Rosamund Pike was ROBBED of an Oscar for “Gone Girl”
Such a fucking amazing and scary performance. She was incredible. Amazing Amy must go down as one of the best villains in film history. Rosamund was sensational.
Poor Nick Dunne never knew he was married to batshit crazy. And poor Desi got fucked and slit.
Great movie with great performances! Even that Queen Tyler Perry was great in this.

R4 idk where you’re from but in Brooklyn we have the BAM theater and I watched this movie there (twice) and the second time there was a Frau couple next to me and I knew that cause the female snickered at that line as well as Amy’s comment about boring Midwestern girl or something like that lmao.
I was like you’re clearly a frau from the Midwest. GO BACK.
And there was a group of gay guys behind me that must have only went to get a glimpse of NPH and BA penis cause that’s all they talked about. And I hate when people talk.

Maybe not, OP. Perhaps if Adrian Lyne had directed it but Fincher didn’t know how to construct a “star making” performance for Pike. Worst example: the moment you’ve been waiting for, when you know she’s going to go batshit crazy, Fincher has her bury her face in a pillow. I don’t go to movies to see people but a pillow in front of their face.
Gone Girl left a stank. Couldn’t wait to get out of the cinema.

r10 so true about Adrian Lyne.... there is something so aloof and impersonal about Fincher's films, he's too interested in being cool and slick, wheras Lyne takes you into the intimacy of these twisted relationships.

That's funny R5. I'm from NY too. I happened to catch it on a Monday and there was hardly anyone in the theater (that's how I like to see movies these days since most people talk or text) so I didn't hear any reactions when she said that.

R10 I agree with you about the “movie star” comment. This role could have been a huge movie star making performance but it wasn’t and never felt like it.
After viewing it I was like “wow she was incredible!” But never once thought “wow a star is BORN” while watching it, like say, Rami Malek in “Bohemian Rhapsody”, where after viewing I said “A BIG STAR WAS JUST BORN”. I was apparently correct. He’s everywhere now and one of the most talked about celebs now.

The whole setup for your bitchy cuntery r5 was how you saw that shitty movie at BAM not once but twice no less. You sound like a tired snob. NPH and BA were so miscast in those roles and Rosamuns Pike did nothing to improve on a lackluster script.

It's a corny Lifetime movie. Nobody deserved anything except, maybe, for Carrie Coon who played the sister, the only realistic character.

I know in the scene where she says her infamous “That’s marriage” line he was supposed to choke her out like in the book. In the book he chokes her out and can kill her but then decides against it to not look like a monster who just killed his wife that just returned from being kidnapped and raped etc.
It’s probably better that kept that out of the movie.

Rosamund Pike was 35 and pregnant when Gone Girl came out — I think these factors contributed to the movie not really being a big star making role for her. I think she’s focused on making British movies since then (all of which she’s been very good in), but that limits her exposure.
A Private War is her first performance since GG that’s received any awards attention, but unfortunately it sounds like the movie itself is not as good as her performance. Her Marie Curie film will be her next shot.

I had mixed feelings about the film. It's probably not a film I would watch again. I didn't like the dreary greyish cast to the film that so many movies have now, it makes me feel disconnected from the characters and story. One thing the film captured perfectly though was the way a story like this plays out in the media and how journalists and the public treat the people involved. Another thing that I thought was really canny was how quickly the "white trash " woman and her boyfriend /fuck buddy sniffed Amy out. Amy was very good at fooling naive suburban fraus and the media but not somebody who has led a rougher life. That scene where the woman asks Amy "You've never been hit have you? " was spot on. Ben Affleck was perfectly cast as the type of shifty ,aloof hot white guy who the media and housewives would distrust (but still want to hear more about ) . An actor with a warmer affect might not have worked as well. Pike was very good but I'm a little curious what Witherspoon would have done with the role.

Witherspoon would have been awful. She’s no Amazing Amy.

R39 Pike did a very good job but I'm not so sure Witherspoon would have been awful. I think she would have taken the role in a different direction. While Pike had a upper middle class ,east coast wasp ice queen vibe Witherspoon probably would have been more a perky but passive aggressive southern middle American type. The type who will smile serenely to your face but make a cutting remark once you leave the room. It certainly would have changed the tone of the film.

Also, Rosamund followed this film with A United Kingdom. I was so excited to see it at TIFF and my friend and I thought it was shit. So predictable and disappointing.
The role in GG is somewhat one-note. Like why are we supposed to care so much Amazing Amy and why she's so devious?

The movie was not terrible but all the news stuff was laughable. The stunt Nancy Grace almost made me stop watching but I like Carrie Coon in this. And I thought Roseamund Pike was marvelous in this. She played everything granted in a genre film but she played many notes. Only Miss Barbara Stanwyk has played a superior femme fatale in my eyes. Thoough Pike played more colors Miss Syanwyk was just delicious.

She was not that good. She has resting bitch face and in the scenes before the big reveal she is not at all convincing. Amy is supposed to be ableto fool people and she acts like an ice queen before andafter, as someone said above. In the book you get really surprised at her deviousness, but not in thefilm. Also, Affleck and her never look or sound convincing as a couple (though this maybe not solely her fault).

R59 I did not like the casting. Tyler Perry, Sela Ward, Neil Patrick Harris, Missi Pyle, Kim Dickens, Casey Wilson. Not necessarily bad actors, but they made the film feel a bit low rent — almost as if the casting director thought she was casting a television movie or series.

As somebody already mentioned, Rosamund Pike's ice queen looks and cool, aloof and aggressive vibe scream 'sociopath'. Amy should have been cast with somebody like Amy Adams or Anne Hathaway, somebody absolutely prissy and sweet and agreeable, who doesn't stand out of the crowd, who can easily mask her psychopathic nature.

I believe Reese optioned the book for film and really wanted to play Amy. In the end, I read that both she and Fincher agreed that Pike would have been a better fit for the role. I thought Pike was excellent. She doesn't seem like the type who does a lot of campaigning for Oscars. I thought I read that she and Affleck hated each other and wouldn't do press together towards the end of their tour. He said that personality was very similar to Amy IRL and couldn't stand her.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | January 26, 2019 5:06 PM

Amy was a cold Ice Queen character in the book. That’s why Pike was deemed better. Cause she fit the character. Reese doesn’t.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | January 26, 2019 5:13 PM

No, she wasn't. Amy had legitimate grievances with her parents and husband. And how her dreams and fantasies of adult life didn't meld up with the reality was heartening. So when those elements of her character are proved to be actually the only positive and relatable things about her, it's kind of shock when she is increasingly revealed as a psychopath.
Jennifer Garner would have been good at expressing the self-pity and the Type A obsessiveness.

I really loved this movie and saw it twice in theaters, which I hardly ever do. I thought Pike was good, but people are right when they say she never really had that "this is a STAR performance" moment. She lacks the delicious villainy that someone like, say, young Sharon Stone would have brought to the role. I also thought Fincher's color-drained photography was annoying. I almost wish it had been all bright and perky like an Ikea commercial. It would have a been a little more bizarre and kooky.
Maybe someone like Adrian Lynne or Paul Verhoven could have perked it up a little bit.

The issue is that the source material is frau schlock. Now, someone like Brian de Palma would've been able to turn something like that into dark camp but Fincher doesn't have that sort of sensibility.

R69 so many movies nowadays have that boring, dull, drained of life and color look to it. This greyish cast is depressing and unsightly, frankly I would take even technicolor over this style.

R70 yes I agree with you on the source. When the book and movie came out, Amy became something of a feminist hero on corners of the internet, particularly among pampered but inexplicably aggrieved upper middle class waspy women, who seem to imagine they lead terribly difficult lives.

Now, I can't stop thinking about a De Palma Gone Girl and it's driving me crazy at how brilliant that might have been. He'd have understood how to do it and it would have been a hoot. He probably wouldn't even have to change any of the casting.

HOWEVER BITCHES-

And Amy had so many VALID POINTS/VIEWS, it was sometimes hard to remember- that this bitch is EVIL. But she was NEVER crazy. She KNEW what she felt. She was a sociopath. And so intelligent.
The book!??? A FUCKING PAGE TURNER. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! One of the best books ever.
So, in closing. I am trash. My taste is trash. And I agree with OP!
