Nostalgia: The Series. I watched Season 1 and it was...fine. I don't get why everyone creams their panties over it

Has MBB gone full Lohan yet?

by Anonymousreply 1January 7, 2019 7:41 AM

I cream my panties over Billy.

In 1985 I was 7 years old. Happy carefree days. Watching He-man and Dungeons and Dragons on TV. Playing on bikes in Holidays and visiting my grandma with my mum and brother for days out.

by Anonymousreply 3January 7, 2019 7:46 AM

Millie Bobby Brown has worn out her welcome, I hope they show less of Eleven

by Anonymousreply 4January 7, 2019 7:53 AM

Will Billy die in season 3?
In 1985 I was 7 years old.

I was sixteen, sort of in-between the ages of all the young characters depicted.

by Anonymousreply 6January 8, 2019 5:22 PM

Jake Busey is a creepy looking guy. He was the nutjob in that awful Jodie Foster movie Contact.

by Anonymousreply 7January 8, 2019 5:24 PM

The only person who I wouldn’t mind dying is Jonathan. I hope it’s not Steve, but he had such a great season last season that it would be a big emotional punch.

I’m surprised they tout MBB for major awards and not the kid who plays Will. He’s excellent.

It hurts to watch the actress who plays Nancy.

by Anonymousreply 8January 8, 2019 5:30 PM

Nancy can go to, IMO. I love Steve after last season. Jonathan can def go. COmpletely agree with R8 that Will is better than 11. In season 1, I thought Mike was better too.

by Anonymousreply 9January 8, 2019 5:45 PM

Please don't kill off beefy assed Sheriff Hopper!

by Anonymousreply 10January 8, 2019 5:47 PM

A big problem they had last season is they kept Eleven away from the main kids. I believe they said she’s friends with Max this season. I felt really bad for Max last season and I’m glad she’ll be considered part of the group. Lucas’ sister is supposed to play a main part in Season 3 as well.

by Anonymousreply 11January 8, 2019 5:49 PM

I think it's going to be very hard to keep this anywhere near as good as it was in Season 1 because I agree with R11 that the show was best when Eleven was with the boys and I think it's just hard for them to logistically get all these kids together at the same time, particularly Eleven and Mike who are filming other movies.

by Anonymousreply 12January 8, 2019 6:03 PM

I will not be watching, those fucking kids have been shoved down everyone's throat.

by Anonymousreply 13January 8, 2019 7:45 PM

MBB is showing clear signs of ending up a showbiz child star casualty. I boycott any show where I think that’s the case with any young actor in it.

by Anonymousreply 14January 8, 2019 7:51 PM

True R13 I got very tired of seeing them EVERY-FUCKING-WHERE

by Anonymousreply 15January 8, 2019 8:05 PM

Other than Finn and MBB, I don’t really see the others around. I don’t know much about MBB other than that whole Drake texting thing

by Anonymousreply 16January 8, 2019 8:11 PM

S3 preview clip. Love that they are using a mall as a storyline. I was born in the 90’s and missed out on the 80’s mall hype, they looked so much fun back then

by Anonymousreply 18January 9, 2019 3:29 AM

Will this show finally get a gay storyline?

by Anonymousreply 19January 9, 2019 3:30 AM

R19 Will is canonically gay (it’s mentioned in the first script and Joyce alludes to it in the first episode and the last script alludes to it as well) but I doubt we’ll see one this season

Some here and elsewhere thought Billy was gay coded but I’m not sure

by Anonymousreply 20January 9, 2019 3:33 AM
In 1985 I was 7 years old.

Hah I was 21 and had just graduated from college. I hated the world I lived in, which had just re-elected Reagan and had yuppies crawling all over it. I read the Nation so I was mad about everything, but Spy Magazine hadn’t started up yet so I couldn’t laugh at it all yet!

Music CDs were a big new thing — it’s so weird to be that that miraculous new technology that excited everyone so much is fast becoming a thing of the past. That’s been the case with many technologies I’ve seen be born, live and die, all in my early adult or adult years. Betamax (!!!), VHS, laserdiscs, CDs, desktop computers (yes I know many people still have them at work), flip phones, blackberries, iPods. Probably more.

by Anonymousreply 21January 9, 2019 3:40 AM

So weird to me ^^^

by Anonymousreply 23January 9, 2019 3:44 AM

They shot their wad with a good First season. That’s all they had.

It really shit the bed in the second season.

The It movie sucked so hard too. I don’t see why people think that weird-looking kid is the next big thing. He’ll, Elijah Wood was cuter and he’s no looker.

by Anonymousreply 24January 9, 2019 3:48 AM

So 2016

by Anonymousreply 25January 9, 2019 3:49 AM

Sooooo much time has passed. People have moved on to other things.

by Anonymousreply 26January 9, 2019 3:50 AM

I actually loved IT. But if I were a horror fan, I’d probably have hated it. I don’t like scary things but watched IT because I like Stephen King’s other works, and I loved the coming of age storyline with all of the characters. That said, Pennywise wasn’t exactly scary because he could have easily killed the characters in so many situations but didn’t.

by Anonymousreply 27January 9, 2019 3:52 AM

Man, the production looks so much bigger and higher budget r30. Funny to think how small scale a show this used to be.

I see they are going to have Dacre as a lifeguard so he can be gratuitously naked. Nice.

by Anonymousreply 31March 20, 2019 2:54 PM

I’m excited! I love that Max and Eleven are going to be friends this season and I love the wardrobe choices

by Anonymousreply 32March 20, 2019 4:26 PM

July 4th though, it's still pretty far away.

by Anonymousreply 33March 20, 2019 4:55 PM

Season one was a surprise hit. The second season came with expectations. I don't know what season three comes with.

by Anonymousreply 34March 21, 2019 1:55 AM

They shouldn't have waited so long in between seasons. Over a year and a half? People have the attention of a 2 year old and have moved on to other things.

by Anonymousreply 35March 21, 2019 1:56 AM

r35 I'd agree with that in principle, but this show is a juggernaut, so it can afford the delay.

by Anonymousreply 36March 21, 2019 1:59 AM

It seems the show relies on specific dates they use in their shows. Last season was released around Halloween, because one episode took place during Halloween.

by Anonymousreply 37March 21, 2019 2:00 AM

r35 If it was normal television I'd agree. But I don't think viewers attention span really matters when it comes to heavily advertised shows on streaming sites.

by Anonymousreply 38March 21, 2019 2:04 AM

Stranger Things is an event. It comes with social media memes and all. You can't escape it when it's being released, because people will have their inside jokes and you will feel left out if you don't watch it as soon it's released.

by Anonymousreply 39March 21, 2019 2:07 AM

Do you think the scene where Will is crying over old photographs is about the unrequited crush on Mike that was hinted at in the S2 finale screenplay? They show it right after Mike says to someone (Will?) that they're no longer kids and can't be hanging out in his basement forever (in other words, he now prefers spending time with his gf).

by Anonymousreply 40March 21, 2019 2:45 AM

Will can have his straight friend crush shattered this season, I'm okay with that.

If Season 4 brings on his High School Boyfriend.

by Anonymousreply 41March 21, 2019 2:58 AM

A kid in smalltown Indiana in the 1980s having a boyfriend?

by Anonymousreply 42March 21, 2019 2:59 AM

Is anyone else uncomfortable about how sexualized the kids in this show are? It was okay until they gave love interests to the kids, ugh.

by Anonymousreply 43March 21, 2019 3:01 AM

r42 It's a fantastical reimagining of the '80s Indiana, though.

r43 Very much so, yes.

by Anonymousreply 44March 21, 2019 3:02 AM

r34 I've read they're doing a crossover with 13 reasons why, a bizarre decision

by Anonymousreply 45March 21, 2019 3:02 AM

Mike was so adorable in season 1 but he looks like a different person now. All the other kids look about the same.

I’m optimistic about this season. Season 2 was a mess.

Steve and Dustin are great together.

I actually assume Will is gay. Joyce clearly thought so in Season 1 and a mother often knows.

by Anonymousreply 46March 21, 2019 3:03 AM

I'm not aiming that high re. Will, no need for boyfriends and it wouldn't be particularly relatable for those of us who were children in the 80s, but can they at least take it further? Minor and easily forgettable hints about a character's possible sexuality mean next to nothing.

by Anonymousreply 47March 21, 2019 3:03 AM

r45 Whut? Why would they hitch their tow to that sinking ship?!

by Anonymousreply 48March 21, 2019 3:04 AM

They were supposed to be 13 in Season 2, it is realistic for them to start having interest in the opposite sex (or same sex for Will). It would be unrealistic to write these burgeoning teenagers like they are 6. The show has to grow up with the characters.

by Anonymousreply 49March 21, 2019 3:06 AM

I find this show overrated but I watch it. I had a Mary moment of getting choked up,with nostalgia while watching the preview. Why do I feel so sad?

by Anonymousreply 50March 21, 2019 3:06 AM

They are like 15 now. I had little middle school boyfriends at 12.

by Anonymousreply 51March 21, 2019 3:07 AM

The kids aging makes me a bit sad. And I suspect nothing will be as glorious as Season 1.

by Anonymousreply 52March 21, 2019 3:08 AM

Well, as a gay kid in the 80s and even 90s, I can't say I relate R51 . Middle school crushes? Sure enough. Boyfriends? I wasn't even out, nor was any boy I knew.

by Anonymousreply 53March 21, 2019 3:10 AM

r51 You oversexed beast!

by Anonymousreply 54March 21, 2019 3:14 AM

R53 - Eleven and Mike and Max and Lucas are straight. They look like most straight kid middle school “couples” in the 80s. I have no expectation that Will would have a boyfriend anytime soon, if he’s gay as often speculated. Agreed it just wasn’t an 80s thing, unfortunately.

by Anonymousreply 55March 21, 2019 3:14 AM

R24 took the words right outta my mouth. This show should have ended after the first season.

by Anonymousreply 56March 21, 2019 3:15 AM

Its not really speculation, as mentioned earlier if you look at the scripts that come out it is clear the writers view Will as a babygay.

by Anonymousreply 57March 21, 2019 3:22 AM

Think I may have posted this in an earlier thread, but I'd really like to see a big melodramatic storyline with Will becoming jealous over Mike's relationship with Eleven, confessing his crush to him (maybe even impulsively kissing him on the cheek), Mike freaking out, Will thinking he's ruined their friendship, and finally Mike comforting him and encouraging him to come out to the rest of the gang and his family.

by Anonymousreply 58March 21, 2019 3:32 AM

I expect Wills sexuality will be as it has been. Subtle references that the audience can pick up on but his friends will remain oblivious.

I wouldn't expect more than a scene of him like staring at Dacre too long or something.

by Anonymousreply 59March 21, 2019 3:39 AM

The opus post made me sick.

by Anonymousreply 60March 21, 2019 3:39 AM

Are they going to bring back the great, big, chubby, redheaded girl? Babs? I liked her.

by Anonymousreply 64March 21, 2019 4:59 AM

A bit too late for that R61.

by Anonymousreply 65March 21, 2019 6:57 AM

I was 16 in 1985 and watching the trailer for this took me right back to that time.

I really love the attention to detail in this series. And I love all the kids.

by Anonymousreply 66March 21, 2019 7:07 AM

So long as the red power ranger is shirtless or nude in every episode, I'm in!

by Anonymousreply 67March 21, 2019 7:15 AM

I think at the end of the series Will will turn bad. Not just because he's gay (and back in the 80s it was still ok to be homophobic) and the rest of the group shifted apart (or from his point of view distanced themselves from him), but because of the traumatic experience from season one in the upside down world.

by Anonymousreply 68March 21, 2019 8:20 AM

My worry is is that they seem to step back from the showing bigger suggestions that he's gay, to just subtle hints. This is the original script for the dance scene last series they changed a scene clearly showing he's gay and likes Mike. To just making it him looking really uncomfortable dancing with a girl. I'm fine with them not giving him a boyfriend given the context But now that the actors older I really hope they're more obvious with the whole not straight thing.

In Season 1 Will’s mother says that he is “different” than other kids and his father would call him gay slurs. Then they had the story of him drawing a rainbow spaceship. The hints have always been there but in Season 2 it was confirmed

by Anonymousreply 73March 21, 2019 3:33 PM

When will they be finished with this boring shit of a tv show?

by Anonymousreply 74March 21, 2019 3:35 PM

r74

"Grey's Anatomy" is on its 15th season and >300 episodes, and you're annoyed that Netflix's flagship show is still going after two 8-episode seasons?

by Anonymousreply 75March 21, 2019 5:05 PM

If you don't like a show...don't watch it. There are many popular shows I have no interest in and don't watch.

I'll never watch "This Is Us", but why would I hope that it ends. It doesnt affect me at all.

by Anonymousreply 76March 21, 2019 5:10 PM

r73 They haven't confirmed anything yet. His mom saying he's different as proof she suspects he's gay, so's Jonathan telling him it's OK not to be normal. But his dad and school bullies calling him a f*g isn't proof of anything as they don't know him. And I doubt a kid in rural 1984 Indiana is even aware of the Rainbow flag. Meanwhile they've also shown him getting the most attention from girls in the gang so it's still perfectly possible for the Duffers to just go "No he's always been straight. He's just an awkward nerdy kid".

by Anonymousreply 77March 21, 2019 7:07 PM

See post r77, r69.

The writers see Will as gay character, that's obviously what their plan is. Will has been planned to be gay since day 1, the original character breakdown referred to it.

by Anonymousreply 78March 21, 2019 7:11 PM

Are either of the Duffer brothers gay?

by Anonymousreply 79March 21, 2019 7:19 PM

Will's face looks like mine back then, and his dancing scene was basically my awkward 'does this have to be a girl? but I guess I like the attention' all over again.

Will season 8 see Will heading to the gay cruising spots? I hope monsters don’t attack him again, lest they become another tired metaphor for HIV/AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 90June 21, 2019 11:17 AM

R89 Seems like it. The new trailer also made it seem like Billy will become the new monster.

by Anonymousreply 91June 21, 2019 11:18 AM

I don't know if they'll kill off a fan favorite like Steve but maybe they will. I suspect instead he'll be saved at the last minute. Billy turning from a regular asshole jock to a literal monster might be a fun twist, though. I actually really like those throwback hand-painted 80's style posters they do for each season.

by Anonymousreply 92June 21, 2019 2:36 PM

Well, I just watched the trailer, & it looks like it has jumped the shark.

What else can they do? They hang out with a kid who has ESP, telekinesis, remote viewing abilities. They kept her out of the lab, & destroyed the lab, simultaneously freeing Will of his metaphysical immersion into the Upside Down.

Season 2 wrapped everything up quite nicely. I don’t see how they can make it better, or have a better adventure for teens to go on.

This show worked really well because they were all kids, minus of few teens. It gave the show that Spielbergesque quality so many have attempted to recreate, yet failed.

Bummer.

by Anonymousreply 93June 26, 2019 10:36 PM

r93 Yeah, I also feel like the story is getting overly convoluted at this point.

by Anonymousreply 94June 26, 2019 10:49 PM

I've said from the beginning, they need to be done with Hawkins after this season. Find another story with new characters in the same world.

by Anonymousreply 95June 26, 2019 10:51 PM

r96 Didn't they kinda try exactly that last season with Eleven's detour in Chicago? And that didn't go over well with either the critics or the audiences.

by Anonymousreply 96June 26, 2019 11:02 PM

*Sorry, I meant to reply to r95.

by Anonymousreply 97June 26, 2019 11:03 PM
[R96] Didn't they kinda try exactly that last season with Eleven's detour in Chicago? And that didn't go over well with either the critics or the audiences.

Because it broke the arc of the season. The episode prior had the most exciting cliffhanger, and then they put it on the shelf for a bunch of annoying side characters.

I'm not saying to connect it directly to what's come before. Just a fresh start with interesting characters.

by Anonymousreply 98June 26, 2019 11:23 PM

Reviews are coming out and they are mostly excellent.

by Anonymousreply 99June 30, 2019 10:48 AM

I'm not surprised. There was something about the set-up that I found really appealing. I mean, at least we appear to have moved on from a shadowy government being the enemy to capitalism.

'Course, I'm a weirdo who actually preferred S2, so what do I know.

by Anonymousreply 100June 30, 2019 11:01 AM

Funny how Dacre /Billy didn't get much film work after the long break. If I was a Hollywood producer I would have given him a big part. I wonder if he has been locked up in the Duffer basement.

R100 I also preferred S2. Thought I was the only one.

by Anonymousreply 109July 1, 2019 7:28 AM

I think a lot of the reason I preferred S2 was due to the adults. Winona seemed a lot calmer in her performance and Sean Astin and Paul Reiser were great additions.

And seriously, "The Spy," the episode that ended with everyone realizing Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer, was the best individual episodes of either season.

by Anonymousreply 110July 1, 2019 3:22 PM

I loved the scene where Steve shared his secret why his hair looks so good. Like previous posters I thought the separation of Eleven from the other guys went on for far too long. I liked the parts of the conspiracy theorist who pointed out that it takes some skill to ease the public into facing and accepting the crazy truth by coming up with over the top crazy shit.

R116 it was very dull, I thought this season was supposed to be an improvement from season 2.

by Anonymousreply 118July 4, 2019 1:30 PM

It was set in 1984 one of the greatest years in music and all the songs they picked in the first episode were shit.

by Anonymousreply 119July 4, 2019 1:36 PM

Season 3 is set in 1985.

by Anonymousreply 120July 4, 2019 2:43 PM

I love the music they're using this season.

by Anonymousreply 121July 4, 2019 2:49 PM

REO Speedwagon?

Episode one was awful. Trite, cliched, completely unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 122July 4, 2019 3:29 PM

About halfway thru. This shit better pick up speed.

by Anonymousreply 123July 4, 2019 4:01 PM

Anyone else finished it yet? I'm not sure how I feel about it, and they definitely screwed over Will's story.

by Anonymousreply 124July 4, 2019 6:55 PM

I find the third season highly entertaining. They way the gang was divided and following their own path of the mystery was way better handled this season than in the second imho.

I liked the new additions like Erica, the sassy little sister of Lucas (child endangerment!), Robin the clever Russian code breaker, and the cute Dr. Alexei (Alex Utgoff).

Loved how Steven talked smack about Robin's crush and the epic battle being interrupted by a music number!

by Anonymousreply 125July 4, 2019 7:44 PM

I'm only on episode 3 but so far it's really good.

by Anonymousreply 126July 4, 2019 7:50 PM

They already fucked up the music in episode one. I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight came out in 87. Season 3 takes place in late summer 1985. It's really not that hard, music supervisors.

by Anonymousreply 127July 4, 2019 8:45 PM

I had no idea Joe Keery was such a furry little thing.

by Anonymousreply 128July 4, 2019 9:07 PM

Big improvement from the second season

People on Reddit are ejaculating all over each other but I don't quite get the love for season 3. It wasn't horrible but it certainly wasn't spectacular. Bad music choices, Dacre's nipples were only exposed for a short period of time, that vaginal opening in the wall. I feel like I need an upper.

by Anonymousreply 130July 4, 2019 9:19 PM

YOU finished season 3 ALREADY!?

by Anonymousreply 131July 4, 2019 9:26 PM

Yeah, I started at 8 this morning.

by Anonymousreply 132July 4, 2019 9:36 PM

r130 I think I'd rank it it above 2. But on actual character relationships and interaction it's the worst they've yet done. Will's reduced to Spidey sense, Lucas may as well not have been there, Max spends half the show acting as a pointless roadblock towards Mileven, Mike wangsts and also doesn't really do anything. Dustin I'm not even that sure counts as their friend anymore for how much they noticed he was gone. The entire newspaper arc is unnecessary. Billy's redemption honestly springs from nowhere and is based on 2 minutes of flashbacks (they should have had Max doing this rather than riding Mikes back). Of the 3 side characters they spent time on mayor and old lady weren't needed.

by Anonymousreply 133July 4, 2019 9:54 PM

I liked the nod to Halloween II in the hospital scenes.

by Anonymousreply 134July 4, 2019 9:58 PM

So it's Invasion of the Body Snatchers this season? How original.

by Anonymousreply 135July 4, 2019 10:12 PM

SPOILERS:

I really liked the Russian spy plot. I thought Maya Hawke was wonderful as Robin. I loved her dynamic with Steve and the scene where she comes out to him and then the subsequent relief she feels when he doesn’t judge her for it was very well done.

Felt so heartbroken for Will, especially when Mike yells “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls!”. The elephant in the room no one talks about

Loved the buddy cop dynamic between Hopper and Joyce, you can tell the actors were having fun

I much prefer watching Max and Eleven’s friendship then watching Mike whine about Eleven. Love the scene with Max introducing El to Wonder Woman comics

And yeah, the Coke product placement scene was a bit much. I feel like Eleven’s annoyed “GUYS!” was the audience

by Anonymousreply 136July 4, 2019 11:00 PM

Is there a subplot that features Joyce going back to court for some halfway decent child support? That retail job can't pay more than $4 per hour and that green Pinto she tools around in from crisis to crisis is a deathtrap. That family has been through so much - like having creepy monsters come out of the walls -to have them all burned to a crisp in a mild rear end collision.

by Anonymousreply 137July 4, 2019 11:28 PM

r137 I never got why Hopper didn't demand a substantial cash settlement for the Byers. The government admitted some form of culpability to the town by saying it was all a chemical accident they covered up. The Byers should not be poor post season 2.

by Anonymousreply 138July 4, 2019 11:33 PM

I don’t get why the Byers are moving from Hawkins. I mean, I know bad memories and stuff but after the loss they just suffered, is it fair to rip the kids from the only people who can understand what they sufffered through?

The last few minutes brought tears to my eyes... I know, Mary!

by Anonymousreply 139July 5, 2019 12:06 AM

I see where she's coming from tbh.

Jonathan's nearly an adult and off to college maybe moving to New York or somewhere will save him dorm fees,

Will would probably benefit from being exposed to new social groups, escaping being Zombie boy, and having to make new friends. If this season showed one thing it's that he doesn't lack confidence.

Eleven I'll agree on. She's a pretty unsocialised and unschooled also she just lost her main means of defence, her dad, and now her boyfriend and only friends.

by Anonymousreply 140July 5, 2019 12:34 AM

How did production get the mall to look so authentic?

by Anonymousreply 141July 5, 2019 12:47 AM

Watched it all today...too fucking hot to go out. I really enjoyed it and thought it was an improvement over S2.

Will we have to wait another year and a half for S4?

by Anonymousreply 142July 5, 2019 2:39 AM

And oh yeah...I love Steve.

by Anonymousreply 143July 5, 2019 2:40 AM

I've only watched one episode so far but I see this show is still as aggressively heterosexual as ever.

by Anonymousreply 144July 5, 2019 2:58 AM

r144 They have a lesbian now. No doubt awards are incoming.

by Anonymousreply 145July 5, 2019 3:20 AM

I'm just glad it wasn't a whole season of Winona shaking Will and screaming at him to wake up. She was actually pretty funny this time around.

by Anonymousreply 146July 5, 2019 3:22 AM

I think Robin will help Will come out officially next season. She cane out to Steve and saw he didn’t judge her which will help Will (even though I think they all know)

I also think next season will be set during Christmas like the first season was

by Anonymousreply 147July 5, 2019 3:23 AM

It looked like David and Winona were having fun this season, there were several scenes where you could see them almost break

by Anonymousreply 148July 5, 2019 3:24 AM

It was...ok. It's basically the same plot sequence as they have had for the past two seasons. How many times is this thing going to materialize into a Demigorgon and terrorize the town, with a side plot of intrigue? After a while, it gets boring and predictable.

SPOILERS SPOILERS

1- Billy's death meant nothing considering he was pretty much dead the minute his body was taken over (and I'm not really sure that particular plot point made sense. The "ooze" seemed to be able to live and grow on its own and never needed hosts before). We knew his arc was over this season after Episode 2.

2- I rewound it and watched it twice and I still don't understand Hopper's death, how it happened and why it happened. I guess it doesn't really matter, but I did spend the next few minutes scratching my head in confusion instead of being moved by his sacrifice. Incredibly sloppy.

SPOILER OVER

Lastly, why do they make Finn Wolfhard and Noah Schnapp wear those horrible wigs? I grew up in the 80s. I didn't know one kid that age who had a hairstyle like that. I watched an interview with Schnapp, Brown and Wolfhard online and was struck by how handsome Schnapp actually is. You'd never know it on that show.

by Anonymousreply 149July 5, 2019 3:30 AM

I don’t think Finn was wearing a wig, I think they just straightened his hair.

I loved every outfit Lucas wore. A lot of the clothes he wore would be cool today. I was born in 96 and malls are considered pretty lame now, but just curious for those of you who were teens in the 80’s, did your parents really let you bike/walk/take the bus without them? I thought that’s when kidnapping paranoia set in

by Anonymousreply 150July 5, 2019 3:33 AM

I was raised in South Florida and was just a couple years older than Adam Walsh. My mother used to leave me in the toy department of that same Sears where Adam disappeared from all the time while she shopped in the store. When I got bored, I would go looking for her. I would say I was probably seven or eight when she first started doing that. And my mom was not neglectful. This was just what parents did back then.

Starting at age 12, we got dropped off at the mall by ourselves all the time. We'd go with a friend or two and sometimes we'd walk across the street to go to the movies. Yet I still had a babysitter that year. I think the year after was when I started being able to stay home by myself. By 13 I was going to the movies all alone all the time.

by Anonymousreply 151July 5, 2019 3:39 AM

Spoiler:

I am gay as fuck, but dear God! The Duffer Brothers better give Steve a girlfriend next season or I will push them in the Upside Down World myself! Steve is probably THE best friend ever on a TV show. I had to LOL at Robin's "How many kids are you friends with?" comment.

I don't think the Sherriff is dead. There was no icky mess left behind and the end credit scene hinted that the Russians have an American prisoner. I think he took his chances and jumped into the closing portal to the Upside Down World.

Felt sorry for Dr. Alexei. Loved that they got the conspiracy guy get more involved this season.

The product placement stuff was what annoyed me most. That Cola scene was so cringe.

The show really made the different teams and their quests work. Then you get a quick reunion and then the go off in separate teams again to fight the final battle.

Sorry, but did not care about Billy this season at all. Not even his quick redemption scene at the end changed that. The character alway came off so sleazy and we already knew about his tense relationship with his dad.

by Anonymousreply 152July 5, 2019 3:39 AM

Steve was so great as comic relief thinking it's his Ahoj hat that prevents him from getting dates.

by Anonymousreply 153July 5, 2019 3:43 AM

I wonder the same thing, r141. They really knocked it out of the park with that mall. I was a kid in the 80s and it reminded me quite a bit of the various malls I went to with my family or friends. The movie theater scenes as well really took me back to going to the movies in the 80s. It was very well done in all matters of set design and costuming. I agree though that music choices were a little questionable at times.

All in all, I enjoyed this season even though it got a bit convoluted (as it has during the previous seasons). I honestly don't think they need a Stranger Things 4, but they left the door open a crack with that last scene that was cut into the credits.

by Anonymousreply 154July 5, 2019 3:44 AM

I don't think Hopper is dead but I think the American is Brenner in the prison.

I was hoping for more mall scenes before the final confrontation - maybe in Sam Goody or Waldenbooks. Show the millennial you actually had to go out and buy shit you wanted.

by Anonymousreply 155July 5, 2019 3:46 AM

No, keep Steve single! He’s like Uncle Jesse if Uncle Jesse didn’t meet Aunt Becky. He’s the cool brother/father figure, they don’t need to bog him down with a relationship. I think the Steve/Robin dynamic is great, and I miss more platonic relationships on television. There are already so many couples on this show. I think Steve/Robin will serve as the fun mentors

by Anonymousreply 156July 5, 2019 3:47 AM

I fear the Duffer Brothers make Steve the next nerd teacher for the next generation of strange nerd kids. Had to LOL at the guy getting such a big entrance for some stupid scene about magnets. Though Joyce was right, as always.

by Anonymousreply 157July 5, 2019 3:54 AM

The Neverending Story song was such a WTF? moment. LOL.

by Anonymousreply 158July 5, 2019 3:56 AM

OMG they're playing Weird Al Yankovic's "My Bologna" right now!!!

This show is really of/for/by the nerds from the '80s. YASSS, KWEEN!

But do the children even know "My Sharona?"

by Anonymousreply 159July 5, 2019 3:58 AM

The Robin character was an excellent addition to this crew. It was needing a slightly older female character who wasn't Nancy so that Steve has a contemporary to play off of. The actor who plays Jonathan literally drains the energy out of every scene and the relationship between he and Nancy is probably the weakest link storyline wise. Who in their right mind would pick Jonathan over Steve, but then again, Nancy is a charisma-less void. I enjoyed her the most in season 1, but they haven't known what to do with her since then and the actress who plays her doesn't really bring a lot to the table. If they return, they should write both Jonathan and Nancy out.

by Anonymousreply 160July 5, 2019 4:03 AM

Yes, I hate when shows stick with the one female per friend group. I was so glad they added Max last season as well.

by Anonymousreply 161July 5, 2019 4:08 AM

Cary Elwes is great in the movie Ghost Light as a buffon lead of a Macbeth play.

I honestly have no clue why you were confused. They made it abundantly clear that anyone in the room when it blew up would be atomized, and they showed the other characters disintegrating into nothing. And he couldn't make it back into the control room because of the electric bolts blocking his path, which would have killed him if he tried to cross them.

Seriously, what part were you still not getting after two viewings??

by Anonymousreply 163July 5, 2019 4:44 AM

I have to say that episode one was pretty terrible, but it just kept getting better and better. By the end, I think I liked it better than season 2.

But nothing can ever match season 1.

And it's pretty wrapped up now. I wouldn't be shocked if they didn't do a season 4. And if they do, they'll be able to make it significantly different rather than just the fourth version of basically the same story.

by Anonymousreply 164July 5, 2019 4:46 AM

I saw the other people get vaporized, which is why I assumed the same thing happened to Hopper, but I missed the electric bolts blocking his path. I guess I didn't rewind it far enough. I saw him shove the Russian into the machine, I saw him yell at Joyce to turn the keys on her own, I saw her make that decision and I saw the result. I did NOT see why he couldn't get out of there.

I suppose I should say thanks, but since you were such a cunt about it, go fuck yourself.

by Anonymousreply 165July 5, 2019 5:45 AM

Um, is it just me?

Or is Guy Pearce teaching a Jazzercize class?

by Anonymousreply 166July 5, 2019 6:01 AM

They've lost the charm of the original which was a loving homage to those cheesy Steven King/Spielberg 80s movies with kids but also a SLIGHT send up of them as well.

Now, it's all so obvious...they're taking the sledgehammer approach to it. And, do we really need the NON stop fucking TERRIBLE juke box hits of the 80s constantly popping up?

Other observations:

1) Winona Ryder was overplaying in Season one and now she's just great; playing it just right. Meanwhile, David Harbour is EATING the damn scenery.

2) Jonathan needs to go...such a terrible actor. Yet, he got caught cast in a new BBC mini series as the Elephant Man. Go figure.

3) Finn Wolfhard is not gonna be a cute adult.

4) Noah Schnapp is an excellent actor. And, yeah, Will is totally gay.

5) That mall was ridiculous. I'm from a small Midwestern town and Hawkins would need to be MUCH larger to have that huge of a mall, even with secret Russian military funding behind it. National retail outlets aren't spending the money to open stores in a town that MIGHT have 10k people in it...maybe.

6) The newspaper stuff was stupid. And, a small town newspaper wouldn't have a staff that big, all sitting around doing nothing. Also: where the fuck was the newspaper when all the crazy shit was happening in season 1 and 2?

by Anonymousreply 167July 5, 2019 7:16 AM

R141 They took over part of an abandoned mall and redesigned it to look 80s. Apparently it's still up and people can visit.

by Anonymousreply 168July 5, 2019 4:09 PM

I don’t know which mall, but they film in Atlanta.

by Anonymousreply 169July 5, 2019 4:16 PM

They took over half an abandoned mall in Atlanta and remade it. If you’d move the camera about 100ft to the left it would have been a mall from today.

by Anonymousreply 170July 5, 2019 4:16 PM

R168 got there before me.

by Anonymousreply 171July 5, 2019 4:17 PM
Finn Wolfhard is not gonna be a cute adult.

Finn Wolfhard has never been a cute anything.

by Anonymousreply 172July 5, 2019 5:12 PM

Finn has an interesting face, I think. He's got charisma and talent so he might be okay.
Noah Schnapp is an excellent actor. And, yeah, Will is totally gay.

Season 3 in a nutshell.

by Anonymousreply 173July 5, 2019 5:40 PM

It was filmed at Gwinnett Place Mall. It's about 90% abandoned. The area they used for filming is still blocked off and heavily guarded which makes me wonder if they will start filming again soon.

by Anonymousreply 174July 5, 2019 6:01 PM

Malls in the 80s really were that over the top though. There was such a glut of them even in small towns. There was at one point something like 30 times more malls per capita in the US than in any other developed country.

by Anonymousreply 175July 5, 2019 6:05 PM

I imagine a lot of the abandoned mall got wrecked filming those battle scenes. I can't imagine it's very safe for those who want to get a pic for their instagram account.

by Anonymousreply 176July 5, 2019 6:10 PM

LOL at Eleven having her Big Little Lies beach moment.

by Anonymousreply 177July 5, 2019 6:10 PM

I'm not sure they're going to go down the "Will is gay" road, especially now that they have a lesbian character. Of course there's no "limit" but since "queer" (I hate that word) isn't their agenda, I think they've covered that part of diversity and are ready to move on.

I think Will isn't interested in girls because he's in many ways not yet grown up. He's seen how bad adulthood can be, so he's in no rush to get there.

by Anonymousreply 178July 5, 2019 6:59 PM

Will is canonically Gay. It’s in the character description in the Pilot, and there is even a point in the first season where Joyce says Will’s dad used to call him a “f*g” and that he has always been different from other kids. The reason Mike’s “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls!” was such an awkward moment between Mike and Will is because Mike addressed the elephant in the room everyone knew but nobody talked about. I think it’s clear that Will has some sort of feelings for Mike.

Also, in the beginning of this season Joyce tells Will that “you will understand when you fall in love with someone” (she didn’t say girl) and Will shot back he would never fall in love. Remember he’s a gay kid in the 80’s.

I think Robin will help Will come out or at least help with self acceptance. I think you can have two gay characters in a show

by Anonymousreply 179July 5, 2019 7:11 PM

It's interesting to note that Mike didn't say "Don't like girls YET" and Will's reaction to that was speechless and embarrassed, not defensive and baffled like you'd expect from a straight kid.

I really liked Robin, too.

by Anonymousreply 180July 5, 2019 7:15 PM

I think there's a lot of projecting going on around here.

by Anonymousreply 181July 5, 2019 7:23 PM

I think some of you can't tell the difference between inferring and projecting.

by Anonymousreply 182July 5, 2019 7:49 PM

How is it projecting when the character description for Will in the pitch says, “is dealing with sexual identity issues”?

by Anonymousreply 183July 5, 2019 8:14 PM

r179 I think Will's probably going to come to Hawkins at Christmas a lot more confident in himself. And hopefully with a new haircut.

by Anonymousreply 184July 5, 2019 8:24 PM

Why is the black kid practically a day player now. Too bad Jordan Peele didn't create this.

by Anonymousreply 185July 5, 2019 9:02 PM

I wish Lucas had a bigger role, too, R185. Caleb is a pretty solid actor and has nice chemistry with the rest of the cast. His little sister was also a good addition to the cast. She was bratty, but that was deliberate, I think.

by Anonymousreply 186July 5, 2019 9:11 PM

Bowl cuts went out in the 70's, why do they have Mike and Will in those awful hairdos? Mike seemed to get uglier. I love Steve and the curly haired kid.

by Anonymousreply 187July 5, 2019 9:50 PM

Winona's scared darting eyes make her look like a lunatic. I realize she is supposed to be a worried mom but geesh take it down a notch.

by Anonymousreply 188July 5, 2019 9:53 PM

In the very first season, first or second episode after Will has gone missing, Joyce tells Hopper that Will has always been "sensitive" and that his father used to berate him by calling him gay. Hopper asks, "Well... is he?" Joyce hesitates and then shoots back, rather defensively, "He's lost, is what he is."

Moms always know.

by Anonymousreply 189July 5, 2019 9:54 PM
I did NOT see why he couldn't get out of there.

R165, you must be completely blind. I don't know how it could have been more obvious.

by Anonymousreply 190July 5, 2019 10:08 PM

To be honest, for Season 4 I hope they don't start filming for a year or so. I'd like to see them move the story ahead a couple years with the main kids portrayed as 16/17 year olds.

And, they can weed down the cast. Nancy and Jonathan can be off at college for Season 4.

by Anonymousreply 191July 5, 2019 10:37 PM
[R165], you must be completely blind. I don't know how it could have been more obvious.

Yes, you've already cunted out this particular sentiment. Clearly you have nothing new to add.

by Anonymousreply 192July 5, 2019 10:37 PM

Caleb is a fucking bore. They've never given him any particular personality and the actor is as bland as can be. It's like they said- Well, he's black... and that was enough for them. His sister can stay, but they should just kill him off.

by Anonymousreply 193July 5, 2019 10:39 PM

I felt sorry for Nancy and how she was belittled at the office. It was kind of satisfying how the bully and her boss died.

by Anonymousreply 194July 5, 2019 10:46 PM

R192, why don't you go back and watch it again. And this time pay attention.

by Anonymousreply 195July 5, 2019 10:59 PM

Season four probably wouldn't film until early 2020 and stream in 2021. They should time jump so they are 16/17 and they can drive at least.

by Anonymousreply 196July 5, 2019 11:28 PM

2 years is a RIDICULOUS amount of time to wait for a new season of a tv show. The novelty is already wearing off as is them fighting the same monster every time.

by Anonymousreply 197July 6, 2019 12:22 AM

I thought the season was going to take place all summer. It ended up only being a few days. And when Dustin came back from wherever he was, Will comments that "it's been like that all summer." Which at that point would've been like a week since school let out.

by Anonymousreply 198July 6, 2019 12:28 AM

r196 If they're doing Thanksgiving/Christmas story they can probably stream in 2020. The only reason this was delayed was they wanted 4th July release.

by Anonymousreply 199July 6, 2019 12:30 AM

Mostly enjoyed the nostalgia again - I was 14 years old at the time season 3 takes place, in a small, midwestern town. I did have some gripes similar to those already mentioned, though, to the point where I was crankily writing them down.

My small midwestern town had neither a community pool, nor a hospital. Given how small the Hawkins police department is, and how few the Main Street shops were, those amenities, plus a small newspaper, seem to belong to a larger town, more like a county seat.

No boy Mike's age would have mouthed off - SWORE - to an adult the way Mike did to Hopper in his truck. The kids would never have shushed that lady in the cinema who shushed them.

A town as small as Hawkins would not have: ... a mall. ... a Dunkin Donuts. The only chains would be the gas stations and the IGA. ... a public bus system. ... a phone booth by the side of a rural road. ... 911 services in 1985. Adults would have the police phone number memorized and always written down by the phone. ... a string quartet at the local Italian restaurant. The Italian restaurant is, in itself, a stretch. ... a public pool sauna. ... so few country folk. ... a network for the mayor's car phone. ... a mayor's office like that. ... a police chief who is so unconcerned with checking in with his colleagues when a major emergency is taking place.

A 1985 mall would not have: ... a tip jar. ... that silver spoolie gadget that holds multiple ice cream cones. ... bicycle racks like those loop wave ones you see today. ... those shiny wire shelves in the store room.

The hospital candy machine is not from 1985.

It looked like the mayor's property deeds were printed on a modern printer, not professionally printed with variables typed in.

So when the mayor is putting together the July 4th carnival, noone is aware of the massacre at the local hospital?

Given what happened in the past couple of years in this small town, wouldn't the police and mayor and every other resident there have reached out to the feds, if weird things started happening AGAIN? It took forever for Hopper to call his guy, and why such a secure protocol?

by Anonymousreply 200July 6, 2019 12:38 AM

From the time the Scoops gang got stuck in the elevator to the time they were finished defeating the monster in the mall was probably a solid 24 hours that had passed

by Anonymousreply 201July 6, 2019 12:47 AM
Bowl cuts went out in the 70's, why do they have Mike and Will in those awful hairdos? Mike seemed to get uglier. I love Steve and the curly haired kid.

Yeah, those haircuts were bad and totally off. Mike should’ve had a more Ralph Macchio, feathered center part look.

Steve continues to be the best thing about this show.

by Anonymousreply 202July 6, 2019 12:49 AM

This season really did nothing for me, unlike season one which really moved me. It was dark and sinister and mysterious, and sad. This just left me totally cold. It has definitely succumbed to sequelitis, and I don’t think they really have anything more to say or bring to the table. I’m surprised by the reviews which say it’s back on form. I found it to be quite the opposite, and I won’t be coming back. I’m fine leaving the characters where they are here.

by Anonymousreply 203July 6, 2019 3:16 AM

Honestly, I'm hoping they're done.

Unless they come back years later when all the kids are in college and have some fresh new idea or something.

This one works for me as a series finale.

by Anonymousreply 204July 6, 2019 3:19 AM

But I don't want Hopper stuck in a Russian prison.

I guess the next one may be with Eleven trying to get her powers back.

Jonathan does not look 17.

by Anonymousreply 205July 6, 2019 3:31 AM

Jonathan looks like a cross between Bud Cort and a pig fetus.

by Anonymousreply 206July 6, 2019 8:59 AM

Jonathan looks like he had fetal alcohol syndrome, so it's no surprise the actor is a druggie.

by Anonymousreply 207July 6, 2019 3:23 PM

Hopper is dead. If he lived through that, that'd be ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 208July 6, 2019 3:58 PM

I think he's not dead but captured by the Russians, but after that goodbye speech at the end it'll be a total copout to bring him back.

by Anonymousreply 209July 6, 2019 9:13 PM

The Russians having Renner would make sense since the question wasn't answered HOW the Russians knew about the portal to the Upside Down World in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 210July 6, 2019 9:52 PM

Hooper has to be dead. There was literally no moment, no time, no chance of him escaping out of there, or being dragged out.

What drugs are some of you on that you think he's still alive?

Seriously, if they pulled that shit, that'd be this show hitting bottom.

by Anonymousreply 211July 6, 2019 9:55 PM

Wanna bet, R211?

by Anonymousreply 212July 6, 2019 10:05 PM

R211, others were pulled out alive in the room where he was as articles have already pointed out. He’s either the American in the Soviet prison or the new monster.

by Anonymousreply 213July 6, 2019 10:08 PM
How is it projecting when the character description for Will in the pitch says, “is dealing with sexual identity issues”?

Link.

Nobody was pulled out alive of that room where the machine was. Everyone was vaporized. And he was gone immediately after, and there was zero time between the shrug, the turning of the key, and the explosion of the machine.

If they keep him alive, it would be such a colossal cheat that I'd just quit the show in disgust. I can't believe there's anyone so crass as to actually WANT something so stupid and impossible to happen.

by Anonymousreply 215July 6, 2019 10:11 PM

Both times they made it a point to show the soldiers who got disintegrated by the machine and left a bloody mess behind whereas Hopper "died" off screen and left zilch behind. So yeah, they can easily bring him back if they choose to.

by Anonymousreply 216July 6, 2019 10:12 PM

If they choose too, they're such hacks they should never be hired again.

by Anonymousreply 217July 6, 2019 10:15 PM
Hooper has to be dead. There was literally no moment, no time, no chance of him escaping out of there, or being dragged out. What drugs are some of you on that you think he's still alive?

It’s a tv show dear. They can do whatever the fuck they want.

Netflix confirms he’s not gay, nor will they allow the show to go there.

I feel sorry for the people that hope Hopper is dead as the creators couldn't have made it more obvious that he's not. I get not liking a "return from the dead", but they gave themselves way too many outs to bring him back, so you might as well make your peace with it now.

As for Will being confirmed gay in the series, I don't think the show could give it the proper development or attention anyway. So I personally am not concerned if it's revealed or not.

by Anonymousreply 220July 6, 2019 10:37 PM
And when Dustin came back from wherever he was, Will comments that "it's been like that all summer." Which at that point would've been like a week since school let out.

Pretty sure it was established that Dustin was at science camp for a month. Which fits with the early July setting. School year usually ends in late May/early June.

If they must do another season, I agree they should let time pass. And trim the bloated cast.

In the northeast, school ended the third week of June. I know it's different in the south cause of the heat. I don't think it would apply to Indiana.

by Anonymousreply 223July 6, 2019 10:54 PM

I liked this season much much more than season 2. It worked as a whole unlike season 2 which was messy in many ways.
If they choose too, they're such hacks they should never be hired again.

Since we did not see Hopper getting vaporized his fate is clearly left totally open. I personally expect him to come back since he's been so crucial to the show, and he doesn't really have a huge career outside of Stranger Things so why would he leave? While watching the show and before Hopper getting "killed" I imagined he'd go to the other side, and season 4 would be all about the kids and Winona rescuing him.

The Duffer Brothers are clearly going to make another season, unless Netflix pulls the plug. David Harbour told in an interview the post credit scene is a straight gateway to season 4.

I actually liked The Coke Boy and The Anorexic Girl together. I was getting ready to hate them but their scenes were fun mostly because of Nancy.

by Anonymousreply 224July 6, 2019 10:56 PM

I was just relieved they managed to find a wardrobe that covered Nancy up more so I didn't have to see her obviously underweight body.

No one is saying they WANT Hopper to come back. We're just saying there was no body shown and a throwaway line about a hidden American at the end, and we understand how television works.

by Anonymousreply 230July 6, 2019 11:40 PM

R220, I don't get why everyone is wanting this one note character, who clearly MUST be dead, to come back and just PROVE that this show is written by completely talentless hacks.

Seriously. Bringing him back would be totally jumping the shark.

by Anonymousreply 231July 7, 2019 12:18 AM

Hopper has been one of the main characters from the start and he is certainly not a one note character. You've been told in various ways why it's quite probable he's not dead but you keep ignoring the logic presented to you.

by Anonymousreply 232July 7, 2019 12:24 AM

I don't know if anyone has even expressed whether they want the character back. What is really being discussed is whether he is dead or not. And everyone is merely saying that the creators gave themselves an out. The doorway to the upside down was partially open, there was no pile of goo or whatever left behnd like before when the other people were killed by the weapon, then there was the "Not the american line."

They gave themselves a lot of options to bring the character back. No one has to like that, but it's clear as day that it's on the table.

Yeah Alexsi was the Barb of S3. And yes, killed by an homage to Terminator, which came out in 1984.

I thought this was better than S2, and still had that nostalgia factor. I don't know how they're going to carry off S4 when they're all in high school. And why does Dustin still have missing front teeth? He's too old!

by Anonymousreply 239July 7, 2019 3:42 AM

Of course Will is a babygay. Did you not see those shorts in the last few episodes! I agree with the posters saying that Noah is the best actor out of the cast. He was really something in S2 and they put him through a lot. I always felt that his violation by the mind flayer could be seen as a metaphor for sexual abuse and the trauma he would have gone through, so the idea that he was a gay kid being preyed on just sort of emphasized that.

Aleksei was also my favorite thing about S3. And the conspiracy guy developing a budding friendship with him was sweet.

by Anonymousreply 240July 7, 2019 3:54 AM

r222 yes on little boys but no 13 year old would be caught dead wearing a bowl cut.

Most schools in the Midwest are done by Memorial Day weekend....at least in the 80s.

In my Hawkins like town, school was done by Memorial Day and weirdly started the week before Labor Day Weekend....so, you'd come back to school them immediately have a three day weekend.

Season 1 Hawkins made sense...they clearly established it as a small town well under 10k.

Season 3 Hawkins makes zero sense with that huge mall and fancy restaurant. And, why is EVERY scene jam packed with extras? Every scene at the mall has 5000 people milling around.

by Anonymousreply 248July 7, 2019 7:55 AM
He was the head of the Soviet science project. Even though he partly changed sides (to save his own ass, btw) who knows how many people had died because of him. I most certainly didn't see him as an innocent victim à la Barb.

First he grew up in an oppressive regime. Second he became the head of the science project because his predecessor was killed for not delivering the desired outcome fast enough. Even in the US people do heinous shit not because they want to, but because they either got groomed to do it or are pushed in a situation where it's the lesser of two evils.

by Anonymousreply 249July 7, 2019 8:43 AM

I still haven't finished the season yet, but wtf is up with Robin's hair? Looks nothing like 80's hair. It's way too distracting. Couldn't they at least have given her a perm or something? WTF?!

by Anonymousreply 250July 7, 2019 9:01 AM

r237, what I meant was that he was an endearing character with an unexpected death.

by Anonymousreply 251July 7, 2019 12:39 PM

There was a whole gentrification subplot about how everyone in the town and surrounding areas had abandoned all the local businesses in favor of the mall which lead to Nancy and Jonathan interviewing Mrs Driscoll, did you miss that R248? Admittedly they dropped mention of it halfway through the season but it wasn't out of nowhere.

by Anonymousreply 252July 7, 2019 4:59 PM

r251 His deaths kind of a big issue I had this series honestly. They introduced side characters, spend a large amount of time for an 8 hour show on them. Then kill them and never mention them after. RIP Smirnoff, Newspaper dicks, and Fertiliser Grandma.

by Anonymousreply 253July 7, 2019 6:46 PM

R219 Well that's disappointing but not suprising. Robin's character was clearly the "safe" way Netflix decided to deal with criticism regarding LGBT representation in the show and even that was lackluster. Besides I suspect Robin is bi, not a lesbian. Which would be an ideal cop-out for the show.

by Anonymousreply 254July 7, 2019 7:02 PM

If only I had thought to pick Fertiliser Grandma as my authenticated name.

by Anonymousreply 255July 7, 2019 7:08 PM

Who the fuck decided to style Robin's hair like it's 2019? Her hair doesn't look like it's from the 80's whatsoever. It's distracting. All the other hairstyles are very 80's, except hers.

R219 Seems like that writer was just inferring things from the Netflix rep they spoke to, who for whatever reason got more pissy that the question was posed to a 14 year-old actor before the character has even come out. Everyone knows Will is likely gay. Based on the show it seems clear that the creators of the show and Noah Schapp have already discussed Will’s sexuality and feelings for Mike, but it hasn’t been made explicit (and maybe never will be) which is why Noah gives non-answers in interviews. I think they just want to avoid any controversy from homophobes insisting gays are forcing their agenda upon kids.

R248 A big-ass mall is going to attract many out-of-towners to see the big fuss. Part of the fast pace of the death of small town businesses is that the town administrations actually loved the prospect of more money (for now) coming into the city through the brute commercialism of a new mall. Eventually if you didn't have a mall, no matter how kind and productive your small stores were, you were barely even counted as a destination.

by Anonymousreply 265July 8, 2019 7:04 AM

Apparently a large number of people have decided Will is asexual because of the don't like girls remark. So there we go. Every gay or straight 13 year old who isn't already in a committed relationship should prepare for a life of celibacy.

by Anonymousreply 266July 8, 2019 12:49 PM

If they ultimately decide that Will is not gay/bi/whatever, then what was the point of the "Just because you don't like girls" line in the first place? They could've easily relayed the message that Will felt left behind without that line, as it seems to be an obvious hint at his sexuality. Maybe Noah isn't comfortable continuing this arc of the character?

by Anonymousreply 267July 8, 2019 1:00 PM

There are a lot of people who are oddly resistant to Will being gay. Which is weird, scripts have shown that the writers have him as a gay character. It really doesn't need to be debated.

Yes, it's very obvious Hopper is not dead. One, they purposely did not show him actually dying. We never see what happens to him.

It's just like that old comic books trope, no body, no death. Obviously he escaped into the gate.

by Anonymousreply 273July 8, 2019 1:44 PM

There are people stupid enough to think the "Not the American" line from the Russians at the end about whoever was in the other cell is about Murray, when we actually saw Murray and Joyce escape together and encounter American troops and be rescued, so it doesn't surprise me that there are people who are absolutely baffled how Hopper could have lived.

by Anonymousreply 274July 8, 2019 2:49 PM

I didn't realize the mayor was Cary Elwes until after I saw the entire thing. Doesn't help that Netflix cuts off the credits after 4 seconds and I am never fast enough to hit "Keep Watching." Elwes looks better than he did a few years ago when he was starting to bloat.

by Anonymousreply 275July 8, 2019 2:55 PM

r268 He seems to be an ally going by him going off at some homophobe on Instagram the other week. Beyond that I doubt a 14 year old in their first major role really has much input on their character arc. If they fuck over Will I'm more inclined to blame the Netflix side of things.

Killing off Hopper was a MASSIVE mistake. Also, making Robin a dyke. Not that I should be surprised. Netflix is dyke central. Meanwhile they can't even utter the word gay for Will. Fucking pathetic. Once again lesbian is ok but gay is wrong. I'm starting to hate Netflix. Fucking homophobic POS.

by Anonymousreply 280July 8, 2019 3:24 PM

A new character (Robin) got more development in one season than Will got in THREE fucking seasons. Watch this show STILL not acknowledge Will's sexuality next season while Robin is free to kiss other women. Of course.

Lesbians lesbians and more lesbians while gays are erased once again. Why am I not surprised.
There are a lot of people who are oddly resistant to Will being gay.

Let me guess, Robin being a dyke is ok though? I bet a million bucks the only reason they introduced a dyke this season is because they will NEVER acknowledge Will's sexuality. They add a lesbisn instead so thry can fake being inclusive, which we all know is bullshit. Watch my words come true next season. Anyways, this season was so offensive and borderline homophobic I don't even want to watch the next season. Fuck this shit. I'm out.

by Anonymousreply 291July 8, 2019 3:55 PM

The Duffer Bros, made it deliberately vague who the American Prisoner could be. I'm 3 episodes in of Season 3 so far. Jonathan is sexy and I've always liked him. Steve annoys the fuck out of me. Jonathan looks like he has a big hot cock, because his underwear bulge was huge. Billy is even hotter like usual. Love my Australians because I am one. Haven't understood what is going on with Billy with yet since he got taken by the Upside Down creature or whatever. Undecided if it's better than Season 1 or 2 at this point, but overall I love Stranger Things. It gives me nostalgia and I love the opening credits and theme song. Jesus, I smell a loon in here and a creepy one at that who apparently needs to have a 14 year old Indiana boy come out of the closet for his pleasure.

14 year old rural Indiana gay boys in 1985 weren't apt to "come out" at that age, even with a loving family/friends situation.

The lesbian woman who just came out, hesitantly to a friend, was 19....which, makes sense.

If you're needing to see Will come out, you're probably going to have to wait until Season 5 or so.

by Anonymousreply 310July 8, 2019 7:54 PM

I've heard it will have 4 seasons. Not that I'll watch the last season anyway, lmao. What they did to Will is unforgivable. Erasing a gay character and replacing him with a lesbian... smh.

by Anonymousreply 311July 8, 2019 8:09 PM
Would audiences really have applauded "Back to the Future" in 1985? People do applaud movies nowadays, which I find weird.

Oh yes. My parents dragged me to it (I was being a brat) and of course I loved it by the end. I remember the theater applauded at the end. That movie was a huge hit. We went to it probably three times that summer.

by Anonymousreply 312July 8, 2019 8:09 PM

This was set in the summer between middle school and them starting highschool.

by Anonymousreply 313July 8, 2019 8:34 PM

13 or 14...who cares?

And

Who says they've "erased" the gay character and "replaced" him with a lesbian? The show made it kinda clear how they're portraying Will.

The Loon needs to take their meds.

by Anonymousreply 314July 8, 2019 11:43 PM

Early and mid 80s were the height of AIDS hysteria. I was a young closeted gay boy during that time and there is NO FUCKING WAY I would have come out. I knew I was gay from the age of 11, but didn't come out until I was 18, out of high school and all that drama, and potentially able to be out on my own "just in case".

by Anonymousreply 315July 9, 2019 12:01 AM

I have a feeling a troll is pretending to be a militant gay man. He sounds a lot like the guy who's been going on about how disgusting bi men are. The bi hater was getting tons of likes which made me suspect even more there's a deliberate troll attack happening. That said we all know there are unstable people posting here so who really knows.

by Anonymousreply 316July 9, 2019 12:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 318July 9, 2019 9:37 AM

R318 I'm still pissed they made a new character gay instead of just confirming that Will is indeed gay. The dyke got more character development in one season than Will got in three. Talk about offensive.

by Anonymousreply 319July 9, 2019 10:33 AM
I don't understand all the love for Alexie. I found the character annoying and unnecessary.

That whole subplot was unnecessary given the kids already cracked the code. We also don't find out any more about the Russians motivation than we do at the beginning of the season. It was still entertaining, but the writing was kind of weird there.

by Anonymousreply 320July 9, 2019 11:02 AM

It did NOT get better after episode 4.

by Anonymousreply 321July 9, 2019 11:02 AM

Keeping the characters separated for so long is kind of lazy. It's not like they didn't have phones in 1985.

by Anonymousreply 322July 9, 2019 11:04 AM

r320 Both the adult (Not Steve or Robin) subplots were unecessary tbh. All Jonathan and Nancy's do is to figure out the Mindflayer is back, and controlling people. By the time they get there the kids have already figured it out and run tests on Billy.

by Anonymousreply 323July 9, 2019 11:16 AM

I would have liked to see Robin and Steve get together. Nothing wrong with her being a lesbian, but they had genuine chemistry and it would have been earned. It will be hard to replicate next season if they introduce a new love interest for Steve.

by Anonymousreply 324July 9, 2019 11:23 AM

They also have too many characters already so it would be difficult to give Robin's relationship any depth if they decide to go that route. Steve and Robin just work well together. Making her a lesbian was an odd choice.

by Anonymousreply 325July 9, 2019 11:27 AM

They can continue to be best buds and work well together. There's nothing saying either has to have a love interest in any future season. There ARE people who are single in this world, you know.

by Anonymousreply 326July 9, 2019 12:01 PM

Seriously r326. Everyone is so obsessed with the idea that people have to be coupled off in a romantic relationship. I think it was nice that they decided to focus on Steve having this platonic relationship in his life.

And frankly Robin (and Will) live in smalltown Indiana in the 80s. The idea of either one of them having a love interest is wishful thinking.

by Anonymousreply 327July 9, 2019 12:15 PM

R324 and R325 I agree. I was bummed when it turned out she was a lesbian. They refuse to acknowledge Will's sexuality, yet add a lesbian? It's offensive. It's not just that though, it's the fact that Robin and Steve had actual chemistry and Steve deserves to be happy. He's the only one without a significant other, well, except Will. It made no sense to make Robin a lesbian. They only did it for diversity points after people called them out on the non-existent LGBT characters. After people criticizing them about not making Will gay, they couldn't have at least introduced another gay male character? Nah, they just HAD to add insult to injury by making it a lesbian, so now we have zero gay (male) characters, after being teased that Will is gay for three seasons, fantastic. Yes, I'm pissed off. What they did is unforgivable, lazy but more importantly pathetic. They didn't have the balls to depict gay men, so they introduced the safe choice, a lesbian instead. Nah, I'm no here for this.

by Anonymousreply 328July 9, 2019 12:22 PM
Nah, I'm not here for this.

r332 No wonder they keep pushing the Duffers for more than 4/5 seasons By the time 4 comes out NBC will have pulled the Office and Brooklyn 99 for their own service as well.

by Anonymousreply 333July 9, 2019 1:03 PM

I rather hope the Duffer Bros stick to their guns and end the show on a high note (instead of milking the cash cow until everbody begs for it to end) and instead work on a new show for Netflix. They showed they can create something that's popular with the masses when they are given the time and budget.

by Anonymousreply 334July 9, 2019 3:28 PM

I'm ready for one more season but don't know how much longer I'll care about the Upside-Down.

by Anonymousreply 335July 9, 2019 3:34 PM

by Anonymousreply 336July 9, 2019 5:30 PM

Was anyone surprised when Billy said "fucking", when he was locked in the steam room?? That's the first swear word they've ever had in Stranger Things.

by Anonymousreply 337July 9, 2019 5:33 PM

I thought it was odd how little Dacre was in the show this season, especially considering he had to drop out of a movie because of the ST shooting schedule, which dragged on.

by Anonymousreply 338July 9, 2019 5:37 PM

And I hit post too quickly- I also thought it was odd that they didn't do as much with him and killed him off considering he was the breakout star of Season 2. He was everywhere for a couple months at the end of 2017 and was in the top 5 IMDB starmeter for several weeks. People were really curious about him and I thought the Duffers would take more advantage of that.

by Anonymousreply 339July 9, 2019 5:39 PM

R339 I thought they did a lot with him. Most critics say his character arc and backstory are one of the best things about this season. Like a poster said upthread, the stuff with the kids and Steve and Robin were great. Joyce and Hopper weren't given as much to do but they provided some nice character moments. Jonathan and Nancy were just bland.

I think they will go high tech next season, perhaps riff on techno fear classics like Wargames. And if Hopper is still alive, we'll probably get to see a lot more of the Upside Down. The show hasn't lost me yet.

by Anonymousreply 340July 9, 2019 5:45 PM

What was so great about it? They basically turned him into a zombie by Episode 2 and he stumbled around like Tor Johnson in Plan 9 From Outer Space for the rest of the season. And his "redemption" was completely unearned.

r341 They should have done a lot more with Billy/Dacre. Last season Will doesn't become fully flayed until about the mid point and his personality breaks through when his family and Mike tag team him with love. Billy's one stroyline is trying to bang a MILF then his redemption is a lackluster mind rape by El and her essentially saying "remember how cool surfing was?". The complete uninvolvement of Max in his story is a massive missed opportunity.

by Anonymousreply 347July 9, 2019 8:52 PM

Winona looks great. She doesn't need to turn into an Ashley Judd wax face.

by Anonymousreply 349July 9, 2019 11:32 PM

Why did they cast an Australian in the role of Billy? I was a teenager in the 80's and Dacre was nothing like any of the bad boys I encountered.

Steve’s sailor outfit with his white socks and hairy legs. Yum!

by Anonymousreply 367July 10, 2019 9:19 PM

That one ranting poster in this thread is way OTT, but it did rub me the wrong way how Will's gayness basically manifested itself as arrested development. It reminded me of a trope identifed in Vito Russo's "Celluloid Closet", where the gay character in an ensemble cast is the only who doesn't have a romantic interest, and instead comes across as asexual to make him more palatable.

by Anonymousreply 368July 10, 2019 9:25 PM

Did any fellow Halloween/Michael Myers fans notice the subtle Easter egg reference to Halloween II? The “Hawkins Memorial Hospital” logo you see prominently displayed in the waiting room area is the exact same logo as the Haddonfield Memorial Hospital logo in H2.

by Anonymousreply 372July 11, 2019 2:34 AM

Very artfully done season. Love how they nail the 80s vibe completely. The very end, though, makes it clear that they're leaving an opening for a season 4. Sad to lose 2 main characters, including one of my absolute favorite (won't spoil it for those whose haven't see all the episodes). As mentioned earlier, too bad Joe Keery didn't get at least one chance to show off his major asset -- his impressive VPL. Could have used more shirtless Dacre Montgomery scenes as well. He is an actor who should be naked 24/7. His major attributes don't include his acting.

The great casting goes far in selling the show.

The writing was kind of all over the map again like season 2 (season 1 remains awesome and stands alone) but the cast is so likeable that they really keep you watching...

by Anonymousreply 384July 11, 2019 9:01 AM

This season hasn't gotten the attention the fist two did, did it?

by Anonymousreply 385July 11, 2019 10:09 AM

r380 See I'll agree with his interpretation to an extent. For better or worse Will's gayness is only tangentially his issue this season. Except when Mike all but calls him a fag obviously.
Will Byers, twelve, is a sweet, sensitive kid with sexual identity issues. He only recently came to the realization that he does not fit into the 1980s definition of “normal.” His innocent choices, such as colorful clothes, prove a constant source of bullying. Like Mike, Will escapes through fantasy gaming, where he can be himself, uninhibited. He has a close relationship with his mother, Joyce. His brother, Jonathan, helps raise him in lieu of their father, who abandoned them four years ago

That's his original character bio, and while most of the other characters have changed dramatically (Mike doesn't have a birth mark covering his face) Will's is still broadly true to the character. But I think the most important part for 3 is "Will escapes through fantasy gaming, where he can be himself, uninhibited". In this season the quiet boy puts on Purple wizard robes and starts yelling at his friends. The shows official comic has him pretty much treating the nightmare of the Upside down in season 1 as a live action D&D session to keep his sanity. His friends ripping that ability away from him, and in the case of Mike outright ignoring him is his problem. Him being gay plays a part in that he thinks he can only be his open colourful self in a fantasy setting.

Joe Keery and Maya Hawke have incredible chemistry

by Anonymousreply 388July 11, 2019 1:02 PM

The show has been good at depicting the 80s. The more laidback looks of 1983 in the first season to the all-out 80s assault of 1985 in the current one.

by Anonymousreply 389July 11, 2019 1:07 PM

They're really making a dog's dinner out of the issue of Will's sexuality. It would have been such an obvious way to add a modern perspective to their 80s pastiche (and they managed to pull the same thing off perfectly with Maya Hawke's character), I really don't understand why they're being so weird and awkward about it.

by Anonymousreply 390July 11, 2019 2:14 PM

Being a young gay teen in the early-to-mid 80s was a very weird and awkward thing. Anti-gay hate was rampant due to AIDS hysteria. I know. I was a closeted young teen in the early 80s. Having Will burst out of the closet at his age is COMPLETELY UNREALISTIC.

by Anonymousreply 391July 11, 2019 2:27 PM

Agreed, R391. The 80s were a terrible time to be a kid dealing with your sexuality.

by Anonymousreply 392July 11, 2019 2:31 PM

r391 r392

A character doesn't have to be out of the closet to be unambiguously gay to the audience.

by Anonymousreply 393July 11, 2019 2:34 PM

His friends and family already suspect / know that Will's gay. I think Will is holding on to his childhood friendships and their D&D gaming, because that distracts him to face his own sexual identity. But with the friends having girlfriends and their straight relationships taking precious time from their boys only friendship he is the odd man out and he's not ready yet to come to terms with who he is when he isn't with his friends.

by Anonymousreply 394July 11, 2019 2:51 PM

R394. Indeed. I didn't even realize it AT ALL at the time, but part of my retreat specifically into video games in my preteens (2000s) was that it meant I didn't have to pursue girlfriends. I was just 'the nerd', even if most other parts of my personality would surprise others away from that archetype.

by Anonymousreply 395July 11, 2019 3:40 PM

395 here again. I can definitely agree with most negative critique of how they're treating Will, but 'arrested development' still is a part of many gay males' lives. I even came out at 13 but had a little of it, my partner came out late teens and didn't truly treat himself as out until early twenties and it's still reflected in him in some ways, and I know semi-closeted folks even into their 30s that if they decided to publicly be their full true selves would probably go through a spree of living like their in their teens-to-twenties. Like it or not, its a part of why collections of gays like pride parades can be so charged.

It's not just that they broke out singing Limahl's "Neverending Story" theme in the most discordant and corny way possible, it's that they REPRISED it at the end, too!

Not funny in context; not cool. The success of the show has lowered the creators' inhibitions to TOTALLY GEEK OUT to '80s shit, and I must ask you to gag me with a spoon.

by Anonymousreply 402July 11, 2019 9:32 PM

Perhaps the reason for all this nostalgia is that all the things that we were promised that came with a new century has fallen flat. All that we were promised in the new century either never came to be, or turned out to be a fad or too easily outsourced. Speaking of tech, I see there is currently a backlash against nerd culture, with people wanting to go back and enjoy simpler things that don't require multiple devices. The fact that Stranger Things doesn't pretend to be anything but low brow is part of what makes it so appealing.

People are also coming to the realization that the old jobs still have more stability, relationships built on real life interaction still has more weight, music played with real instruments played back on analog technology still sounds better, and that entertainment meant to entertain instead of lecture still brings more joy.

by Anonymousreply 403July 11, 2019 10:49 PM

Show is a huge hit. There will of course be a Season 4 and I'm guessing a Season 5 if they think they can squeeze one more story out of the characters before the actors age out of their roles.

I'm hoping the fact that Joyce, Jonathan, Will and Elle moved away means they're going to open up a new location for storytelling. They've pretty much sucked Hawkins dry at this point.

I watched a YouTube video of an urban explorer sneaking onto the mall set, which was filmed in a mostly dead but still operational mall outside Atlanta. The painstaking attention to detail on the mall set is unbelievable. There are parts of the mall you never even see, or at best just see as a distant storefront on the show, that are fully dressed stores stocked with inventory. For example, directly next to the movie theater there’s a computer store complete with Atari’s (1985 was the year Nintendo came to America, but would take a year to gain traction), games, posters on the wall. And yet you never see any of this on the show. In an article, the Production Designer explained that The Duffer Brothers will often write in scenes on the fly, and they wanted to make sure they had as much of a fully dressed 1985 mall as possible to accommodate that.

by Anonymousreply 409July 12, 2019 12:12 PM
Mike also has a dust-up with his best friend Will (Noah Schnapp), in which Mike snaps, "It’s not my fault you don’t like girls." It's a scene that many fans consider to be confirmation of their long-running speculation about Will’s sexuality. According to Wolfhard, it might not be that clear.
“There were a lot of different versions of that scene,” Wolfhard tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We tried, ‘It’s not my fault you don’t like girls yet.’ I don’t even know if it had to do with Will’s sexuality; I think Mike was just mad…. It’s all up to the Duffers and what they want to do.”

The actors are being non-committal about Will because the Duffers are being non-committal about Will but when you look at the trajectory, he's going to be clear enough gay by end of a Season 4 or 5. That is, he'll be an at least semi-closeted gay teen boy in the 80s - so many would late bloom as they go to the city later, so his story isn't about this (though creator choice and pressures may move things one way or another).

I'm all for an outright boyfriend in Season 4 but whatever. It'd be funny and fitting if it happened while the other couples get split up, have to break up, or have already been separated, etc. Also awaken more 'magical' powers for Will and we have us a great time for the actor to stretch his skills!

Its haunting looking at Will because he at least 2/3-3/4 looks like me as a teen so much.

I think Hawkins is still a valid location, but no longer as the absolute center. Its fine if they, for example, don't have the town at all in S4, then return there towards end of S5 (apocalyptic?). Whatever works. Its a keystone, but what is actually more of a keystone is the Upside Down itself.

How did the SOVIET Russians manage to build such a high tech facility under our noses below our malls?

by Anonymousreply 429July 14, 2019 8:03 AM

Have The Duffer Brothers commented on Georgia's new heartbeat law? Maybe they want to take the entire story out of Hawkins so they don't have to commit to filming in Atlanta. Maybe they'll pull a Laverne & Shirley and the adventure continues in Burbank, CA

by Anonymousreply 430July 14, 2019 1:00 PM

I thought Suzie's acting was very theatrical.

by Anonymousreply 431July 14, 2019 2:59 PM

I LURVED silly suzie

by Anonymousreply 432July 14, 2019 3:10 PM

The Neverending Story song scene gives me goosebumps.

But I think that Suzie will move on, and that when they're a bit older (and the age difference doesn't matter so much), Dustin and Erica will recognize they're in love with each other.

by Anonymousreply 433July 14, 2019 4:43 PM
when they're a bit older (and the age difference doesn't matter so much), Dustin and Erica will recognize they're in love with each other.

That doesn't work - by that time the show will be long over.

by Anonymousreply 434July 14, 2019 8:13 PM

R433 I had the same thought

by Anonymousreply 435July 14, 2019 9:23 PM

Out of this group of kids, the only one I can see making it through puberty into an attractive adult with a continuing career will be Noah Schnapps, mark my words.

by Anonymousreply 436July 15, 2019 12:48 AM

A poster upthread asked about mores and malls in the eighties, yes, you were a kid, and accompanied by your friends you’d visit the mall without adult supervision fine. I did both in my day, but they were the eighties equivalent of a playground of sorts.

by Anonymousreply 437July 15, 2019 1:01 AM

I watched the last episode again, just because.

by Anonymousreply 438July 15, 2019 11:40 AM

Where exactly is Joyce Byers moving to and how can she afford this major change? She's a single mom working a dead-end retail job with two boys (and now has an extra mouth to feed with Eleven). Things aren't exactly looking like they're on an upswing for her.

by Anonymousreply 439July 15, 2019 6:12 PM

Oh, and all of her (potential) love interests end up killed by monsters.

She's kind of a tragic, cursed woman.

by Anonymousreply 440July 15, 2019 6:14 PM

R440, wouldn't Joyce sell Hopper's house and use some of the funds towards the care of Eleven?

by Anonymousreply 441July 15, 2019 6:38 PM

Hopper's house was trashed by the Mindflayer. Good luck selling that dump.

Anyway there was a massive cover-up story about Starcourt and all the dead, surely "they" could have spent a little money for Joyce since she helped save America.

by Anonymousreply 442July 15, 2019 6:52 PM

Joyce needs a break today, and not like a "let's sing never ending story " kind of break

by Anonymousreply 443July 15, 2019 6:54 PM

Is Joyce moving to Indianapolis? Maybe Will convinced her to move to California so that he can be his true gay self?

by Anonymousreply 444July 15, 2019 6:57 PM

the rumor is near NYC so that Jonathan can go to school (photography??)

by Anonymousreply 445July 15, 2019 7:01 PM

I'd think Indianapolis would be too close, it's also here Lonny lives which non f them want to put up with. Chicago possibly if they want to bring back El's sisters gang. Or they could also go really meta and have them move either to Maine or Montauk.

by Anonymousreply 446July 15, 2019 7:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 456July 16, 2019 12:19 AM

by Anonymousreply 461July 16, 2019 1:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 462July 16, 2019 3:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 463July 16, 2019 4:11 AM

r458- people used to eavesdrop on the phones all the time- you would have at least one phone per level in the house, or 2 or 3 scattered (kitchen, office, living room, possibly bedroom). You would always scream at someone to pick up or get off the phone because of the distance.
“There was this gray, Everlast midriff shirt that was initially paired with the lifeguard shorts that almost made the cut,” “It was an amazing shirt. There's a photo of Rob Lowe wearing it in the 1980s. At first, I was really hesitant, but then it looked awesome. It literally was a midriff that came only a couple of inches below my nipple line. And it had long sleeves, and was made of sweat material with an Everlast logo. I thought that was kind of cool.”

And I just saw a pic of him on FB this past week, and he's OBESE, totally bald, and his face is just ugly as hell.

I have no idea how such a beautiful guy could turn so repugnant so quickly. Other than, I guess, he started voting Republican and apparently got married.

by Anonymousreply 476July 17, 2019 3:58 AM

R473 I just took a Facebook look through guys I kinda knew in high school that I felt too male (that is a joke), nerdy, and gangly for them. I'm 29 and I look a good and appealing (though not hot until I get more to the gym) mid-20s. They're mid-or-late 20s and look very 30s, often rough, and its because of their worklife, gunning for one or more kids asap, and likely stuff like hard drinking.

It can sometimes take just 5-10 years for it all to go to crap.

by Anonymousreply 477July 17, 2019 4:42 AM

Why would Eleven go with the Byers? Would it really be up to her?

by Anonymousreply 478July 17, 2019 5:02 AM

by Anonymousreply 484July 18, 2019 1:22 AM

The homoeroticization of Billy continued even more strongly this season--but what a good 1980s piece be without inexplicable homoeroticism?

by Anonymousreply 485July 18, 2019 3:54 AM

How so? Billy was possessed for most of the season

by Anonymousreply 486July 18, 2019 3:58 AM

Because the whole season, Billy was photographed shirtless in shorts or in a wifebeater and tight jeans dripping with sweat, his bare guns gleaming.

by Anonymousreply 487July 18, 2019 4:00 AM

There was no homoeroticism of Billy. He flirted with middle aged women. Additionally, he abducted young women and said rapey things to them while serving them up to a monster who wanted to attach its tentacle to their faces.

by Anonymousreply 488July 18, 2019 4:00 AM

A sexy guy isn't automatically homoerotic, dumbass. Homoeroticism requires some aspect of HOMO in it.

by Anonymousreply 489July 18, 2019 4:58 AM

He comes to a very Wagnerian end

by Anonymousreply 490July 18, 2019 11:13 AM

Started slow but definitely a huge improvement over season 2.

by Anonymousreply 491July 18, 2019 11:53 AM

R483 of course they wouldn’t really kill him, he and Millie basically make this show.

by Anonymousreply 492July 18, 2019 12:03 PM

The way the Duffer bros shot Dacre's butt in closeup in season 2 can very clearly be seen as homoerotic. Just like making Dacre practically the only one showing skin in season 3 as well, since we all know it's the Duffer brothers calling the shots. Homoeroticism doesn't mean the characters must be doing something gay on screen. It can be homoerotic to portray men in a sexual way. Dacre was sort of playing the role of hot big titted girls of action movies from the 80s. He was ALWAYS wearing super tight jeans and he was clearly portrayed in a very sexualized way.

by Anonymousreply 493July 18, 2019 12:28 PM

Literally look at the word r493. It's HOMO-eroticism, not eroticism.

Billy and Steve's gym scene last season was textbook homoerotic, you had these naked guys having this very charged scene together. If there is no same-sex nature to a scene it's not homoeroticism, the base word is homosexuality.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 494July 18, 2019 1:04 PM

And I would add what you are commenting on, which is true, is that they film Dacre in a way that he is meant to eye candy. But those are two different things.

by Anonymousreply 495July 18, 2019 1:16 PM

I used to know a movie buff who would throw around the word "homoerotic" one minute, and then argue against the concept of the male gaze in cinema.

Don't disappoint me, r493. Say the male gaze is nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 496July 18, 2019 1:17 PM

He can’t be eyebcandy with that hair and he is a shitty actor.

by Anonymousreply 497July 18, 2019 2:57 PM
A sexy guy isn't automatically homoerotic, dumbass. Homoeroticism requires some aspect of HOMO in it.

Eroticizing male bodies on camera is homoerotic--the heteroerotic gaze would treat the male body as non-erotic.

You're really having a meltdown over this.

by Anonymousreply 498July 18, 2019 4:23 PM

R498, the only characters seen ogling Billy's eroticized body were female.

by Anonymousreply 499July 18, 2019 4:25 PM

Eroticizing male bodies on camera is not being homoerotic. It's being politically correct. Today's female viewers, straight from the #me-too movement, are sick of shows where only females are supposed to show off their bodies and just be pretty accessories instead of major players in the plot and message. This show delivers several strong female characters who are central to the plot.

by Anonymousreply 500July 18, 2019 4:29 PM

The Duffer brothers are male, so the gaze of the camera is male.

by Anonymousreply 501July 18, 2019 4:30 PM

Well, a lot of the viewers are female.

After #me-too, putting a nearly naked female onscreen just seems sleazy. Especially when half of your cast--and many of your viewers--and younger than 18.

The character of Billy works at a swimming pool. What do you expect him to wear? A three-piece suit?

by Anonymousreply 502July 18, 2019 4:38 PM

The audience gazes, as in watching and paying close attention to certain things. Like the offhand remark "It's not my / our fault that you don't like girls!".

by Anonymousreply 509July 18, 2019 8:20 PM

It’s a silly debate that depends entirely on dueling definitions of a term of art. Many people do use the term homoerotic when a male artist creates an eroticized representation of a male even when their is no overt or implied sexual interaction with another male.

Joe Keery is pretty average looking to me, but he's really charismatic and likeable. I didn't think they had sexual chemistry, but both he and Maya Hawke have terrific comic timing, especially together. I didn't find her coming out scene unbelievable at all. There WERE open-minded people in the 80s, and her sheer terror in telling him was realistic.

I don't know what you mean by "too studied" but speaking as someone who has dealt with a lot of 9-11-year-olds, I thought she rang really true and that the actress did a good job of showing plenty of little-kid vulnerability underneath the know-it-all bravado

Yes, hon. You seem so shocked by this concept.

This is from the very first paragraph of Pauline Kael's New Yorker review of "Rambo."
[bold]Rambo has been programmed with (a) homoeroticism,[/bold] (b) self-pity, (c) self-righteousness, (d) sweat, and (e) an insatiable need to be crucified over and over.
So Rambo and Rocky are homoerotic movies because the male characters were shirtless or dressed lightly when they were exercising or competing in sports?

He has a sour pout on his face, and he’s given to deep, enigmatic utterances, such as “To survive a war you have to become war.”

R562, that article suggests Frodo and Sam we’re lovers. Well, I never in all my life! If such a thing were possible, I’m certain Datalounge would have been all over it.

R564

There's been slashfic about Frodo and Sam for ages. Fili/Kili (who are brothers) were also a popular pairing after the first Hobbit came out.

With bowl cuts like those dorks have, they will likely remain virgins until the next decade

Julia Kristeva should post on every thread.

I was out in high school in the eighties in a small town (population ~6,000) It was is the northeast though so probably a lot easier than Indiana. That said the fear of gay men because of AIDS was insane even there and teachers routinely made homophobic statements in class. (Don’t get me started on that POS Dukakis.) There were no out gay gays in my school. So the Robyn/Will portrayal rings true to me.

Is the Russian villain a nod to Terminator?

by Anonymousreply 571July 22, 2019 7:46 PM

No, the prince of tides, rose

by Anonymousreply 572July 22, 2019 11:50 PM

To have Billy come on to the mom like he was some suave stud was laughable, just like her taking him seriously. The kid's body was nothing to speak of and his hair was ridiculous even for the time. This would have to have been a really small town for him to have been a hot number. Anyplace else he would have been an object of ridicule.

It's just a story for kids on the TEEVEE, R573. Not a documentary.

I think Dorothy Zbornak.

Heaton looked like a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 584July 26, 2019 1:07 PM

Of course Hopper is coming back. That's the whole reason they tacked on that addendum to the end, to let you know he was alive somewhere. Remember, the Russian hitman referred to Hopper as "The American" when he was tracking him down.

Without all the Hollywood magic, Heaton looks like the "after" in those scaremongering before and after meth mugshots.

R586 he can’t pass for 25 et alone 18? Jesus was he supposed to be 15 during the first season?

It's hilarious that Keery is the oldest of the "teenagers", but he looks the youngest.
I didn't find her coming out scene unbelievable at all. There WERE open-minded people in the 80s, and her sheer terror in telling him was realistic.

I must have dozed off for that scene, what did she say?

by Anonymousreply 595July 28, 2019 11:37 PM

Dacre was cute as a teen. It's hilarious that just because he still has a bit of body fat, we're supposed to believe he was shunned for being unattractive.

by Anonymousreply 596July 28, 2019 11:53 PM

Heaton could play Bill Hader's son.

by Anonymousreply 597July 29, 2019 12:34 AM

Was Robyn coming out as lez to a straight guy any less believable than an out Will?
