I got both because of what Iread about them here. Both very funny and informative

Most biographies with "fabulous gossip" are full of lies.

I enjoyed this well-documented biography of this gay writer and the "amatory gyrations" of his clever group of friends. (it was plundered by an American journalist for his flashy fictional thing called 'The Hours'.

John Richardson's memoir "Sorcerer's Apprentice" recalls his years as Douglas Cooper's boy toy, if you like modern art and profiles of the high life, it includes Picasso and his many women, many other artists and wealthy collectors. Cooper was knifed by rough trade in France and was bleeding on a doorstep when some woman found him and saved his life.

R3: The Willson bio is very coy about details, except to say Willson bedded some of his straight guys and that some gay ones managed to avoid fucking him.

The William Haines bio mentioned by the OP is "Wisecracker: The Life and Times of William Haines, Holllywood's First Openly Gay Star," also by William J. Mann.

Mann has also written a bio of John Schlesinger, the gay director, "Edge of Midnight: The Life of John Schlesinger," and the very controversial "Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn," in which he writes that Hepburn and Spencer Tracy were both gay. In addition, there is one about a gay icon--"Hello, Gorgeous: Becoming Barbra Steisand."

Mann is currently writing a bio of Marlon Brando. Yikes!

Maria Riva's biography of her mother Marlene Dietrich is the best of the best in star bios.

She had quite the love-hate relationship with her mutter and doesn't hold back.
