by Anonymousreply 173January 9, 2019 6:26 PM

She was walking down our hall as we came out the door to go to dinner. Her sister Lorna was playing in the hotel's Empire Room that night.

Steven Webber in the frozen foods aisle of Ralph's supermarket on Sunset Blvd. He opened the case where I was standing and smiled directly at me, and I remember being kind of flustered because a guy friend of his (?) (or a stalker?) was peeking around the corner and watching my reaction.

DL has since informed me SW is bi, and at least one person here's mentioned having a MMM threeway with him. I wonder if the pair were out trolling together for a third that afternoon?

by Anonymousreply 14January 1, 2019 11:28 PM

Not quite unexpected, but Our dog sniffed Owen and/or Luke Wilson's dogs butt in Santa Monica last week. They were with their mother and avoided eye contact (not that we were planning to say anything).. Alec baldwin was super chipper, much much friendlier and initiated convo with us when we crossed paths walking dogs in the village recently.

by Anonymousreply 15January 1, 2019 11:29 PM

Andy Cohen - on the platform of the Rock Center subway station.

On the streets of NYC - Mickey Mantel, Tommy Tune, Richard Lewis, Chelsea Clinton, Billy Bush in a kilt. It was St. Patrick’s Day. Curtis Stone and his then girlfriend now wife Lindsay Price, on another St. Patrick’s Day. He was talking to a group of young female fans and Lindsay looked annoyed. Stallone and Brigitte Nielsen when they were married. Brigitte was drop dead gorgeous. Lindsay Lohan’s father, who was standing on a line to get some free crap a company was handing out on 6th Avenue. Stephen King who was loudly trash talking about the Yankees.

by Anonymousreply 20January 2, 2019 12:41 AM

Steven Seagal with several hookers in the elevator of a Vancouver hotel.

Stole a cab from under Sarah Jessica Parker's nose in Greenwich Village.

Harrison Ford and Callista Flockhart walking together in West Village. At first I thought it was a homeless guy dragging a stick figure along.

Matthew Broderick peeing at a urinal right next to mine in a NYC restaurant. he just made this dejected face that said "please, don't ask me anything!"

by Anonymousreply 21January 2, 2019 12:47 AM

R21, did you get a peek at Ferris Bueller’s cock?

by Anonymousreply 22January 2, 2019 12:49 AM

Not really. He doesn't do anything for me so when I took a glance and saw who it was I didn't care to know that much to be escorted from a fancy restaurant as the perv who stares at celebrities' cocks.

by Anonymousreply 23January 2, 2019 12:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 26January 2, 2019 1:01 AM

I've bumped into a lot of celebs, as I am sure most people have, living in NYC - all the time.

But one weird one was when one time I was standing on a corner somewhere in the east 30s in Manhattan waiting to cross the street and standing there next to me waiting was Chaka Khan - short, big hair, big ass. That was cool in and of itself. But literally the following week I was in San Francisco visiting my mom and was standing on a corner somewhere in the city waiting to cross the street, and standing next to me was Chaka Khan. It was so absurd, it was almost comical.

by Anonymousreply 27January 2, 2019 1:01 AM

by Anonymousreply 28January 2, 2019 1:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 29January 2, 2019 1:20 AM

I met Melissa Joan Hart once in the Delta lounge in Atlanta! She was just chillin getting some oatmeal and I didn't realize who it was for a second, then I purposely went to sit somewhat near her, but not creepily close. I said something stupid like "it's freezing in here" and she replied nicely "I knowwww, I hate being cold in airports." Not a riveting conversation, but she was quite nice.

John Lithgow peed two urinals down from me Sunday at LAX. He sighed as he peed. I wonder if he has prostate problems.

Kiefer Sutherland stood at a blackjack table I was sitting at in Vegas. He played four $25 hands, lost each one, then walked away.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson and I got out of our cars, parked next to each other, at the same time at Papa Christo's on a Wednesday at lunch. We walked to the door next to each other. He held the door for her and me, and then we awkwardly negotiated who would be in line before the other. (I insisted they go first.)

At the Atlanta Airport, I saw star baritone Sherill Milnes around 2000. I was in my 20’s and he was no longer performing at the big opera houses at that point (he may have retired), so he was pretty surprised that I recognized him.

by Anonymousreply 37January 2, 2019 2:56 AM

I was at the Metropolitan Opera plaza fountain over a decade ago and Composer Phillip Glass walked up and stood next to me against the fountain’s edge. I was too shy to talk to him. Turns out he was in rehearsals for his opera at the MET about Christopher Columbus

James Hong on a flight from SEA to LAX. And LAX is a spotters dream. Captain Kangaroo (when I was like 7), Josh Malina, and two of the main characters from Grimm (Sgt. Wu and Captain Renard).

Strangest encounter? The baseball pitcher Bill 'Spaceman' Lee in a bar in Boston long after he had retired.

by Anonymousreply 47January 2, 2019 10:20 PM

I’m here to do penance for spelling her name wrong.

BTW - seeing celebrities in NY, LA or Vegas isn’t exactly unexpected guys.

I started the thread because I was surprised to run into La Chenoweth in Cedar Rapids.

And, of course, to misspell both her names.

Richard Gere outiside a bar one night in Seattle.

Clint Eastwood and Sondra Locke in Idaho skiing,

Judd Nelson sat behind me at a Sonics game in Seattle. Same game, Harry Connick Jr. was finishing a coke or something in small bar at a table next to mine and he tried to get some ice out of his drink. The ice went down the front of his shirt. He tried to remain cool, but it was funny.

Harry Anderson was having a drink in a local Mexican joint in Issaquah, Wash. I was with coworkers for happy hour.

Edgar Martinez, Rob Estes, Cynthia Geary and Elaine Miles (both from Northern Exposure) came into my work,

OP, this thread has really just turned into people bragging about meeting celebrities anywhere, not just in unexpected places. I wish people could post within the confine of the rules OP sets.

by Anonymousreply 56January 3, 2019 5:19 PM

Unless you’re seeing them perform, it’s always unexpected to see them.

by Anonymousreply 57January 3, 2019 5:48 PM

I would expect to run into celebs at hotels and airports, as they travel for their jobs. I wouldn't expect to sit across from Linda Evans at a tire place in Reseda.

by Anonymousreply 58January 4, 2019 5:54 AM

I know, R56 - I’ve run into many celebrities in non-surprising places: politicians on airplanes to DC, actors outside a Broadway theater, etc.

But I posted about KC (I dare not spell her name) but i was surprised to see her in Cedar Rapids

by Anonymousreply 59January 4, 2019 1:51 PM

Queen Latifah (dressed in a romper suit, running late for AA #1) exiting the Admirals Club at JFK eating what looked like Chinese food in a takeout container. Which seemed odd at 7:40 in the morning.

Jason Robards taking a leak next to me in a men's room at Lincoln Center.

Ann Miller, who was lovely and had a glass of champagne with us in the lobby during the try-outs for "My One and Only" with Twiggy and Tommy Tune.

Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon - years ago, obviously - coked out and screaming at each other in and going out of Musso and Frank in Los Angeles.

Mike Dukakis in the barbershop. Shitty tipper: 50 cents for a haircut.

Donatella Versace at some overpriced restaurant in Woolloomooloo. Bitch has a mouth on her that matches her face: it's not pretty.

Audra MacDonald waiting in line to order at a Chipotle Grill.

Malia Obama in Harvard Square (the SS must like her: really good security w/o being obtrusive although I'm guessing there are sharpshooters on the roofs)

by Anonymousreply 60January 4, 2019 2:19 PM

Vienna in the 80ies. A tiny figure in a furcoat and furhat flanked by two bodyguard-ish guys. You just saw fur and a nose. An unmistakable nose... Barbra

by Anonymousreply 61January 4, 2019 2:29 PM

Shaq O'Neill in an elevator In Indianapolis: the biggest feet I ever saw. Robert Redford at a urinal off-Broadway: surprisingly short. Ditto Paul Newman on 45th in Manhattan. Marlo Thomas and Phil after theater in Orso. Cher at A Chorus Line. Al Franken at a urinal in Minneapolis airport (hung, if anyone cares.) Harry Belafonte on a flight to EWR: handsome and gracious. Freddy Mercury at a gay bar NYC. Ditto Harvey Fierstein (shocking, huh?)

by Anonymousreply 62January 4, 2019 2:46 PM

Oh, and Barry Manilow and Gregory Hines at Gold's in Palm Springs: Barry is truly ugly. Hines denied it, but seemed gay.

by Anonymousreply 63January 4, 2019 2:53 PM

Roy Scheider in the hot tub at the Sunset Marquis. He asked to borrow a section of my NY Times.

Same hotel, different stay, by the pool at about 7 am: Peter Allen making out with (presumably) last night's trick at the other end of the pool apron. The Latina waitress saw me looking at the two of them as she poured my coffee and said, "He's a peeg."

by Anonymousreply 64January 4, 2019 3:22 PM

Greta Garbo, 6:00 a.m. w. 23rd St. NYC. and therein lies a tale. It was 1978 and I had been up for two days (in drag), speeding my brains out with Jackie Curtis. J.C. and I were out cruising in high heels for men/speed. As we were crossing the street a hag passed us going in the opposite direction. Jackie froze on the spot and said, "ohgodgarbo!" We turned on our heels and went after her. That Garbo was one fast walker. I remember J.C. had snatched a moldy flower off a bush by the time we caught up with her. He put himself in front of her did a quick curtsy, extended the beat-up flower to her and said "Mz. Garbo. " To which she said "Yes, daahlink. But vat happened to you?" End of story.

by Anonymousreply 65January 4, 2019 4:36 PM

This isn't my story but I thought it was cute and random enough to pass on. A good friend of mine was in Minneapolis for work and was at a restaurant one evening. Katie Couric was at one of the tables near her. My friend was a smoker at the time and stepped outside to smoke. Couric walked out with her team of people while my friend was outside and they looked confused as to where to go, so my friend directed them. Couric thanked her and my friend apologized for the cigarette smoke blowing around. Couric was very kind and non-judgmental, but she did tell her she was doing research for a cancer segment and that she hoped she would /could quit. I always thought that was a sweet story.

by Anonymousreply 66January 4, 2019 5:16 PM

Whoopi Goldberg at Six Flags over Georgia. It would have been around 1989-1990.

by Anonymousreply 67January 4, 2019 5:35 PM

I dont know if it was unexpected but the first day I moved to LA ( a long time ago) and was staying at a hotel, the sportmans lodge in studio city,...........I saw Pat Boone making a commercial by the pool..........another time I was coming down an elevator after visiting my orthodontist on roxbury dr in BH in a medical building and one of the female stars of the old laugh in tv series came onto the elevator. Her face was very swollen after what I guessed was a dental procedure. Visiting Carmel I was in a restaurant and saw both Doris Day and Clint Eastwood. Those are the ones coming to mind....oh I saw Arnold Swartz a few times as I use to hike at will rogers park and at that time he lived adjacent. I also saw Nicole Brown Simpson at the Brentwood gardens shopping mall on san vicente in Brentwood maybe a year before she died. WHen she came into the store I was in I overheard a clerk say...........be nice to that lady, she is the ex wife of OJ Simpson.

Seann William Scott at an amusement park in early OOs. Super, super nice to us and was happy to be recognized. AMERICAN PIE had just come out. Shorter than I expected, and not "fratty" at all...dressed really strangely and yeah, kind of pinged.

by Anonymousreply 71January 5, 2019 11:28 AM

R67: Whoopi Goldberg being walked through Antoine's in NOLA being introduced to diners during a National Association of Broadcasters convention. It must have been 1999 - 2001 because I remember flying down on TWA with a stop at LaGuardia. Roger Ailes, then head of Fox News, got on and sat across the aisle from us. Friends told me later they knew it would have been a big sacrifice for me but that I should have taken the plane down - "Think of all the crap you would have saved us from. You'd be a national hero." Great friends, I know.

Whoopi just looked so stoned and seemed incapable of speech beyond saying "Hello." The couple who owned the place were practically holding her up as they sort of frog-marched her from table to table.

by Anonymousreply 72January 5, 2019 3:16 PM

I was flying from San Diego to Boston but had to make a connection in Newark, NJ and then continue onto Boston. The flight from Newark to Boston was on one of those small commuter airplanes (some call them puddle jumpers). Nick Jonas was on the Newark-Boston flight. He sat near me. Didn't say anything. I think he was like the rest of us on the flight just wanting to get where we were going. I looked at him once after landing at Boston's Logan Airport, but he seemed just as confused as anyone wondering where he was supposed to go to exit the terminal.

by Anonymousreply 79January 5, 2019 11:27 PM

Jackie O in the elevator of the Park Av bldg where Doubleday used to be located. The elevator was going down, and as it filled up, she was in the back. The elevator was packed, and everyone turned around and stared at her on the ride down. She acted as if nothing were occurring.

Robert Reed in a bodega. He must have been heading off to the matinee performance of a B’way show he was doing.

I would love to have hooked up with Steven Weber, he’s cute.

by Anonymousreply 80January 5, 2019 11:45 PM

Has anyone ever run into Michael Strahan? He's my celebrity crush 😍

by Anonymousreply 81January 5, 2019 11:48 PM

I rode the elevator with Jackie O dozens of times. After the first couple, if we were alone, I looked in her eyes briefly, said "Hello" and then didn't stare. She said Hello. If there were other people, I said nothing. Poor Jackie, I guess. She was one of those people who, at a big party, everyone knew where she was at every single moment. Warhol was another.

by Anonymousreply 82January 5, 2019 11:51 PM

Ethan Hawke on the streets of Bucharest, Romania, where his mother lives. At that time Bucharest was very poor, shabby and sinister -- he looked a little uncomfortable but trying to be a good sport.

by Anonymousreply 83January 6, 2019 12:01 AM

Why does Leslie Carol Greene live in Bucharest?

by Anonymousreply 84January 6, 2019 12:14 AM

Steven Weber - W Hotel at 54th & Lexington, in the elevator (twice). He smiled and said hello both times.

Donna Summer - in the Admiral’s Club at Nashville Airport. She was alone, talked to me for about 5 minutes.

Bruce Jenner - AA flight from DFW to LAX. He paced up and down both aisles in FC and seemed to want attention.

Cindy Williams - in the Admiral’s Club at LAX. She wasn’t very relaxed, and had an entourage.

by Anonymousreply 85January 6, 2019 12:36 AM

George Hamilton walking alone on the beach in Santa Monica, at 1:00am. I was there photographing lightning in the distance. I got the feeling he was there for other reasons.

by Anonymousreply 86January 6, 2019 12:46 AM

Sandra Lee. Not that she's a huge star, but I love her. I was in the elevator at Bergdorf Goodman and she was going up to get her hair done. This was just after the most recent Governor election here in NYC. I said, "Congratulations, btw" because her beau had just won. She said thank you and then "Actually, congratulations to us all, if you know what I mean."

by Anonymousreply 87January 6, 2019 1:09 AM

Ethan Hawke's mother at that time was head of a social services agency that tried to help gypsies and poor people in Romania, of which there are many. Spotted her a few times, a striking, handsome woman like a friendlier-looking Lauren Bacall.

by Anonymousreply 88January 6, 2019 1:20 AM

How was that unexpected, R76?

by Anonymousreply 89January 6, 2019 1:20 AM

Chuck Barris (Gong Show!) in the revolving doors of the Plaza Hotel back in the 70's.

Lauren Bacall literally steamrolled over me as she exited MOMA making a beeline to her waiting car. 1970's.

by Anonymousreply 90January 6, 2019 1:37 AM

R90, do you know what the word “literally” means?

Carrot Top, men's room level 3, Water Tower Place, Chicago, circa 1994. There were no barriers between the urinals at that time.

by Anonymousreply 93January 6, 2019 2:05 AM

There were two times I've seen celebrities in Princeton, NJ. One was Fran Lebowitz, in a small grocery store... and the other time, I was taking a walk, then heard a very distinctive, recognizable voice... it was Dr. Ruth Westheimer, speaking to a student. I walked past them, and turned to say, "Hello.. nice to meet you.". Dr. Ruth was very nice and said, "very nice day."... then, I continued my walk. These sightings were in the early aughts. Another time, back in the 80's, I was in NYC and saw Ed Begley Jr. walking past me.

1) I ran into Marcia Wallace as we were both meandering through the spectacular Museum of Natural History in Victoria, British Columbia. We were both very impressed with the museum.

2) While reaching into my pocket for something at LAX, I accidentally elbowed veteran character actress Kathleen Freeman in the left tit–and SHE apologized to ME!

3) Years ago, a friend of mine and I were looking at the footprints outside of Grauman's Chinese Theater. As we were marveling at how tiny Mickey Rooney's footprints were, I looked up and there was Mickey Rooney, who didn't seem pleased with what we had been saying. He didn't say anything, but he certainly did glare. (But he DID have tiny feet).

4) While shopping at a supermarket somewhere in Connecticut while on vacation, I noticed that a couple of shoppers ahead of me were sharing right past me, so I turned around to see what was so interesting. It was Richard Dreyfuss. He's much shorter than I'd thought.

Marlo Thomas (years ago) at an appearance at Carson Pirie Scott department store on State Street in Chicago. She was promoting some sewing patterns for McCalls (see one linked below).

She was late in arriving and they kept making excuses.

When she arrived, she explained that she was late because she had been doing "The Phil Donahue Show" and what a nice guy he was, and did we all know about him, etc. And on and on about Phil. (It was apparently the day she met him.)

She answered questions, but got perturbed when more than one person asked her about "Donald".

Flying from Boston to DC on USAir years ago. In first class, aisle seat, as I used to fly this damn shuttle all the time and got upgraded a lot. I'm frantically working on my idiotic 200+ slide presentation deck. Guy whispers "do you want to change seats?" I say "no" and ignore him. He sits in the window seat and the flight attendants are hovering over him which is frankly annoying as they're just a distraction. I work through the short flight. He whispers "Is it okay if I get out before you?" I tell him sure. I only notice he's wearing a hell of a nice suit. I mean it's like a $10K bespoke suit.

The flight attendants are all over the guy and it's really creepy-stalkery. I throw the laptop in the bag and get off the plane. I'm waiting for my team. They're grinning and ask me about the flight. I'm confused and ask what they're talking about "You were sitting next to Ben Affleck"

Jonathan Price walking down Broadway on the Upper West Side in NYC 1997. Weirdly it turned out to be the night Princess Diana died. Katherine Hepburn stood outside a brownstone on the Upper Eat Side in the early nineties. She gave me a withering look so I averted my eyes and walked on, lol. JFK Jr stood outside ABC Carpet in NYC in the early nineties, I did a double take for the hotness before realizing who it was. Tyne Daly getting her kid an ice cream in Central Park in the early nineties. Seemed very nice and normal, reminding the kid to say thank you to the ice cream seller.

R121: Likewise oblivious if not for the whole flight. I used to fly on TWA all the time and they needed the business: in the 90's I got upgraded on about 90% of my flights. One night in 1995 or '96 flying F from St. Louis to Boston the FA's were fawning over the man across the aisle. Like you, I had work to do and so didn't pay much attention. Until the FA's were asking "Mr. Bailey" how he wanted his steak cooked, what he wanted to drink, if he was comfortable" and so on but because two of 'em were chatting him up in the aisle, I couldn't see who it was and didn't care. In First, they know your name so I figured WTF?

I kept working and the flight attendants kept it up through the service with "Mr. Bailey this" and "Mr. Bailey that" so much so that some of the other passengers who'd figured out who it was joined in, but sounding a lot less awe-struck than the cabin crew: "Still think OJ is a good dad, Mr. Bailey?" "Happy you helped that bastard get away with it, Mr. Bailey?" "If I was as guilty as OJ was, I'd hire you, too, Mr. Bailey" and so on.

All things considered, F. Lee Bailey took it with pretty good grace. I guess he knew he was outnumbered that night.

While on a business trip, I met Chrsitine Baranski while attending a concert at Carnegiie Hall. She was sitting near me, and we chatted at the end of the concert and in the lobby for a couple of minutes. It topped off a wonderful evening. She used the used "sublime" to describe the concert. I would say meeting Baranski was also sublime. I complemented her on her work on The Good Wife, which was on the air at the time. Delightful, charming and a gracious woman.

It's nice to hear a good story about Christine Baranski. I've heard others say she's cold as ice.

Renee Zellwegger was in line next to me at a deli in Mississippi while she was filming that movie with Greg Kinnear and I was visiting my parents. Lovely lady. This was immediately after the plastic surgery controversy and I thought she looked great in person. It must have settled by then, because she looked very much like herself. Woody and Mia, UWS, back in the mid-'80s. She looked wasted, haggard, with that limp and long blond hair, wearing some shapeless long summer skirt that could have dragging on the sidewalk, it was so long. He was short of course, as ugly as he looks in pics, what hair he had was all frizzled looking, a reddish tinge to it. I stared at him as I passed and he stared right back. I turned around to get one last glimpse of them--and he had turned around, too, like daring me to say his name. Creepy couple even then.

Tina Louise sometime in the '90s (at a salon getting her long red hair blow dried). She looked skeletal, pinched face--- and was being rude to the stylist straightening her hair. She acted like some diva bitch who was A list, rather than some 2nd rate creature from a dumb '60s sitcom.

I have only posted this on DL once before for fear of being totally crucified. But it happened and you guys can take it or leave it. When I started out on Wall Street, our form had a deal with the old Downtown Athletic Club over on the very end of the west side highway. It used to be very nice. Ten floors of weights, tracks, pools, boxing rings, everything. Plus restaurant and bar. An old "men's club" vibe. It is now condos. Anyway, JFK Jr used to work out there when he was intern at DAs office. I went to Brown (after him) and used to wear a Brown tee shirt to lift in. A few times in weight room, he gave a head nod/hello. I was low key and just did the same. A few weeks later, he was standing in open showers buck naked. He said "didnyou go to Brown?" We had a nice conversation showering. Nothing more. But to answer questions, he had a great build and he was hung very nicely.

It was more than just nudging, I got her pretty good. I turned around to see what I'd done and Ms. Freeman apologized to me for "getting too close." I of course recognized her instantly and made some stupid remark about forgetting I wasn't on a basketball court. Neither of us were seriously injured. Alas, it didn't occur to me to not wash my elbow until you brought it up. I guess it's too late now. The mishap occurred some 20 or so years ago, but every time I see her in an old movie or TV show, I fondly remember the time I whacked her in the tit at the LA Airport.

Oh! Oh! This reminds me I have an encounter to add to the thread: I was in a shoe store at the Beverly Center in (West?) Hollywood and my friend pointed out Tina Louise was sitting on the customer bench alongside us. I complimented her and she was very nice.

I kind of go into a trance and start burbling around celebs (or just freeze up entirely), and I'm sorry to say I took out my drag business card -- which had a nice pic of me on it as a glamorous redhead --and said something like, "I even chose red hair because of you!"

Even that didn't phase her. I think she said, "Well, that's very nice."

In the late '70s, I saw the musical "On the Twentieth Century" starring Madeline Kahn and John Callum during its pre-Broadway tryout at the Colonial Theatre in Boston. I just had to meet Madeline, but didn't know how I would. But I did! Later that evening, both Madeline and John were walking through Boston Common heading back to the Ritz where they were staying. I recognized them of course. I had my Playbill. I walked up to them and said I has just seen the show. Both were very friendly and chatty. I asked if they would sign my Playbill, which they did.
