2020 U.S. Primaries and Caucuses (a discussion/therapy community)

Elizabeth Warren is . . . First!

I think she's there to draw fire.

Just as a sanity reminder, please note the Iowa caucus is Feb 3rd.

by Anonymousreply 1December 31, 2018 7:20 PM

Feb 3rd 2020, in case that is not clear.

by Anonymousreply 2December 31, 2018 7:22 PM

OP you may be right, but either way I’m thankful we will have a veritable cornucopia of potential candidates. That is good for America.

by Anonymousreply 3December 31, 2018 7:51 PM

Liz makes my skin crawl.

by Anonymousreply 4December 31, 2018 9:18 PM

We're going to be fielding a field of nearly 20 viable, intelligent, adult candidates. Even with the infighting that will occur, they will all serve to make Trump look even worse in comparison every single day for the next two years.

Now, what we need to watch out for is the media. What will they decide to do? Will they go after Democrats and lay off of Trump because he's their cash cow? We need to be ready to call them out on it every single time over and over and over.

by Anonymousreply 7December 31, 2018 11:00 PM

Elizabeth Warren is a non starter.

Pocohantas. Enough said.

by Anonymousreply 8January 1, 2019 12:06 AM

Oh look, Trump's here.

by Anonymousreply 9January 1, 2019 1:35 AM

Fuck off R8

I don't expect the first two stops to be friendly to females or Western candidates. The peak North Eastern states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont) are actually hostile states for women. A non-Western white man is likely to win the first two stops: Iowa and New Hampshire. This is why Tim Ryan is one of the clear frontrunners.

[bold]However[/bold], this primary will be unlike any other one because 3 big Western states (including the top two point getters) hold primaries right after.

[bold]Texas, Nevada, and California will start early voting at the same time as Iowa and New Hampshire[/bold] which cuts the monopoly that these two small states have on the entire election, and most importantly, [bold]it will prevent the Bernbros from antagonizing another Democratic primary[/bold] because the power balance tilts towards the states that voted against Bernie and are more likely to vote for a female or Western candidate: Nevada (3rd)South Carolina (4th), Virginia(5),Texas(5th), California(5th).

I don't think people understand how important it is that Texas and California are having their primaries early in the schedule. It balances the playing field and allows South Carolina and Virginia to become more important than "Broland" New Hampshire.

I’ve said this before—the person who is going to win the presidency in 2020 should not run on being charismatic . In fact they should market themselves as anti-charisma. We need someone who is anti-Dump. Someone who will tell Americans that they’re calm and collected, and the opposite of Dump.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana. Mark my words. Renaissance man, Rhodes Scholar, Afghanistan vet, gay married with children, Indiana loves him.

It's going to be Beto. He'll get most of the youth vote, the men's vote, and I predict most of the women's vote. I think Democratic women voters will be reluctant to nominate another woman to take on Trump. There's just too much at stake to take a gamble like that again.

I'm interested to see if Kamala can connect with Southern black voters. For her to win, she has to win CA, NY and sweep in the South. I'm not sure she can do that. She's not folksy enough for the South, and I think Beto will do as well among black men as Kamala.

by Anonymousreply 16January 6, 2019 3:24 AM

I see your point, r12, but there are many ways the Dems can (and have already started to) project the image of maturity and competence in governing -- the nominee doesn't have to do that all alone (and we hope s/he has cottails!). We do not need a Michael Dukakis (as fine a man as he was) this time around, the stakes are too high. Also let's not assume we will be running against Trump.

by Anonymousreply 17January 6, 2019 3:37 AM

Just remember New Hampshire has voted for the Democrat in the last 4 elections. Hillary won by about 2700 votes. Skip the primary and you might not win the state.

[quote] It's going to be Beto. He'll get most of the youth vote, the men's vote, and I predict most of the women's vote.

I also think he will get the Black Vote. His defense of Colin Kaepernick and why he defended him was brave and brilliant. Did any other Dem. nominees-- especially Bernie of Biden--- defend Colin publicly?

And, yes, Boris, charisma counts. Example - Trump. The collective apathetic mass do not read policies or don't have time to.
