I don’t know what would cause a person to be upset because their hair was touched. I used to have to drive 45 min to a black salon until I learned how to do it out of a box (Soft Sheen Carson, honey) & finally when they came out with Rusk Anti-Curl for white people that was 10x as expensive for the same result (so I went back to the black stuff). I am white, but it's just my dad's hair - maybe he has a secret black ancestor - who knows. In the 90s, long straight floppy hair was in - not puffy 'fros. My hair couldn't even move with the wind. It was like a brick.

My hair thinned / straightened out over the years, though I still relax it in the summer when it is humid & then it is still just so much easier to deal with. And it's shinier and silkier when relaxed. Who would want it natural?
