My mom had a VERY obese friend like this who went into a Hospital - run program to lose weight. Behavioral health therapy was MANDATORY for all the patients as they found that trauma/addiction was at the root of most of these patients weight issues. I'm happy to say my mom's friend lost a couple hundred pounds and has kept it off all these ( 20 some) years. It’s shocking to see someone who is so big. All of the worst thoughts and cliches immediately come to mind when seeing an obese person. And many times, the immediate response, is being repulsed.

Then I moved across the country, to the South. I can genuinely say that I rarely saw, or see, obese people in LA or NYC. But here, it’s very common.

What I have seen is that it truly begins in childhood. Fat parents will more than likely raise a fat child. Kids out here are huge by the time they’re 10. Once that happens, it’s pretty much over, and there’s no going back.

People in the communities that I’ve observed, are undereducated or barely educated. They do not go to schools that focus on nutrition or healthy eating and exercise, because the public schools have been stripped of funding, so there isn’t PE class, or health and nutrition class. I am not exaggerating this in any way.

So the kids here just eat very poorly. They eat what their parents eat, which is often fast foods. There is one major street next to the highway that I take to go to school. This street is almost all exclusively fast food restaurants. All drive throughs, and they are always packed, with 4-8 cars idling, while the passengers are waiting for their food. A 45 year old man walked into the local Walmart a few weeks ago, grabbed his shopping cart, filled it all up with crap, and died of a heart attack, as he was paying for it. Dropped dead, just like that. And yes, he was obese.

People who workout out here, and eat healthy, and stay thin, are mostly transplants from other states, and/or have a college education. The rest of the people here are all about church, football, and obscene amount of beef on their grills, beer, and trucks.

So imagine growing up like this. No one around you tells you that you have a food problem, because everyone else eats like you, and looks like you. There’s no real, social pressure or incentive to change.
