In a new interview with PinkNews, the 32-year-old actor/singer says, “If anybody exists at any kind of intersection of oppression beyond the box of white male, I’d say let’s make damn sure that they’re being represented by the people who have lived this experience [and] not have people who haven’t lived the experience portraying them.” The reason, Badgley says, is pretty simple. “Because then at the end of the day you’re getting a real portrayal.”
Penn Badgley agrees with Darren Criss that straight actors should stop playing gay roles

by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 21, 2018 9:19 PM |
Penn Badgley is so hot!
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 21, 2018 9:22 PM |
Who dat bro?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 21, 2018 9:22 PM |
I disagee. If gay actors can play straight characters, then straight actors can play gay characters. This isn’t blackface.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 21, 2018 9:23 PM |
EXACTLY
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 21, 2018 9:26 PM |
R4 gay people have to live in a straight world and until they come out, act straight to avoid being outed.
Straight people don't exist in both worlds, so have no idea what it's like.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 21, 2018 9:28 PM |
Isn't this just going to decrease the amount of gay/trans content?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 21, 2018 9:28 PM |
A real portrayal? Its fucking called acting for a reason.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 21, 2018 9:31 PM |
OP, such a pathetic attempt at validating the foot-in-mouth Criss interview.
There are light years of difference. Badgley was talking about the "white male". Did he do that after making a career of playing non-white characters the way Criss has of being gay for pay? I don't think so.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 21, 2018 9:34 PM |
No, he directly says only queer people should play queer roles r9. Did you bother clicking the link before you posted that?
Asked whether only LGBTQ actors should be cast in LGBTQ roles, Badgley responds, “Yeah, I actually really like that idea, I do.”
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 21, 2018 9:36 PM |
Dumb. It’s a fucking hard industry from the beginning no matter WHO you are. Gay straight white black etc. it’s probably the toughest profession to succeed in. And the whole point is ACTING. The best actors earn the right to play whatever fucking character they want. These pussies need to shut the fuck up and stop pandering for relevance. I want the most convincing person in a role period. I don’t give a fuck who they sleep with at night. Next.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 21, 2018 9:39 PM |
Acting isn’t rocket science for Gods sake. It’s called acting because you’re playing someone you’re not in life
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 21, 2018 9:40 PM |
R10, he was talking about white men, and then was asked this as a sub-question.
“In reality, we have basically, like, privileged white people playing everybody, and so we need to stop that,” Badgley said “in theory” and in a “totally just society” any actor should be able to portray any character, but “that’s not the world we live in.” “We live in a world that does not recognize virtually anyone outside of the white male or the beautiful white woman who has to be an object of desire and affection,”
Unlike Criss, Badgley did not make a career of playing minorities before suddenly getting "woke" because of fear of typecasting.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 21, 2018 9:43 PM |
The best actors earn the right to play whatever fucking character they want.
And for some reason those actors always turn out to be straight.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 21, 2018 9:43 PM |
What are you even rambling about r13? I recognize he also talks about the race angle, but since this is a gay board, I am focusing on the gay angle.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 21, 2018 9:44 PM |
He is a hot looking but maybe he should think what to say in public.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 21, 2018 9:45 PM |
Daniel Day Lewis, Eddie Redmayne and Tom Cruise all stole roles that perfectly disabled people would have been able to perform.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 21, 2018 9:47 PM |
Acting is playing someone you arent. The skill of the actor's acting should come first right? I cast someone that is similar to the character in many ways.....oh wait they arent great actors? That's okay at least both they and their character suck dick in their free time.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 21, 2018 9:52 PM |
And I'm talking about the motivation of what was said, R15. Marked difference.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 21, 2018 9:56 PM |
[R4] gay people have to live in a straight world and until they come out, act straight to avoid being outed.
That's so true. Paul Lynde and Rip Torn had to butch it up for years. No one ever guessed they were gay.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 21, 2018 10:02 PM |
I'm only going to play middle class women from New Jersey from now on since that was my point of origin.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 21, 2018 10:07 PM |
This is not only stupid, it's dangerous.
The logical extension of this position is that gay actors should not play straight roles.
And the worst part is that many will applaud this position without realizing that it comes for an underlying homophobia.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 21, 2018 10:13 PM |
The logical extension of this position is that gay actors should not play straight roles.
Are we pretending there is no difference between marginalized groups and non-marginalized groups?
I mean what you said is no different than "if there is a black history month, why isn't there a white history month?!"
The idea behind this sentiment is you help gay actors by not letting straight actors "steal" their roles. How many gay careers could have been launched if gay actors were sought out for those parts?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 21, 2018 10:19 PM |
I mean what you said is no different than "if there is a black history month, why isn't there a white history month?!"
Really? You're going to use a false equivalency to accuse me of making a false equivalency. One of the worst unintended consequences of the recent political cycle has been the overuse of such tactics.
The idea behind this sentiment is you help gay actors by not letting straight actors "steal" their roles. How many gay careers could have been launched if gay actors were sought out for those parts?
No one is stealing any role. "To steal" implies ownership. No one "owns" any roles except the best actor for the part.
Heath Ledger was great in Brokeback. I can't think of a gay actor who would have been better - no one. I'd rather have someone like him in the role than a lesser gay actor.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 21, 2018 10:33 PM |
Maybe they need to specify "openly gay", if that's their belief. Just that there are a few more gay people who've played gay roles than is openly acknowledged. Closeted gays and open-secret gays have been doing this for years. Sean Hayes playing Jack in Will And Grace, before officially coming out, would be just one example
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 21, 2018 10:38 PM |
How would Darren Criss know about straight actors playing gay?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 21, 2018 10:42 PM |
Is Penn gay? He was looking so gaunt in You but generally he’s very pretty
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 22, 2018 1:43 AM |
R23, I doubt it would make a difference. There are plenty of working gay actors playing gay and straight roles alike. Very few are A-lister, very few have box office draw. Not being openly gay didn’t stop Kevin Spacey from getting laid or stop people from whispering about his sexuality.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 22, 2018 1:43 AM |
Why should anyone care what a straight guy thinks?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 22, 2018 3:07 AM |
Does anyone really believe Darren Criss is straight? I certainly don't.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 22, 2018 3:10 AM |

Add Shamu Schumer, Kathy Grinchin, AnnE & Natalie Portofcall, among many other phony celebridouches, to the above.
No one really respects any kind of traitor.

I can’t wait till all this SjW bullshit has finished and everyone has finally finished eating their own .
In the 1960s everyone fought to be treated as equals , now we are fighting to be treated as better than equals and biting the heads off those that fight back .
I can’t wait until all this lies on the compost heap of failures that it will surely be .
We live in the best time in society to be alive and we act as though we live in 1250 in a rural outpost. How the fuck did we come to this ?
It is fucking acting . The name says it all. Soon we will only be able to read books which have characters that mirror our own exactly.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 22, 2018 7:20 AM |
R8,don't confuse Penn with ideas.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 22, 2018 7:22 AM |
Who died and let Penn Badgley make the rules for acting?
I think you should let gay actors "play" straight, and straight actors "play" gay.
So who is right? What, is there a vote on this topic by The Academy?
And let's be honest and call this what it is: Penn making his "woke" position known to score some headlines and score some points with the SJW crowd.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 22, 2018 5:30 PM |
Are we pretending there is no difference between marginalized groups and non-marginalized groups?
The race to victimhood. Let's see how many "marginalized" categories we can tick off to see who is the winner.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 24, 2018 2:16 AM |
If the character has a big fat hot cock, the actor must, as well.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 24, 2018 8:43 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 24, 2018 9:34 AM |
We live in the best time in society to be alive
I think we're a few decades past that. Then again, I may simply be twenty-plus years older than you. Then again, no, I can't imagine anyone referring to the 21st century as "the best time in society to be alive."
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 24, 2018 9:37 AM |
R48 you need to look at an average person and think is this the worst time to be alive or the best.
As a Gay person we are largely accepted as being Gay in the West. We are able to adopt. Tell me as far as laws and being a Gay man when do you think there was a better time to be openly Gay ? Cause you he 70s had its own problems including you couldn’t marry .
by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 24, 2018 10:52 AM |
I much preferred the '70s, r49. Of course, I was in my 20s then.
The hatred I see in print/internet (I avoid all TV news) in the 21st century leads me to believe that we are at any given moment one election away from losing whatever gains have been made since the '70s. And now, "gay" is under attack from both the far right and the far left.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 24, 2018 10:58 AM |
Fuck this twaddle.
Who could have been better than Philip Seymour Hoffman in Boogie Nights?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 24, 2018 11:30 AM |
R50 I get it but from acceptance point of view now is the best time to be openly Gay. I am 50 and I see the 70s were amazing. But purely from a Rights perspective it is best now.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 24, 2018 12:14 PM |
But this basically makes it so only OUT gay actors can play gay roles and it leads to prying into an actor's personal life. Can a bisexual play a gay character? Can a gay character play a bisexual? I hate it. I think with race it's a bigger issue and straight actors should stop going after Oscar baiting gay roles but I don't think that gay roles should be exclusive to gay people. Just like I don't think straight roles should be exclusive to straight people.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 24, 2018 1:20 PM |
And it makes being gay into this weird, exotic “otherly” existence that no one but gay people can understand or convey. It makes being gay seem weird or bizarre.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 24, 2018 1:24 PM |
[italic]What[/italic] "makes being gay into" all that blah-blah, r54?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 24, 2018 1:26 PM |
Saying only gay people can play gay characters. We should be saying there is little distinction between gay or straight, not perpetuating it is some big distinction.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | December 24, 2018 1:31 PM |
Acting is acting. You can’t act color or race, but a good actor can act anything else.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | December 29, 2018 11:35 PM |
Penn Badgley is fine in my book. His cock is intact.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 29, 2018 11:45 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 59 | December 30, 2018 1:03 AM |
More racist requirements for artwork by Millenial fuckwits.
Discriminating against gay or straight people for jobs is already illegal, and rightfully so. So Penn Badgley and Darren Criss can shut the fuck up.
"It should go to a gay person" is the new, "Fuck, no! I'm not queer! I'm not going to play one!"
And if anyone really believes Darren Criss isn't against playing gay because his roles are cutting too deep into his closet, then she needs to take her hands OFF HER CLITORIS.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 30, 2018 1:26 AM |
60 - I have been waiting for a cutting comment to describe the feeling I have about the disingenuous Darren Criss. Yours wins. Any woman who can't see the truth is of the 'Twilight, 50 shades of Gray" disposition. .
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 30, 2018 1:46 AM |
But queer actors DO play queer roles. But most of the A, B and even C listers are in the closet.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 30, 2018 1:51 AM |
If we follow this logic you must be poor to play a poor person, no more Brits playing Americans or Americans playing Brits, you must be from a rural area to play a country character, you must have grown up in the "hood" to play an urban character, etc...
It is called acting, you are not meant to play out your experiences but the experiences of the character you are portraying. Sometimes actors who are portraying something that is close to their own experiences give crappy performances because they forget the character and force the character to become them.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 30, 2018 2:06 AM |
R59. Penn's father (of Penn & Teller) gave an interview railing against cutting boys' penises and how it's bullshit and plain cruel. He said he did not have his son cut, and his son was just fine.
