 12:40 AM |
BuzzFeed added the statement to its report, but suggested that the comment from Mueller’s office was vague about what parts of the media outlet’s story were being denied.
“We stand by our reporting, and we are working to determine what exactly the Special Counsel is disputing,” BuzzFeed spokesman Matt Mittenthal said in an email to POLITICO. “Stay tuned.”
by Anonymous | reply 159 | January 19, 2019 12:43 AM |
[quote]the Mueller team’s wording leaves open the possibility that some of the story might be accurate.
We already know for a fact that some of the story is accurate. There was a proposal for a Moscow Trump Tower that was never built and Cohen admitting to lying to Congress about the timing of the discussions. It's everything else that is unsubstantiated at the moment.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | January 19, 2019 12:44 AM |

DL Fave Ronan Farrow has weighed in on the story. Apparently he was chasing it down, but could not verify that the Cheetolini directed Cohen to lie
by Anonymous | reply 172 | January 19, 2019 1:54 AM |
Ronan's statement is interesting. His source apparently said Trump did not issue "repeated direct instructions" to Cohen.
That's the main defense for Trump right there. Saying that Cohen did it for Trump is accurate because Cohen has said so himself. The dispute is over whether Trump told Cohen to do it, or Cohen did it on his own for Trump.
Ronan's source saying Cohen basically did it on his own without direct instructions from Trump makes me incredibly curious as to who that source is. It could very well have been someone close to Trump who was hoping to advance the defense for Trump on this matter.

Trump didn't need to "repeatedly instruct" Cohen to lie. Once would have been enough. In fact a generic, "Don't tell those mutherfuckers anything. Lie. They don't have a right to discuss my business deals." How many times would he need to repeat that? I think Buzzfeed is essentially true. Trump's general directive to Cohen was to lie to COngress and anyone else. Period.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | January 19, 2019 2:16 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 187 | January 19, 2019 3:12 AM |
Again you guys are falling for the banana in the tailpipe.
Exactly how many times in two years have you sworn that the end is here? Now everyone realizes what a lying criminal he is? The Senate cannot continue to protect him now that it is so obvious he is a lying criminal right? He is losing support even from his own voters, right?
Wrong. His voters don't give a flying fuck about this stuff and they, along with the majority of the country, has no taste for impeachment.
The country hated the Republicans for impeaching Bill Clinton---even the Republicans who were none too fond of WJC. Elizabeth Holtzman said today, "the people did not support impeachment in 1998/99 and they do not support it now." Do you get that? Regardless of how much Data Lounge wants him executed and/ or imprisoned, the Democrats are not doing shit unless they feel it will help them in some fashion.
You people need to stop blocking everyone who is outside of your personal bubbles. You have completely lost what the temperature of the REAL people in the US is right now. All you do is jerk each other off with your hate porn dreams of how Trump should be dealt with. And eventually you come to believe that everyone feels the way you do, In your own way you are doing the exact same thing as Trump does when he discounts everything negative about him as "fake news." You claim that every word which does not match your narrative is "trolling" and does not need to be read by you or anyone else.
They don't feel the way you do. And there are not even close enough to the the amount of angry Dems calling for his throat for the House to do something which has the potential for disaster.
How about this: open your eyes and minds a bit. Face the facts that DL represents an extreme which is just as marginal as the religious freaks who believe Trump was sent by god to do his bidding and save Israel and its people. The true temperature of the country lies in between those two extremes. The middle believes that Trump has acted in a less than honorable fashion and some official sanctioning might be in order. But the notion of dragging the country through a protracted impeachment process which will produce absolutely nothing is unpopular with (almost) no one.

CNN’s Toobin and Anderson Cooper:
CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin called it a “bad day” for the media.
“What the reaction here may be is ‘the press screwed up. They should apologize. The media isn’t as great as it thinks it is.'”
He added: “This is a bad day for the news media. Let’s not kid ourselves. That statement is at least a partial repudiation of an enormously important story.”
Host Anderson Cooper then jumped in, noting: “Also, it’s a very bad day for BuzzFeed regardless of where this story goes. To the credit of other news organizations, everybody didn’t jump on the bandwagon saying this is true.”
Then, a little while later in the same show, Toobin stressed that the statement casting doubt on Buzzfeed’s reporting reinforces negative stereotypes about the media and, in his opinion, the takeaway for many in America may be that the media is “leftist liars.”
“My view is,” Toobin said — speaking once again on the Special Counsel casting doubt on the Buzzfeed’s account — “the larger message that a lot of people are going to take from this story is that the news media are a bunch of leftist liars who are dying to get the president and they’re willing to lie to do it. And I don’t think that’s true.”
He then said again: “This is a bad day for us.”

And every time a potentially disastrous report comes out, and that report amounts to nothing, the Trump contingent is more emboldened than before. They feel certain that the media is trying to sink his presidency(when in fact the opposite is usually true more often than not.)
It reminds me of the Pizza Gate crowd who follows that Q person. They are always holding their collective breath waiting for the shoe to fall which will exonerate Trump and vilify Hilary et al. We laugh at them(as we should)but it does seem that DL is following their model(just in the opposite direction.)
Not that I give a shit what anyone here thinks of my opinions, I actually am an old school Democrat. I have been banging the drum while leading the parade for Kamala Harris on other threads. That is why I doubt that many, if any of you. already had me blocked.
But that does not mean that I am living in the DL bubble. I just don't find that very smart. I want...I NEED to know what is really going on in the hinterlands as well as the more cosmopolitan parts of the country. I deplore the use of the term "Deplorables." and if you think that makes me a traitor, then you might be surprised to learn that there are many top figures in the Democratic Party in DC who wish to god that Hillary had never said those words. NO, Hillary wasn't wrong bitches, but neither is a person who says "I think Louis Farrakhan is a cancer in the black community." But if you are a politician representing a predominately black district, you can kiss your future goodbye if you speak those words.

R188, do you honestly think that when even more damaging stuff comes out — after Feb 7, after the House investigations get going, after Mueller’s report— the needle will still not have moved at all on Americans’ support for impeachment?
If the 65% of Americans who don’t love Trump now don’t agree in a few months’ time that Trump needs to be impeached, I will be very surprised. No one cares what Trump’s base thinks. He and his Party can’t win in 2020 with just the core nutballs still supporting him. Independent voters matter, too.
And anyone thinking Trump will win again in 2020 is just being hysterical.

R215 Here is where we disagree: I do not think 65% of the US voters who are not pro-Trump= 65% of the US voters who want to see him impeached.
As I said above, the Clinton impeachment is now viewed as a major misstep because the Reps who did not support Clinton did not want an impeachment. People here seem to believe that disliking an elected president means that the country wishes to see him thrown out of office.
I believe with all of my heart and brain that the majority prefers to see him serve out his term and then disappear from public life.

R115 I think the Russians are claiming Derepaska is no longer associated with his companies so it's OK to lift the sanctions. Not sure. as for R188? Please. A lot of people didn't really know or care about Watergate. It took public hearings on television to raise awareness and even then Nixon wasn't as universally despised as Trump is today. That's right. There are probably 60 or more of Americans that want him out. And of that % a lot of them want him to get indicted then just go straight to prison. LOL!
The shutdown is the final straw for millions of people. When he puts more than 800,000 out of work, as well as the contractors and subcontractors, it affects the economy and it has a domino effect on businesses all over the country. He has literally stopped the flow of money that is the life's blood of our economy. he is harming his own supporters too, with his trade wars and tariffs.
It's finally dawning on people. He is also losing support over his wall. People are beginning to realize there is no true crisis at our southern border. And now, "Oh, look, another caravan!" How convenient. I'm guessing Trump is going to call a state of emergency today. then he may or may not open government.
Personally I don't pay attention to the people who fling accusations at other posters about trolling. I'm a pretty intelligent person. I will decide who's a troll and who isn't. I'll decide who I'll block. I don't think you, R188 are a troll, Russian or Republican, or Extremist Conservative per se. I just thoroughly disagree with you. I think you're probably one of those Bernie or Trump supporters who needed to come in here and stamp your feet. That's my guess.
If most of us here hoping Trump goes down hard, it's only what we feel he deserves. He is a despicable, hateful , vile excuse for a human being unfit the lick the shit off my shoes. He is completely unfit for anything resembling a responsible position if leadership in securing the public good.

[quote]Mueller's office disputes the report that Trump instructed Cohen to lie to congress
ABSOLUTELY FUCKING UNTRUE.
The statement said only that BuzzFeed's description of evidence held by Mueller's team was inaccurate.
We already know Cohen lied for Trump, anyway. He said so himself to the court. The question is whether Trump specifically directed him to, and this statement does not address that one way or the other.
by Anonymous | reply 229 | January 19, 2019 10:56 AM |
I already have R188 blocked, so it’s an obvious troll.
by Anonymous | reply 230 | January 19, 2019 11:10 AM |
I think it's a lot simpler. Mueller's office never leaks. Right? The Buzzfeed report looks like a leak. Mueller's office issues a non-denial denial because they want to make sure you know they don't leak.
I just read Barbara McQuade's analysis in the Daily Beast, and she insists anything Trump and Cohen lied about was to hide a greater truth, so it's not just the lies they're telling, but the truth they're concealing.
I read Sarah Kenzior's twitter analysis. Kenzior made a broader point. Her succinct observation is don't get fixated on Mueller's rather vague denial, because the basic fact is that a Russian asset has taken control of, and shut down our government and he is consolidating power. That's pretty fucking chilling.
But she doesn't acknowledge the other assets who are enabling him. We have to deal with McConnell and right now the focus needs to be on him. The media needs to be told and we need to be pushing the members of the Senate to force his hand by any means necessary.
by Anonymous | reply 231 | January 19, 2019 11:17 AM |
First of all, if someone in Mueller’s office leaked to the press, he DOESN’T KNOW with any amount of certainty if they’ve seen the evidence he has. He can’t make any sort of statement of the nature he did because the media may very well have the evidence or heard it or seen it. His statement was damaging and stupid and a waste of time. It’s time he puts his cards on the table. He may very well have NOTHING. I’m not at all convinced he has the country’s interests at heart. He’s a Republican. Enough said. He’s not going to save us.
But it’s time to see what he has, and Congress needs to force it so they can decide what to do, and we can move the fuck on from this psychopathic moron currently in the Presidency. If Mueller doesn’t like it, too fucking bad. No one cares about these third tier nobodies being indicted and jailed. It’s time to shit or get off the pot. Take the shot at the leaders that you’ve been implicitly threatening for two years, or turn tail and slink off into the muck as I fully expect he’ll do.

The posts I made in this thread beginning with R188 were the first and only ones I have made since the cleaning. You could not have had me blocked. I don't care whether you like or loathe my comments, but why lie? I certainly don't care if you do block me, but again, why lie and say that you already had me on ignore?
Are you really so very bothered by someone who has a slightly different take on the situation? I certainly said nothing outrageous or inflammatory. If you really consider me to be a troll. then you truly are one very delicate flower.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | January 19, 2019 11:37 AM |
R232 the whole point of Mueller's office issuing a statement was to make sure we know no one from his shop, the Special Counsel's team, leaked. Period. That IMO was the point the Special Counsel's office was making. Now there are other ways for that information to get out through witnesses or their lawyers or other offices such as the SDNY, and at it's core it is probably true. And BTW, you're assuming a lot to say Mueller "doesn't know with any amount of certainty." Mueller definitely knows who in his shop has seen or has access to particular pieces of this vast investigation.
Considering how long this investigation has gone on, and how many attorneys and investigators are involved, it's very impressive that so little information and so few statements have come out from Mueller's shop. His operation is not goaded into having a dialogue with or through the media as the investigation unfolds, and I find their silence reassuring amidst all the noise people like Rush Limbaugh, and Rudy Giuliani and Lindsey Graham are making.
I'd rather he take his time and be thorough and get it right, air tight, than sloppy and fast. We're talking about Robert Mueller not Devin Nunes. It seems to me you might prefer Nune's method of investigating. LOL!
by Anonymous | reply 234 | January 19, 2019 11:53 AM |
Two years is not sloppy or fast. And given the gravity of what the country is going through, anyone in his office with an actual conscience could have leaked. Again, he doesn’t know. People lie all the time, including people on Mueller’s team, no matter how long he’s known them or how much he professionally trusts them.
by Anonymous | reply 235 | January 19, 2019 12:04 PM |

[quote] As I said above, the Clinton impeachment is now viewed as a major misstep because the Reps who did not support Clinton did not want an impeachment. People here seem to believe that disliking an elected president means that the country wishes to see him thrown out of office.
Please. The two situations are entirely different. Bill Clinton was a popular president who had a fair amount of positive accomplishments by the time the Lewinski scandal reached the impeachment phase. The public, while not approving of what he had done, didn't think that he should have been removed from office. The Repukes moved forward with it, nonetheless.
This situation is not remotely comparable. Here, we have a deeply unpopular occupant of the Oval Office who has accomplished almost nothing positive during his two years in office. He has lied to the public over 7,000 times in 24 months, and is surrounded by the stench of corruption and illegality. Should it turn out that tRump directed Cohen to commit felonies (both with the porn-star payments and subornation of perjury -- and who knows what else), he could not remain in office. The commission of multiple felonies of that degree of severity would require that he be forced to resign or be impeached by the House and removed by the Senate.
by Anonymous | reply 239 | January 19, 2019 12:45 PM |
Exactly, R239. I agree. And furthermore, Trump has committed impeachable offenses right out in public over the past two years. The fact that the Senate or the House has refused act on his actions is the only reason he's still sitting in the WH. And The House's investigative function and oversight under Paul Ryan were non existent. Right now all the President has is Mitch McConnell. That's his shield. This is war. And we absolutely must find a way passed McConnell.

by Anonymous | reply 241 | January 19, 2019 1:06 PM |
Too many media types seem fixated on the final report, but I keep saying pay attention to the indictments and the sentencing documents. What I really want is for Mueller to issue a scathing report telling Congress they have an obligation to impeach Trump who is a Russian asset and a clear and present danger to our country, and I want him to confirm the election was stolen and there are compromised Russian assets all over Congress and the WH. In my dreams! It will not go down that way. It ought to, but it won't. So the indictments and sentencing documents will give us most of what we need to know. The Report itself might simply be some editorializing and summarizing. I really do expect Mueller to chastise Congress for their lack of oversight. Mr Mueller, if you're reading this please kick Congress in the ass.
by Anonymous | reply 242 | January 19, 2019 1:14 PM |
I think the Mueller probe could last years and even be taken over by someone else when Mueller passes the baton. There is that much work to do. So the whole notion of "waiting for Mueller to complete his investigation" just doesn't seem practical IMO, and I want Congress to do their jobs. Oversight, legitimate hearings, and imoeachment.
There is a possibility that impeachment may not happen until January 21st, 2021.If true, he'd be out by June. Of course that pre-supposes he'd win re election. So let me say that the longest possible time we have to put up with his sorry ass is until then. But with some hard work and a few lucky breaks, we can push him out before then. But we need to force Congress to act, and we need to initiate proceedings to expel Mc Connell.

Josh Marshall, Talking Points Memo:
Today’s brouhaha recalls a simple point. Point of the Mueller probe is not to get to the truth or bring the facts before the public. It’s a criminal and CI probe meant to find and prosecute crimes. But what the country most needs is the truth, both about what happened ...
in the 2016 election and who President Trump works for today. Whether any individual person is incarcerated matters much less than figuring out the truth of what happened. Only congressional investigations or independent commissions can answer that charge.
It’s not either/or. We need both. But a full airing of what happened (and what continues to happen) is the critical need. And that’s not what the Special Counsel probe is designed to do.
by Anonymous | reply 247 | January 19, 2019 2:30 PM |

Don’t forget, Russia is no longer atheist. That was a YUGE talking point used against the USSR in the US. You were not allowed to go to church in the Soviet Union.. Religion is one of the greatest tools of control and suppression in the world. Religion doesn’t want people to evolve. Religion doesn’t want people to be secularly educated. Religion wants people to get all of their information & beliefs from their church..
Now that Russia has abandoned communism for oligarchy, Putin has shown himself in church and at orthodox Russian church conferences. This is a big draw to American republicans. They like their old fashioned religion & Russian Orthodox is an old fashioned church.
Christianity! The GOP uses Christianity like a toothbrush, making it part of their daily routine. It snags dumbos into their party. Are you stupid? Superstitious? A believer in absolute good & absolute evil and nothing in between? Self righteous? Self centered and believe that only the things you believe in are true and everyone else is wrong? Have we got a political party for you!
Russia being Christian and it’s ruler being photographed at religious events is A-OK with republicans. The people who are republicans will DEFINITELY side with Russia against American democrats. The Russian Orthodox Church is adamantly against abortion. American republicans have been brainwashed (by people who use religion for their own reasons) to believe Democrats are degenerate, atheist sex perverts who do the debbil’s bidding.
So yeah, of course they’ll side with Russia against Americans who don’t think they sane way they do.

But I also suspect that in addition to directing Michael Cohen to make questionable and perhaps illegal payments to porn stars, and directing him to testify falsely to Congress, Cheatolini has committed a laundry list of crimes. The more charges against him the better -- and lets hope that the House moves quickly as possible, please.

Some pundit on Bill Maher lastnight said , they have to be smart about impeachment, "If you come to kill the king, you can't miss." If the senate votes not to charge him, deplorables and Trump will use that as proof of his innocence.
But in the meantime, the drumbeat is getting louder and it's become more and more obvious. There WILL come a tipping point.

I don’t understand how the Trump Tower meeting in 2016 with the Russian agents was not enough evidence of collusion/conspiracy to charge Don Jr., at least. Maybe Jared, too. If Mueller doesn’t charge them, he’s going to pissoff a lot of people who will then question the investigation.

A political pundit I respect suggested that moving prematurely on impeachment is a waste of time and counterproductive. Instead, go for the death of a thousand cuts. Investigate every aspect of the Trump administration, something that Republicans refused to do. You'll keep him busy, confused, harassed, and wildly angry, even more prone to mistakes than he is now. He'll have a horrible time finding people to work for him, which will make it harder for him to do the kind of damage that a more competent administration would be capable of. And every revelation, and his responses, will render him that much weaker and that much more subject to impeachment should a real opportunity arise, as well as weakening his chances and Republican chances in 2020.
Nobody is seriously saying that Democrats should leave him alone. We're suggesting that they operate strategically, with a coordinated set of attacks that is likely to do more damage than a failed impeachment would, while at the same time gathering data for a potential impeachment.

R288, I think enough facts are already known. The House just needs to present those facts to the public so that it supports the impeachment. Even Republican Senators will support impeachment if their constituents are angry enough.
I just hope the House acts before.a NATO withdrawal is enacted, or other stupid, traitorous change.

Y’all have read the Washington Post story from today about the behind-the-scenes of the BuzzFeed News story, right? It just talks about the back-and-firth between BuzzFeed and Carr, the SCO spokesman.

R269 Not according to the Harvard/Politico study released Jan.3, 2019.
The numbers have dropped considerably from the high point they reached around the time of the midterm elections.
The number is now 38%. The number of Independents has dropped the most dramatically. It isn't happening unless something huge and irrefutable occurs. Something which is discovered by Mueller I mean.

R290- So the basic premise is that Buzzfeed had the right premise but some of the details were wrong? Isn't that what someone predicted - that in the end, we'd find out that Buzzfeed was right?

I don't think this has been posted here yet. Worth a read.

R291, the numbers bounce around a bit, in the upper 30s and low 40s. It rises to over 60% if you put other disciplinary actions on the table, meaning that the majority of Americans would be happy to see Trump punished in some way.
The point remains that at its current percentage it's not enough to go all in on impeachment. Yet. But, to answer R188, it is most definitely not the "extreme" "marginal" lunatic fringe position that he is trying to pretend it is.

Oh, I see. R291 is, in fact R188. I should have known.

The tipping point, as far as I can see, is when it all comes out. When the House votes to impeach him, they will be guided by Mueller's conduct of this mess. The Democrats will be meticulous. Nadler and Schiff will not be fucking around. First we have Mueller's impeccable, detailed indictments and his sentencing documents, then you have the House committees and their witnesses, and the entire world watching. The Media laser focused. Public opinion will finally shift as more people become persuaded that he is in fact a criminal and a traitor, and either the Senate votes to have a trial, or they get run out of office with their asses on fire. Anyone who refuses to take action against Trump in the face of all that will be branded a traitor and a pariah, and will disgrace himself for life.

R277. Can you imagine what trump's grave site will be like? They better bury that fat orange ass on well-hidden private property because it will be drenched with urine and feces in perpetuity. Actually, might be a good idea to bury him in Siberia. An icy, cold grave in the land he loves best.

Senate seats up for election in 2020 are 22 Republican seats to 12 Democratic seats. I would think this means that the incumbent Republicans will be eager to capitulate if public opinion is against the Trump crime family.
Sorry about the McTurtle picture.
