Brooks Brothers, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, Lord & Taylor, and Neiman Marcus
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 29, 2018 5:35 PM |
I just checked out my closet, and most of my pants are from LL Bean. I have a very short inseam, and I like that I can get my correct size, and not pay for alterations. I think most of my shirts are from JC Penney. I also check out Marshall's and TJ Maxx. And I just received some pajamas from Brooks Brothers. I know I probably paid more than I needed to, but they had the simplest, most classic pajamas I could find, 100 % cotton, plain white.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 29, 2018 5:41 PM |
I don’t know. Brooks Brothers stopped making their traditional Traditional Fit, and the replacement not only costs $45 more, it no longer has a pocket.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 29, 2018 5:45 PM |
Fashion threads have been one of the most surprising things about DL for me.
I would have bet money that participants in a gay gossip site would be all about trendy fashion and designer names (e.g. Prada Hos) but if anything, the reverse is true: Normcore middle American brands like Gap/JC Penney/LL Bean dominate the threads.
That may be because most DLers are over 50 (even if they look ten years younger) and thus are wise enough to no longer want to dress like teenagers.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 29, 2018 5:48 PM |
Dillard’s, Amazon, Charles Tyrwhitt for shirts, DSW. Sale only, always.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 29, 2018 5:54 PM |
As for myself (and I am under 30) I buy most things online or at smaller boutique type stores.
Barneys Warehouse and NM Last Call have good deals on dress clothes (don't need a lot of those) and you can often find brands you like, even slightly obscure vaguely fashiony ones like Life After Denim or Faherty on Amazon for a lot less than in stores. It's often last season's merchandise, but a sweatshirt or pair of jeans is pretty timeless, lol.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 29, 2018 5:55 PM |
Sandro, All Saints, Reiss mostly
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 29, 2018 5:56 PM |
R14 I'm not over 50, actually I'm a millennial, but I settled into my Southern Preppy style in high school and stayed there. Just classic styles that never really goes out of style. The only brands that I've gone crazy for since then has been in that area such as Vineyard Vines, Southern Tide, Southern Proper, etc...
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 29, 2018 5:56 PM |
Gotcha R19, but Vineyard Vines is a lot different than Gap/JC Penney.
I hear Duck Head is making a comeback. Or at least they've been throwing ads in my insta feed lately, and the ads seem to indicate the brand disappeared and came back.

R3 I dont know what Goodwill you shop in,but the ones here in florida charge almost as much as retail . And any designer duds go into their "boutique collection" . That being said, though I loathe them., I have pulled an amazing amount of real silver out of there stores. Apparently they only are familiar with the "sterling" mark and have never heard of hallmarks. I aint bitchin,I made ove 3 grand extra pocket cash in 2018 for about $1 a piece.

Old Navy, Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 29, 2018 6:08 PM |
R21 True, but I buy my Vineyard Vines at Belk, so I don't really make a distinction. Also, Belk has a great store brand that is similar to VV, Crown and Ivy.
Duck Head had become an exclusive brand at Goody's, then they went bankrupt. The Goody's name was resurrected by Stage stores, but Duck Head and Goody's were separated. I have seen Duck Head pop up occasionally over the last decade, including at the new Goody's but never a full line of clothing, they had the best khakis so I hope they are making a big comeback.

Many of my clothes I have purchased from Nordstrom (not Nordstrom Rack). The rest are from other stores if I find something I like or need something in particular.

Kohls for most things. But casual pants only from Levi’s online. Only place I can get pants that fit properly and look good.
It is ridiculously hard to find a 40 waist. Every major store - including Levi’s specialty stores - only sell to 38 waist. Occasionally find an oddball 40 at TJ Maxx or discount store. I have a BMI of 25 - so not really overweight. Just tall- but the inseam is never the problem, it’s the waist size. With all the fat people in America, why do stores not sell pants over size 38?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 29, 2018 6:29 PM |
Walmart simplified their entire line of dress shirt offerings a few months ago- you can get a very sturdy Oxford dress shirt in white for about $15. The old style had Peter Pan-like collars with pearly buttons and was too blousy, but the new fit is trimmer and indistinguishable from shirts from a high end store.
They’re breathable if you sweat easily, or are active during the day and because I work with chemicals all day so they’re easy to spot bleach too.
UNIQLO for dress pants, they will custom the inseam for free of $5 extra (invisible)

R14 'high' fashion is despised and mocked here at DL. Along with faddy trends such as the dreaded skinny jeans and dress shoes without socks, though I have repeatedly told the grouches that hate those that they are being worn wth 'invisible' socks, the 'over the heel and toe' kind you wear wth sneakers.

Walmart is fine for basics like underwear and lounge pants. I got an ugly Christmas sweater there. Also, their George brand is ok, I ate before a job interview and got food on my pants and I was able to run in Walmart and get a replacement pair of slacks, that were not great but nicer than I expected.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 29, 2018 6:38 PM |
Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx, Bonobos
All on sale. The markups on clothes are the highest in retail. Only a fool pays full price.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 29, 2018 6:41 PM |
Grailed, Crossroads Trading and the local thrift stores (but NOT Goodwill, it's too expensive and they're corrupt). I get virtually all of my clothes used. Quality is excellent, price is low (e.g., I recently got a beautiful and extremely well made Prada shirt on Grailed for $30 + shipping.)

r29 Nearly every major retailer goes up to at least 42 in most pants, and often 44. You can certainly find Levi's in those sizes at JCPenney, Kohl's, and even Amazon.
And then they have Big and Tall for the larger sizes. My problem is finding things with a 28 inseam in the larger sizes.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 29, 2018 6:52 PM |

R40, I mentioned LLBean upthread. My pants have a 42" waist (actually I need to switch to a 40" waist, since I've been losing weight, but I only have a 28" inseam. In today's parlance, I think I'm considered "thicc".

I have a house with a yard, and work from home. I have a dog and two cats. I prefer clothes that are basic, machine washable, and relatively cheap. I get jeans from GAP and tops from UNIQLO. Found a brand and style of sneakers I really like and bought several pairs (they're all black). It's nice not worrying when I get mud or fur on my clothes, I just toss them in the wash and grab a nearly-identical outfit from my closet.
I do need to get some nicer stuff for nights out. Although recently I went to an upscale restaurant and saw a musical and was surprised in both places how dressed-down everyone was. Most people dress for comfort, I suppose.

R46 Where are you? I saw "Norma" last year at the Met and felt overdressed in a pair of chinos and a blazer - everyone else, it seemed, was in jeans. Not quite "People of Walmart" attire, but edging towards that look.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 29, 2018 7:27 PM |
R46 I've never understood this "dressing for comfort," I feel comfortable in a suit, I feel comfortable in jeans and a tee, I feel comfortable in my birthday suit. If you are uncomfortable in any outfit it is because it doesn't fit you, not the the style of clothing.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 29, 2018 7:33 PM |

I'm self employed, I haven't worn a suit in 10 years, and I'm not wearing one while I'm still alive

I had to look up "Belk" R26-- they're not in the NE or CA. Funny name, it sounds like it should be a Serbian curse word. And link to the revived Duck Head for you.
R34-- is that because many DLers are from smaller towns and cities where "high fashion" is not a thing? That's been my thought--that many of them live in places where a man in anything other than normcore would be looked at askance and furthermore many of them are just keeping their heads above water, so spending money on clothes is not an option.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 29, 2018 7:39 PM |

R51 Belk was the family's name, it use to be Belk's also they were interesting in that until the turn of the century many of their stores had hyphenated names like Belk-Hudson, because instead of just building corporate owned stores in new areas they would instead bring on partners who shared ownership of the store in that area.
Thanks for the Duck Head link, I see their prices are alot higher than I remember. But, I use to buy all mine at a corporate outlet that they had in a small town near me, so I was never actually paying full retail.

My brother in law stood out for really dressing down at some event, I can’t recall which, probably a funeral of a close relative. He did look like an idiot. Another BIL wore a tie with the three stooges on it. I think it’s the only tie he owns. I wish they tried, just a bit.

Stuff that manufactured for the outlets is not the same quality and Gap/BR does that as do many department stores with their own brands.
But most of the stuff at at Nordstrom Rack is not Nordstrom's name brand but rather markdowns of other brands that they've removed from the stores. Smaller brands in particular don't have the budget to make a second, cheaper line, and so those are the same thing you'd get in the main store, just out of season. Last Call (NM) works the same way.

Banana Republic. I know exactly what size fits me so I don't have to try anything on. The clothes are classic, not flashy. That said, in recent years, I find Banana's clothes boring. Everything is either black or gray.

Everlane is a good choice for clothes that (in my experience) are simple and plain but very well-made. They're based in San Francisco, online only.

I live in S. California and I love dressing fashionably well. and because I work in the entertainment business (low paying marketing geek), I can wear anything I like to work and I buy almost all my clothes at "Out of the Closet" a gay thrift store chain. Since it's a gay charity, most of the donations are from gay guys and there's always great fashionable stuff. I recently bought a brand new high fashion dress shirt that still had it's Barney's price tag of $175 for $10, a Christian Dior suit for $30, and then spent $70 having it tailored, but still an amazing buy. I find stuff like this all the time. I especially like their $1 rack. Their price tags are color coded, so every week one of the colors are designated as $1!
And i also regularly donate stuff to them as well

[quote] Only the 1% can buy all their clothes from Prada. Regular people can only afford to splurge on the accessories once in awhile.
LOL.
Not even almost.
So much designer gear is bought by people who can't afford it but save up, buy on sale, at thrift stores, etc.
But it's people thinking that "only the 1%" wear it is what keeps these brands in business.

Thinking about using Stitch Fix. The straight boys at work started using it and they look pretty cool.

ebay actually, odd that I can't stand the smell of Goodwill and get ill at the thought of putting those clothes on me -- but not ebay. I can tell when they come from a clean queen or haven't been worn at all. Great things like a silk Brioni shirt and for very little money.
Only once has something felt "off", arriving in a flat envelope and smelling like old cologne from 1993. I didn't even take it inside and ebay seller took it back immediately and refunded.

Poshmark is the best place to go for gently used or new designer clothes and well known brands for men.
