I have known a few guys over the years who have gayvoice and it is hilarious. I don't mean lisping, Glee-watching fairies either. I mean regular guys who just always talk with a distinctive gay demeanor.
Why do some guys have gayvoice and most of us don't?

Most gay guys I know are conservative. They would never hang with someone with gayvoice anymore than they'd hang with a drag queen with seven foot tall hair.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 18, 2018 3:57 PM |
I think the ones that do speak that way have been desperate for attention for so long, that now it's just habit. They intentionally did it to be girlish, and did it for so long they may not even realize they're doing it anymore.

I can’t stand gayvoice anymore than I can the straight douche-bro voice. What exactly are these people trying to prove?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 18, 2018 4:02 PM |
I'm not sure I'd agree most do not. While it is true only a minority has serious gayvoice, a lot of gay guys have still have a detectable hint of gayvoice. I'm not sure if the guys who don't have any at all would be in the majority.

It's a plot from the Secret Lesbians to keep gay men out of the presenter and game show host industry.

I can only speak for myself and my reality but I don't know a single gay with gay voice or who's effeminate. I think we meet people like ourselves. The only gay voice femmes I know are the make up and hair people I work with (I'm in the film business). I'm sure some femme will write Mary! To my comment those are definitely the ones with gayvoice.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 18, 2018 4:46 PM |
R16 it is the same principle as gorgeous men only go with gorgeous men. Fuglies will only end up with other fuglies unless they are willing to buy a trashy trophy wife. Masculine gay guys only associate with other masculine men. Femmy lisping queens go with anyone willing to tolerate them.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 18, 2018 4:52 PM |
The r3 is homophobic but I do think that gayvoice and being effeminate has a genetic component. You can see femmes have wider hips like women which affects they gait and they usually have more delicate features and high pitched voices which are clearly results of less testosterone in the womb.
There's also the mannerisms but that is the only socially constructed part. I think femmes copy women and their mannerisms because they're usually their only allies growing up. That's my thesis on that. I've never had women as friends and to this date my closest friends are straight or gay men.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 18, 2018 4:55 PM |
It is all genetic. No man would ever choose to be gay. They are born that way and cannot just decide to be straight anymore than MJ could be white, even though he tried.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 18, 2018 4:59 PM |
We're talking about being effeminate and genetics not being gay. Being gay has no relation with being effeminate those are two different things. Masculinity is not exclusive to straights that's the whole point.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 18, 2018 5:06 PM |
Why some men have gayvoice is purely genetic. They cannot just start talking like a man. It is impossible.

R23 you reminded me of an incident when I was visiting my mother and sister a few years ago. My aunt called and I answered the phone, to which she said "Patricia, how are you?"... "It's not Patricia"... "Lisa, how are you?"... at least it put to bed my doubts about my gay voice.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 18, 2018 6:20 PM |
Why do some apparently straight men (i.e., with wives and several children) have gay voice (I have a doctor like this and Matthew Weiner has a very gay voice but was accused of sexual harassment by a woman plus he ha 4 kids). It's a mystery to me.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 18, 2018 6:43 PM |

Many gay men WANT to speak in a gay accent. Have you ever seen a gaggle of gay men conversing in a bar or restaurant? It's like a competition of who can sound the most gay.
When gay men come out of the closet, and begin socializing with other gays who speak with the gay accent, they soon start speaking in the same way. For many gay men, it's fun to speak that way, and it becomes a badge of identity.

R43 I agree totally. Pitch/timbre and verbal inflection signify differently between lingual families.
In theater I’ve worked with plenty of ‘Haafu’ (I.e. biracial) bilingual Korean & Japanese men of various sexualities whose speaking voices all confound my monoglot gaydar. One Japanese of my acquaintance, who is half-Spanish and able to speak some broken English, sounds like a bitchy flamer extraordinaire when he speaks his mother’s Spanish but like a butchy bro when he speaks his native Asian tongue.
Here’s an example of the inverse, too. Famous dancer/actor Aiba Hiroki speaks some English and does it in a boyish masc way, but his Japanese is so femmey that the other guys he works with used to affectionately make fun of his nasal high-pitch and call him by the nicknames ‘Aiba-chan’ and ‘Aiba-cchi’ (suffix pronouns typically used to address cute little kids or pretty younger girls). Granted, the long silky hair and hairless fine-features aren’t helping his case, but he’d sound as gay if he was hairy and bulky.

R52 I don't quite fully agree. I have a younger brother who is gay but was hard-core closeted, even becoming religious and politically conservative, until he came out in 2012 at age 28. Nevertheless, we've always suspected he was gay because he seemed effeminate and had a bit of gayvoice. However, since his coming out, he's been very flaming all around. So, was he suppressing it before to no avail? Or has he exaggerated his effeminacy since immersing himself in the gay community?

I've talked about this on DL before. I knew I had gayvoice when I was pretty young, and especially, once I realized I was gay (about 12 years old). It bothered me a lot. My older brother eventually started trying to help me change my behavior so that I wouldn't get bullied. He taught me to walk and hold books differently, but all he could is ask "Why do you talk like that?" Since I couldn't hear myself, I didn't know what he meant. Well, we had a tape recorder that taped onto cassette tapes, and I tried taping myself talking. I was mortified. So I would listen to TV shoes, and try to copy various actors who I thought sounded very masculine. It was usually actors on 'Masterpiece Theatre', but Robert Reed on 'The Brady Bunch' was also a good example.
I sort of miss having gayvoice, to be honest, but times were different, and I had a hard enough time dealing with being gay back then. I was born in 1961, BTW.

R81. Exactly. I often clock men who arent openly gay by their voice, even more so than a 'gay face'. I am under no delusions that I sound straight. I was sent to a speech threapist as a child in the early 90's by my parents to 'work' on my voice. It never worked, I still sound very gay. And it is GAY sounding, not female sounding as well. I was an only child and had mostly male friends as a kid and mostly sterotypically male interests, but always sounded like a gay kid. Its totally born with for me.

R78 I think you are similar to a lot of us. With very few exceptions, my boyfriends or lovers appeared straight, like me, but we're not overly masculine either. When I was younger, I couldn't stand to hang around effeminate people, and for a couple of reasons. At the time I didn't want to be associated with "obvious" gay people and identified as such. Secondly, people who use Mary in every sentence drive me crazy. It's really a matter of being comfortable around friends.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | November 23, 2018 4:00 AM |
I think a lot of people, specially eldergays have a very strange and outdated idea of what masculinity means today. There's little difference between a femme gay prancing around saying Slay! Queen! and a dudebro trying to shove down your throat he likes pussy. They're both camps and clowns. Masculinity has no connection with sexuality. I for one know more masculine gay guys than straights and most of my straight friends, who are artists, are not are not feminine but are far away from being a pussy hound. I identify with R85 but I'm mostly hit by women, and think it's ok to say that people don't think you're gay right away, those who care about it are usually femme gays with low self steam.

You must be a gay raised and surrounded by women if you think that. It's a very male trait to obsesses over masculinity and showing it off. I'm as gay as the next DLer but I was raised by my dad and my brothers and am yet to find a straight man who doesn't care about it. Geeks and nerds are even more obsessed with masculinity than the athletic types. Women favor masculine men over sensible types, that's the true reality of the world, no Jezebel/Vox article will change that.

by Anonymous | reply 98 | December 9, 2018 7:22 PM |
This is another variation of the "masc" obsession. What an odd badge of honor to try to claim. Even though we're all marginalized as gay people, some of us want to create a hierarchy among gays where the ultra-macho gays can be superior to "the other ones". I don't get why you want to try to make other gays feel inferior. Are you trying to be teacher's pet to the straight folks? The straights don't respect the dudebro gays any more than they respect the gays with more feminine voices.
And here's the craziest part of the whole thing. Even among the masc-est of the masc gays, when they get mad...or really happy, or they've had some alcohol, the gayvoice comes rolling out.
And I have noticed a lot of straight men with higher voices. They don't care; they're secure and self-assured. They're not obsessed with hiding it to try to maintain some image. I notice it mostly in Jewish men and European men, from cultures where emotional expression is encouraged among men.
