In my opinion, the Illuminate era was when his music, image, and fanbase were all in perfect sync. To his young female fans, he seemed like a lanky boy next door with a sweet smile and six pack abs who would talk to you about your feelings and not pressure you into sex. The second single, “Lost in Japan,” was an interesting attempt at Justin Timberlake-style R&B. It featured an elaborate music video with a scene by scene recreation of part of Lost in Translation. However, since it was released 5 months after the song came out, it came too late to provide the boost the era needed. God knows he hasn’t had anything like the buzz Ariana Grande had with her “Thank U, Next” song and video for example. It's worth noting that the biggest milestones he achieved this era (performing for the Queen at her birthday concert, appearing on the TIME 100 and the cover of Rolling Stone, and getting nominated for 2 Grammys) came from old institutions which lag behind youth and popular culture.

I’m very interested in seeing how his upcoming tour fares. While it’s only been 2 years since his last tour, his target audience has super fickle attention spans. Also, much higher ticket prices could reduce demand. I’m also very curious about the new music he’s currently recording. Time will tell if he fades away or if he can reinvent himself for a long and successful career ahead.

Money-wise, I wouldn’t worry too much about Shawn. For example, since artists usually take home a third of the gross on a big tour, he probably made about $12.6 million from his Illuminate Tour.
