It's funny that most people think of Goldie Hawn as Kate Hudson's mother. Kate has a fraction of Goldie's appeal.
My favorite movie of hers is "Butterflies Are Free."
Are you a fan of Goldie Hawn? What do you think is her best performance?

Goldie gave the best performance in the First Wives Club. She had that scene talking about what it's like to get older in Hollywood, and she had the funniest lines.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 25, 2018 12:43 AM |
Kate Hudson will never have the fraction of the charisma her mother has. She's too bitchy and humourless, although I think she is a decent actress.
Goldie can make even a pedestrian film like Protocol that much better because of her presence.
I love Overboard and Death Becomes Her. She was the best part of The First Wives Club.
And she doesn't get enough credit for Wildcats. One of my favourite '80s comedies.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 25, 2018 12:44 AM |
Kate Hudson's one and only good role was in Almost Famous. I don't care enough to delve further into her career.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 25, 2018 12:46 AM |
I had to explain that Goldie Hawn was the more talented mother of a rather mediocre actress whose name was the same as Katy Perry's original name, hence her stage name Katy Perry. We were actually talking about Katy Perry, and before that, Christian rock.

A funny/crazy story related to Goldie:
Straight porn stars Damien Cashmere from the 80s and early 90s (an odd-looking, skinny (back then anyway) latino guy with a big dick) put together a one-man comedy type stage show a few years ago in NY. He told a story about how he fucked Goldie at a swingers party as Kurt Russell watched. Damien had put on a couple hundred pounds since being in porn, and suffered a stroke or heart attack after telling the Goldie story and died backstage at the club he was performing at.

by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 25, 2018 1:18 AM |
Housesitter is Goldie at her best. The movie is kind of slight but she is adorable in it.
It's all the more impressive that she was not involved in pre-production at all, and only took over when Meg Ryan had problems with her part and walked away from the set saying "if you want Goldie Hawn, then go hire Goldie Hawn" or something like that.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 25, 2018 1:19 AM |
Meg Ryan did have a similar Goldie Hawn appeal. But then after a little while, everyone looked at her and thought, "Oh my God, what did she do to her face?"
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 25, 2018 1:23 AM |
She doesn't get enough credit for her success as a leading lady. She was the star of Private Benjamin, Protocol, Swing Shift, Wildcats and Overboard (and even got top billing over Kurt). She was already in her mid-30s by this time and was able to lead her own films.
She was a producer on Swing Shift and - good or bad - she had enough power to have director Jonthan Demme go back and reshoot the film to make her character look better.
I would still love to see the Demme workprint of Swing Shift. Apparently Hawn is outstanding in it.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 25, 2018 1:26 AM |
I prefer Death Becomes Her.
She had a gorgeous fanny and it was best if she could show it off.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 25, 2018 1:26 AM |
I thought Goldie and Kurt were like an 80s Lucy and Desi. She played the wacky screwball roles, which belied her own personality. And she was also behind the scenes, producing and calling the shots.

Death Becomes Her is one of my favorite films of all time, and my favorite movie of hers. She's had so many great roles and I wish she would act more because she's iconic. Fun fact, one of her relatives married some cousin on my dad's side and my grandparents met Kurt and Goldie at the wedding. After my grandmother had passed, I was going through the photo albums and found a poloroid of Goldie from that wedding. I still have it with my family photos

Foul Play, Overboard, Housesitter, Pvt Benjamin are all great,
Goldie can carry a movie, unlike Meg. Foul Play focuses solely on her. Aside from the initial scene, Chevy does not appear until the 45 minute mark.

I love Goldie Hawn and agree she is a true original. My favs are Private Benjamin, First Wives Club, and Seems Like Old Times. But I enjoy her in most anything she does. And boy can she dance. A former colleague of mine did summer stock with her, playing Lady Capulet to her Juliet. She said the story about Goldie showing up to the audition with the part memorized is an exaggeration, but she said that there WAS something about her that stood out--something more than the stereotype dumb blonde. She also worked with Georgia Engel when they were both in Hawaii (my colleague got her masters there and I think Engel grew up there). Her imitation of Engel was uncanny.

Goldie and Kurt are pretty (in)famous for their open relationship. I loved her in Foul Play, everybody looked great in that movie, and San Francisco looked so gorgeous. She played the librarian to perfection toon. Plus it wasn’t strictly a screwball comedy

She was so charming in Everyone Says I Love You. While mostly everyone else sang like shit, Goldie sounded lovely and stole every scene she was in. I really thought she might have gotten another Oscar nomination.
In the early '90s, she did some more dramatic roles like Deceived and CrissCross but Hawn was smart enough to know that people preferred her in comedic roles (although she is a fine dramatic actress).

Swing Shift went through a major bout of editing. Some say this was due to the tensions between Hawn and Demme. Many of Lahti's scenes were re-shot or cut entirely, due to Hawn's belief that she was stealing scenes.

by Anonymous | reply 70 | December 25, 2018 5:34 AM |
Everyone DESPISED Bette Midler on FIRST WIVES CLUB, including (now deceased) director Hugh Wilson, co-star Bronson Pinchot, and (allegedly), Diane Keaton and Goldie, both of whom have suffered other show biz fools previously, if not gladly.
Bette may be (somewhat) better liked on Bway in her elder years. But she's had very, very few colleagues with nice things to say and who wish to reprise the experience.

When she was starting out and trying to break through, she had producers make clear they wanted sex first - the old casting couch. She told them to go fuck themselves. She said she realized it was going to make a breakthrough harder but she didn't care. May be why she worked with a lot of women and later produced herself.
She told that story a good while ago. Years ago. Makes me wonder now if one of them was Weinstein? Does he go that far back? (60's?) Did she ever speak about the recent scandal?

Protocol isn’t a great movie but it was one of my favorites growing up - I saw it in the theater when I was 7 or 8 and then watched it on HBO all the time. Like many Goldie comedies, the first half was a lot better than the second half.
She was legit good in The First Wives Club and Everyone Says I Love You (the MVP of both) and they were both the same year - I thought perhaps she would get some kind of nomination out of it. Sadly she never did anything good after that mini comeback.
I also love Foul Play and Seems Like Old Times - the thing is, even if none of her movies were all out “great” I probably grew up more with her movies than that of any other actor/actress. So I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Goldie.

R37 "Cactus Flower" wasn't her first movie. She appeared as a dancer in "The One and Only Genuine Original Family Band".
She's particularly outstanding in "Butterflies Are Free" and "Foul Play". A lot of her comedies were very funny: "Overboard", "Seems Like Old Times", "Wildcats", "The First Wives Club", etc.
A few missed opportunities: at one point she was supposed to play Velma to Liza Minnelli's Roxie in an earlier film version of "Chicago"; they did a duet or two on one of Goldie's tv specials. Also announced at one point was a live action version of the "Jetsons" with Goldie as Jane and Steve Martin as George Jetson. That could have been a lot of fun if the right people had been involved creatively.
Loved her on "Laugh-In" too!
