I think that's a reference to sending "funny" articles, photos, stories by e-mail, R7, vs a social media platform (Instagram, Twitter), or Facetime and texting.

The young always hate the old. I did when I was young because I thought I would never become old. I didn't think I'd live that long. But if you live long enough, life has a way of sneaking up on you before you realize it. Someday OP's kids/grandkids will be ridiculing him the same way as well. It's human nature.

by Anonymousreply 12December 24, 2018 6:06 AM

What's a BB brand?

Nobody cares what a bunch of entitled millenial pricks think is cool. Let them go find extra jobs to pay off the idiotic debt they racked up for their student loans. Meanwhile, they can impress us their actual accompishments that don’t involve self-involvement and narcissism.

Levi’s are classic.

What are the “cool” jeans now, kids?

by Anonymousreply 23December 24, 2018 9:59 AM

I was a Levi’s guy for 45 years till they made the original heavy-duty denim fabric so hard to find and then charged $50 for a pair when I did. I can remember when a pair of Levi’s was $17.50 (early ‘70s.)

by Anonymousreply 24December 24, 2018 10:14 AM

Jesus Fuck R24! How old are you?

by Anonymousreply 25December 24, 2018 10:33 AM

r25, I'm not r24, but I remember buying 501s in 1978 for maybe $19.99.

by Anonymousreply 26December 24, 2018 10:42 AM

I'm a bit too young to be a baby boomer but what these kids writing these listicles don't realize is the best thing about getting older is not giving a flying fuck about what someone else thinks is "cool" (a baby boomer word if I ever saw one, btw). I'll wear what I want, thanks, and anyone who doesn't like it can avert their delicate young eyes or find a nearby fainting couch to swoon on.

Besides, look at what 20somethings are wearing these days. Kids, you're not in a place to criticize anyone's sense of style, not even a Dockers-wearing suburban dad's.

OP, interesting that you didn't use the more modern spelling of catalogue (catalog).

R13, BB is Baby Boomers.

by Anonymousreply 31December 24, 2018 11:18 AM

Some of these things were never meant to be "cool." Vacation cruises? I hate the whole idea myself and will never take one, but I don't think anyone takes one to be cool.

People probably just take cruises because they enjoy them. Imagine living your life for your own pleasure, and not just as a show to put on for acquaintances and strangers on social media! Imagine doing what you want, regardless of how Instagrammable it is! No wonder the olds have the young folks clutching their pearls! Scandalous!

by Anonymousreply 32December 24, 2018 11:32 AM

You could get a pair of jeans for <$30 in the 80s.

by Anonymousreply 33December 24, 2018 11:34 AM

You are so right, R27. I'm 64 and laugh at all these kinds of articles because I. Don't. Give. A. Shit.

by Anonymousreply 34December 24, 2018 12:03 PM

R32, I’ve only been on one cruise, & it was with my family. I studied in Europe twice in college so I know the backpack/hostel/eurrail experience well.

I actually recommend cruises to people who only have a couple weeks to take vacation. You don’t have to carry luggage or figure out where to go or the local language or transportation.

The drawback to cruises is that they are fattening.

by Anonymousreply 42December 24, 2018 12:49 PM

R37, you really wear cargo shorts? They look bad enough on young people, but it’s downright embarrassing for an old person to sport them.

Wearing something age appropriate will help you look classier and ultimately give you a boost of self-esteem.

by Anonymousreply 43December 24, 2018 12:50 PM

The BBs didn’t give us the fucking Kardashians. Please

by Anonymousreply 44December 24, 2018 12:51 PM

I used to click on the occasional Yahoo article that looked interesting a few years back before they redesigned their website, and then read the comments section. They were always full of Republicans blaming Obama, gay people, and Democrats for everything that ever went wrong in this world no matter what it was. So I am not surprised to see it on the list.

by Anonymousreply 45December 24, 2018 1:00 PM

LOL at the idea that a BB thinks Yahoo is "cool." Do you really think some 63-year-old with a Yahoo account their nephew set up for them 16 years ago thinks Yahoo is "cool"? More likely the thought process is:

1. This account still works fine and I know how to use it. 2. IDGAF about any other criteria for judging email accounts. 3. See 1

by Anonymousreply 46December 24, 2018 1:05 PM

Young 'uns are projecting again. I doubt that old people care about being cool. Maybe you're thinking about celebrities?

by Anonymousreply 47December 24, 2018 1:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 48December 24, 2018 1:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 49December 24, 2018 1:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 52December 24, 2018 1:09 PM

re: the word "cool":

[quote] Meaning "calmly audacious" is from 1825. Slang use of cool for "fashionable" is by 1933, originally African-American vernacular; its modern use as a general term of approval is from the late 1940s, probably via bop talk

Way to put the olds in their place with 80-year-old slang, you crazy young flappers, you! Why, your gin mills and Charleston dances will be the death of our culture!

At 67 (but looking only 53), what IS age appropriate, r43? What WILL "ultimately give (me) a boost of self-esteem"? And by that, I do mean self-esteem, not r43-esteem.

[quote] Watching teevee news.

Agreed. However, the younger generations have nothing to brag about either. I have heard people in their 30s and 40s proudly state that they get all their news from The Daily Show. 20somethings get most or all of their news from various social media.

by Anonymousreply 60December 24, 2018 1:40 PM

Somebody ought to make a list of uncool things only millennials think are cool. I will start:

1. Measuring the worth of their entire existence by how many strangers (whom they'll never meet) from across the country or across the world click a heart on their Instagram/Twitter posts.

2. Requiring a smartphone app even to breathe.

3. Becoming socially inept recluses because technology has almost completely erased the need to leave the house or contact anyone outside of it for any reason.

4. Giving a fuck what boring celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande say, think, and/or do.

5. Recording their dull daily routine and sharing it on Snapchat or Instagram live as though driving to work, going on a walk, or looking out the window is some important Earth shattering event.

by Anonymousreply 61December 24, 2018 1:42 PM

I get all the news I need, and then some, right here on Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 79December 24, 2018 2:35 PM

[quote] AOL. It constantly amazes me how many people not only use it but vividly defend it.

I neither use nor defend AOL but I did use them until about 2002. They were the easiest way to get on USENET in the 1990s. I suspect that many AOL users have the same rationale as Yahoo users: It works, I know how to use it already, it's free, IDGAF what anyone thinks of my email domain, end of story.

What does amaze me is the total faith many younger people have in Google, Alexa, and every kind of social media. There's no concern that your searches and conversations are being recorded, just absolute trust in these megacorporations to be benevolent. Teens and 20somethings are SO cynical about everything in the world except for tech megacorporations and oligarchies. Those, they fully love and trust.

by Anonymousreply 80December 24, 2018 2:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 82December 24, 2018 2:41 PM

Speaking as a Baby Boomer, I think it is safe for me to say that many Baby Boomers have a really hard time accepting the fact that we are now the older generation, and that it is only natural for youth to move on from old people ways.

by Anonymousreply 83December 24, 2018 2:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 96December 24, 2018 8:00 PM

Cruises are a funny thing. When I was young, they were the best family vacations that we ever took (so we ended up going on LOTS of cruises - Caribbean, Alaska, etc.). Here is why they work for a family or larger groups: It is inevitable that most people keep different schedules and have different interests in general; vacations REALLY amplify these differences and can lead to some really big disagreements and bad blood. On a cruise you can share meals with each other (when you feel like doing so) and occasionally meet up for other activities. That said, family members or friends can do their own thing all day and all night without too much worry about one another. Parents don't have to worry too much about kids and friends don't have to keep the same schedule as others in their group. I have traveled all over the world with groups and you really can't say that very often. I have not taken a cruise since college and I might never take one again - but they do have their pros.

by Anonymousreply 97December 24, 2018 8:02 PM

Levis is still cool with millennias. I wear their jeans and I am not a boomer. Nothing is wrong with buffet or shoelaces.

by Anonymousreply 98December 24, 2018 8:24 PM

What's the difference between Levi's 501s and 505s? I'd not heard of 505 buttonfly jeans until r95.

I am a very late Baby boomer, so I've missed many of the material advantages (or perhaps chosen not to sell myself to mind numbing soul destroying jobs to do so).

What is uncool may become cool again.

Vinyl records, anyone?

And I agree about the Levis. Mmm ...

General Foods International Coffees - celebrate the last moments of your lives

by Anonymousreply 130December 25, 2018 3:14 PM

Again, r130, not me. Ever. Flavored coffee = Glade you drink.

by Anonymousreply 131December 25, 2018 3:22 PM

Do mature individuals really care about such a trivial thing?

Who gets to decide what's cool or not?

by Anonymousreply 132December 25, 2018 4:08 PM

YouTube vids of American Bandstand and Soul Train.

by Anonymousreply 133December 25, 2018 4:18 PM

Their children and grand children.

by Anonymousreply 134December 25, 2018 4:19 PM

Who cares what the children and grandchildren think? Oh, that's right, their parents who think they're the center of the universe.

[quote]I am a baby boomer, and I have always loathed, hated, and despised Red Lobster. In fact, I have only eaten there once. It was that bad. Same applies for its Italian brand, Olive Garden, though I've been there three times.

There's no longer any connection between RL and OG. RL is now owned by the people who own Bob Evans and California Pizza Kitchen.

by Anonymousreply 136December 25, 2018 5:15 PM

When I ate at each, r136, it was a part of something called Darden. Unlike you, I have not kept up with the latest.

by Anonymousreply 137December 25, 2018 5:24 PM

R129, You didn't sell yourself to mind numbing, soul killing jobs (usually well paid, secure and with a nice pension). What type of jobs have you held that provided you with a satisfying standard of living and fed your soul? What do you recommend for the youth of today?

by Anonymousreply 138December 25, 2018 6:45 PM

Death to throw pillows and scented candles

by Anonymousreply 139December 25, 2018 6:49 PM

Levi's have been around since 1858. They're not a trend specific to baby boomers.

Nothing will looked be back upon with more ridicule than jeans costing more than a hundred dollars with cutesy Osh-Gosh-B'Gosh stitching on the back pockets

Totally agree R68

by Anonymousreply 141December 25, 2018 7:44 PM

R68, how many WWs did you get? Were you counting?

by Anonymousreply 142December 25, 2018 8:40 PM

My additions to OP's list:

Hairless twinks (you creeps)

Geriatric diapers (more of a necessity than something yoy people really think is cool but still)

Making passes on straight men half your age

Hating on PrEP

Hating on youth for striving for the same opportunities you had at their age

Israel

Getting into arguments online that wanking to Barron Trump is not pedophilia

Hillary Clinton

Joe Biden

Beto

White straight men (except Bernie)

Liberal homophobia

Identity politics (when it serves Hillary and works to bash Bernie without engaging with his platform)

Political corruption (it proves that a politician is a "realist", cf what DL said when Hillary wad getting a million dollar check from big banks for a per 10-min speech)

Killing Brown people overseas (it proves a politician can make Hard Choices)

by Anonymousreply 143December 25, 2018 8:45 PM

More heartwarming Boomer traditions:

Under-tipping

Fighting with customer service staff and calling managers on them

Voting Republican

Capitalism

Extolling Medicare but not wanting The Government in your life

Making college kids work for you on zero hour contracts

Whining about coddled youth's entitlement when they refuse to work for you for free (something you never did at their age)

Lecturing teens they need to tolerate school shootings as a price to pay for Our Freedoms

Harassing others for using Spanish in public (there's not a Freedom for that)

Evangelical megachurches

Making gay marriage about you and your straight relationships

by Anonymousreply 144December 25, 2018 8:54 PM

^^ I see Alexandria Egypt Cortez has found her way to the DL

by Anonymousreply 145December 25, 2018 9:24 PM

I like comfortable cotton jeans.

by Anonymousreply 146December 25, 2018 9:28 PM

I think baby boomers over tip, to make up for the undertippers.

by Anonymousreply 147December 25, 2018 9:30 PM

Lot of baby boomers were war protesters and they marched for civil rights. Some of the younger boomers must be White Supremacist, assholes.

Your list is part of the greatest generation, r144. It does not seem like boomers to me.

by Anonymousreply 148December 25, 2018 9:33 PM

r147 I certainly do. I have more money than I'll ever need, no heirs, and I figure the people I tip work harder than I ever had to and need the money more than I do.

by Anonymousreply 149December 25, 2018 9:36 PM

We can another great Boomer tradition at r145: Racism and classism.

by Anonymousreply 150December 25, 2018 9:36 PM

[quote]Your list is part of the greatest generation

You know that only YOU call yourselves that, right? Which is lame as hell.

Another Boomer lamity for the list: Praising themselves and then buying into their own hype.

by Anonymousreply 151December 25, 2018 9:38 PM

I am a few years short to be a BB. But I will have a pension and a solid 401K when I retire. If that makes me uncool, then so be it.

by Anonymousreply 152December 25, 2018 9:42 PM

Boomers were born 1946 to 1964.

The people who fought WWII were called greatest generation as far as I know, I know of no other name.

by Anonymousreply 153December 25, 2018 10:20 PM

This is correct, r153.

by Anonymousreply 154December 25, 2018 10:22 PM

[quote]Your list is part of the greatest generation

The generation that made black men fight in black-only divisions and made a military-wide rule that NO white man had to salute any black man regardless of their respective ranks. WOW! No wonder Tom Brokaw loved them so much he titled his book that shitty phrase.

by Anonymousreply 155December 25, 2018 10:26 PM

Eldergays? What are hemorrhoids?

by Anonymousreply 156December 27, 2018 2:51 AM

"Meanwhile, they can impress us their actual accompishments that don’t involve self-involvement and narcissism"

A baby boomer lecturing others about narcissism? Ha!!! Bet you voted for Trump, too, just like all the other old farts

by Anonymousreply 160December 27, 2018 4:53 AM

The youth of today will perish unless they overthrow the dark Satanic mills (Iiterally and symbolically) of the United States.

by Anonymousreply 161January 6, 2019 8:14 PM

R118 Millennials use the archaic connotation of ‘idiot’, I’m told.
