Netflix recommendations

I need your good advice. Have just started subscribing to Netflix. What should I watch? Not into sci-fi, fantasy, or action movies. So far I've heard The Haunting of Hill House and Ozark are good bets.

I just finished Season One of “Flowers”, an offbeat British dramedy starring Olivia Colman who is fantastic. Darkly funny, quirky and ultimately very moving. The writer is Japanese-British and has a hilarious supporting role on the show.

by Anonymousreply 28December 28, 2018 1:36 PM

Speaking of Penn, you get to see his strange chest hair pattern pretty often. I think the strangeness is the result of his shaving it so often. It's never going to grow back to the way it would have looked naturally, i.e., if he had never shaved it.

by Anonymousreply 29December 28, 2018 1:38 PM

La Mante... great crime series (but subtitled)

The Guernsey Girl.. easy listening, half of Downton in it, but I thought it was just enough for a Christmas week evening watch. Not too heavy, not entirely light.

Black Miirror can be very interesting and it certainly raises important questions about the use of technology but it's so annoyingly and predictably pessimistic that I rarely watch it. I did watch the brand new Black Mirror: Bandersnatch earlier today which is a choose-your-own-adventure kind of interactive movie. It was just as interesting as those kinds of books were in my childhood, meaning not very. I did like the male lead and he was probably the only thing that kept me watching the whole thing through, but otherwise the whole thing was just a one trick pony. Production values are always top notch with Black Mirror so nothing to fault there.

by Anonymousreply 50December 29, 2018 12:13 AM

That's why I called out San Junipiero, because it went in the opposite direction R50 and was not bleak at all.

by Anonymousreply 55December 29, 2018 1:15 AM

Aside from the most annoying theme song in recent memory, I've quite enjoyed Somebody Feed Phil. A likeable host tries lots of food in various locations, some quite beautiful. He also doesn't hesitate to grimace when something tastes terrible. For other escapist viewing: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (gorgeous costumes and promiscuous behavior), Father Brown (watch for that gorgeous tea set), and Monty Don's French Gardens.

Somebody Feed Phil

I’ll Have What Phil’s Having

And if you’re cable-free like me, having Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown on Netflix is a plus.

Abstract: The Art Of Design - 8 episodes, all interesting

The Crown is a good series. A new season is coming with a new cast and I don’t mind at all. I’ll be there, watching.

Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee - quick conversations between Jerry Seinfeld and various comedians.

My Next Guest Needs No Introduction - David Letterman interviews with 7 famous people. My favorites are Obama and Tina Fey.

They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead - Orson Welles attempting to film a movie, which someone else put together, called The Other Side Of The Wind, also available on Netflix.

Joan Didion The Center Will Not Hold

The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs gets better after the first story. Worth a view.

Best Of Enemies, documentary you may already have seen about the 1968 election coverage on ABC with William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal.

There are a few Monty Python’s documentaries. If you’re a fan there might be a couple that you haven’t seen… and all the Flying Circus. And all the Fawlty Towers.

The Twilight Zone - we’re so spoiled, having all this at our fingertips…

I turned on the Fireplace - Birchwood edition, for our family Christmas gathering. It’s pleasant background when you don’t really want to pay attention.

7 Days Out - documentary series, several episodes on various major events, what it takes to make those happen.

I love Black Mirror, but I hated the latest "Bandersnatch". I really hope it isn't the future of entertainment. I hated Choose Your Own Adventure books- the stories were only like 10 pages long.

by Anonymousreply 76December 29, 2018 6:59 PM

I did enjoy how it all culminated to the “Yeah” or “Fuck Yeah” moment.

No, it was not my favorite episode by far but loved how they tried something unique - and it had enough things going for it to make it extremely entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 77December 29, 2018 7:04 PM

If for no other reason to watch, BANDERSNATCH stars the lovely and fragrant young Fionn Whitehead.

by Anonymousreply 78December 29, 2018 7:08 PM

How about some movies with a healthy dose of male nudity!!

by Anonymousreply 80December 29, 2018 7:17 PM

Non-English language (watch it in original language with English subtitles - it pays off) with gay characters: 1. Dogs of Berlin (Germain series): mafia (drugs & bets) + football players + neo-Nazis + Turks + cops with agenda. One of two leads (cops) is gay in LTR. 2. Nothing to Hide (French film): no spoilers, just trust me 3. Eyewitness (Norwegian series): two gay teenagers witness a massacre 4. Elite (Spanish): there is a dedicated DL thread 5. House of Flowers (Mexican?): a comedy, crazy family, the son is gay/bi

English language, with gay characters or themes: 1. The Principal 2. Borderliner 3. Deep Water 4. Crashing 5. Eastsiders (Internet startup, gets much better in later seasons)

by Anonymousreply 81December 29, 2018 7:53 PM

[quote] 2. Borderliner

That's a Norwegian show (with subtitles.)

by Anonymousreply 82December 29, 2018 7:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 83December 29, 2018 7:59 PM

Babylon Berlin is amazing series. It tells people in Berlin from 1928. The seasons have been released and third one is in making. It has complicated and long story lines and characters. The sets costumes acting are all first rate. Note, it isn’t American tv show and doesn’t solve stories in 42 minutes. But it is excellent.

[quote]I love Black Mirror, but I hated the latest "Bandersnatch". I really hope it isn't the future of entertainment. I hated Choose Your Own Adventure books- the stories were only like 10 pages long.

I pretty much agree with the reviewer at Variety. Thankfully most commenters there agreed with him as well. I feared that wouldn't be the case since some people really seem to think the whole concept is somehow revolutionary.

"...“Bandersnatch,” as creative work and not as experiment, falls so short of the standard “Black Mirror” has set that to put it forward is to risk the credibility the series’s first four seasons have earned.

"The best case, perhaps, for “Bandersnatch” is that it’s remembered along the lines of this year’s film “The Cloverfield Paradox,” released on Netflix in a shock-and-awe surprise post-Super Bowl drop whose revolutionary aspect concealed, for a moment, that the movie was a bomb. Invention solely for its sake is dreary and surprisingly unimaginative; of all the things “Black Mirror” could be doing, this seems, sadly, to have been the wrong path, one the show would be well served by ditching and starting its story as close to completely anew as it can."

The British mocumentary "Derek" starring Ricky Gervais is wonderful. I had found the outtakes on YouTube, which are gut punchingly hilarious and decided to start watching it on Netflix. It's a mocumentary of life in a small British old folks home. Derek (Gervais) plays an attendant in the home who is also most likely very autistic (although he's never been tested). His best friend Dougie (the always unintentionally hilarious Karl Pilkington) is the maintenance man for the home, an all-rounder who does everything no one else wants to do. Kev (David Earl) is the smelly, unemployed, sex crazed, beer swigging weirdo who lives in a caravan in the parking lot, but spends almost all of his days inside the nursing home, even though he's not a resident there. His character is by far the most hilarious. They have him doing and saying the most heinous things. Every scene in the show must have taken 20 takes or more for them to get through it because they break up laughing.

Here's one of the outtake reels from the show.

I wish that Netflix would make better shows. Some of the stuff is ok, but most of it, as is with Amazon, sucks.

It’s like there is no “there” to a lot of the shows. There’s no point to them. It’s just a waste of 10 hours.

I thought at times it was funny and sad, the guy could have been rich and famous if he wasn't a pain in the ass.

R122, I don’t care how many times it’s been done. It’s still hot

by Anonymousreply 123December 31, 2018 1:07 PM

I started Babylon Berlin last year but didn't go past episode 2. I don't remember hating it. I guess something else came along I wanted to watch more. I think I'll watch it again.

I watched The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I simply must watch everything Michiel Huisman is in, and though the movie is a little too "G" rated/Hallmark-y for my taste, it features a well-made story, and Huisman and his co-star, Lily James, did not disappoint.

Penelope Wilton, late of Downton Abbey, probably puts in the best performance, but I like her in everything I've seen her in.

Medici is not bad

by Anonymousreply 126December 31, 2018 1:40 PM

Sense8 is HOT and has some great global settings. Other than those two things its absolute trash. Bad writing, bad acting, bad plot. And it's a shame because it's such an original idea. I always wish HBO had picked it up instead

by Anonymousreply 127December 31, 2018 1:42 PM

Is there a Season 2 for Medici? I really liked Season 1.

R135, gratuitous male nudity is never a bad thing? Which episode and why is it shocking ?

by Anonymousreply 138December 31, 2018 8:10 PM

It’s so extended and for no reason done by who you think is the main villain. Same actor starred in a gay almost Hitchockian movie that was actually pretty good. Can’t think of the name. He did not get naked.

Björk Stefansson in Rift. He must be a stage actor. IMDb has him down for only six projects.

The world would be a better place with MORE gratuitous male nudity.

In case you forgot. The actress who plays Dumplin is also in Bird Box.

by Anonymousreply 150January 1, 2019 1:32 AM

I've only watched the first 5 episodes of instant hotel so no spoilers please. But how many of you were shocked by the fussy gay couple's house. They built it up so much by saying they had such great taste only to have a typical suburban house littered with artificial flowers.

Other shows I've watched was the Turkish show called The Protector. It's actually dubbed in English which I usually object to but it saves me from reading subtitles. It's not terribly well acted but weirdly addictive.

I've also watched this movie called Thi Mai about a woman who after her daughter dies, goes to Vietnam in her place to try to complete the adoption of a Vietnamese baby. Not a great movie but heartwarming nonetheless. It's a movie from Spain so subtitles again.

I did watch bird box too. Probably derivative but I don't watch enough horror type movies so it didn't matter to me. It was entertaining and if nothing else you'll get to understand all the memes it's inspired..

by Anonymousreply 151January 1, 2019 6:59 AM

Hell on Wheels. Historical drama about the building of the railroads out west starring Anson Mount.

Turn: Washington's Spies. Historical drama about the Revolutionary War spy ring.

A lot of NOVA episodes from PBS.

If you want male nudity and don't mind bloody violence, Spartacus is amazing.

by Anonymousreply 153January 1, 2019 9:54 AM

R151 .... it was either going to be the most stunning Instant Hotel ... or what it was. Frankly, I cant believe any gay would have fake flowers in their house, but I think those two queens fit a stereotype ... I was equally shocked that it was in the heart of suburbia ....lol

by Anonymousreply 154January 1, 2019 10:20 AM

I just binged Series 1 of Instant Hotel today. Thanks for your recommendations. In December 2018, it was announced Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen will replace Luke Jacobz as host in 2019. Not sure why. I like Luke. I hated the over-the-top contestants that just made judging unfair.

by Anonymousreply 155January 1, 2019 11:44 AM

Instant Hotel- we binged it last night: Leroy's award winning home was a piece of shit backing up to the highway! If he hadn't built it up so much and not been such a prissy bitch to everyone he would have received a higher score. Fake flowers and cheesy decorative crap EVERYWHERE. His face while getting his score was priceless. Do Australians have to clean their overnight rentals themselves? Why no cleaning fee like air bnb?

I feel like we need a go fund me to send the 50's Americana couple to the USA. Also, Babe and Bondi had some definite Kath & Kim tendencies. Bondi fell into an American accent a lot wonder if she goes to school in the US.

Is round 2 posted?

by Anonymousreply 165January 1, 2019 8:47 PM

PEAKY BLINDERS. Every season is phenomenal, but when you compare them to each other - the newer season always blows the previous one out of the fucking water. by Anonymousreply 181January 3, 2019 9:36 AM

I did it on the recommendation of people in this thread and also from a good personal friend. But looking back, I don't know why I sat through the entire first season of INSTANT HOTEL. What a piece of shit. And what a bunch of unpleasant people.

I'd like to move them all to Midsomer, where they will each get what they deserve..

by Anonymousreply 185January 3, 2019 12:50 PM

I watched episodes 1-6 and when I saw that Terry and Anita couple insist people clean their house on top of a $360 cleaning fee while surreptitiously spying next door to make sure tenants are quiet once the clock struck 10; I thought, good luck increasing your traffic. And a 9AM check-out time on top of that? Their so-called ZEN home sounds way too stressful to enjoy any stay. Plus, they played fast and loose with their location as they're a fucking half hour hilly walk to downtown. Not that there seemed much in Brisbane worth seeing, South Bank was literally a cement pond with some sand, and a band-aid. On top of that, Terry seemed like a dick.

by Anonymousreply 186January 3, 2019 5:39 PM

I don’t understand how you can make profit of making your house into a hotel.

by Anonymousreply 187January 3, 2019 5:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 188January 3, 2019 7:11 PM

It’s boring

by Anonymousreply 189January 3, 2019 10:01 PM

I watched an episode of the life changing magic of Tidying up on Netflix. It features a tiny japanese lady (4 feet 7 inches) who goes to American homes to tell them to clean up their act. She travels with a translator. From what I saw it's all about thanking your house and then thanking your clothes before you dump them only keeping what gives you joy. I'm not sure if that will help me in trying to declutter my house.

She's also a big believer in folding your clothes into tiny rectangles.

by Anonymousreply 190January 3, 2019 11:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 202January 4, 2019 1:40 PM

I just finished Bodyguard-it was great. Highly recommended BBC suspense drama. I like how a lot of British tv shows are just 6-8 episodes and get resolved (I.e. no cliff hangers at the end). I wonder if there will be a season 2?

by Anonymousreply 204January 4, 2019 1:56 PM

For lighter fare, I recommend Rita and Merli (both are about school teachers - in Denmark and Spain respectively).

Unfortunately Netflix US has only aired Season 1 of Merli. I understand it has aired the subsequent seasons in other countries so I am hoping we’ll get to watch them in the US eventually.

by Anonymousreply 205January 4, 2019 4:25 PM

Yeah, what is up with Netflix and their seasons of shows? Sometimes they'll go backwards. Sometimes, even with an old show, they only have the first few seasons. Sometimes, they only have the last few seasons. I understand they contract for content but couldn't they contract in some explicable and sensible way and then air them in order?

by Anonymousreply 206January 4, 2019 4:30 PM

Thought I would absolutely hate it, but I’m hooked.

Pen Badgely does psychopath very well, and John Stamos is still hot AF.

Marie Kondo. Ugh. It is, however, interesting how someone can become a celebrity in the U.S. and not even speak the language. The power of television. Let's hope Marie Kondo does not harbor political ambitions.

Her "method" could be explained in one 10 minute segment with Dr. Oz. I completely buy into the idea of emptying the closet and deciding what you want to retain and use in the future. It is helpful to thank the pieces you are sending out into the world. Closing the relationship with the items you are deaccessioning just clarifies what you are doing and helps get the job done. A few years ago, I moved from a house I owned for 15 years. Yes, things had accumulated in closets and drawers. Yes, lots of choice had to be made. 10 minutes with Marie Kondo might have helped a bit at the start, but I soon came around to just her sort of approach.

Folding socks and underwear so that they can be filed away standing up is too much. That's a huge time suck and usually adds little benefit. Very few of her clients will be folding their undies six months from now.

But, whatever. She is a crafty little thing and she's getting paid some decent television bucks. By Christmas, I expect to see a line of Marie Kondo home care products being pushed everywhere. And there will be a flood of Marie Kondos next Halloween. She created a strong persona. Maybe she does have political ambitions, after all.

Not on Netflix here, in Canada, but on Sundance TV, I'll recommend it nevertheless: "The Bureau", a French spy series, starring Mathieu Kassowitz. In some ways, it's similar to "Homeland", and it's purportedly loosely based on some of the real cases the French intelligence had to deal with in the Middle East and Northern Africa.

Russian Doll has its charm. I don't think there are a lot of shows that let characters ramble on and on about some inane topic only to get to a rather profound punchline. And I find Natasha Lyonne utterly charming. And I am a gay guy.

by Anonymousreply 249February 4, 2019 10:34 AM

Dear Ex - sweet gay themed film from Taiwan . I loved it.

That looks fabulous. I love the Chinese lisa kudrow bitch stand in.

[quote]the Chinese lisa kudrow bitch stand in.

I don't understand. Did you think one of them looked like her? Had a role like Kudrow's in Friends or The Comeback?

by Anonymousreply 252February 7, 2019 1:23 AM

Like Phoebe, except she sings “Tasty Cat” ?

by Anonymousreply 253February 7, 2019 1:28 AM

R252, never mind, you sound too daft

by Anonymousreply 254February 7, 2019 3:05 AM

White Collar and QAF were two of my favorite shows, but Netflix deleted them. Just finished watching Glee. I’m looking for another entertaining completed series with 6 seasons or so.

by Anonymousreply 255February 12, 2019 8:36 PM

Another plug for BODYGUARD here, so twisty and turny, and Richard Madden's throbbing . . . erm, jaw muscles deserve an Emmy!

by Anonymousreply 256February 12, 2019 8:42 PM

Loved “Russian Doll” & love Natasha Lyonne.

by Anonymousreply 257February 12, 2019 8:50 PM

Russian Doll is a boring show thinking of itself as exciting. Natasha's acting is very mannered.

by Anonymousreply 258February 12, 2019 9:28 PM

I liked Russian Doll and found it pretty entertaining, but sort of agree with r258, it could be better. And what's up what Natasha's old school New Yawk accent? I think she's from NYC originally, but still she is laying it on pretty thick for this role.

by Anonymousreply 259February 12, 2019 9:30 PM

I can remember when Hollywood was trying to make Lyonne happen. And it didn't. I can see why now.

by Anonymousreply 260February 12, 2019 9:46 PM

Wasn't Lyonne most remembered for riding the white horse?

by Anonymousreply 261February 12, 2019 9:52 PM

I hated Russian doll but I LOVE Sex Education. Gillian Anderson is the balls. So fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 262February 12, 2019 9:56 PM

Netflix really has gone down the drain in terms of viewing choices. It's actually pretty useless unless you're into television shows (which I'm not). Their selection of movies is always lame as hell. I actually preferred when it was just DVD's because then they had practically everything available, and I don't watch TV or movies anyway so it was perfect for me. I'm thinking of canceling it and just going back to buying DVD's so that I'll always own it (which isn't always guaranteed when you buy online).

by Anonymousreply 263February 12, 2019 9:59 PM

One of Shonda's first Netflix shows was released a few days ago. Youth & Consequences.

by Anonymousreply 264February 12, 2019 10:01 PM

Isn't it ironic, r263, the choice of movies is so much more limited now that the "future" has arrived?

by Anonymousreply 265February 12, 2019 10:01 PM

Shoot. Youth & Consequences is a Youtube Channel Exclusive. I thought Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy) had a deal with Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 266February 12, 2019 10:03 PM

R265 Yes, very ironic. I'm not impressed with "the future" so far.

by Anonymousreply 267February 12, 2019 10:07 PM

It's not "limited" when you consider that there are other resources than Netflix to stream / rent / download / buy movies these days. Hulu, Amazon, HBO Go, for example.

by Anonymousreply 268February 12, 2019 10:15 PM

You don’t watch tv shows? Cray cray

by Anonymousreply 269February 13, 2019 12:44 AM

I can safely say I've never been as successfuly emotionally manipulated by any show as This Is Us. I mean... Logically I know what they're doing but tell it to my tear ducts.

by Anonymousreply 270February 13, 2019 12:57 AM

Gomorrah. Apparently very few people in America have watched it but it's the best tv series I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 271February 13, 2019 1:00 AM

Call My Agent. Subtitled from French but hilarious and delightful.

by Anonymousreply 272February 13, 2019 1:06 AM

Gillian Anderson is just about the only reason to watch Sex Education; she's in every episode, but, alas, not much. (The bully with the big schwanz was kinda hot, but the show never knew what to do with him except give him a plot twist that I called in the very first episode. Because I've seen TV before.)

I'm enjoying the very old-school One Day At a Time reboot, largely for Rita Moreno who just walks off with every episode.

R263: I kept my Netflix DVD account to watch all the movies that Netflix won't stream. Plus there are no buffering or access issues with DVDs and you get the extras.

by Anonymousreply 273February 13, 2019 6:51 PM

Clash of the Collectables!

Not.

by Anonymousreply 274February 13, 2019 6:55 PM

R274, I usually love those antique finding competition type shows but that one was such shit. They bought garbage and sold it for $20 and they were both annoying. Netflix is scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point. It's like they're just going to Britain and Canada and begging for their cheapest crap shows.

New on Netflix: A ten episode run of 'How much wood does a woodchuck chuck?'

by Anonymousreply 275February 14, 2019 5:58 AM

Just binge watched the second and third season of the One Day At A TIme reboot. Man, that show has so much heart. I know, Mary!

by Anonymousreply 276February 14, 2019 12:13 PM

Who do we have to fuck at Netflix to get them to show The Great Canadian Baking Show? Apparently, Schitt's Creek is a cult hit for them, so you'd think they might want to give the Creek fans some more Dan Levy since he's the co-host of GCBS.

by Anonymousreply 277February 14, 2019 11:54 PM

My favorites on Netflix are several French-language detective series.

by Anonymousreply 278February 15, 2019 2:12 AM

There's a Valentine's Day special out today! (Season 3 episode 1)

by Anonymousreply 279February 15, 2019 3:19 AM

I loved The Punisher. He has a great body.

by Anonymousreply 280February 15, 2019 4:16 AM

Any of you watch Carver Kings? If you like strange arts shows, it's a Canadian show where they use chainsaws to carve logs. Some of the work is amazing.

by Anonymousreply 281February 17, 2019 1:18 AM

Has anyone given Umbrella Academy a shot?

by Anonymousreply 282February 17, 2019 4:38 AM

Yes I just finished it, R282. Definitely recommend! I avoided at first. C I’m over the whole superhero thing, but this is more of a very interesting contemporary fantasy graphic novel with compelling characters, interesting plot lines that play with the concept of time. Plus some sexy mens, Mary J Blige, and Ellen Page.

by Anonymousreply 283February 17, 2019 4:53 AM

I am at the 8th epside of Umbrella Academy and I am glad that I stuck with it. It does start really slow, but I love Ellen Page so I stuck with it (and, again, I'm glad I did). Imho it's on the same level as those new DC shows on the DC Channel (Titans, Doom Patrol), but has the extra benefit of comic relief.

by Anonymousreply 284February 17, 2019 6:40 AM

I can't go to bed because I am in the middle of Travelers and it's actually a lot better than I was anticipating.

I thought it was gonna be just another run of the mill Canadian Sci fi show like Continuum (good show but predictable & full of dead plot lines). Now I am still awake - season 2 - flu episode.

I want to know more about 001 also. Damnit. That was a really interesting one...

by Anonymousreply 285February 27, 2019 4:40 AM

Still Game is fucking everything. So cunty yet cozy.

by Anonymousreply 286February 27, 2019 4:45 AM

Travelers is one of the best series I've ever watched. Love it. Such great characters and great writing.

by Anonymousreply 287February 27, 2019 5:18 AM

I love Trevor. I can't believe they act like he's 17. The actor is 30!

The therapist is annoying somewhat though. How he's supposed to be straight is a mystery. Oh Marcy I almost saw your titties - omg! Gurl no!

by Anonymousreply 288February 27, 2019 5:32 AM

The therapist is such a great character... a fully, wholly, totally good and decent person. He's wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 289February 27, 2019 2:02 PM

Yea but that kind of person is a little too fake. I'm on the episode where he just gave away his entire lottery winnings (gurl).

Also , I always thought Eric McCormack's mannerisms were part of him playing Will Truman (the body language, the annunciation, etc) and it turns out it's just McCormack's natural mannerisms.

by Anonymousreply 290February 28, 2019 5:08 AM

R290, wait until next season.

by Anonymousreply 292March 7, 2019 6:45 AM

I have been watching Travelers because of this thread. I am stuck inside because of the snow and cold so I am basically binge watching. I like it okay but my main issue is that it is one of those sci-fi shows that makes up the rules as it goes along. Sometimes people die, sometimes they get do-overs and there is never any real world repercussions to some of the big events they cause.

The series I loved were the first season of Broad Church, Patriot on Amazon and Russian Doll.

by Anonymousreply 293March 7, 2019 11:18 AM

I'm 5 episodes into Mad Men. It's OK but so far I don't understand all of the acclaim. Should I stick with it?

by Anonymousreply 294March 7, 2019 7:56 PM

Tried the free month but canceled because, apart from Russian Doll and Call My Agent, it's mostly crap.

by Anonymousreply 295March 7, 2019 9:29 PM

Despite presence of DL Faves Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Michael Huisman, THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE gets my thumbs down. Imagine SIX FEET UNDER grafted on to AMERICAN HORROR STORY, and played out at interminable length.

by Anonymousreply 296March 7, 2019 10:38 PM

Totally agree, R296. I watched it for Jackson-Cohen and Huisman (both were fine, although never shirtless, c'mon!) and because a good friend totally loved it. It should have been half as long -- one episode per sibling and then wrap it up. A couple of creepy moments, for sure, but it just seemed endless (the episode with all the siblings arguing in the funeral home for an hour made me want to drink formaldehyde).

by Anonymousreply 297March 7, 2019 11:15 PM

I like Mad Men and stuck through it, but didn't LOVE it. It can be a drag at times. I was born in 1990 so maybe some people on are nostalgic about the era? I fucking hated Pete.

by Anonymousreply 298March 8, 2019 10:17 AM

I appreciated THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE from a fucked up family dynamics drama level (what was the last great show in that regard, Six Feet Under?) On a spooky horror level it was quite lame though.

by Anonymousreply 299March 8, 2019 10:26 AM

Love Death + Robots.

Secret City S2 has just been released on Netflix and is just as good, if not better than S1.

The Madeleine McCann documentary is riveting and tragic,

by Anonymousreply 302March 20, 2019 1:40 PM

R302 Devastating. Particularly the part with Rui Pedro's mother.

by Anonymousreply 303March 20, 2019 2:20 PM

I’m really enjoying “The Good Place” with Kristen Bell and Ted Danson. Quirky and genuinely funny.

by Anonymousreply 304March 20, 2019 3:12 PM

The Umbrella Academy had long, boring stretches and never quite the promised pay offs. Hill House was just awful...thrown together schlock.

by Anonymousreply 305March 20, 2019 3:26 PM

Kim's Convenience is a great, gentle comedy.

by Anonymousreply 306March 20, 2019 3:28 PM

Russian Doll is pretty good. It starts out weird but hits its groove around the 3rd episode

by Anonymousreply 307March 20, 2019 4:05 PM

Anyone know when the latest season of Kim's Convenience drops on Netflix. It is a charming show, R306.

by Anonymousreply 308March 20, 2019 6:32 PM

S2 of "Trapped", an Icelandic crime show has arrived on Netflix. S1 was really good but S2 has everything: crime solving in desolate and beautiful Icelandic landscapes, an interracial gay storyline, alt-right bad guys...

Travelers

Black Mirror

Russian Doll

Big Mouth
