And, I read that’s is straight-washed. I saw previews and in one scene it looks like Elton is longingly looking at a woman.

. . . and managed to look NOTHING LIKE Dame Reg!

Save it for the premier.

Yeah. He sounds great when he sings certain styles like when he sings Van Morrison's "Moondance" at the .59 second mark. He tends to be too effected when he sings.

R18 He's not the one who decides the studios don't want out actors for lead roles in big films

by Anonymousreply 22January 6, 2019 7:31 AM
He's not the one who decides the studios don't want out actors for lead roles in big films

He has a say as he and his husband are producers. The way that Brian May and Roger Taylor had a say in who got cast for "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Initially Elton wanted Tom Hardy who was attached to it for a few years (Elton even gave him one of his costumes). Then either during shooting or right after shooting Kingsman 2, Taron reached out to the director of Rocketman to see if Tom Hardy was still in for the role and if not he wanted to audition for the role. By that time he knew Elton from Kingsman 2, he knew the director because he directed Taron in "Eddie the Eagle" and the executive producer is Matthew Vaughn who directed the Kingsman films. As these things often goes, it is who you know.

by Anonymousreply 23January 6, 2019 9:09 AM

Can Taron outdo Rami? Who’s better?

I'll be surprised if he ever breaks out as a huge star. He's very sexy, but he's so short. You can be short and ethnic and be a male star, but it's very hard to be short and WASPy and be a male star. It's do-able, but it's very hard.

by Anonymousreply 42February 19, 2019 9:00 PM

R54, Exactly!! He sounds nothing like Elton John and I don’t even want to think of him hitting the high notes on Crocodile Rock.

by Anonymousreply 56February 25, 2019 2:17 PM

r54, I believe Elton (who co-produced the film) wanted Taron, who is a fine singer, the opportunity to interpret his songs his own way. Plus, based on the trailer, I have a feeling this movie is more of a traditional musical, where the songs are performed within the story, not just in the recording studio or on-stage, so the songs would have to have been re-recorded anyway.

Besides, Elton doesn't have the most extraordinary, immediately recognizable voice, the way Freddie Mercury does.

by Anonymousreply 57February 25, 2019 2:20 PM

Based on the trailer, it doesn't look the film has de-gayed Elton John. Also, Taron has said he and Richard Madden filmed a "hot" sex scene, though whether that makes the final cut remains to be seen.

by Anonymousreply 58February 25, 2019 2:21 PM

Elton didn’t want an openly gay man to play? Not even an unknown?

by Anonymousreply 59February 25, 2019 2:22 PM

R57, Are you on crack? Elton John doesn’t have an extraordinary or immediately recognizable voice?

by Anonymousreply 60February 25, 2019 2:22 PM

Sounds like it's already better than Bohemian Rhapsody

by Anonymousreply 61February 25, 2019 2:22 PM

So will we get another straight guy winning an Oscar for playing a gay rock star two years in a row?

by Anonymousreply 62February 25, 2019 2:23 PM

Maybe Taron will come out before the end of the year

by Anonymousreply 63February 25, 2019 2:24 PM

Rami was not hairy enough for Freddie, and Taron isn't hairy enouh for Reggie.

by Anonymousreply 64February 25, 2019 2:30 PM

r60, honestly, I don't. I suspect we recognize it simply because his songs are so much a part of the soundtrack of our lives. His talents was in the songwriting and the showmanship; I'm not saying he's a bad singer, he's a very fine singer, but he's not a singer noted for his vocal flourishes, the way Freddie Mercury or Frank Sinatra or Prince were. Having somebody else sing his songs is not criminal.

by Anonymousreply 65February 25, 2019 2:33 PM

Elton is unpleasant and let's be honest: his life is mostly boring. Dreary lower middle class upbringing of the kind nearly everyone had in post-war UK, with many events early in his career sort of happening around him instead of to him. His drug use reportedly turned him into a big whiny baby instead of an interesting hardcore kind of guy, so that's not particularly fruitful cinematic material either.

Much more interesting are the petty things he did to try to one-up David Bowie and other stars of the day, but I doubt they'll get into that.

R44, she's played by newcomer Celinde Schoenmaker, who hasn't been in anything else before.

The problem is that, unlike Freddie, Sir Elton is still among the living. And the touring.

Plus, his one major relationship with a woman wasn't a big part of this gay man's life, as Mary was to FM.

However, as I am a major fan of EJ and not one of FM, I will probably go to see this biopic, whereas I'm skipping "BR."

by Anonymousreply 69March 22, 2019 2:17 PM

How are they gonna make an Elton john movie accessible to breeders? Are they gonna take his wife he was married to for 2 seconds in he 80s and expand her role?

by Anonymousreply 70March 22, 2019 3:02 PM

As shown by tweet at r67, the studio is going to straight-wash it so it doesn't offend the breeder audiences.

by Anonymousreply 71March 22, 2019 3:06 PM

Elton John wished he looked like Taron at any time in his life.

Elton has always had a face for radio. If he hadn’t already been established by the time MTV came around no way would he have the huge career he’s had.

by Anonymousreply 72March 22, 2019 3:18 PM

Talented, cute... love him!

by Anonymousreply 73March 22, 2019 3:31 PM

Supposedly he had two major relationships with women, one lady he was engaged to in the 1960s, and Renata.

This looks like a light and fluffy biopic though so I'm not holding my breath for anything revealing.

Bummer about Sir Elton. I've met a handful of celebrities and most were pretty decent folks. Chief among them Jensen Ackles, who was an absolute sweetheart.

Back on topic: I honestly think Rocketman looks pretty good, and I don't even like musicals.
Rocketman, Paramount’s Elton John musical, is expected to be rated R and will include an intimate love scene between Taron Egerton, who plays the English singer, and Richard Madden, who plays John's former manager and lover, John Reid, two sources close to the film tell The Hollywood Reporter.

I guess the studio wanted to get rid of that scene to make the movie PG-13 so it would possibly be as successful as Bohemian Rhapsody.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 85March 23, 2019 8:54 PM

R85 Sounds like they're still in discussions, so that's good, I guess. I trust Hollywood Reporter more than I do Daily Mail.

The sex scene sounds pretty tame, though, for them to be making such a fuss over it. Maybe I'm just used to watching R rated movies more so than PG-13 ones.

by Anonymousreply 86March 23, 2019 8:59 PM

Yeah, it's still in the editing stage. This from director:
Seeing much speculation about ROCKETMAN!! That’s good! It’s still unfinished so it’s nothing but rumors. It has and always will be the no holds barred, musical fantasy that Paramount and producers passionately support and believe in. See for yourself May 24. Dx x

I'm glad people are speaking up while there's still time, although how much good did that do with BR when reports came out that it was straight-washed? I'm also hearing the R rating is because of the violence and the drug use in addition to the nudity, not just because of the nudity itself.

by Anonymousreply 87March 23, 2019 9:09 PM

There better be gay sex in the movie

by Anonymousreply 88March 23, 2019 9:15 PM

*Sorry, that should be [italic]swearing[/italic], not violence.

by Anonymousreply 89March 23, 2019 9:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 91March 23, 2019 9:28 PM

I went to IMDB, mostly to find out about the director's prior directing credits (which are scant). The most surprising thing (to me) is that Bryce Dallas Howard plays Elton's mother.

by Anonymousreply 92March 23, 2019 9:37 PM
I went to IMDB, mostly to find out about the director's prior directing credits (which are scant).

Dexter is primarily an actor. He completed Bohemian Rhapsody after Bryan Singer's firing and he's friends with director Matthew Vaughn who is "Rocketman"s producer, as well as producer of Fletcher's other film "Eddie the Eagle".

The studio is going for PG13 because it gives them a better chance at making money. There was a large audience of people under 18 who helped make "The Greatest Showman" rake in over 400 million at the box office. The film is going to be more fantastical than Bohemian Rhapsody, it's more like "Moulin Rouge" and "Across the Universe".

by Anonymousreply 93March 23, 2019 10:02 PM

Is this like Elton's 50th anniversary in showbiz or something? A movie, a book and he says he's semi-retiring (i.e. "farewell tour").

I'll never forgive him for pretending to be straight in the 80s, at the height of AIDS. Was he afraid of decreased record sales?

by Anonymousreply 94March 23, 2019 11:17 PM

R94 He was also all over Ryan White and respectable children with AIDS, but stayed the fuck away from icky gay men with AIDS

by Anonymousreply 95March 23, 2019 11:26 PM

I would have preferred that they titled the movie, "Hold Me Closer, Tony Danza," in honor of one of the most mangled and misheard lyric in pop history.

He rushed out a press release less than 24 hours after one of his bete noires, Neil Diamond, announced his retirement. Notably, Elton's retirement wasn't actually a retirement.

He's been pissy about Neil ever since Neil got him the first gig at the Troub, but lord knows why. He was jealous of everyone even if there was no reason for it.

by Anonymousreply 103March 26, 2019 2:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 105March 26, 2019 2:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 106March 26, 2019 2:58 PM

R106 here again I do hope Taron is gay, he can present hole to me anytime.

by Anonymousreply 120April 7, 2019 12:44 AM

If he does come out, he'll move the top of my First Openly Gay Actor to win an Oscar list. My current number one is the sad Ellen Page, followed closely by Sir Ian.

by Anonymousreply 121April 7, 2019 12:45 AM
There are rumors he's going to come out soon.

In his British GQ profile he talks about being straight and playing gay, how he was upset that people thought he was gay (after posting that a Male friend was cute) not because it's a bad thing but because people acted as if he's gay baiting, he talked about being proud that he and his girlfriend reconciled after a brief split. So if he's "going to come out soon" he has an odd way of going about it.
Jesus, they've been promoting the shit out of this thing and we're still two months away from the release date. They really need this to be a hit.

Elton has been promoting his biopic film since December last year. One of Britain's biggest department stores (John Lewis) makes hugely popular Christmas ads every year. Elton was the star of this year's ad - but instead of promoting John Lewis or its products, it was basically a promo for Elton's own "Rocketman" biopic movie. The ad showed a kaleidoscope of Elton's life through the decades, including an episode when his mom (apparently?) bought him a piano as a Xmas gift to foster his talent.

However, the department store John Lewis doesn't even sell pianos. So basically it wasn't a store ad, it was an early film promo.

Many Brits were confused and bemused by this.

Everyone I know presumes Taron is gay. Richard is walking around LA with his 25yo out and proud boyfriend. If they both officially come out, it'd be kind of a big deal and would likely garner a lot of press - two OUT gay/bi actors playing gay/bi roles in a major studio feature film isn't something that happens every day.

by Anonymousreply 138April 16, 2019 12:39 AM

I wonder Mr Egerton feels sheepish knowing the prime reason he was chosen for the role because he has such a wide face?

by Anonymousreply 139April 16, 2019 12:42 AM
I was in LA in 1970 when cokey creepy Elton was at ev hwood party, bein an ass hole.

R97, how was Elton "creepy"?

And, besides being firmly in the closet doing the AIDS epidemic, what else did Elton do to garner an 'asshole-ish' reputation?

by Anonymousreply 140April 16, 2019 12:42 AM

Elton deserves respect. Billboard recently anointed him the #1 Billboard Hot 100 Make Artist of all time! Surpassing Elvis. That matters as a statistic you can throw in the ignorant faces of the masses. Gay men matter... always have.

by Anonymousreply 141April 16, 2019 12:47 AM

What is a "make artist"? I still prefer Elvis. I only know 2 songs by Elton.

I doubt Elton’s biopic will reveal a new side to him or any new interesting information. I expect boring whitewashing. And Egerton’s voice is not as good as Elton’s - they should just use Elton’s early recordings.

I would rather watch a biopic about this convoluted quartet of lovers:

“The British Supreme Court ruled that people in England and Wales should not be able to read about the sexual exploits of Elton John’s Canadian husband David Furnish.

Furnish sought a publication BAN in January as the Sun on Sunday was about to publish details of Furnish’s sexual encounters, including a threesome...

Even though the injunction is not valid outside England and Wales, lawyers for John and Furnish tried to remove stories from the Web by filing Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) complaints. The DMCA, though, is intended to protect against infringement of copyright.

Ironically, the attempts by John and Furnish to infringe on press freedoms - which has reportedly cost them an estimated $2 million CAD - turned gossip that likely would have been ignored by mainstream media into a bigger story.”

England and Wales are basically the same thing. The whole country is 3 times smaller than the state of Texas.

by Anonymousreply 148April 16, 2019 3:40 AM

I'm going to hate him by the time the movie comes out.

"When I was 14 or 15, I had a period of thinking I might be gay and I spoke to my mother about it," Taron says as he poses for an exclusive shoot by Damon Baker in Attitude's June issue,

"It was part of a period in my life where my mind was figuring things out. You question everything, there are hormones... It was a very real feeling to me and I was very panicked and upset about how I would be perceived.

"That is not the same as going through it for real but there is some understanding of what it might be like, and I remember feeling that accutely.

He looks nothing like Elton (there does not even seem to be a “transformation” for the role), his face is distractingly square as Elton John, and his voice is much more masculine sounding and limited (and not even half as good as John’s).

I don’t want to see a musical with a subpar singer playing a great singer (even if John is a total asshole, I still love the music he and Bernie made together and I love young Elton’s melodic voice and range).

At least with Tom Hardy in it (Hardy also would have been very miscast but is a much better actor) it could have been a camp event!

by Anonymousreply 179May 4, 2019 3:19 AM

I'm not in the know, but I don't think there's much auto tuning -- if for no other reason that Taron doesn't sound all that great. He's not awful, but he's not fabulous, either. I'm willing to overlook that if he plays the part well, though. Given the choice between a mediocre actor who lip syncs his songs and a great actor who sings his own songs, I'll take the latter.

by Anonymousreply 180May 4, 2019 3:29 AM

Is George Michael next?

r182, I'll play him, and when I do interviews to promote the film I'll reiterate how straight I am

by Anonymousreply 183May 4, 2019 4:28 AM

R179, I would suspect it's not autotuned at all. Edgerton's got a good sense of pitch (see his performance live linked below - he has excellent pitch throughout, which actually isn't easy). He doesn't have a terribly strong voice, but it's got a pleasing tone and he's got a feel for phrasing.

r190 So explain to me why, if his words are not gaybaiting and he is in fact telling people he is gay... openly, why do he say he is hetero and has a girlfriend. He is gaybaiting and you, delusional dumb bitches, are falling for it. He has a movie with a gay central character and needs our money. Straight people doesn't care for an old gay diva, let alone are dying to watch some male actors kissing on screen.

A singer who was in the closet most of his career, bearded, and stayed closeted during the height of the AIDS epidemic while people were dying? A time when his voice may have helped bring some attention to their plight? This is who you’re referring to?

I knew him during his " drunk & drugs " years..He was a groper and would hang all over any young guy who didn't have the self respect to push him away. I also knew him during his now sober days. A dry drunk. Mean, spoiled, angry and a major creep. People have remarked that they prefer the using Elton over the sober Elton...at least drunk or drugged their was a possiblity of him passing out.

'Rocketman' Star Taron Egerton Moved to Tears During Standing Ovation at Cannes

The festival kicked into overdrive Thursday night with the Elton John biopic, which was directed by Dexter Fletcher. Rocketman took flight on Thursday night with a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, drawing an electric four-minute standing ovation for Paramount's $41 million biopic of Elton John, starring Taron Egerton as the music legend.

John, Egerton, director Dexter Fletcher and co-stars Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard were all in attendance at the special out-of-competition gala screening inside the Palais' Grand Theatre Lumiere. John produced the film with partner David Furnish, Matthew Vaughn, Adam Bohling and David Reid, and the whole team joined in for the festivities.

During the screening, the audience broke into spontaneous applause during the performances of "Your Song" and "I'm Still Standing." Following the showing, John and Egerton were moved to tears by the audience and embraced. In an impromptu move, Fletcher grabbed the microphone and thanked the crowd for their response, saying, “We’re absolutely blown away by your fantastic reception.”

The premiere marked a homecoming (of sorts) for John, who has an estate in nearby Nice, some 20 minutes from Cannes. He has spent time in the yellow summer home in a Belle Epoque villa surrounded by the parklands of Mont Boron since the 1990s. As for the film and festival debut, the singer-songwriter hasn't said much about his past coming to life on the big screen. He did, however, email The Hollywood Reporter about how it felt seeing footage of Egerton in his famous shoes. "I didn't think it was Taron. I thought it was me. That's the highest compliment I can tell you," John wrote

Well if the box office soars expectations, then Egerton can secure a spot. Globe nod seems locked at this point, a win is in close reach. In Rocketman's favor, the reviews are better than Bohemian Rhapsody so there isn't a "ugh" factor to it.

R179 there was a suggestion that George Martin’s son recorded Egerton then blended it together with elton’s voice. Saw Rocketman last night loved it. You can here the parts between Egerton singing and then the blended version when the songs take off and it works well.
