National Geographic recently did an article on a girl who, similarly, attempted suicide with a hunting rifle, and was later able to receive a face transplant. It doesn't look anything like her original face, but it's wonderful that doctors can restore some functionality for people, and make it more comfortable for them to go out in public.

I think there ought to be some serious gatekeeping, so that kids like the one at R16, who shot herself over a cheating high school boyfriend, can be identified and get a different kind of help. But if we're talking about an adult who has been suffering for decades on end, and has tried medication, therapy, etc. to no avail, then, yes, I think that person ought to have the option to die peacefully.

I have always thought that Artie's demons come from the fact that he is a closeted gay man who will never be able to come to terms with that given his background. I knew addicts who'd been using for ten, twenty, thirty years. I couldn't help feel sorry for them. Forgot their noses -- they had done permanent damage to their brains. They needed coke to feel *normal* (ie, not suicidally depressed), not euphoric. Long-term use will fuck you up.

I worked there 25 years ago and the reconstruction guys were amazing back then. We had a guy whose face was eaten by flesh eating bacteria before the term “flesh eating bacteria” was invented. All of the skin on his face including his eyelids, ears, nose and lips were gone. I remember asking the plastic surgery resident what happened and he told me it was a streptococcal skin infection, which surprised me because I always heard of skin infections being staphylococcus.

They worked on that guy’s face for years. They were transplanting muscles so he could move his mouth —that’s how damaged he was. Unfortunately he took his life. It was all too much for him and I don’t blame him

I kept hoping op's pic was photoshopped. i'm probably one of the few who is still pulling for him. I liked him a lot during his HS show stint .I honestly believe he is ill - mentally. No other way to explain why he is self-destructing.

The lying, the secrecy, the seeming (though not necessarily) lack of gratitude for all the chances--especially for someone like Artie who, if he had no money or had darker skin, would have been jailed a long time ago. Artie got his dream job with Stern AFTER he got a slap on the wrist for serious drug and assault charges. People who don't understand addiction and mental health issues, and even many people who do, are exhausted with frustration watching someone like that piss all his good fortune away.

People who know of Artie from Stern know his crazy stories of partying and getting into trouble from his amazing storytelling on the show. His making these stories so funny in some ways backfired--you don't hear the pain and serious problems behind the behavior. You hear the story of the crazy week he was fired from MadTV,, arrested and lost all that money gambling and think "you LUCKY bastard!" When Artie admits he tried to hit an LAPD officer while high and with coke in his pocket, Stern rightly points out if he'd been Black, he'd have been shot. At the very least Artie certainly would have never made it to the Stern show (except maybe as a wackpacker to be made fun of). From there comes the ragey frustration that he couldn't clean up his act despite his good fortune. What they don't understand is no amount of good fortune changes the way your brain functions.

I had a friend I knew for 20 years who was a hard core junkie. He did anything and everything that came his way,but preferred heroin and coke. His mother told me he had been on drugs since he was 12.His parents had moved from Michigan to Florida to get him away from "bad influences" little dreaming there were more drugs in Florida than pretty much anywhere else. He died last year from hepatitis,after a 40 year career as a devoted drug addict. We all used to wonder how in the hell he lived so long after abusing his body so much. I feel that way about Artie.

I'm reminded of an interview where Stevie Nicks was talking about the height of Fleetwood Mac, the Rumours Tour in 1977-1978. The group was doing so much cocaine that they had a large shared bag of it floating around. Stevie was apparently told that if she didn't stop snorting it she would do permanent damage to her nose - it was one thing which put her on the road to getting cleaned up.
