radar detector

I just got my third speeding ticket in two years. Each one of these ends up costing me close to $500 (I live in California). I've decided to get a radar detector for my car. Anyone here have one? Recommendations?

by Anonymousreply 69December 18, 2018 2:35 AM

Download the Waze app on your phone dumb dumb

by Anonymousreply 1December 13, 2018 4:03 PM

Fucking go the speed limit dumbass.

by Anonymousreply 2December 13, 2018 4:04 PM

A speeding fool and her money are soon parted.

by Anonymousreply 3December 13, 2018 4:05 PM

And you still didn't learn your lesson. Not a hint ?

by Anonymousreply 4December 13, 2018 4:20 PM

As someone who was almost killed by someone speeeding, fuck you OP. Shove the radar detector right up your ass.

by Anonymousreply 5December 13, 2018 4:20 PM

And you get busted if you have open beer in the car....

by Anonymousreply 6December 13, 2018 4:20 PM

Waze will tell you if a police car is reported ahead.

by Anonymousreply 7December 13, 2018 4:24 PM

OP, slow down and follow the speed limit. You wasted $1,500.00 for speeding. Are you crazy?? You could have killed others or yourself. Grow up, and give yourself plenty of time for travel. Do you want another $500 fine and the suspension of your driver’s license?

by Anonymousreply 8December 13, 2018 4:32 PM

I'm happy you were ticketed multiply times. You deserve it. Keep on losing money, fucktard! Remember that, hon.

by Anonymousreply 9December 13, 2018 4:33 PM

In some states, a radar detector is illegal. The police will reach in and test if it’s warm, indicating that it was on, if they see it. Too much trouble for me.

My last ticket was about 2 years ago, and my insurance went up. But still.

by Anonymousreply 10December 13, 2018 4:35 PM

Save your money for the tickets. In urban areas it'll drive you insane with all the false alarms, and the new radar guns give you so little warning that the cop already has you nailed by the time the detector goes off. Besides, a cop spots one on your dash (or sees you fumbling around hiding it) and you're fucked for sure.

by Anonymousreply 11December 13, 2018 4:40 PM

People drive like animals here in southern ca.. In all my years of driving on the freeways never once have I seen any of the monsters that think they are in a video game get pulled over. Because of that. The problem has gotten worse over the years. If there is no repercussion than why would they stop. That an all the asshole, mostly fraus on their phones make my blood boil when driving. Stop speeding you asshat.

by Anonymousreply 12December 13, 2018 4:43 PM

What's the big rush? In most cities nowadays, you can do about 80 and the cops don't really care. You don't need to go so fast, it's not safe for you or the others on the highway. I drive too fast and I can tell you, if you got 3 tickets in 2 years, you're pushing your luck.

by Anonymousreply 13December 13, 2018 4:44 PM

lol i imagine the OP really appreciates the help! Mary!!

by Anonymousreply 14December 13, 2018 4:48 PM

What do you drive? Seriously, is it a red Porsche or something? No way you're drawing that much attention unless the car is triggering them.

by Anonymousreply 15December 13, 2018 4:49 PM

Why are they even sold?

by Anonymousreply 16December 13, 2018 5:16 PM

OP here. I drive a BMW. And 2 of the 3 tickets I got were in 40 mph zones.

Oh, and btw....to all of you who responded so nastily....fuck you.

by Anonymousreply 17December 13, 2018 5:51 PM

OK, the BMW isn't the problem, certainly not in SoCal. How fast were you actually going in these 40 zones? Not what he wrote the ticket for, real honest to God speed?

by Anonymousreply 18December 13, 2018 6:08 PM

BMW + California license plate = BIGGEST DOUCHEBAGS ON THE ROAD

by Anonymousreply 19December 13, 2018 6:14 PM

To get three tickets in two years means you are a terrible driver OP. But sure, it is everyone's fault except for yours.

by Anonymousreply 20December 13, 2018 6:16 PM

OP, if you are speeding in a 40mph zone, you are double the asshole you appear to be. SLOW THE FUCK DOWN.

by Anonymousreply 21December 13, 2018 6:18 PM

"My BMW draws applause, I am not bound by traffic laws"

You are well known, OP.

This line is from "Car and Driver' by the late, great Bill Morrissey.

by Anonymousreply 22December 13, 2018 6:20 PM

The cop ticketed me for 60 mph because I was very polite, but I was actually going 66.

by Anonymousreply 23December 13, 2018 6:25 PM

How nice for you, R23/OP. This makes you look so much better....a polite asshole.

by Anonymousreply 24December 13, 2018 6:27 PM

I actually feel for OP. I live in a more rural area, and a lot of the speed limits are 50 mph or lower. During the day when people are out, driving a speed around the posted limit is wise; often, you can't actually drive any faster due to there being others out. But when it's 11:00 pm and there's no one out, I don't think a person should get a ticket for going 5-10 miles over on a deserted road.

With that said, to the extent that OP's decision to get a radar detector is to go unreasonably fast (OP just posted 66 in a 40, yikes!), that's a disaster waiting to happen. I like getting places faster and enjoy not being encumbered by rules just as much as the next guy. But there is a point where speeds are far too dangerous. I recall one evening I was out late, I was speeding down one of the afore-mentioned country roads trying to get home as I was tired. All of a sudden I had to slam on my brakes. I came over a hill and spotted a man lying in the road, directly in my path. He had passed out from drinking. I actually wasn't able to stop in time, but rather was able to avoid him by swerving over into the other lane. Ever since then, I've definitely watched my speed. One of the scariest things that has ever happened to me.

by Anonymousreply 25December 13, 2018 6:36 PM

Most of the tickets I've received over the years are stupid ones in those 35 to 40 mph zones. I'd get a 40 in a 35, a 45 in a 40--always by local cops. I once got a 37 in a 35. I was like, "Are you serious?" Worst part of that one was I had just been passed by someone in the right lane obviously going faster than 37. The cop was a total fucking prick. He really tried to engage me in a fight. I just sat there, didn't engage in his prodding, and said please give me the ticket. He finally got frustrated, went back to his car and wrote the ticket. I went to court and got out of the ticket because the prick cop didn't show. I told the judge how the cop acted, and the judge said that was pretty well known.

As for speeding on the freeway, a state cop told me long ago that I could go 79 in a 70 and usually be safe, particularly on a major freeway. Toward the end of the month, though, he recommended going 77 or under in a 70 because of quotas on tickets. He said the wild card was always the local sheriffs who may nail you for a 71 in a 70 being the douches they are. I've followed that advice and haven't had a ticket on the freeway in years.

by Anonymousreply 26December 13, 2018 6:42 PM

And always remember that a radar detector only detects when the radar is turned on, not that a patrol car is near.

by Anonymousreply 27December 13, 2018 6:47 PM

Fuck you right back, OP!

Thanx! Have a nice day, loser!

by Anonymousreply 28December 13, 2018 6:50 PM

I used to get a LOT of tickets when the speed limit was 55 and I lived in the Midwest (Crossing Nebraska at 55mph? Who do I write the check to, Officer?) Now that the limit is back at 70 or 75 (80 in South Dakota!) it's not a problem anymore.

by Anonymousreply 29December 13, 2018 6:54 PM

Oh, you pearl clutching Mary's, and your silly believe that 'speed kills'. It's nothing more than a corrupt road tax.

As for radar detectors, I have an older Passport 5000. But, in the country I live now, I don't need it, as 'speed traps' don't exist. Or are very rare, and the roads in such bad condition and congested, it's usually not possible to ever 'speed'. There are videos on You Tube reviewing radar detectors, check them out. A built in unit is best. However, for laser, unless you get a signal from a car ahead, your radar detector will only tell you you've been beamed.

I drive a lot for my job. I currently have the Uniden R3 which is rated the best Radar Detector. You also cannot go wrong with an Escort. Be sure to get one that filters out traffic radar (the false alerts). The Uniden one is more customizable than the Escort. The other thing to note is if you are getting caught by laser then radar will do nothing. For full protection, you would want to invest in a laser jammer system which the good ones will run in the thousands of dollars. The other part is common sense. In high traffic areas don't be the leader of the pack. Let some other asshole get the ticket. If you are solo in a long stretch and don't have laser jamming go a speed you are comfortable with jamming the breaks on. Waze also is a good app to use since it incorporates people reporting speed traps.

by Anonymousreply 34December 13, 2018 7:25 PM

I want to know where you are California that you can even drive the limit. Last night it took me 30 minutes to go less than two miles.

Usually, the people demanding ridiculously low speed limits, and overzealous enforcement, are the same people that should have hung up their keys years ago.

Like I said I drive a lot for a living and it has saved my ass. It is hardwired to my mirror so no cord dangling down. It has a silent mode through the city so it is quite below a certain speed. It has a red light camera and speed camera database with a GPS installed. I have a friend who calls me Fonzi because of it (I don't get it but he is fucking stupid so..) then he get a 500 dollar speeding ticket. He called me to ask me which one I had. Like I said you still have to be smart, you can't go 200 miles an hour like you are fucking invincible but knowing where the cops are, getting that 10-15 minute warning will make up for the cost of it. Just remember nothing detects a Laser fast enough but the lasers are really expensive so most police only have one or two.

by Anonymousreply 42December 13, 2018 9:45 PM

Waste of money. And it's a known fact that people with radar detectors get just as many tickets as people without one. The cops don't have to clock you on radar to give you a ticket for driving in excess of the speed limit. If they observe you doing it and it's obvious you're driving too fast they can still give you a ticket and they'll win in court. If you don't want to get speeding tickets then DON'T SPEED!

by Anonymousreply 43December 13, 2018 9:46 PM

r43 not true. You can challenge a ticket with no radar. It is simple math. "You were driving above the speed limit." "What speed was I going." "Ummmm fast?"

by Anonymousreply 44December 14, 2018 1:11 AM

OP sorry I just can't relate to your problem, my last speeding ticket was in 1973.

by Anonymousreply 45December 14, 2018 2:09 AM

get out of the fast lane, grandpa's.

by Anonymousreply 46December 14, 2018 2:33 AM

Use Waze. And after THREE tickets you have got to know the habits of officers in the area. Otherwise you just have money to blow on tickets and traffic lawyers.

Obey the speed limit in areas where officers have a ton of hiding spaces to park their cruisers and use radar. Officers love to hide over a hill, after the bend of a curved road, or just past an overpass so you can't see them on your approach. Obey the speed limit on residential streets. Obey the speed limit during daylight hours when they are more likely to see you. Don't be the leader, as someone mentioned. Just simple things to avoid detection.

by Anonymousreply 47December 14, 2018 2:35 AM

I've had 2 close relatives survive speed-related car crashes.

Please, please, please go the speed limit. OP!

by Anonymousreply 48December 14, 2018 2:47 AM

R48 - All collisions are 'speed-related'. If an object isn't moving, it can't crash. So, just what do you mean? Someone was exceeding the posted speed limit, or someone was driving recklessly fast?

Speed is only a factour is less than 18% of crashes, although the police reports almost automatically tick the 'speed' box to justify their revenue scam. And of course, factour is not the same as cause. Collisions caused by reckless speed are actually very rare.

Driving slow is not necessarily driving safely. I'd rather have some 30 year old driving his Porsche 'briskly', than some dementia addled old man or woman driving at or below the speed limit.

R46 - It's the 'passing' lane, not the 'fast' lane, and you should never occupy it, unless you are passing. Of course during heavy traffic, all the lanes get occupied, but, when traffic isn't in gridlock, stay to the right. And the prissy gramps at this site, shouldn't even think of going over there. No gramps, because you drive at or below the speed limit does not make you a good driver. The collision statistics for seniors is dismal. Maybe that should be more of a priority than handing out speeding tickets - get the old farts off the road.

by Anonymousreply 49December 14, 2018 3:25 AM

R49 Each driver was recklessly driving way over the speed limit. One couldn't stop in time at the red light and hit my relative. Another hit black ice and swerved into the other lane and hit my other relative. Now they're each facing several abdominal and spinal surgeries and being disabled and unable to work.

by Anonymousreply 50December 14, 2018 3:43 AM

r49/Jan,

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 51December 14, 2018 3:44 AM

R49 you're an ass. In a crash, the severity of injuries increases dramatically depending on the speed of a driver—a pedestrian hit at 30 mph has a 60 percent chance of survival, while someone hit at 40 mph only has a 40 percent chance of living.

Drunk driving and speeding have a lot in common, as the NTSB’s report highlights. Like someone driving under the influence, a driver who is speeding increases both the likelihood of being in a crash and also the likelihood that someone in or near that person’s car will be killed or seriously injured.

The study looked at U.S. passenger vehicle crashes from 2005 to 2014 and found that speeding was the main factor in 112,580 deaths, or about 31 percent of all traffic fatalities.

by Anonymousreply 52December 14, 2018 4:34 AM

R50 - OK, thanks for the clarification. But, both cases were reckless driving, which is different than driving a reasonable and safe speed that is usually higher than the posted speed limit. No one is advocating that driving recklessly is acceptable, or trying to eliminate speed limits (although that is possible on some roads),

The two key things to understand are the Solomon curve, and 85th percentile. And governments not interested in traffic safety. but addicted to the revenue from 'speeding'. Google 'does speed kill', but ignore the links from the people/enterprises with a financial motive to perpetuate that line. Like insurance companies.

R52 - OK, let's all drive at the only safe speed - 0.

by Anonymousreply 53December 14, 2018 4:39 AM

R52 - As mentioned above, police routinely, and almost automatically indicate 'speed' as a factour/cause in collision reports. And this is reflected in that study.

I'm a police magnet. As an example, I was driving on a two-lane highway on Whidbey Island, curvy road, impossible to pass. I was the last in a long line of cars for about 10 miles. I came over a hill, all the cars ahead of me sailing along, when a policeman there pulled me over. (Sudden speed reduction from 55 to 45 at that point). Why? Because it was much easier to pull over the LAST car in a line there than the first. Another time, I was crossing the San Mateo bridge in Ca. I was again at the end of a long line of cars, when someone flew by me like I was standing still, at least 90 mph. I looked down to check my speedometer which was 65, and looked up to see an officer pointing the radar gun at me. She followed me, siren whirring across the entire bridge until there was a place to pull over. She said, "The radar alarmed me that you were going 87 mph". I said, "no, you clocked the guy who passed me going 87 - I was going 65, which granted, was 10 miles over the speed limit but the speed of traffic since I was the end of the line of cars". Fortunately, she gave me a warning - the one on Whidbey, no such luck.

by Anonymousreply 59December 14, 2018 7:03 AM

OP here. Thanks to those of you who responded civilly. I'll clarify that I live in California but I got one ticket in Arizona, one in New Mexico, and one in California (LA) on my way to work. Two of them were in 40 mph zones and one of them was on the highway just outside of Flagstaff AZ (The speed limit was 70 and I was going 90....ok....I deserved that one.)

by Anonymousreply 60December 16, 2018 5:35 PM

Helpful Hint - don't exceed the posted speed limit. (seems to be a hard concept for BMW drivers to grasp)

by Anonymousreply 61December 16, 2018 5:45 PM

OP LEASED HER BMW. $399 per month with $5K down. Dumbest bitch on the planet.

by Anonymousreply 62December 16, 2018 5:47 PM

The "dumbest bitch on the planet" would be you, r62, who makes shit up and posts it as fact.

by Anonymousreply 63December 16, 2018 5:50 PM

BMWs are made for going fast. If you're a good driver, there's nothing wrong with that except the pesky speeding ticket that drains one's wallet.

by Anonymousreply 64December 16, 2018 5:51 PM

Make sure they are legal where you live.

by Anonymousreply 65December 16, 2018 6:02 PM

Is R63 the OP or another dumb ass who leases instead of buys?

by Anonymousreply 66December 16, 2018 6:02 PM

I'd rather have a gaydar detector.

by Anonymousreply 67December 16, 2018 6:38 PM

R66 If it's a German or British car, leasing is the smart way to drive these things. After two or three years, return them, and let the next fool who buys them deal with their problems.

by Anonymousreply 68December 17, 2018 6:44 PM

r68 actually buying a cpo late model luxury is the best way to go. I got a CPO Jaguar XF with a 7 year 100000 mile bumper to bumper.
