We're all just armchair psychologists here, but I've always noticed that when he talks about Liz, it's frequently done in terms of her essentially doing him a favor by marrying him, how lucky he is that she's so much smarter and more together than he is, how she's the engine of their family, etc. He really does seem to regard her as a superior being.
