[Quote]"My Favorite Things" isn't a Christmas carol.
Well, it's a Christmas song NOW, r25, and this article explains how it happened.
Julie Andrews, coincidentally, first sang it on a Garry Moore Christmas special in 1961 (way before the movie was made with her in mind).
Later, Jack Jones included it in his popular 1964 Christmas album. Shortly thereafter, it was recorded by The Supremes, Andy Williams, and Eddie Fisher on their respective Christmas albums. Then Barbra Streisand recorded it for hers.
Of course, the immense popularity of The Sound of Music movie made the song very familiar with everyone in North America, making it an easily recognizable song that's now associated with Christmas.

by Anonymous | reply 157 | December 16, 2018 4:56 PM |
My three favorites:
"The Little Drummer Boy"--I love the starkness of the song and how it really travels in its own lane. There's no other X-mas song quite like it.
I second R13's choice of "I Wander As I Wonder" by Vanessa Williams--a gorgeous song, sung beautifully, with immaculate production. An extraordinary rendition, really. Bonus points to VM for the most beautiful Christmas album cover in history.
The supreme drama of "Do You Hear What I Hear" by Whitney Houston.
And while not explicitly a Christmas song, I adore Oleta Adam's "Window of Hope" and it possesses a Christmas feeling to me because it is about the necessity of hope and the power of keeping faith (and I'm an atheist!). It is truly a joyous and uplifting song. I am attaching the video; please check it out (you won't regret it, I promise!). And Oleta looks just as gorgeous as she sounds in this performance.
Also, I'd like to mention what I consider the best melancholy, sad X-mas songs:
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" "Merry Christmas, Darling" by the Carpenters
and because I'm a New Wave baby,
"The Christmas Song" by The Waitresses "Do They Know It's Christmas" by Band Aid
Lastly, among recent Christmas releases, my favorite is Mary J.'s version "This Christmas".

This is a fun thread to me, since I have fond memories of the Christmas music that filled our house every holiday growing up.
We had all the perennials (Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Brenda Lee) and then one year — my guess is 1969 (yes, I’m old) my mother brought home at least a dozen Christmas records, and an impressive, eclectic mix it was. I think she was trying to cover all her bases with everyone in the family. There was Frank Sinatra (represented twice, once in his own, and a second album with his children,) Dean Martin, Barbra Streisand, Johnny Cash, The Supremes, John Davidson (so handsome on the album cover!) Lena Horne, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Peggy Lee, The Ventures, and (gulp) Wayne Newton.
That last choice caused my mom no end of ridicule from my older siblings, and the album remained sealed in its shrink wrap and never played.
A few years ago, I saw this video on YouTube, and gave the song a listen for the first time. The graphic looks like it may be a repackaging, since the album we had featured different cover art and was the album from the 60s,was titled after this song. Yes, it’s Wayne Newton, and my favorite holiday song remains Nat King Cole’s version of “The Christmas Song”, but this isn’t bad!
