BREAKING:

My dog groomer's grandmother, Sally Mae, dies at age 89.

by Anonymousreply 3November 16, 2018 4:01 PM

Oh no. The Princess Bride guy.

by Anonymousreply 4November 16, 2018 4:02 PM

Shame he didn't hang on to see the end of Trump.

by Anonymousreply 5November 16, 2018 4:02 PM

He was a phenomenal screenwriter. His brother James Goldman ("Lion in Winter") was equally talented.

by Anonymousreply 6November 16, 2018 4:05 PM

HOT BACK IN THE DAY.

by Anonymousreply 7November 16, 2018 4:08 PM

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are grateful that he kept their secret until the grave.

by Anonymousreply 8November 16, 2018 4:20 PM

A great and prolific writer, known for many things; however IMO he wrote one of the best and most memorable novels I have ever read, BOYS AND GIRLS TOGETHER. I often cite this book in the "recommend a book" threads we have here. It was critically panned when it came out in the mid 60s, which caused him to turn to screenwriting rather than novels, but the book became a big bestseller anyway. It has a very memorable gay storyline too, which I have never forgotten.

by Anonymousreply 9November 16, 2018 4:29 PM

Am I the only one who thinks Princess Bride is terribly overrated?

by Anonymousreply 10November 16, 2018 4:30 PM

Shush, R3, the grownups are talking.

by Anonymousreply 11November 16, 2018 4:30 PM

No one knows anything.

by Anonymousreply 12November 16, 2018 4:33 PM

"The fall will kill ya."

by Anonymousreply 13November 16, 2018 5:06 PM

Thanks for highlighting Boys and Girls Together, r9. I read it a hundred years ago and was blown away by the characters and by the way he constructed numerous plots and then skillfully tied together these apparently disparate stories and memorable characters.

by Anonymousreply 14November 16, 2018 5:17 PM

Oh a sad day for me. I loved just about every thing he wrote. Adventures in the Screen Trade and The Season are often over looked.

by Anonymousreply 15November 16, 2018 5:18 PM

I loved Soldier in the Rain -- he taught my 15 year old self many wise, if sad, truths

by Anonymousreply 16November 16, 2018 5:24 PM

Maybe this will clear the way for the Guettel musical of The Princess Bride to be produced.

But then again I bet Goldman put something in his will that would block that. He was that type of guy.

by Anonymousreply 17November 16, 2018 5:25 PM

Is it safe?

by Anonymousreply 18November 16, 2018 5:25 PM

Jesus Father, how I hate Norman Mailer.

Yes, his pics still trigger revulsion.

by Anonymousreply 19November 16, 2018 5:56 PM

someone REALLY does not know how to title a thread

by Anonymousreply 20November 16, 2018 9:09 PM

Oooh, R19, can you elaborate? I didn't know that.

BTW, Mailer presented Goldman with his second Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 21November 16, 2018 9:09 PM

Stop sullying this thread with the M-name.

by Anonymousreply 22November 16, 2018 11:13 PM

Boys and Girls Together was my favorite book when I was a teenager in the 70s and led to me read or watch everything he’s written. RIP William Goldman.

by Anonymousreply 23November 16, 2018 11:38 PM

The Season is a good gossipy account of a year in the life of Broadway.

Yes, R9, it it a wonderful read. But really, I'm too pretty, I'll kill myself? The Season excellent too.

by Anonymousreply 25November 16, 2018 11:53 PM

That's a pretty superficial take, r25.

Wonder if in his will he finally took credit for Good Will Hunting.

by Anonymousreply 28November 17, 2018 12:29 AM

Or if he finally gave up credit for All the President's Men.

by Anonymousreply 29November 17, 2018 12:30 AM

He doctored a lot of scripts. Why are you so sure he had no role in these?

by Anonymousreply 30November 17, 2018 12:35 AM

Goldman’s The Season is indeed tons o’ fun to read, but it’s also incredibly homophobic, particularly in the chapters about Henry Sweet Henry and Judy Garland. I wonder if Goldman evolved any over the years?

by Anonymousreply 31November 17, 2018 12:43 AM

. Really. Do enlighten us R26

R31 He did like Mart Crowley's Boys in the Band.

by Anonymousreply 35November 17, 2018 1:12 AM

I'm not sure that's possible, r32, if you're also r25.

by Anonymousreply 36November 17, 2018 2:36 AM

Heh heh.

He had a falling out with Bryan Forbes over Nanette Newman's casting in The Stepford Wives. He said she had a fat ass and was not the playboy bunny type he wanted the wives to be. Nanette was Bryan's wife.

by Anonymousreply 38November 17, 2018 12:35 PM

Very sad news. My partner and I saw the ‘Butch Cassidy’ picture in theatres when it came out for my 50th birthday back in 1969. My partner and I just re-watched the Redford picture ‘Great Gatsby’, and it reminded out of this great picture. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 39November 17, 2018 1:24 PM

Did Goldman ever comment on Good Will Hunting?

by Anonymousreply 40November 18, 2018 5:16 PM

^ Yes, in detail.

by Anonymousreply 42November 18, 2018 5:23 PM

R42–can you please post that lin?mk? TIA!

by Anonymousreply 44November 18, 2018 5:26 PM

R41 That's interesting about Stallone never writing another script. Did Matt and Ben ever write another one, singly or together?

by Anonymousreply 45November 18, 2018 7:57 PM

R45 -

Matt wrote two more for Gus van Sant: Gerry (with Casey Affleck) and Promised Land (with John Krasinski)

Ben wrote Gone Baby Gone (with Aaron Stockard), The Town (with Peter Craig) and Live by Night. He also directed all 3.

by Anonymousreply 46November 18, 2018 8:08 PM

Truth be told, it was rumored at the time that not only Mr. Goldman, but several other scripters doctored GWH.

by Anonymousreply 47November 18, 2018 8:12 PM

I just pulled his "Which Lie Did I Tell?: More Adventures In The Screen Trade" from my shelf and look forward to rereading it over the holidays.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Goldman .

by Anonymousreply 48November 18, 2018 8:20 PM

His greatest claim to fame is being the brother of the man who wrote FOLLIES.

by Anonymousreply 49November 18, 2018 8:31 PM

I'm watching and listening to his commentary on 'Harper', his first hit, and gawd the man is insufferable. Rambling all over the place, repeating things he said 5 minutes earlier, going on and on about Paul Newman, and then going way off topic -- in both directions -- talking about MTV, Jean Harlow, Mel Gibson, etc., etc..

Insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 50November 4, 2019 4:02 AM

"Harper" is insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 51November 4, 2019 4:04 AM

Nanette Newman was more conventionally attractive than Paula Prentiss.

by Anonymousreply 52November 4, 2019 4:10 AM

He was a homophobic asshole.

by Anonymousreply 53November 4, 2019 4:15 AM

I liked Nanette Newman. She's not hammy.

by Anonymousreply 54November 4, 2019 4:34 AM

He was not homophobic

by Anonymousreply 55November 4, 2019 5:00 AM

R51 agreed. It was waaaay too long, too much dialogue, too many unnecessary red herrings, but hey, it was written by 'The Genius'.

by Anonymousreply 56November 4, 2019 7:31 AM

Try reading his book, "The Season," r55. It reeks of his homophobia, which has been pointed out by numerous contemporary critics.

by Anonymousreply 57November 6, 2019 8:06 PM

Any pertinent passages?

by Anonymousreply 58November 6, 2019 8:08 PM

I agree The Princess Bride is over rated. Just not that funny.

by Anonymousreply 59November 6, 2019 8:12 PM

Not funny at all. He was a one or two hit wonder and rode that all the way to...wherever.
