Why do people insist on doing chem peels. Yeah I know, looks great later, bla, bla, bla. But human skin was not designed for that kind of damage. It always comes back to haunt them when they get older have more damage than someone who spent long summers in the sun.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 16, 2019 7:22 AM |
R13 Umm, no it doesn't I had a full on phenol peel at the age of 32 to remove all of my sun damage. A phenol peel is an inpatient procedure and is about 4 times as strong as a TCA peel. It removes all of your skin down to the raw meat, and you are bandaged for several days.
It has been 33 years and I have the skin of a 33 year old. If that sounds absurd, it's not. I "grew" an entirely new face 33 years ago so that is the real age of my skin. I avoid the sun like the plague. It was probably the smartest thing I have ever done. Not one day goes by that I am not questioned about my wrinkle and spit free face. I look my age, but my skin does not, so I suppose that confuses people enough to just come right out and ask what's the deal?
Docs don't really like to do phenol peels these days, so I feel extra fortunate that I did it when I did.

R17 No. You could not be more wrong. I have had not cosmetic surgery. That is why I was quite honest about looking my age. My kin is nearly perfect. It is not waxen or plastic looking at all. As for the confusing part, other women are by nature pretty nosy. When they see a woman close to their own age without any lines or wrinkles, and she obviously does not use Botox, they want to know the how and the why.
It's really quite simple.

My dermatologist suggested a peel to remove various skin cancers. He suggested two actually - one for my newly balding scalp and another on my face. Told me he cannot do the procedures at the same time and to expect a week downtime while the skin heals. I believe the process is a paste or gel is applied, then 30 minutes of blue light treatment. Has anyone had any experience with this? I'm 60 with some sun spots and scaling. (FYI - I didn't go to him asking for this. He suggested it after my bi-annual skin cancer check up.)

R34 - As someone who gets precancerous spots removed every year, what is the peel treatment called?
I would love to do a peel of it can remove all of the possible precancerous cells - especially if it also helps to make my skin look better (rather than the usual blotches where he froze off the spots.)
Also for others, how much did the peels cost.

R13 People who get chemical peels almost never have more damage than people who spent a lifetime in the sun. I don't know what gave you that idea. I've never had a professional-level peel, but I know that certain acids (AHA) have the ability to promote collagen synthesis. A phenol peel has a horrible recovery, but it can make skin look decades younger. It's the filler and the botox that makes these people look worse, not the peels.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 16, 2019 5:10 PM |
Chemical peels scare me. I've had botox and fillers (mostly pointless, especially given the cost). But peels are like a whole different thing. I am so scared my skin won't regenerate normally. And I have seen some people who have this weird shiny look like they just got burned - for months. It's like a 6 month process to totally heal for some people, especially phenol. Others might be good in 3 weeks, but the whole thing freaks me out. Lasers too.

Not true-collagen is formed when the epidermis is injured. The trick is consistent use of sunscreen after the peel.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 16, 2019 6:22 PM |
You can buy a light peel, and try it out at home. (Light peels will not damage your skin. They will give you a little tingling, burning sensation for a few minutes afterwards.)
I do one at home ($9 per bottle--lasts me a year) every month or two. My skin looks radiant for..a month or two. Then I do it again.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 16, 2019 7:59 PM |
It certainly could be a chemical peel but I suspect it's the result of an ablative laser treatment. I do have one every six months and, yes, it requires me to hibernate for about a week (more to avoid the sun than anything else) but MY GOD the results are phenomenal. Really amazing, especially right afterwards. Your skin looks dewy and hydrated and incredibly youthful.

Phenol peels were banned in NZ because they can cause liver and kidney damage, and a woman died. I have done erbium-yag laser peels. The recovery time is about a week and the results last a couple of years. It's not an easy recovery, you itch insanely. Once you do any kind of peel, you have to be vigilant about sun protection. Right now I use retin-a 10% made at a compounding pharmacy and aha 10% I get at iherb.com. You cannot use them at the same time.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | January 17, 2019 7:57 AM |
R79 Yes, thy are potentially very dangerous. My surgeon did a test run on a small patch on my face in advance, Then he insisted on keeping me in the hospital for two days so he could monitor the kidney and liver function. It is very extreme, but the results are truly amazing. Not only do you get brand new skin, but there is a bit of a face lift effect as a bonus. The new skin is tight and as someone mentioned, the collagen growth is amazing. It cost $2,500. plus hospital and anesthesia fees in 1986 dollars.
It was the best money I ever spent. I had been a sun worshipper all my life and I was starting to see what my future looked like. My only problem since then has been a chronic vitamin D deficiency because I avoid the sun at all costs. That ain't easy in S. Florida.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | January 17, 2019 8:48 AM |
R80, I too depleted vit D after a decision to embrace lifelong sunscreen use. But my vit D levels quickly rose after getting the right supplements, 10,000 iu tablets twice a week, plus a daily multi with 400 iu. Cheap on iherb.

This. I was trying to, and my face because so red with little veins, I had to stop for about 6 months just to let my skin heal.
(I'm the one that gives myself a little home glycolic peel once every two months. Nice refresher. I'm in my late 30s, btw.)
What they recommend that I've read but have yet to try is using retin-a a few nights a week for a few months. Then stop for 6 weeks, and give yourself a home glycolic peel. There's some synergy that happens when you "prep" your skin with relatively weak retin-a for a while before a peel.
[quote] The new skin is tight and as someone mentioned, the collagen growth is amazing. It cost $2,500. plus hospital and anesthesia fees in 1986 dollars.
In 2019, there are better and safer ways to grow collagen. Also, keep in mind that this poster was a young man (early 30s) when he did this, and your ability to heal from wounds declines with age.
Why anyone would risk organ failure for better looking skin, I don't know.

Re the retin-a...I use it every night in the autumn/winter. I don't get any reaction to it. I do not use it in summer because I am in the ocean a lot and can't count on sunscreen, though I do apply it. I use the glycolic acid in the daytime. moisturiser on top of both. (50s)
by Anonymous | reply 90 | January 17, 2019 2:22 PM |
R90, you must have really strong skin! I'm in my late 30s, and using the 0.5% retin every day (before I even threw in a peel) made my skin a red hot mess. I can only use it every other day, tops.

R80, a.k.a. "Miss Wrinkle and Spit Free"'s surgical costs = $2,500 plus hospital and anesthesia fees in 1986 dollars. Let's say the hospital and anesthesia fees brought the total price up to $4000. In 2019 dollars that is approximately $9,014. Yowza.

[quote]People who get chemical peels almost never have more damage than people who spent a lifetime in the sun. I don't know what gave you that idea.
Actually there is a scientific basis for my assertion. Human cells are not able to reproduce forever, in fact they have a sort of life span of how many times they can turn over. This is actually why we age. The bodies cells from skin to other organs reach their end point of regeneration and then begin to break down or fail. When you remove a huge portion of the upper layers of the skin through chem or burns, you may heel and look like new for a number of years, but long term, you will have shortened the lifespan prematurely of the skin and be infinitely more prone to cancers.
