You realize watching this interview that Andrea’s take on Tina was an absolute performance. I think because it was so vampy and over the top, people thought they were one and the same. Clearly, Andrea is a poised, serious, intelligent woman. Tina was all wiggle and sex and scheming. She was underrated in hindsight.

So many great memories of years watching OLTL....some awful plots, some great ones...some wonderful actors, some horrible ones. The men were classically handsome until they brought in the super-roided ones -- fun to look at, but like cotton candy...tasty but no nutrition.

Maybe it had to do with the timeframe where I was really into the ABC soaps (early eighties), but OLTL was never my favorite. Occasionally there would be some fun moments, but I never got drawn in like I did with GH (Diana Taylor murder, Susan Moore murder) or AMC (Silver's arrival). But I always did prefer the mystery storylines, and maybe OLTL didn't focus on those as much.

She was from a European family and expected fellow actresses to respect her heritage. Most of the women she worked with were from Brooklyn and Slee would often talk about dinner parties where her parents hosted heads of state and the royalty of the film world. Doris Belack and Pat Roe just couldn't handle that.

I remember the writers had Sloan Carpenter refer to Jason as having a "girlish look."

I thought Jason was an interesting character. Mark Brettschneider wasn't your typical soap hunk, but was sexy in his own way. He wasn't that experienced as an actor, but he did have some talent too.

If Kate Collins had played Victoria Lord, she would have brought sex appeal to the role.

Everyone's talking about Slez having no sex appeal but there was something highly sexual about those pitted prune commercials she did... the way she described them as "fresh, moist and plump" with such longing, maybe the show should have made Slez a lez!

Our idea of Tina and Gabrielle is so bound up with the 80s, how would have Andrea and Fiona's performances been informed by the tastes of the 90s? Remember, Fiona ended up going to Guiding Light and only got to play high glamor storylines for a year or two before they paired her up with the town hick and moved her into a greasy diner.

When Tina and Gabrielle had to be roomies during house arrest for the baby switch storyline - every day was gay boy heaven. At that point, Tina had been somewhat de-fanged and was somewhat sub to Gabrielle’s alpha. Those two characters were amazing and the actresses had amazing chemistry.

I actually really liked Fiona's 2001 return. I thought Gabrielle fit in nicely. Did they fuck up a lot of aspects? Sure. But the Holdens could have worked. Max and Gabrielle were still viable players, even if they weren't a couple. And Al was working better too. That whole time when they had to be disposed of to make for Greaston and another god awful insta-family was horrible.

Christine Jones as Viki had a brisk, angelic quality while droopy old Slee sauntered around in clothes too many sizes too big - and she still looked fat. Viki deserved the kind of actress Jones was. Elegant. Slee was likely to clear the set with one of her prune farts.

I know that Robert S. Woods and HBS had a falling out at some point in the 90's, and that he didn't want to be paired with her anymore. This was around the time of JFP as producer, and that is why Bo and Nora were split. RSW also resisted a reunion for a long time, which is why the show had Bo "play the field" with so many women in the years follwing that. But with the show in decline towards the end, he finally agreed to be paired with HBS again.

Frons was gunning for a lot of vets, I remember. OLTL was actually the only one of the three which got to keep a good backbone of vets.

RSW always hated that HBS/Nora was basically the alpha/focus in the relationship, and HBS was a definite shit stirrer for a number of years. So it was a mix of a lot of things.

Fiona Hutchison was robbed of an Emmy nomination for the storyline with Al's death. Gabrielle's grief was so raw and real.

This was... DEVASTATING.

They were all very good in that story, but it was so unnecessary to kill off Al and decimate that family. And then bringing "Al" back as the McBane brother. They were basically giving he middle finger to fans.

Frons' micromanagement at that time was epic. He was handing directives left and right. I know Malone2 gets a lot of heat and rightfully so, but no writer could function properly under those conditions.

I've always felt if Gabrielle hadn't left in '91, she probably would have had Alex's storylines with Carlo and Asa. Fiona was certainly wasted on Guiding Light!

I loved the few exchanges Blair and Gabrielle had because they both caused the most havoc on the show in their peak eras. Blair was a bitch but Gabrielle was much more complicated... not necessarily a villainess, just a desperate woman who would do underhanded things and probably the most complex character the show ever had.

I hated Frons interference at the time r180, but let's be honest, Malone wrote some horrible shit during his second time as HW as well.

The only thing I remember about OLTL is how ABC gave Jacquie Courtney whatever she wanted. If JC asked for it, she got it. The perks in her contract were very nice. JC ran that set, until they hired Paul Rauch who wouldn't take the job unless JC was fired before he got there. I always thought it was strange that they would fire the star of the show for a producer. Rauch was a good producer, but there were other good producers out there at the time. Slezak completely owes her rise on that show to Rauch.

If Rauch would not have been hired, JC would have remained on the show and you just have to wonder what that would have meant for Slezak. Funny how things work out.

Fiona was another actress who had chem with everyone. She worked so well with Howarth, Slezak, and Woods in addition to JdP.

It was a shame what they did to Gabrielle, but no one aside from Slezak, Strasser and Lucci were off limits at that time. I still remember how AMC basically disposed of Julia Barr without skipping a beat. Horrible.

The Julia Barr situation was a travesty. It was just cruel. Frons had a target on David Canary's back too, but McTavish and Agnes intervened. They should've done the same for Barr, who IMO was more valuable to the show. Regarding HBS, she said at the time that, given how little story she had and that the over-40 women on the other ABC were being canned right and left, she was literally shocked that her contract was renewed. I wonder what went on behind the scenes to keep her with the show, because at one point it looked like she about out the door.

I think Frons/Guza's vision for the show was Sonny/Jason/mob and Luke. If they weren't able to shoehorn anyone into those orbits, and especially if they were a woman over 40, they were either let go or saw their airtime drastically reduced.

Fiona was fabulous for the first two years at GL, and then they wrote her into a corner.

Still can't believe Nathaniel Marston is dead. He was one of the most interesting actors on daytime, especially when he was first on As The World Turns. Kinda like Tom Pelphrey. Unconventional, but damn, the lights were on and someone was actually HOME during the performances.

Frons was one of the worst things to happen to soaps. In his defense, I think he was well intentioned at first, with a mandate from above to make these shows more contemporary. But he wound up just gutting them from top to bottom. AMC suffered the worst.

I honestly think Frons tried to listen to fans in the beginning. After all, he was the one who brought back Robin Strasser after fans had been asking for years after JFP left.

What Frons did to these shows was unforgivable. I understand that he needed to make them more contemporary to appeal to a younger audience, but the fact is that young people aren't going to tune in no matter what. Soaps were considered dinosaurs when he took over. He wound up making these shows unrecognizable trying to chase a nonexistent demo, and ruined their legacies in the process.

It was the early JFP period. R250 seems to know the exact specifics better than I do. It was the reason I watched again. He called her "the best EP I have ever worked with" at some point. I don't think he wanted the time commitment that being a full-time HW would have meant.

Frons became head of NBC Daytime in March 1983. Immediately prior to that, he had been head of CBS Daytime for about 5 years.

Pat Falken Smith returned to Days as HW in fall 1981, but was gone by summer 1982 due to a contract dispute. Falken Smith had been HW of GH during the 1980 Luke and Laura love-on-the-run storyline and wrote the beginning of the Ice Princess storyline.

It Falken Smith who began morphing Days into GH 2.0. It started with the casting of Thaao Penghlis as Tony DiMera in fall 1981. Thaao was fresh off his stint as Victor Cassadine on GH, so it was natural way to begin the transformation.

Things accelerated when Stefano DiMera arrived in Salem in Feb 1982. Stefano was clearly modeled after Mikos Cassadine except without the weather machine or plans for world domination.

As for the working class Brady family, Roman first appeared in Dec. 1981, followed soon after by Kayla. Bo arrived in Salem until April 1983. About that same time, the Brady parents, Shawn and Caroline showed up. Frank Parker played Shawn, a role almost identical to his GH role of Paddy Kelly who ran Kelly's Diner with his wife Rose.

So, by the time Frons arrived at NBC in March 1983, the Days transformation was already well underway. But since the ratings were on the rise, Frons obviously encouraged the show to continue to become GH 2.0.

And yes, it was Frons who insisted the show focus on younger characters, especially Bo and Hope, at the expense of the older characters, especially Doug and Julie.

My sources told me at the time that everyone loved Christine Jones. Agnes used to weep out of joy when she watched Christine on screen, because here, finally, was the Viki she had created which had all but disappeared when Gillian Spencer vacated the role. Many cast members were hoping that Slee was going to make her maternity leave permanent. So many tears were shed at Christine's going-way party. Even her best pal Vicky Wyndham from AW showed up at the party to lend Christine support.

Well, not to defend Frons, but Generations was a piece of garbage and Port Charles just never really took off. Both were low rated and would've been canceled no matter who was in charge. Search was a dinosaur on both networks, and was just a complete failure in NBC, no matter how contemporary they tried to make it. AMC and OLTL were salvageable, but not worth the cost.

Deidre was free as she had just been fired from DAYS the previous year (LOL), Lucci found out about it and signed on immediately!

All the soap blogs at the time reported that it was basically "in the bag" that Deidre was gonna sign a contract with AMC...

But they couldn't even bother to keep Viki's own sons on the canvas, so why would they mine any other history? Instead you had characters like McBANE, Rex, Fords, etc with no real connections, thus continually jumping through hoops to make them relevant.

When DAYS premiered in 1965, Julie was the first modern and realistic teenager on the soaps, also in a 1975 People magazine profile, Agnes Nixon admitted to watching DAYS everyday to "keep up with the competition and because it's a really good show", Bill Bell was DAYS headwriter at the time

The Rachel from AW influence is there too in early Erica, but Nixon was involved in the early years of AW so again, a connection

The evolution of classic soap female bad girls started with Meg (bad sister) on Love of Life to Lisa (bad wife and mother) on ATWT to Rachel (same as Lisa), Julie on Days and Erica on AMC. Lisa, Rachel and Erica were cut from the same cloth. Lorie on Y&R and Augusts on General Hospital were Meg disciples.

Agnes Nixon wrote the bible for All My Children in the 60s, but couldn't sell it to a network, so she put it away. She was hired to be the headwriter of Another World and used story from her AMC bible on that show. While Rachel showed up on screen first, Erica was actually created first. Erica and Rachel are basically the same character with similar backstories. Julie was a troubled teen, but different from both Erica and Rachel. Erica and Rachel were maneaters from day 1 and both wanted better lives in Hollywood. Julie had different motivations.

As R534 notes, All My Children's bible was actually the basis for Rachel on AW. Agnes was hired there in late 1965. She'd submitted AMC's bible to P&G and I believe CBS was going to air it, but passed at the last minute.

She used some of the story ideas re: Erica for Rachel. Meanwhile, she lost the AMC bible- she thought she'd lost it on a vacation - and when ABC hired her away to create a show, she created One Life to Live. It was only after she'd turned that into the network and it was airing that they asked her if she'd create another show, and she found the AMC bible.

You can see the obvious parallels between Ada/Rachel and Mona/Erica. Supposedly, a young Susan Lucci was told before starting on AMC to watch Strasser on AW as "training" so if Robin has issues with her, they're kind of merited, to be honest.

Face it - a lot of people never wanted Lucci to win, not because it would keep interest and her streak alive, but because they personally didn't like her p.r. campaign and notoriety. Those same folks loved Slee because she was not an obvious p.r. whore and she seemed to exude family values. Slee represented home and hearth.

Dano was obviously a Slee supporter. Graciously failed as a co-nominee in '96, but is exultantly pleased that Slee won. A couple of years later she got that extended ABC role that aired the day after Another World finished.

I always loved Linda Dano's NY apartment with the fabulous wrap around garden terrace. Just like a place Felicia Gallant would have lived in.

It's not about Slezak taking her name out so Lucci could win, it's about Slezak taking her name out so other daytime actresses had a chance for recognition. There comes a time when you have won enough and actually want to see others get their accolades.

AMC was considered the most sophisticated soap. Social issues and drawing room drama. I love OLTL too, but even I know AMC was the critical favorite in its aggregate. The only time OLTL was better reviewed was in the Karen Wolek prostitution storyline. And maybe the Marty rape.

Erika Slezak would be fine with it, because at the end of the day the less time she spent at the studio the better. She liked acting, and brought home the bacon but she really wanted to be a full-time mom. So her idea situation would be to work two days a week and only have one line. Slezak was the show's leading lady by default. Let's be honest, if Rauch wouldn't have demanded JC be fired, JC would have remained the star for the rest of the show.

As for Slezak's Emmys. She did some good work and was a known as a good actress. So when the panels were going over the reels, they probably glossed over the few instances of hammy stuff and the scenery chewing because she was a proven performer. Basically a Slezak reel got extra credits points just for being in the batch which meant some other deserving actress' reel didn't get the attention it really deserved.

Why are you coming for me R576? I acknowledged that Slezak is a good actress. All I was saying is that these people don't have time to watch the other shows, so they would see a reel from someone like Slezak, a proven quality performer, and just move that to the top of the pile because it was a Slezak reel. Which means that some other reel, may not get the same attention or careful consideration which put them at a disadvantage. We've heard the stories about the judging panels and how they operate.

Do you really think Lucci was getting nominated every year because of her excellent work. No. She was nominated because of the PR aspects of her nomination, which meant that some other deserving actress missed a slot.

Slezak's tapes were always top notch, regardless of "hammy" performances throughout the year. The simple fact is that her reels were better than the competition. She knew how to choose the right tapes.

Slee was just fine as an Anna Craig type go-to character to listen to peoples' problems, which was her main function til Rauch arrived. She was pure ham when given drama as Viki. As Niki she was beyond awful. She couldn't sell the cartoonish writing.

Slee was not kind to the ingenue Kathy Glass. She was envious of the youthful and pretty Miss Glass, who was given hunky bfs and romantic storylines, while she, the same age as Miss Glass, was thrown into the age/peer group of Jim and Anna Craig, Sadie, etc and was relegated to talk-to character.

I just think other characters like Tina, Megan, and Gabrielle were more interesting than Viki when I was watching OLTL in the late 80s/early 90s.

Slee looked 72 in 1972. What's that about? Does she have some sort of condition that makes her look so much older than her actual age?

The way they dressed Viki, plus Slestack's hairstyle are what made her look so matronly and old, even in the 1970s when she was in her late 20s/early 30s.

Here's a photo taken shortly after she joined the show in 1971, when she was 25. She looks fairly young and vibrant.

I'm not a Slee hater, but I'm not infatuated with her, I found her acting to be a bit much at times, and I think the snobs that believe she's in another stratosphere from Lucci are deluded. Having said that, she was under no obligation to remove herself from the Emmy awards, and good for her for racking up as many as she could.
