Should Julia Roberts go back to her big hair to stand out visually, again?

Although there's always the tale of women struggling for roles in Hollywood after moving out of their ingenue period, I can't help but wonder if the reason such a popular actress like Roberts's star started fading just as her started getting flatter and flatter.

I've always felt that the public is actually pretty forgiving of aging, so long as someone ages behind how the public first cemented the image of a star in viewer's minds, never veering too much in colors and textures from what people expect. Sandra Bullock never moved too far away from her original look nor did Gwyneth Paltrow and they've pretty seamlessly moved into more mature roles.

Julia was a mega-star and still carries prestige tied to that distinction but her hair was always a "thing"; "Mystic Pizza", "Pretty Women", "Steel Magnolias", later "My Best Friend's Wedding", the big hair was kept even into the slightly off looking, blonder period of "The Pelican Brief" and "Sleeping with The Enemy".

Should Julia go back to the big hair?

I remember when PRETTY WOMAN hit big.

I was bored by it, but I worked with dozens of 20-something girls who suddenly all wanted Julia hair (and the honest love of a billionaire).

Molly Ringwald has already made bright red hair a thing for them, but the length, the volume, the curls, the sexiness of Julia's hair was kind of a revolution.

I remember a conversation with one: she couldn't understand if Julia had permed her hair, had it straightened, then permed again between different scenes of PRETTY WOMAN. (No rocket scientist, she.)

I responded that I thought Julia had naturally curly (and red) hair, which she sometimes blew-dry straight, sometimes wore naturally curly, and sometimes set in hot rollers for extra tight curls. Stylists, etc.

My colleague was astonished. I suddenly, unwittingly became the Gay Oracle of Delphi of All Things Julia Roberts at my job because of that conversation.

Thank you, Julia. I think.

I love that story, R3. You're probably still a legend to them.

Let’s try this again.

Unfortunately, JR hasn’t much hair left. She now wears wigs. I’m not sure if JR had chemo, or what happened, but her hair is gone.

I don’t even know if that was all her hair to begin with. I’m guessing she used micro hair extensions back then for fullness. That too, would explain why she now wears wigs.

Thanks, R4. You're sweet, but I'm sure all those gals have moved on to other gayer Gay Oracles.

Seriously, I sort of like JR as she gets older: she seems less concerned about being a Star than about an occasional opportunity to be an Actor.

That said:

She needs to stop the blonde thing, now and forever. It's not her and never was. I hate it.

She really needs to stop straightening! I loved her dense curls. Can't she find a flattering, shorter (but not SHORT) face-framing style?

Lastly, she looks like she needs a good meal or two. As the fabulous Deneuve famously said: in middle age, you can save your face or your ass, but you can't save both.

And I think (in middle age) most people are more interested in your face.

Mariah went back to her curls a few years ago and looked better than ever!

Bone straight hair tends to be a little unforgiving...
