if she is put on the cover of Time. Come out, anyway, Jane! I really would love to see her with a nice woman.
I'm surprised Jane was able to sit under those hot lights for so long without melting. There's more plastic in that face than at a Mattel factory.

She had threesomes with french hookers for Vadim’s benefit but knowing now her track record with men and how easily she moulded herself into whatever her husband at the time wanted her to be.......I wouldn’t be that shocked if she really was a lesbian or at least bisexual. In fact, I think if she ever wants a romance again she’ll have to find a woman because she can’t break the pattern she has with men. Even that last poor old guy shaking in his chair ended up sucking the life force out of her probably through no fault of his own, she just can’t find a way to be herself and be a man’s partner.

I would not be surprised if Fonda declared herself to be a transman.
She's spent her life following fads.

Like I have mentioned on this board before, based on everything I have ever heard her say and write, Jane appears to be a bisexual woman who would have been much better off if she had allowed herself to be in long term relationship/s with a woman/women.

She's *EIGHTY-FUCKING-ONE!!??**
Yes, we all can sense what she's gone through to get to look like that at that age, but still...damn.
Who knows what the areas she covers up with clothes look like, but really, any partner she might have, male, female or otherwise identifying, should be incredibly lucky.

Lily looks great for 80 too. Jane looks like Melanie Griffith especially when she tilts her head back to laugh.
Did everyone know Lily was gay back in the 70s? She laughs here when Ellen asks how people knew she was gay but honestly I wouldn’t know just by looking at her/watching her.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 16, 2019 2:43 AM |
Very obvious from the beginning that Lily was gay. On Laugh-In she was so incredibly creative both as Edith Ann and the operator Ernestine. She physically distorted herself in ways very different than women like Lucy with her facial mannerisms & pratfalls, inother words Lily had a sense of freedom that appeared less scripted. Her stage solo performances were so brilliant, so free wheelingly creative, her attire basic mime - black pants and flats. Total lovely, brilliant dyke.
I agree Jane has a school girl crush on her old pal. Jane has been everywhere - knows everyone, Lily has captured her heart with brilliant wit. It’s love.

It’s funny how even though people/celebrities are totally comfortable “coming out” now, when asked whom their celebrity crushes are, it’s still an “awkward moment.” Look how Lily freezes up there. It’s because even all the put lesbs like Ellen and Rosie O would always go on about their bullshit male crushes (omg that body). You never hear even out gay stars say whom their same sex celebrity crushes are. They either have to pretend to fan girl over a hot guy or be asexual (which basically Lily was here).

by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 16, 2019 9:35 AM |
I noticed that too r22. It was quite awkward and uncomfortable to watch. When the question was asked I was hoping she wouldn’t pick a man or say “ditto” to Jane’s pick.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 16, 2019 10:59 AM |
R22/R25 I have a theory about that that may or may not be valid. I am gay—always have been, and I’ve never been in the closet. I am male. My first celebrity crush from around age five was Olivia Newton-John. I kind of swooned over her, thought she was beautiful, loved her music.
To tell people that is to open a whole can of worms and to incite long conversations that can range from frustrating to annoying to maddening.
Notably, that crush is from when I was a child—not yet a sexually awake being—and although I had a puppy-love crush, there was no sexual attraction, obviously. I had several other female crushes growing up: girls whom I thought were pretty or nice or smart. That is the option we are given (the opposite sex) and that was what it was. Around 11 or 12 I began to “feel things,” and then I started looking at boys differently, and different feelings were stirred, and I never again had a crush on a girl or woman.
So let’s just imagine Lily’s first crush was a male movie star, and she says that after having discussed her 50-year gay relationship and all that that entails. If that were the case, I can imagine that 80-year-old Lily might not want to get into that conversation, having put up with homophobic bullshit all her long life, and instead would choose just not to answer.
For the gay men and women here, were all your first celebrity crushes of the same sex? If not, would you want to complicate discussions of your sexuality by explaining why not, knowing that a lot of black-and-white thinkers are watching?

The problem was not that she was mocking that criminal war she was openly mocking the American soldiers trapped fighting it. Very very stupid for an adult. Even today nobody derides those in the military no matter how horribly wrong our politicians are. It's something she has to perpetually live with and must always keep a dignified silence instead of saying 'Get a life!'

It was hardly clumsy. She's laughing and having a good time. And very much in sympathy with the anti American pro socialist pro communist European sympathies of the period. And yes sitting in a North Vietnamese tank behind a machine gun was out and out anti American soldier.
The Vietnam war was one of America's most despicable mistakes supported by a corrupt vicious right but her being manipulated by her French husband and his hypocritical co-horts no better than American conservatives in their way showed a naivete and gullibility that she proceeded with for the rest of her life.
She apologized and there's nothing more she can do but to lash out at those who still accuse her of treason (which it was) only makes you question how serious her apology was.

She brazenly and traitorously went behind enemy lines and sat atop an anti-American aircraft gun smiling gleefully and clapping widely like a deranged, maybe lesbian, seal in heat all for the enjoyment of Communist paparazzi. M was supposedly really thrown by working with Fonda on Julia. I forget the specifics but of it all but in that recent Streep bio they mention Fonda being really tense or nervous or something and Meryl was shocked that a big star was so insecure.
Anyone remember the details?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 17, 2019 2:36 AM |
From "Vanity Fair":
Julia anecdote from Streep’s speech:
[Streep] recalled a day on set that someone came up to her, saying how she was glad that Jane was feeling better because she has been “crying all night.”
“Why?” Streep asked. She was told,
“Well, they looked at dailies from last week and [Jane] just thinks she looks so old.”
“She was 38 years old and so beautiful,” she continued. “We’re all afflicted with these insecurities, but Jane has a special radar … what she does, she deflects her own anxiety and made me—a day player, a nobody—feel fantastic. After we wrapped that movie, I found out she’d gone back to California and told everyone who would listen about this girl with a weird last name, and opened more doors than I even probably know about today."

I like Jane and she personifies the disappearing "gauche caviar" / limousine liberal, and I have a high tolerance for that set - up to about the 1980's, when the new generation became rancid. Jane's generation of that, was cool. Jane isn't a traitor. Ridiculous. Jane is really a mixed bag, walking talking acting contradictions. That is what makes her interesting in life and on screen, because I don't find her technically a brilliant actress at all, nor have I ever thought she was stunningly beautiful. It makes sense to me she is a latent lesbian, as well.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 17, 2019 7:41 AM |
One time in the 80's I saw Jane at a charity ball with Ted. She's really high wattage and she looked kinda tacky, like old Barbie already, but also gorgeous, and she also drew the gaze more than anyone else in the room. There aren't that many people who do that. It's like a spotlight is on them 24/7. She's an attention seeker but not a black hole, like a Kardashian. When you look at her, your eyes move around a lot, and your synapses fire but not sure to what end.

I was born in 1978, and so obviously I was not here to witness the Vietnam fiasco. I’ve seen a lot of people lose their shit about Fonda supposedly having betrayed the country by undermining US involvement in Vietnam. I find that curious given that, with the benefit of hindsight, the verdict of history seems to be that our involvement was misguided—describing it in the most charitable way possible—and that people who opposed it during the conflict/war now have essentially been redeemed.
My father served in the Vietnam war. He believes the entire war was a mistake and that lives on both sides were destroyed under false pretenses. He also is somewhat traumatized by the experience. We went to San Francisco over the holidays and he panicked one day when he realized he was wearing his Navy hat—because he remembers when San Francisco was aggressively opposed to the war. We assured him that that was 50 years ago (He’s 70.), and that people wouldn’t even think about it now. But he’s scarred forever and has ingrained notions. Nevertheless, he thinks Fonda was an activist whose heart was in the right place and that she was young and naive, trying to do something good according to what she knew at the time, but that she was ignorant of the context of what she was doing and the damage that might come of it. She apologized. If he can forgive her and move the fuck on, acknowledging that people do dumb and ignorant things especially when young and especially when inspired to be activists, then everyone else should be able to accept that, too. Jesus.

Only on DataLounge is a thread about Jane Fonda in 2019 dominated by discussions of her 1960s activism, complete with the beyond-stale reference "Hanoi Jane." I hope it really is just the one poster.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 17, 2019 4:15 PM |
Pretty much is only one or 2 posters - wingnuts. Jan was manipulated by Hayden into doing this, additionally it was her “hosts” that created that not so spontaneous moment - not Jane. Growing up as a kid totally eager to please the cold angry Henry Fonda as her only parent - you bet she has an ingrained need to please.
It was a shitty war and Jane, FTA, Baez - every single Resistor was correct. It was fought for nothing but Boeing, McDonnell Douglas and arms manufacturers - and DESIGNED TO FAIL. Every singl e guy in my HS was deeply relieved that “war” ended shortly after graduation. Jane was correct then - she is VERY correct now - she has seen this rodeo before.
This is exactly the kind of shit, ginned up distracting war Grifter wants too, so every single one of you hating fuckers better hope there are more Fonda’s, Baez’s and Resistors out there. Nowadays you fetishist Hawks - your kids will be patched up to a degree that they will suffer all of their lives. Get your head out of yr Deplorable Asses. Medical Science works magic - but leaves them totally broken inside and out. It is no gift.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 17, 2019 5:27 PM |
Fonda as everyone knows has been manipulated by men her ENTIRE life and following fashionable social and political trends like skirt lengths. This is not a one off. Yes we know the Vietnam war was wrong. Nobody is arguing with that. But can you imagine Judy Garland visiting Nazi Germany during WW ll getting into a German tank and laughingly pretend to shoot it?
She was not a youth. She was in her mid 30s. She wrote: 'The buck stops here. If I was used, I allowed it to happen ... a two-minute lapse of sanity that will haunt me forever ... But the photo exists, delivering its message regardless of what I was doing or feeling. I carry this heavy in my heart. I have apologized numerous times for any pain I may have caused servicemen and their families because of this photograph. It was never my intention to cause harm.'
Fair enough and people need to let it go. But as I said she shouldn't be snapping at people 'Get a Life!' She needs to just suck it up.
What about that do you not understand?

What Jane did is nothing compared to what are miltary did, they are traitors. My dad fought in WWII and was horrified, we had become what we fought in WWII. So fuck off.

And none of you think this might just be an act? We’ve all talked here extensively of how Fonda has had a dozen reincarnations, and she’s nothing if not brilliant at tapping into the current zeitgeist —- which is this case would be two things 1) horny older ladies and 2) sexually fluid women. You don’t think she realizes that hinting at these things on talk shows and beyond helps her stay relevant? Smh
And yes count me as a fan of hers (truly)but let’s get real...this really isn’t very deep.
I also agree she’s gone one or two procedures too far. I was just watching Monster in Law tonight and she looked much better (and incidentally a lot like Elizabeth Montgomery - I imagined she would have aged the way JF would have without the extensive surgery).
Her hair also isn’t in a good place right now but she and another Jane (Pauley) have always had Helmet issues with their hair.
