Gays, do we like Gwen Stefani?
She’s someone you don’t see many speak of these days.
I personally liked No Doubt, but loved her debut solo album. I thought she was so fun and unique. Her song “Cool” is still one of my favorite songs cause I relate to it so much. I get feels when I hear it lol. Someone specific pops in my head.

Song is just.. okay. I did love NO DOUBT back in the day. They made wonderfully catchy (but ultimately disposable) pop that felt so of-the-moment.
The visuals in OP's song are actually better than the song itself: Gwen looks younger and more innocent as a brunette in the flashbacks. She really might want to rethink the platinum blonde thing if she wants to stay fresh and/or current.

The problem with Gwen is she went from being cool with the first No Doubt album to being a new Gloria Estefan. From hosting TV specials to hacking shit on QVC to recording anything that someone tells her might score her a hit, she's just not credible anymore. Worse, though, it's been so long since she offered up any good music.

It’s too bad that No Doubt (or was it the record company?) freaked out and changed their sound after the relative failure of Return to Saturn. I just saw a clip of her a couple days ago and she looked like she used to, for the first time in a long time. Some of her makeup and style choices are part of the problem, like when she does the Ariana Grande ponytail and eyebrows. She had such an iconic look during "Don't Speak"...it was so evocative of everything 90s pop was. Agree that her voice is grating. It's affected. She deliberately sings with a closed throat to sound more "cutesy" and cupie-doll. It's too bad, because when you hear her natural tone, it sounds good.

I feel solo Gwen was the sweet spot between P!nk & Katy Perry; she invented Perry’s lipglossed camp first but presented it with a snarl of P!nk’s tough party-hardy bravado to make it less annoying & cutesy.
I’m not sure looking back if Stefani was ever straight-ahead cool without No Doubt, but she was a short blast of surly fun pop-madness. I can still remember every line of ‘Hollaback’ and see its creativity as an anthem while admitting it is totally vapid.
Contemporaneously it was women like Ciara who made the cooler pop music.

I’ve always seen her as a pop star whose talent is image and once was trendiness. She doesn’t have a very high-quality voice but her early ska was different and her Hollaback thing was different. I am really surprised she has managed to stay in the public eye beyond age 35 and I give her credit for doing so without resorting to any manufactured crash-and-burn/great comeback events as so many do. And overall I like her positive and grateful persona. I don’t see any real reason to dislike the woman. I never liked her music very much but I think she is fine for the space she holds in pop culture.

[quote] “Take a chance, you stupid ho” I don’t understand the love for “What You Waiting For.” The lyrics, like all of her song lyrics, are so embarrassingly bad.
Then R76, you weren’t a young woman in the ‘90s/00s. That’s who that song is for and who it speaks to, same as ‘Hollaback’ & ‘Rich Girl’ and the rest of L.A.M.B. I also posit you perhaps don’t get what Stefani was ever trying to do and get across, but that’s ok if it wasn’t for your ears anyway. It’s about finding a way to cope with the society Madonna described in ‘Material Girl’, when moxie and a sick beat (sorry, Swifty) is all you have at your disposal. Western girls became more outspoken and competitive as well as more visible in typically aggressive male-led artist genre around this time thanks to crossover popstars like GS. I mean “this my shit, this my shit” isn’t something you’d ever have heard Britney or Madge say at that time. No one is saying some of her stuff isn’t dumb or pop fluff, but it isn’t as empty as you’re making out.
As for “stupid Ho”: a) it isn’t directly offensive to her listeners as she’s addressing herself in the lyric, psyching herself up & out of a funk by way of strong language; b) it’s confronting a sexist & hypersexed industry by throwing its own crass terminology right back; c) it’s a reference to TLC’s ‘Silly Ho’ which should be obvious to anyone who knows female-driven pop music beyond Madonna. GS has never been about lyrics anyway, she exists to sound off and show an attitude/strut.
If anything she did in her solo career was a bad stupid (hah) misstep it was that whole voiceless/nameless Japanese backup dancers thing, but she was even well-intentioned with that as she did have a cohesive concept in mind when using it plus a real admiration for Harajuku style before the Western mainstream choked the life out of it. She also sincerely wanted to give those dancers career exposure and a payday, it just came over wrong.
tl;dr ‘WYWF?’ actually a banger if you’re a girl but maybe you had to be there. Also the whole L.A.M.B is killer and no one should apologise for liking it (even the visual).

There was a blind item that suggested Gwen was really pro-life but kept it hidden so she wouldn't lose her (presumably) pro choice majority fan base of young female admirers.
I believe she had said something politically pro-life at a concert & was booed (like Donna Summer before her with "the gays") & her handlers/marketing told her it was a losing cause for her to speak out about. Her reason was she supported the church doctrine on this issue. It made me wonder if Gwen secretly supports church doctrine on LGBT issues as well. There was also another blind item that she secretly donated money from one of her products to a pro-life group.

Madonna was never my cup of tea. I thought some of her videos were beautiful -- but her music never really did shit for me. Of the two, I felt Gwen was definitely more aware of her vocal limitations. A friend who met her at a party also said she was extraordinarily nice. I don't know anyone who has met Madonna - or know of anyone who says she is particularly nice.
As a lesbian I definitely felt like athletic Gwen made music for me more than Madonna. Her music was always actually GOOD for cardio.

FUN FACT II: I went to junior high with Stacey Swain, who later became Stacey Q, of "Two of Hearts' fame. I know!!! Ball Junior High School, Anaheim, CA. Two years ahead me grade-wise. I don't think her stupid relationship or the end of it is going to have any effect on her popularity. She is a singer who made fun videos a couple of decades ago. She could come back on a wave of nostalgia for her old persona if someone revisited her old stuff I guess. She could put out new music that we like. But she isn't Jennifer Anniston who can apparently keep getting job after job based on how tabloids portray her failed romantic life.
Stefani's fame and popularity are 100% linked to the appeal of her music. And right now faux ska isn't even retro-hip.

She tried to reignite her stalled solo career by reuniting with No Doubt and no one cared. So she changed up her sound and released another solo record and no one cared. So she released a Christmas record and no one cared.

I can't fucking STAND her!
No Doubt was great but that was only because of Gwen's brother, Eric. Eric Stefani wrote Tragic Kingdom, their breakthrough album, and then left the band to go be an animator on the Simpsons JUST before they hit it big outside of Orange County.
Gwen was just window dressing for No Doubt. She has no musical talent to speak of except a passable voice. I don't like her because she is a huge fraud and a poser. She is somehow known as this iconoclastic girl power feminist rocker chic (think of the lyrics to 'Just a Girl'), but literally ALL she cares about is vapid problematic fashion and being a wife/mother.
She is the epitome of a basic frau! She slept around with the No Doubt members causing drama (think of the video for 'Don't Speak') and has never been single for more than a day in her adult life. She jumped from Tony Kanal of No Doubt straight to Gavin Rossdale and then straight to Blake Shelton. She's just a trophy who has never in her life defined herself apart from a man whether it's her brother or her lovers.
And she gets a total pass on this problematic hypocrisy from the whole of society I guess because she's pretty?

True, she’s no Kim Gordon.
She looked and sounded pretty fucking cool at one point, though. And I give her mad props for insisting on getting paid to be a brash popstar Grrrl at like 36 years old or whatever. It turned out hollow but yeah, it felt fresh and fun for a minute.

I was a No Doubt fan and some of her solo stuff isn't too bad. She's now older and who can blame her --she's on the cusp of 50. She's more a celebrity than a singer now, like J Lo.

She probably doesn’t get enough credit for her influence on style. When No Doubt hit it big, female pop stars looked disheveled/post grunge like Alanis and the Lilith Fair hippy types. Gwen’s bare midriff and hyper girlie makeup made her stand out and soon all the girls were dressing like her.

I associate Gwen with Shirley Manson of Garbage even though their look and sound are not similar, but because they were both chick rockers fronting a mostly male band that hit it big around the same time, and they frequently were on the same rock concert bill. That's a very ignorant comment, R142. Her fashion has always been derivative. She helped popularize 50's revival ska/rockabilly style to flyover America but it was already quite prevalent here in SoCal way before she got famous. I also take issue with your statement that female popstars in the 90's were grungy until Gwen came along and made them all feminine. Seriously? All she has ever done is hopped on the coattails of established trends. She dropped the ska look and started wearing bindis and henna tattoos after she got famous (cause she was dating South Asian Tony Kanal). Then she morphed into a grunge rocker chick when she was with Gavin Rossdale, and now she's all countrified with Blake Shelton. She's just a blank canvas who decorates herself for whatever man she is with at the time. Literally the ONLY thing she cares about is trapping and keeping a man. I'll leave you with the lyrics from Simple Kind of Life which I believe are some of the only lyrics she has actually written herself:
[quote]I always thought I'd be a mom. [quote]Sometimes I'd wish, for a mistake. [quote]The longer that I wait the more selfish that I get. [quote]You look like, you'd be a good dad.

She and No Doubt have never made good music. No serious music fan thinks of them as anything but garbage. Her voice is affected and annoying —I can’t stand that “you make me feel like Christmas” car ad she did last month—and I’ve never understood her appeal (looks, attitude, etc.) at all.

She wasn't the lead singer of No Doubt when it was first formed. The lead guy killed himself before they hit it big. Like someone upthread said, her brother was the main No Doubt man and probably promoted her to lead just because their Mom told him or else.

R156 I know nothing about her clothing line but assume it was streetwear Loli gear in the style of Juicy Couture & Onitsuka Tiger.
I do recall that in the mid-late ‘00s her fragrance line was EVERYWHERE. Walmart and every drugstore carried it. For teens she had cutesy figurine bottles molded on the Love Angel Music Baby dancers and with Claire’s Boutique scent inside (at the time these were like $15) and for adults she had L.a L.A.M.B juice which came in a square glass ‘Rasta’ bottle released to compete in the celebrity frag market (originally L.L was expensive but you can pick up 50ml boxed for $30/35 now). It’s almost impossible to find her fragrances to buy in stores now, and online it’s more rare.
L.a L.A.M.B came out in 2007 and has since changed name (it’s just called ‘L’ now) and has been reformulated (I.e. watered down and made cheaper/worse). Reviews for the new perfume draw comparisons to Benefit’s gingery Maybe Baby and any of the pear scents at Bath & Body Works. While on some skin it is allegedly a femme acquatic with pretty elementals there are also many people who complain that it’s too floral and bombs others with the silage, so acquire and use flaçons at own risk.

Zaldy Goco designed the fashion line until 2007, with the understanding that he’d do his other work simultaneously.
If you asked him what went wrong he’d probably say too many cooks in the kitchen; cooks with very, very strong opinions about how things should look, but with no idea of the impossibility of translating some of those ideas to mass production.
If you asked Gwen, she’d say that he should have dropped everything else and concentrated 100% of his time and attention on her and her ideas.

Hollaback Girl was written about Courtney Love supposedly. Courtney called out Gwen in an interview in the early 2000’s and it pissed Gwen off. Not to mention that When Gavin and Gwen were briefly separated in the late 90’s Courtney pushed herself on him and her and Gavin had a fling.
It’s easy to forget now, but back in the 90’s Gwen was a style trendsetter and icon. Remember when she made the Bindi popular? Crop tops, two toned shoes and Adidas pants? I was in high school in 95-99 and there was a ton of “Gwenabbes” as we called them... all with platinum blonde hair in ponytails. No Doubt was also one of the bands that brought 3rd wave Ska mainstream along with Sublime and Reel Big Fish, but they did it best, combining 80’s sound with pop sensibilities and dancehall reggae. “Tragic Kingdom” is still a classic and their other albums were pretty good too.
Her solo stuff is really not my thing but I applaud her for adding in even more genres such as rap and country. At least she’s experimenting. Gavin was/is way hotter then Blake but they made their relationship last quite a while for the industry and Blake seems like more of “safe” choice after pussyhound/dickhound Gavin.

I would like to say that there was some overlap in 95-97 regarding who was Gavin sleeping with. Gavin & Gwen had a very off/on relationship in the beginning. When he wasn't with Gwen, he and Courtney Love sometimes hooked up, that is, whenever Courtney wasn't busy with Edward Norton or Billy Corgan or whoever else. Years later, Courtney brought up her "affair" with Gavin, but Gavin was merely one of her flings, and Gwen knew that already.
There are some things I don't like about Gwen. I don't think it's right to build your "comeback" off a single (and accompanying publicity campaign) that details how much you hate your ex and the father of your children. 'Used to Love You' was a shitty move worthy of someone Taylor Swift's age. As a Courtney fan though, I got turned off Gwen for good when she and her "Voice" team of singers sang 'You Get what You give' complete with the line... "Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson, Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson, you're all fakes run to your mansions." Again, the woman is juvenile and her style is clownish.
