Seems a bit unfair to choose semi-finalists this way, but I guess it guarantees representation from all around the world.

Unlike North and South America, Europe has no pageant programs; I think a lot of the girls are still voted on from photos in the newspaper or maybe online these days. So no coaches to make them slick. Top 10 was almost always Sweden, Italy, Spain, but South Africa and Phillipines were always huge. I remember a cute Miss Zaire was top 5 once but they aren't even there these days. Best was when South Africa got banned for apartheid so all the hot pageant girls ran across the border -- and Miss Namibia won the next year. I bet she didn't even know where Namibia was.

Nepal makes the cut for the first time. Vietnam makes the cut after 10 years. The longest active streaks of making the cut are Philippines (9 years), USA (8 years), Brazil (8 years), Thailand (4 years), and Canada (3 years). Colombia's streak ends at 4.

What's interesting about the 10-year South African ban (from 1985-1994) is that in 1985, Miss South Africa went to the pageant and then was sent home as other countries threatened to boycott. She then went to Germany, won their national title in 1989 and went to Miss Universe anyway.

You can tell right of the batch that Miss Philippines was born in a rich family just like most of other contestants. She’s pretty, educated and well spoken and deserves to win. Nothing is special about her and she’s totally forgettable. People prob won’t even remember her next year when the new contest takes place.

Miss Vietnam, however, comes from a poor family and had to finance her own education. She didn’t have to luxury or opportunity to learn English and therefore, she’s always being grateful to have been given such an opportunity to be there. This woman is beautiful and special and will succeed in her future endeavours.

I think posters here are confusing nationality and ethnicity. She is a 100% Philippine citizen (by nationality) and she is likely ca. half Filipino (by ethnicity). And that’s perfectly fine. Virtually all modern nations around the world are an ethnic mix, not just the US. Only places like the Third Reich insisted on ethnic ‘purity’ and 100% Aryan bloodlines (though the irony was that Adolf wasn’t even 100% German).

For example, a South African person can be 100% South African (by nationality) and half-Dutch, half-Zulu (by ethnicity).

The issue that most people here have with Philippines is that she is not really representative of the nation's people. She was sent to the pageant more so because she DOESN'T look like your typical filipina, who is usually shorter and darker.
