Why do some guys have gayvoice and most of us don't?

I have known a few guys over the years who have gayvoice and it is hilarious. I don't mean lisping, Glee-watching fairies either. I mean regular guys who just always talk with a distinctive gay demeanor.

by Anonymousreply 110December 17, 2018 2:54 AM

Most of us...don't?

by Anonymousreply 1November 18, 2018 3:20 PM

That's me. When I open my mouth it's over. Happily I don't give a flying fu%%

by Anonymousreply 2November 18, 2018 3:21 PM

I think it is genetic. They cannot help talking like a faggot running to a rainbow. They will get much homophobia directed against them. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 3November 18, 2018 3:42 PM

Most gay guys I know are conservative. They would never hang with someone with gayvoice anymore than they'd hang with a drag queen with seven foot tall hair.

by Anonymousreply 4November 18, 2018 3:57 PM

I think the ones that do speak that way have been desperate for attention for so long, that now it's just habit. They intentionally did it to be girlish, and did it for so long they may not even realize they're doing it anymore.

by Anonymousreply 5November 18, 2018 4:00 PM

I can’t stand gayvoice anymore than I can the straight douche-bro voice. What exactly are these people trying to prove?

by Anonymousreply 6November 18, 2018 4:02 PM

I think you could control your voice

by Anonymousreply 7November 18, 2018 4:03 PM

I'm not sure I'd agree most do not. While it is true only a minority has serious gayvoice, a lot of gay guys have still have a detectable hint of gayvoice. I'm not sure if the guys who don't have any at all would be in the majority.

by Anonymousreply 8November 18, 2018 4:06 PM

It's a plot from the Secret Lesbians to keep gay men out of the presenter and game show host industry.

by Anonymousreply 9November 18, 2018 4:13 PM

OP, FUCK OFF.

Go to a straight site if you want to gay-bash. This board is intended for gays and we have self respect here.

So ask the straights at Reddit and iVillage why most straight people have DIPSHIT VOICE.

Everybody else, please F&F the homophobic OP who thinks he's being sly.

A hateful post about hate.

by Anonymousreply 14November 18, 2018 4:39 PM

I FF’d R3.

by Anonymousreply 15November 18, 2018 4:40 PM

I can only speak for myself and my reality but I don't know a single gay with gay voice or who's effeminate. I think we meet people like ourselves. The only gay voice femmes I know are the make up and hair people I work with (I'm in the film business). I'm sure some femme will write Mary! To my comment those are definitely the ones with gayvoice.

by Anonymousreply 16November 18, 2018 4:46 PM

R16 it is the same principle as gorgeous men only go with gorgeous men. Fuglies will only end up with other fuglies unless they are willing to buy a trashy trophy wife. Masculine gay guys only associate with other masculine men. Femmy lisping queens go with anyone willing to tolerate them.

by Anonymousreply 17November 18, 2018 4:52 PM

The r3 is homophobic but I do think that gayvoice and being effeminate has a genetic component. You can see femmes have wider hips like women which affects they gait and they usually have more delicate features and high pitched voices which are clearly results of less testosterone in the womb.

There's also the mannerisms but that is the only socially constructed part. I think femmes copy women and their mannerisms because they're usually their only allies growing up. That's my thesis on that. I've never had women as friends and to this date my closest friends are straight or gay men.

by Anonymousreply 18November 18, 2018 4:55 PM

It is all genetic. No man would ever choose to be gay. They are born that way and cannot just decide to be straight anymore than MJ could be white, even though he tried.

by Anonymousreply 19November 18, 2018 4:59 PM

We're talking about being effeminate and genetics not being gay. Being gay has no relation with being effeminate those are two different things. Masculinity is not exclusive to straights that's the whole point.

by Anonymousreply 20November 18, 2018 5:06 PM

Why some men have gayvoice is purely genetic. They cannot just start talking like a man. It is impossible.

by Anonymousreply 21November 18, 2018 5:44 PM

R21, riiiiight, just like upspeak?

by Anonymousreply 22November 18, 2018 5:53 PM

I have a higher pitch voice and people always call me ma'am on the phone

by Anonymousreply 23November 18, 2018 5:55 PM

R23 the fact you buy your tampons in bulk at Costco is probably another reason. You type like a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 24November 18, 2018 5:59 PM

R23 you reminded me of an incident when I was visiting my mother and sister a few years ago. My aunt called and I answered the phone, to which she said "Patricia, how are you?"... "It's not Patricia"... "Lisa, how are you?"... at least it put to bed my doubts about my gay voice.

by Anonymousreply 25November 18, 2018 6:20 PM

Why do some apparently straight men (i.e., with wives and several children) have gay voice (I have a doctor like this and Matthew Weiner has a very gay voice but was accused of sexual harassment by a woman plus he ha 4 kids). It's a mystery to me.

by Anonymousreply 26November 18, 2018 6:43 PM

They're not talking 'gay' they're talking like females. Because psychologically that's who they identify with: 'I like dick so I play on the girl's team'.

by Anonymousreply 27November 18, 2018 6:45 PM

A male talking like a female is automatically gay. Duh.

by Anonymousreply 28November 18, 2018 6:59 PM

Gayvoice only works if you’re funny and over the top

by Anonymousreply 29November 18, 2018 7:53 PM

It appears you're wrong. Straight men don't feel the need to prove their masculinity the way gay men do. Especially the "masculine" ones who try very hard. You're a prime example.

by Anonymousreply 40November 18, 2018 10:05 PM

R39, your attempts at masculinity are adorable. Why do gay men like you think straight masculinity is equivalent to acting like a retarded dudebro?

by Anonymousreply 41November 18, 2018 10:06 PM

Matt was hot in that video. I worked with a guy like Kris and he was married with 2 kids. Surprised me when I found out. I thought he was gay.

by Anonymousreply 42November 18, 2018 10:15 PM

I don't think gay voice is genetic.

I'm bilingual. I've spoken Portuguese and English since I started to talk.

Men have commented how butch I sound when I speak in Portuguese, but I can sound fey when speaking English, especially if I'm around gay men with a lot of gay voice.

by Anonymousreply 43November 18, 2018 11:44 PM

Butch? I am so sure.

by Anonymousreply 44November 19, 2018 12:07 AM

Many gay men WANT to speak in a gay accent. Have you ever seen a gaggle of gay men conversing in a bar or restaurant? It's like a competition of who can sound the most gay.

When gay men come out of the closet, and begin socializing with other gays who speak with the gay accent, they soon start speaking in the same way. For many gay men, it's fun to speak that way, and it becomes a badge of identity.

by Anonymousreply 52November 19, 2018 11:16 AM

[quote] Men have commented how butch I sound when I speak in Portuguese, but I can sound fey when speaking English, especially if I'm around gay men with a lot of gay voice.

R43 I agree totally. Pitch/timbre and verbal inflection signify differently between lingual families.

In theater I’ve worked with plenty of ‘Haafu’ (I.e. biracial) bilingual Korean & Japanese men of various sexualities whose speaking voices all confound my monoglot gaydar. One Japanese of my acquaintance, who is half-Spanish and able to speak some broken English, sounds like a bitchy flamer extraordinaire when he speaks his mother’s Spanish but like a butchy bro when he speaks his native Asian tongue.

Here’s an example of the inverse, too. Famous dancer/actor Aiba Hiroki speaks some English and does it in a boyish masc way, but his Japanese is so femmey that the other guys he works with used to affectionately make fun of his nasal high-pitch and call him by the nicknames ‘Aiba-chan’ and ‘Aiba-cchi’ (suffix pronouns typically used to address cute little kids or pretty younger girls). Granted, the long silky hair and hairless fine-features aren’t helping his case, but he’d sound as gay if he was hairy and bulky.

Is gayvoice a mix of effeminacy with annoying vocal fry or upspeak ? I know femme guys with very soft and high pitched voices but I wouldn't call it gayvoice because they're not emulating women and are not annoying.

by Anonymousreply 59November 22, 2018 8:49 PM

I have a crush on the Eyetalian dude bro in the NYT video up thread, He is the very soul of masculinity...not straightness, but masculinity.

by Anonymousreply 60November 22, 2018 9:15 PM

I am a musician and have perfect pitch. I remember music from when I was a toddler. I don't speak in monotone so probably some might take that as gay ounding. I really don't care what people think.

by Anonymousreply 61November 22, 2018 9:59 PM

R52 I don't quite fully agree. I have a younger brother who is gay but was hard-core closeted, even becoming religious and politically conservative, until he came out in 2012 at age 28. Nevertheless, we've always suspected he was gay because he seemed effeminate and had a bit of gayvoice. However, since his coming out, he's been very flaming all around. So, was he suppressing it before to no avail? Or has he exaggerated his effeminacy since immersing himself in the gay community?

by Anonymousreply 62November 22, 2018 10:11 PM

Let’s embrace gay voice. It’s part of being gay.

by Anonymousreply 63November 22, 2018 10:13 PM

It’s all part of our gay culture. Who needs a butch voice ? Jesus!

by Anonymousreply 64November 22, 2018 10:16 PM

It’s like everything else in life - a muddle. . Some guys just talk like that gay or straight & some gay guys camp it up - either intentionally or not There is no one answer.

by Anonymousreply 65November 22, 2018 10:56 PM

I've talked about this on DL before. I knew I had gayvoice when I was pretty young, and especially, once I realized I was gay (about 12 years old). It bothered me a lot. My older brother eventually started trying to help me change my behavior so that I wouldn't get bullied. He taught me to walk and hold books differently, but all he could is ask "Why do you talk like that?" Since I couldn't hear myself, I didn't know what he meant. Well, we had a tape recorder that taped onto cassette tapes, and I tried taping myself talking. I was mortified. So I would listen to TV shoes, and try to copy various actors who I thought sounded very masculine. It was usually actors on 'Masterpiece Theatre', but Robert Reed on 'The Brady Bunch' was also a good example.

I sort of miss having gayvoice, to be honest, but times were different, and I had a hard enough time dealing with being gay back then. I was born in 1961, BTW.

by Anonymousreply 66November 22, 2018 10:59 PM

by Anonymousreply 67November 22, 2018 11:00 PM

R40, you have a point; I live and work in LA in the biz and am around masculine guys all the time, but there's something forced about they way they put themselves forth; I visited NYC for work a few years ago and marveled at the masculine MEN walking up and down the streets who aren't in the biz; they're just MEN.

by Anonymousreply 80November 23, 2018 2:40 AM

"When gay men come out of the closet, and begin socializing with other gays who speak with the gay accent, they soon start speaking in the same way."

And yet plenty of closet cases have it.....

by Anonymousreply 81November 23, 2018 2:47 AM

R81. Exactly. I often clock men who arent openly gay by their voice, even more so than a 'gay face'. I am under no delusions that I sound straight. I was sent to a speech threapist as a child in the early 90's by my parents to 'work' on my voice. It never worked, I still sound very gay. And it is GAY sounding, not female sounding as well. I was an only child and had mostly male friends as a kid and mostly sterotypically male interests, but always sounded like a gay kid. Its totally born with for me.

by Anonymousreply 82November 23, 2018 2:56 AM

OP: ".... and most of us don't."

One hears it spoken with the intonation of a balloon with the air being let out slowly, piercingly high, miserably and painfully.

by Anonymousreply 83November 23, 2018 3:04 AM

I don’t have a gay voice.

by Anonymousreply 84November 23, 2018 3:53 AM

R78 I think you are similar to a lot of us. With very few exceptions, my boyfriends or lovers appeared straight, like me, but we're not overly masculine either. When I was younger, I couldn't stand to hang around effeminate people, and for a couple of reasons. At the time I didn't want to be associated with "obvious" gay people and identified as such. Secondly, people who use Mary in every sentence drive me crazy. It's really a matter of being comfortable around friends.

by Anonymousreply 85November 23, 2018 4:00 AM

I think a lot of people, specially eldergays have a very strange and outdated idea of what masculinity means today. There's little difference between a femme gay prancing around saying Slay! Queen! and a dudebro trying to shove down your throat he likes pussy. They're both camps and clowns. Masculinity has no connection with sexuality. I for one know more masculine gay guys than straights and most of my straight friends, who are artists, are not are not feminine but are far away from being a pussy hound. I identify with R85 but I'm mostly hit by women, and think it's ok to say that people don't think you're gay right away, those who care about it are usually femme gays with low self steam.

by Anonymousreply 86November 23, 2018 5:41 PM

[quote] It appears you're wrong. Straight men don't feel the need to prove their masculinity the way gay men do. Especially the "masculine" ones who try very hard. You're a prime example

You must be a gay raised and surrounded by women if you think that. It's a very male trait to obsesses over masculinity and showing it off. I'm as gay as the next DLer but I was raised by my dad and my brothers and am yet to find a straight man who doesn't care about it. Geeks and nerds are even more obsessed with masculinity than the athletic types. Women favor masculine men over sensible types, that's the true reality of the world, no Jezebel/Vox article will change that.

by Anonymousreply 87November 23, 2018 5:47 PM

"Women favor masculine men over sensible types, that's the true reality of the world, no Jezebel/Vox article will change that."

by Anonymousreply 91November 26, 2018 3:27 AM

by Anonymousreply 96December 9, 2018 4:40 PM

When I meet or talk to guys via the apps, I encounter a significantly higher percentage of guys with gay voice than I do in my own friend group.

Not really sure what the takeaway on that is.

by Anonymousreply 97December 9, 2018 5:15 PM

R94 do you say that on every thread, you revolting cunt.

by Anonymousreply 98December 9, 2018 7:22 PM

This is another variation of the "masc" obsession. What an odd badge of honor to try to claim. Even though we're all marginalized as gay people, some of us want to create a hierarchy among gays where the ultra-macho gays can be superior to "the other ones". I don't get why you want to try to make other gays feel inferior. Are you trying to be teacher's pet to the straight folks? The straights don't respect the dudebro gays any more than they respect the gays with more feminine voices.

And here's the craziest part of the whole thing. Even among the masc-est of the masc gays, when they get mad...or really happy, or they've had some alcohol, the gayvoice comes rolling out.

And I have noticed a lot of straight men with higher voices. They don't care; they're secure and self-assured. They're not obsessed with hiding it to try to maintain some image. I notice it mostly in Jewish men and European men, from cultures where emotional expression is encouraged among men.

by Anonymousreply 99December 9, 2018 8:08 PM

R99 Fuck off. Many straight guys have gayvoice and gayface. Are they marginalized? Up yours.

by Anonymousreply 100December 9, 2018 8:33 PM

Yes, R180, they are. But they don't care. And neither should you. But if your macho voice makes you proud--and superior--then, more power to you!

yes R100, they are. But you go on with your bad self, you deep-voiced stud.
