There Will Be Blood

I just watched it again for probably the first time since its premiere in 2007. Damn, what a great film. It was beat by No Country for Old Men for Best Picture at the Oscars, but I prefer TWBB. I didn’t realize that Paul Dano was originally only hired to play Paul and played his brother Eli as well after the original actor was replaced. He and Daniel Day-Lewis played off each other so well.

Any other fans?

"You're just the afterbirth, Eli"

One of the greatest movies ever made, that’s for sure.

Have you seen Phantom Thread? It's a very different film but it's still Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis and pretty great. TWBB is fantastic from start to finish, I try to watch it every year or so with someone who hasn't seen it and they're always completely taken with it.

Great soundtrack.

R3, yes, Phantom Thread is great as well. PTA and DDL were meant to make movies together.

I love that movie too. Fun fact, TWBB and NCFOM are frequently mixed up as being the same movie. Also too films were shot at the same time literally just a few miles from each other.

I find that really fascinating.

Hate it with the heat of a thousand suns. Phantom Thread is horrible as well.

by Anonymousreply 7November 24, 2018 10:19 PM

R4, yes, the soundtrack was fantastic. And for me that’s part of what makes TWBB such a stronger film than Boogie Nights (which was a very solid PTA effort in its own right). I found the songs from Boogie Nights enjoyable but distracting.

Dano should have been nominated.

The greatest movie of the century until CMBYN came along

by Anonymousreply 10November 24, 2018 10:37 PM

It was an overly bloated mess of a movie that I have zero desire to watch again. Strained seriousness is how Andrew Sarris would have labeled the film.

Much like Tarantino, PTA's best films were his earlier ones. And I wish some directors would leave the writing of screenplays to actual writers than doing it themselves.

I drink your milkshake, OP.

by Anonymousreply 12November 24, 2018 10:37 PM

I think TWBB, The Master, and Phantom Thread are PTA’s greatest films.

by Anonymousreply 13November 24, 2018 10:40 PM

I kept getting distracted by the fact that DDL was channelling John Huston's voice from Chinatown throughout the movie.

by Anonymousreply 14November 24, 2018 10:48 PM

Amazing movie, but I'm a fan of Daniel Day Lewis. Paul Dano was really good in it, too. It was like reading a Flannery O'Connor story.

I LOVED Boogie Nights, it's one of my favorite movies. Haven't liked anything else he has done. There Will Be Blood is a wanna-be Citizen Kane, without any of the genius, beauty, and humor.

by Anonymousreply 16November 24, 2018 11:09 PM

Thanks, I just rented Bogie Nights.

by Anonymousreply 17November 24, 2018 11:27 PM

Dano had such a whiny voice. I can't believe anyone would take him serious as a preacher.

by Anonymousreply 18November 24, 2018 11:27 PM

I despise DDL . I found TWBB mildly interesting at best. I always think though is there any DDL movie where he doesnt chew the scenery to shreds?

by Anonymousreply 19November 24, 2018 11:46 PM

Movie threads are helpful for identifying the Philistines of Datalounge.

BASTARD IN A BASKET!

by Anonymousreply 21November 24, 2018 11:53 PM

I couldn't even finish watching it the first time. I left the screening.

by Anonymousreply 22November 25, 2018 1:01 AM

Is PTA one of the last great auteurs?

by Anonymousreply 23November 25, 2018 1:15 AM

The scene when H.W. finally breaks free is heartbreaking.
