I don't think they were ever estranged. It's just that Oprah's grandmother mostly raised her in WI and then she got sent down south to be raised by her dad. It wasn't your ideal mother/daughter relationship.
I think they got a bit closer in the 90s.
Her mom seemed to be close with her grandchildren. I think there was a relationship with Oprah as well. I'm quite sure she didn't die in poverty.

They made have reached a truce, but they did not get along. So much so that she had to live with her strict father.
Oprah said her mom once told her she was switchin', like twitching her ass too much when she walked.
O wasn't close enough to anyone enough to report that her relatives were molesting her.
