There are a lot of singers who have since copied Taylor Dayne's sound and style, but her bombastic voice was unlike anyone on the radio at the time.
Do you remember when Tell It To My Heart was a hit song?

It was her Jagged Little Pill
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 26, 2018 5:21 AM |
"Bombastic" is exactly right. And if you'd bothered to look up its definition, you'd have seen it's not exactly a compliment.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 26, 2018 5:24 AM |
R2 you're an idiot
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 26, 2018 5:27 AM |
I'll Be Your Shelter really showcases her voice
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 26, 2018 5:28 AM |
I KNOW you are, Pee-Wee / R3, but what am I?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 26, 2018 5:30 AM |
R5 telling someone to grow up when you type like a girl in third grade
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 26, 2018 5:34 AM |
Tell it to My Heart was a hit when I was a very naive teenager. I absolutely loved it and the video clip had two hot boys dancing in the background, who I presumed were her completely hetero boyfriends.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 26, 2018 5:43 AM |
Get a load of R6 talking about third grade, when he / she / it doesn't even know the definition of the third grade vocabulary word "bombastic."
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 26, 2018 5:49 AM |
She was one of the singers that went all out with her singing that I liked (usually not a fan of that). She made it work.
It's surprising her voice has held up well, considering her singing style. Guess she took care of it otherwise.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 26, 2018 5:53 AM |
She's perfect for Broadway
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 26, 2018 5:54 AM |
I love when Sandra Bernhard was on David Letterman and the she sings Taylor Dayne's "Don't Rush Me" with the band throughout the interview.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 26, 2018 6:01 AM |
Taylor always came across as a overly tough broad, in that NY/NJ manner that makes my skin crawl. It’s in her voice, makeup, mannerisms, videos, interviews.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 26, 2018 6:16 AM |
love her
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 26, 2018 6:48 AM |
Was she actually outrageous or was that just her image?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 26, 2018 7:06 AM |
She didn't have as many big albums and hit singles that I thought she would.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 26, 2018 3:14 PM |
She was great and expected more albums from her.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 26, 2018 3:17 PM |
I hated that song.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 26, 2018 3:19 PM |
I always thought the song was titled Tell it to My Twat.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 26, 2018 3:23 PM |
Just how many Taylors are out there FFS? Can't keep them straight, m or f.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 26, 2018 3:26 PM |
This was around the time of Lisa Lisa and Debbie Deb
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 26, 2018 7:49 PM |
Even for the late 80s, the hair and makeup in the video were embarrassingly bad. It looks like someone chopped up an old gray granny wig and used it as extensions in the back.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 26, 2018 7:58 PM |
Screamed Lawn Guyland. Imagine my surprise when I found out she actually was from there.
Heart of Stone is a good song.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 26, 2018 8:30 PM |
She had several big hits in the late 80s. I still like her.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 26, 2018 9:49 PM |
Sounding and looking divine here. It's a shame that she seems so insecure about her appearance.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 26, 2018 10:12 PM |
R12, yes, she's one bad-ass broad with a complete arsenal of garish, stereotypical New Yawk/Lon-Gyland Jewess mannerisms and flourishes, but that, for me, is a delicious part of her not inconsiderable charms. If you prefer her in a sleeker/more refined mode, catch the glorious video for "I'll Be Your Shelter" which someone posted upthread.
Regardless, she easily remains one of the two or three most talented white female singers to emerge in the 1980s. Her voice is that impressive.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 26, 2018 10:25 PM |
I actually think she looked best in that first album era. Whoever styled her was right on the money. Better to embrace the tough girl vibe rather than fail at trying to look soft, which she did. The nosejob ironically made her difficult to photograph.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 26, 2018 10:27 PM |
I only recently learned that Dayne wasn't a one hit wonder, from a list article on the biggest female charters on the Billboard Hot 100.
There was a singer in the 00s called Anastascia, who seemed to take up where Dayne left off. Anastascia was a big success outside the US.

R27 must be a kid or stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 26, 2018 10:39 PM |
The very first time I heard this song was at a strip show in New orleans. I was so drunk I jumped up and started dancing with the stripper ! He loved it,and yes,I went home with him that night.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 26, 2018 10:40 PM |
Dayne was before my time but I'm not a child.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 26, 2018 10:43 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 26, 2018 10:47 PM |
What is she doing now?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 26, 2018 10:57 PM |

I think it's fair to say: you're butthurt.

You can’t fix stupid. You can flush it though.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 26, 2018 11:27 PM |
No substantive reply? No surprise. And not even a witty riposte make up for it... flush away, butthurt.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 26, 2018 11:43 PM |
R35 is the OP of the "Soothing Hemorrhoids" thread... I didn't know just how on target I was with "butthurt"... lmao... make that "lmho".

by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 26, 2018 11:53 PM |
Taylor is still performing and looking good. She still sounds good, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 27, 2018 12:00 AM |
I like this song from her. "My Heart Can't Change".
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 27, 2018 1:38 PM |
She’s a very good singer.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 27, 2018 6:23 PM |
Why did she hack up her face though?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 27, 2018 6:33 PM |
She was never pretty in the face.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 27, 2018 6:35 PM |
R7, wrote this before on another thread -- but I fucked the little white dancer behind Dayne in that video back in the 90s. His name was Willie and he was adorable and hustling at Cats in NYC. He told me his dance career had ended after he was shot in the knee in a bar. Can't make that stuff up.
He also did a drag act on cable access under the name of Cherries Jubilee, I think. He had wigs on stands in his bedroom where he took me home.
NYC was still a lot of fun then.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 27, 2018 6:54 PM |
(P.S. The first time I heard Madonna's "Ray of Light" album was in the cab taking us to his place. It sounded amazing and reminds me of him and that night to this day).
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 27, 2018 6:56 PM |
Let’s focus on Taylor Dayne - not your past sex life!
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 27, 2018 6:58 PM |
She had a pretty big makeover before her second album came out, nose job, dyed her hair blonde and straitened it, and toned up her body more.
After career took a big downturn with her third album, she tried acting for a while. She got some work, but couldn't get regular work, but did land a recurring role on the show Rude Awakening and played a stripper in the move Stag. She didn't get naked, but did give head to a gun (see clip below).
She still makes money touring because she still sounds good singing live.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 27, 2018 7:02 PM |
The late 80s/very early 90s had some great dance-pop, I loved that era. We recently had a big thread on Jody Watley, that was very positive. Unfortunately that particular brand of dance-pop went out of style around '92 when Nirvana and hip-hop took over.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 27, 2018 7:33 PM |
she was born Leslie Wonderman - my demo producer was in a L.I. cover band with her called The Next - I think she is one of the artists Clive Davis fucked over because of his obsession with Whitey Houston. I saw her at the Beacon and all I remember was opener Corey Hart didn't show up and Taylor opened her set on a riser in full black leather biker regalia complete with motorcycle revving up sounds. I thought I saw her coming out of one of those expensive tower residences over by the West Side Highway about 14 years ago, she's very striking and petite.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 27, 2018 7:57 PM |
Tell It To My Heart is also the title of her debut album.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 27, 2018 8:52 PM |
Love Will Lead You Back. Her only #1 single.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 27, 2018 9:25 PM |
I really like her - something about her sound - just her - she is an empowering presence - really positive energy with her. Maybe she deserves a sedate comeback. It would be nice.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 27, 2018 9:34 PM |
I swear, I thought she was Anastasia making a comeback under a different name. Same look, same voice.
Saw her in a small club in Atlanta way post peak and she was cool but hated the cigarette smoke. Said it was ruining her voice. I bet she's happier now.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 28, 2018 12:09 AM |
[quote]she still sounds good singing live.
No, she doesn't.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | December 28, 2018 12:13 AM |
The last iconic thing she'll ever do is this hysterical performance on Wendy Williams' birthday episode from earlier this year.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | December 28, 2018 12:41 AM |
There were a lot of other singers and songs like Taylor Dayne's, but no one had a voice like hers. It's hard to remember, but at the time she came out with a ton of publicity.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 28, 2018 12:51 AM |
She probably would have had more hit songs had she stuck to dance 💃🎶music. It seems like she became more interested in Diane Warren type ballads.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | December 28, 2018 12:57 AM |
R59 her biggest hits were those ballads.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 28, 2018 1:28 AM |
She did mostly dance-pop with a few ballads.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 28, 2018 2:06 PM |
She's doing a double-bill concert with Sheena Easton next summer in Chilie.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 28, 2018 4:54 PM |
She should’ve transitioned to slinky R&B songs if she wanted her career to continue through the 90s
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 28, 2018 5:29 PM |
The quality of her singles went down and started all sounding the same. Too much sameness until the public had had enough.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | December 28, 2018 5:38 PM |
Her of her albums all contain some good tracks Each album contains “pop gems” on it.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | December 28, 2018 5:44 PM |
R64 is stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 28, 2018 5:45 PM |
She missed the boat when the pop landscape changed in the early 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | December 28, 2018 5:51 PM |
Changing styles, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 28, 2018 5:52 PM |
Leslie Wonderman.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | December 28, 2018 5:55 PM |
Her records rocked more than Whitney's! But she wasn't unique or creative enough, like Madonna, Cher or Cyndi Lauper, to be a superstar. Like I said above I don't remember much about her set except the opening.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | December 28, 2018 6:02 PM |
Clive Davis wrote about Dayne in his memoir, and he said her career dipped because she insisted on writing her own music and it wasn't that great. By the time she realized she's fucked up, it was too late for a comeback. She was too old and the music scene had changed.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | December 28, 2018 7:33 PM |
She had some versatility with her voice and could sing several different genres of music. But it's very tough to stay big in music for a long period of time. One misstep, and you're time is over.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | December 28, 2018 7:39 PM |
Taylor Dayne & Sheena Easton are a good combo. Really good singers.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | December 28, 2018 7:49 PM |
R66 is an infected cunt
by Anonymous | reply 74 | December 28, 2018 8:12 PM |
Her memoir is coming out in February.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | December 28, 2018 8:20 PM |
Good! I hope Willie the Hustler gets a shout out in her book. He was so cute.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | December 28, 2018 8:22 PM |
She could have stayed on the radio by doing some duets.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 6, 2019 12:50 AM |
I generally like Taylor Dayne; loved a handful of her songs. But, was she really that original?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | January 6, 2019 12:51 AM |
R78, are most singers on the radio that original? They are mostly manufactured and auto tuned.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | January 6, 2019 1:47 AM |
I agree, R79, but OP said at the time Dayne arrived, she was "unlike anyone." Is that really true.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | January 6, 2019 2:00 AM |
She had this tough edginess that rivaled that of Pat Benatar.
What if Pat Benatar had sung, “Tell It To My Heart,” would it still have been as successful?
by Anonymous | reply 82 | January 6, 2019 2:03 AM |
No one had the huge Mariah Carey type voice in that genre of music at that time. Lisa Lisa, Debbie Deb, Klymaxx, Expose, Michele - all had thinner voices.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | January 6, 2019 2:12 AM |
Taylor Dayne actually made more money from her songwriting royalties on this song than anything else in the 1990s. I think Tina was probably her inspiration for singing style.... similar way of attacking a song.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | January 6, 2019 2:16 AM |
R83, I always thought Mariah Carey had a lighter voice than Whitney. She still had a huge voice, but the timbre was lighter than Whitney’s.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | January 6, 2019 2:16 AM |
r83, who in the hell is debbie deb?
by Anonymous | reply 86 | January 6, 2019 11:40 AM |
r86 she had a few dance songs in the mid-80s that were popular in clubs. I think she may have been more of a regional artist in the tri-state area, like the Cover Girls, instead of nationally popular.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | January 6, 2019 2:15 PM |
The cover Girls were a national act. Nobody ever heard of no Debbie Deb!
by Anonymous | reply 88 | January 6, 2019 2:48 PM |
I recall a friend of mine went to see Taylor Dayne perform at the Nectarine Ballroom in Ann Arbor in 1993 or thereabouts, not long after her third album had come out and sold poorly. It was a Tuesday night the less attended gay night at the Nectarine at that time. Not many people there. He said she looked down at the turnout and went through the motions of her show (a track date) then ended abruptly after doing I'll Be Your Shelter.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | January 6, 2019 2:52 PM |
I saw her in concert in 1990. Packed big theater.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | January 6, 2019 2:55 PM |
The tinny Casio-plink-plink music makes it unbearable.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | January 6, 2019 4:34 PM |
I loved her first album the most.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | January 7, 2019 11:52 AM |
Taylor got her pussy steamed!
by Anonymous | reply 94 | January 7, 2019 6:42 PM |
that Prove Your Love shit is a very overused chord progression with a boring lyric. she sounds like she's singing 'GOT TO HEAR YOUR BODY NEXT TO MINE" which doesn't make sense. Her hair is an unattractive rat's nest but the guitar player she's playing up to is hawt.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | January 7, 2019 7:21 PM |
"Tell It to My Heart" was one of my favorite freestyle hits of the late 80s. That really was a great era for dance pop. I never really liked any of her other songs, unfortunately.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | January 7, 2019 7:27 PM |
She looks dreadful now. Almost trans.
