Were you here when people were convinced two of the actors from Lord of the Rings were in a secret relationship?

Have you ever Googled "Larry Stylinson" the portmanteau for the conspiracy theory that two boy banders from One Direction are dating?

It is the EXACT SAME conspiracy theory as Prancing PONIES. EXACT. The idea that two actors are kept from revealing their love by evil Management.

It is a lot like QAnon too.

The Lotr stuff was a lot like that.

I was here. I recall thinking those people were nuts but I had no framework for believing or disbelieving it at the time.

It seemed conceivable to me that Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood could be dating. And I guess that it seemed possible they were asked to keep it quiet by the studio. Sending absurd "signals" to the public of their forbidden love didn't make much sense though. Nor the idea of "insiders" posting about it on Datalounge

Also is this blocked? Can you see the text of these posts? There was a time long ago when all posts about these conspiracy theories' main protagonists were blocked by keyword.

some fat straight chick was the head pony

Where there’s gay smoke there’s usually fire. It’s not crazy to think that closeted actors or musicians are secretly fucking. I’m sure that happens all the time.

by Anonymousreply 5January 1, 2019 3:15 PM

It wasn't just here that it was happening. There was quite a bit of it on IMDB as well, but I never heard that the guys were sending certain coded signals to the public. That's a bit too "Paul is dead" crazy when people start seeing conspiracy patterns that aren't there.

by Anonymousreply 6January 1, 2019 3:18 PM

Well Elijah wood is gay and as far as I know not even hiding it though not fully out of the closet.

by Anonymousreply 7January 1, 2019 3:24 PM

How is this OP not from 2013?

by Anonymousreply 8January 1, 2019 3:24 PM

Yeah, but more for the tail end of it. I just ignored it, because I didn't understand the obsession with these actors. I do like that you can put threads on ignore now, because it does get on my nerves when I keep seeing the same thread titles over and over.

It frightens me that I could be so stupid as to fall for such a conspiracy.

Not that I CARED or anything, but that I found it plausible that random actors from Lord of the Rings were sending secret signals.

Remember a random person would post something like "Coffee and cream / is not what it seems" here on Datalounge and people would find out they attended a premiere somewhere and one would have some form of white on and one some form of tan / brown so it looked like "an insider" was posting.

Unhinged.

I wasn't here for it but I followed it on the journalfen.net account (now defunct). It was the template for so many crazy fan conspiracies.

There have been other instances of The Evil Suits Are Forcing My Idols To Keep THeir Love A Secret, even some straight version. There used to be people who swore that the two leads on "The X-Files" were madly in love, and the studio was forcing them to keep quiet about it.

The common thread in these batshit delusions is the belief that the stars desperately need the support of the fans who are in the know, if they're ever going to experience personal happiness.

Which serves two purposes for the delusional fan - it puts them one up on all their fellow fans, and it feeds the belief that the star needs the fan as much as the fan needs the star. The fans who believe this nonsense want to do the star the kind of big personal favor that can't be ignored, and in return they expect the star to be grateful and make them the biggest of the big name fans.

Elijah Wood looks especially cute here, as he is speaking of LOTR.
