Why'd Cher never do a good movie after Moonstruck?

She barely even made many.

by Anonymousreply 162June 18, 2019 8:37 PM

She can’t act! Snap out of it!

by Anonymousreply 1November 16, 2018 7:08 AM

She didn't like the filmmaking process she said. All that waiting around. The bits and pieces. With music she is more in control and gets more artistic satisfaction.

Too bad. She's a great actress.

by Anonymousreply 2November 16, 2018 7:13 AM

I loved her in Mermaids.

by Anonymousreply 3November 16, 2018 7:14 AM

Look how genuinely excited I am for her to win the Oscar. Usually I just do my Oh, look (insert name here) won. But I'm really happy here. Plus it was Ironweed. I mean even I didn't see that one.

by Anonymousreply 4November 16, 2018 7:15 AM

How fucking dare you, OP!

by Anonymousreply 5November 16, 2018 8:25 AM

Yeah some singers think they can act

by Anonymousreply 6November 16, 2018 8:31 AM

Moonstruck was so TV movie-like I kept waiting for commercials.

by Anonymousreply 7November 16, 2018 1:33 PM

Look, she wanted an Oscar, she got an Oscar, she was DONE.

by Anonymousreply 8November 16, 2018 1:49 PM

She was awesome in Witches of Eastwick. Cher was excellent in a few films, starting with Silkwood. Moonstruck was a huge film, so fuck you who think otherwise. Even with the horribly ugly Nic Cage, it was a success.

by Anonymousreply 9November 16, 2018 2:00 PM

Mask. Need I say more.

by Anonymousreply 10November 16, 2018 2:17 PM

I've often wondered that too, OP. Good question. Moonstruck is in my top 3 favorite movies of all time. She is luminous in it.

by Anonymousreply 11November 16, 2018 5:28 PM

R8 for the win

by Anonymousreply 12November 16, 2018 5:38 PM

Fuck her.

by Anonymousreply 13November 16, 2018 6:40 PM

She was also in her 40s by the time Moonstruck hit. Not many actresses have brilliant careers as they approach menopause.

by Anonymousreply 14November 16, 2018 6:53 PM

Loved her in Silkwood.

If Cher can make you believe she's a hillbilly lesbian, she's a helluva actress!

by Anonymousreply 15November 16, 2018 6:56 PM

I like Suspect.

by Anonymousreply 16November 16, 2018 7:11 PM

Cher’s casting usually guaranteed a quality movie... but then she did shit like the one with Christina Aguilera and Momma Mia2

by Anonymousreply 17November 16, 2018 7:26 PM

MM2 is glorious late-era Cher tie in with her new tracks.

by Anonymousreply 18November 17, 2018 12:29 AM

She turned down some big hits that she probably should have done. (She has said this.) ex. Thelma and Louise; The War of the Roses.

by Anonymousreply 19November 17, 2018 2:09 AM

She said Burlesque is her worst performance of all time. She was going to star in a Lifetime movie about the Flint water crisis but backed out due to her mother having health issues at the time. She was replaced with Queen Latifah, I believe.

by Anonymousreply 20November 17, 2018 2:15 AM

Cher was great in "Tea With Mussollini," alongside all those British grand dames.

by Anonymousreply 21November 18, 2018 9:08 PM

R21 agree

by Anonymousreply 22November 18, 2018 9:26 PM

After Mermaids she had some bad face work done and smoothed out a lot of the character I think she also focused on her singing career and ended up having some top 40 hits in the late 80s . I don't think making an infomercial not long after winning her Oscar helped - it was viewed as a strange move.

by Anonymousreply 23November 18, 2018 9:29 PM

Sonny was a tyrant who was jealous and called all the shots for her even making stuff up to make her look dumb (the Mount Rushmore story) so after she left him she was free to pursue a lot of things - the harder rock album with her band Black Rose, the Broadway play Come Back to the 5 and Dime

by Anonymousreply 24November 18, 2018 9:29 PM

Suspect was fine, it just wasn't exceptional. She should've won the Oscar for Mask, not Moonstruck, which I never even liked.

by Anonymousreply 25November 18, 2018 10:40 PM

the Flint Michigan water Lifetime movie went to Jill Scott not Queen Latifah

by Anonymousreply 26November 19, 2018 7:31 PM

Jill Scott did a great job in the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. Too bad they left it at one season.

Cher is a lovely actress, very talented. You could tell from the start with those skits she used to do for the Sonny & Cher Show.

by Anonymousreply 27November 19, 2018 7:38 PM

I'll take Mermaids over Moonstruck anytime. Her "What's your major - town tramp?!" line makes me laugh everytime.

Tea with Mussolini was amazing too, but mostly because of the Italian scenery and all those British dames. Cher was barely in it.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 28November 19, 2018 7:39 PM

^^^ never saw Tea with Mussollini. Cher was the centerpiece of that film, around which all the British grand dames revolved Cher was a force of nature in that film.

by Anonymousreply 29November 21, 2018 2:46 PM

OK -- should not admit this, but just watched Mama Mia 2. Not a good movie - but actually thought it was entertaining in a mindless sort of way (and the song between Meryl and her daughter was genuinely touching).

Cher is not really in it much, and is basically playing and reading her lines as if she was Cher from the Sonny and Cher show, so hard to tell if she still has the acting chops or if her face moves enough to show expressions that a different role might require. She did sound really good singing the Abba songs though. She was not overdoing it like she did in many of her 80's pop songs, and sounded strong and not overly auto-tuned.

by Anonymousreply 30November 21, 2018 2:57 PM

She was great in IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK.

by Anonymousreply 31November 23, 2018 2:30 AM

Mermaids was good...that was after Moonstruck.

by Anonymousreply 32November 23, 2018 2:36 AM

Cher for Mrs Van Hopper!

by Anonymousreply 33November 23, 2018 2:44 AM

You contrarians dissing Moonstruck are ridiculous. It’s one of the most timeless, charming films of all time, a true classic.

by Anonymousreply 34November 23, 2018 2:48 AM

She said that infamous infomercial sank her film career in the '90s.

by Anonymousreply 35November 23, 2018 2:52 AM

Cher was very good in Mermaids but Winona absolutely stole the movie from her. Still think it's her best work alongside Age of Innocence and Little Women. Whoopi Goldberg and Diana Ladd's ridiculous nominations belonged to her and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

by Anonymousreply 36November 23, 2018 2:54 AM

Most of Hollywood asked why would people pay to see Cher in a movie when they can watch the Lori Davis infomercials 24 hours a day?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 37November 23, 2018 2:56 AM

I enjoy Cher as an actress: I think she's got a strong instinctual sense of humor and pathos. But two things:

She's ambitious, but a bit lazy. Smarter than she appears. But as stated, the endless routine, repetition, "again, please" of film makes the world of pop music and even concert tours look more rewarding in comparison. (Even her buddy/muse Meryl, who Cher worships, has complained about the sheer tedium of moviemaking.)

Secondly, she unwisely followed her newfound film credibility with drastic cosmetic surgery, so much so that major filmmakers (including her early champion, Robert Altman) were disinclined to cast her in a lead because her appearance was so off-putting. That's a shame.

We want actors to look good, but we want at least a minimum of authentic human expression.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 38November 23, 2018 3:08 AM

R36 they always said that but I disagreed - Ryder had moments where she was good but ultimately that whole schtick with her character (omg she’s Jewish! And she believes in Saints! How funny is THAT?!?) wore thin after a while - and certainly multiple viewings. Whereas Cher’s timing is impeccable as ever even after several viewings.

The ending always puts me in a good mood - I’ve always liked that song...

by Anonymousreply 39November 23, 2018 8:44 AM

Bitch OP i will cut you! mermaids has aged far better than Moonstruck!!

by Anonymousreply 40May 31, 2019 8:31 AM

come back to the five and dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean is my favorite of all her movies

by Anonymousreply 41May 31, 2019 8:52 AM

she's fucked with her face now too much to do real acting work unless she's playing a character that looks distorted.

by Anonymousreply 42May 31, 2019 9:06 AM

R20 is Burlesque really terrible? I have it in my watch list on Netflix. Should I not bother? Love Cher.

by Anonymousreply 43May 31, 2019 12:24 PM

Burlesque is campy fun. Cher is playing Cher. Christina sounds great. Kristen Bell is a classic bitch. Cam Gigdant shows his cute little ass. Definitely a mindless fun movie.

by Anonymousreply 44May 31, 2019 12:34 PM

Thank you r44. I'll save it for a gloomy day!

by Anonymousreply 45May 31, 2019 1:23 PM

The reason her acting career petered out is she was struck with a bad case of Epstein-Bar Disease. She's discussed that several times. She was very ill for 2 years. She was pretty much housebound.

She sought help from all sorts of specialists without improvement. She was finally referred to a Chinese herbalist who helped her rebuild her immune system. By the time she was on the mend the movie system had moved on.

by Anonymousreply 46May 31, 2019 1:46 PM

Epstein-Bar, appearing in infomercials for her beauty product friend, too lazy, disliking the process - all excuses, no matter how much truth is or is not there. If Cher had been offered good movie scripts ten years after Moonstruck, she'd still be doing movies. But she thew her movie career away, she did it, no one else did.

In hindsight, that turned out to be a pretty good idea. Moonstruck, Mask, Silkwood, Witches of Eastwick, Suspect, Mermaids - these are six pretty good to great films on your resume. If Cher had continued in leading roles for much longer she'd be in crap after crap after crap movie until there were no more offers. She's be a joke, not that she's not a joke now, but I mean in movies.

by Anonymousreply 47May 31, 2019 2:15 PM

Thelma and Louise is one of my favorite movies. Cher would have made a great Louise.

by Anonymousreply 48May 31, 2019 2:48 PM

That's really odd to flame out after a great movie and an Oscar, no less. Then to concerts? Augh - never heard of such a thing.

by Anonymousreply 49May 31, 2019 4:08 PM

She made more from her concerts than she ever would make for a movie

by Anonymousreply 50May 31, 2019 5:22 PM

I remember when Silkwood came out. Movies weren't advertised like they are today and the people in the theaters literally gasped when they saw Cher on the screen and were shocked she could act. I have loved Cher since Day One

by Anonymousreply 51May 31, 2019 5:26 PM

It seemed like she made a deliberate choice to refocus on music after winning the Oscar. Seemed kinda odd to me, since the albums she made weren't all that great and she must have still been getting good movie offers. You have to figure she's just not that driven as an actress.

by Anonymousreply 52May 31, 2019 5:29 PM

A natural actress. Never a wrong note.

by Anonymousreply 53May 31, 2019 5:31 PM

It was hard to take her seriously after those incredibly cheesy Lori Davis hair product infomercials. There's a reason you don't typically see Oscar winners doing those things...

by Anonymousreply 54May 31, 2019 6:16 PM

Is Gaga the new Cher?

by Anonymousreply 55May 31, 2019 6:51 PM

R55 fuck off monster you know the answer already

by Anonymousreply 56May 31, 2019 7:42 PM

You've got to stay in the game. After Cher's string of hit movies, she got sick with Epstein-Barr. As a result, she did that hair care infomercial that was extremely poor judgment on her part for an A-lister at the time. So when you fall off the radar, even for an Oscar-winning actress, you're a bit damaged. And unfortunately, you get a bit older. Time waits for no one...and in that interim, other actresses came on strong including Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, etc. I guess leading roles dried up for women of a certain age except for the likes of Meryl Streep, Viola Davis and a few British actresses. Maybe Cher could have made cameo appearances or worked as a supporting actress,, but the window of opportunity to be a leading lady was closing.

Then, Cher's music career took off again with "Believe," hit albums and touring. You can't really make a movie when you're on the road year after year. But nonetheless, Cher was back on top in her original role as a singer and entertainer. Movies were a thing of the past except for last summer's Mama Mia. I am a huge fan of Cher, but now she really is getting older. It's not just her, but not many actresses in their '70s are getting lead roles these days. Maybe Cher could play Mama Rose in Gypsy if Barbra would only let it go.

by Anonymousreply 57May 31, 2019 8:22 PM

Am I the only one that saw Faithful with Ryan O’Neal and Chazz Palminteri? It’s not good and Cher probably wasn’t a good choice for the lead but I can kind of see why she would choose it since it’s not a typical “Cher” role.

by Anonymousreply 58May 31, 2019 8:49 PM

^ YES

by Anonymousreply 59June 1, 2019 1:41 AM

She disappeared for major reconstruction before she resurfaced with Believe. At the time she said she was tired of W country and needed to retire to France. Among other things probably.

It was a crafty and strategic business and professional plan. Rebuild the face and body. Refocus on music. Get off the roller coaster of movie making.

by Anonymousreply 60June 1, 2019 1:47 AM

Monstruck is awful, barely could watch it, olympia was the best thing about it. Mermaids on the other hand is great from start to finish.

by Anonymousreply 61June 3, 2019 11:41 PM

I find it odd that both Cher and Dolly Parton, had big movies in the 1980s, and then just seemed to disappear from the big screen for years. I actually thought it would be a great film if Cher, Dolly, and Bette headlined a movie together.

by Anonymousreply 62June 3, 2019 11:56 PM

only a crazy person would Call Moonstruck awful

by Anonymousreply 63June 4, 2019 12:17 AM

[quote]At the time she said she was tired of W country and needed to retire to France.

What's 'W country'?

by Anonymousreply 64June 4, 2019 12:21 AM

R84

Not the OP but Cher has said many times she wants to move at least part time to Franco & be buried there. However, she has said all of that is on hold due to her mom's health & inability to fly.

She said she's even picked out the cemetery she wants to be buried in but you must be a resident to buy a plot there.

by Anonymousreply 65June 4, 2019 1:23 AM

Sometimes you just don’t feel like tryin’ to make movies anymore, ‘sall!!

by Anonymousreply 66June 4, 2019 1:51 AM

That infomercial wasn't bad as far as infomercials go. She was friends with Lori Davis and I thought it was sweet of Cher to be in it without caring about her image. She probably did it for free.

by Anonymousreply 67June 4, 2019 5:21 AM

Early '90s Cher was more about business than movies. She did Mermaids and another movie with Chazz Palminteri but she was mostly visible for her infomercials and her exercise tapes with Keli Roberts. I didn't really care about the infomercials. It wasn't like you had to watch them. And her exercise videos were actually good and in keeping with what other celebrities were doing.

Cher seemed to regroup by 1995 when she released It's A Man's World. She did some great singing on that album (love "One By One") and then of course a few years later we got "Believe". I thought she was fantastic in Tea with Mussolini. But she focused on her music and farewell tour(s).

I agree that her plastic surgery is too distracting on the big screen. She doesn't look bad, but she's lost the ability to make facial expressions which were such an important part of her best performances. In both Burlesque and Mamma Mia 2, her face is so tight and she also seems to have trouble moving. She's always behind a desk or standing for long periods. It's awkward.

by Anonymousreply 68June 4, 2019 5:30 AM

As someone who went to Catholic schools, I love Mermaids.

by Anonymousreply 69June 4, 2019 6:08 AM

Because she never made a good movie after Silkwood.

by Anonymousreply 70June 4, 2019 6:18 AM

R70 how is mermaids not good? Even Ricci was good and kids usually suck.

by Anonymousreply 71June 4, 2019 6:21 AM

I love Cher and I think she is a very good actress. But honestly, she looks too plastic now. Your not going to be offered a good character part like Kathy Bates gets because your face is frozen.

by Anonymousreply 72June 4, 2019 6:28 AM

Cher can make more in one month on tour or in Vegas than she could in any movie- back then, and especially now.

She was making $300k a week in Vegas, and that was back in the late 70s/early 80s. Trying for an acting career at a relatively older age and succeeding is pretty impressive.

Cher has her Oscar and lately an incredible streak of luck with the Mamma Mia/album tie-in, the Broadway show, sold-out tour. She's busier than ever at 73. Good for her, she's a nice person.

by Anonymousreply 73June 4, 2019 6:41 AM

She should have done Thelma and Louise when it was offered. She has said this herself. (especially since DL now hates Sarandon.)

by Anonymousreply 74June 4, 2019 6:44 AM

I agree about the plastic surgery. Her strength was in playing tough talking, no bullshit characters. She hit her stride the most in Mermaids where got to be glamourous and down to earth at the same time. The surgery worked against this.

by Anonymousreply 75June 4, 2019 7:44 AM

I loved watching the Lori Davis infomercial. It was always on.

by Anonymousreply 76June 4, 2019 12:12 PM

The only thing about her surgery that's off putting to me are her lips. She's allergic to collagen so they used Gortex to enlarge her lips & it was a fiasco. Back when she did it that was the only option. Now they have options but taking the Gortex out would be very disfiguring.

Everything else is fine except her lips, especially the bottom lip.

by Anonymousreply 79June 4, 2019 12:53 PM

She got her Oscar and that was enough. Moreover her recording career revived but what hurt her was those infomercials.

She worked hard to be taken seriously and then threw it away

by Anonymousreply 80June 4, 2019 12:57 PM

Why was that movie called 'Mermaids'? The only thing I can think of is that Cher's character dresses up as a mermaid for the Halloween party, but that was a quick scene.

by Anonymousreply 81June 4, 2019 1:05 PM

Here's the SNL parody of that infomercial, starring Christina Applegate as Cher and Chris Farley as Lori. XD

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 82June 4, 2019 1:10 PM

I'm not sure I agree that Cher threw it all away. She's had a crazy successful career, and still does.

by Anonymousreply 83June 4, 2019 2:32 PM

Cher always had ups and downs. The late 80's were great for her. Her movie career took off and her music was successful again. The 90's not so much. The movie roles dried up and her music choices were not the best. The infomercial was really no big deal but because everything else was on the decline, it seemed bottom of the barrel. Then Sonny died and the focus was on Cher. She delivered that great eulogy and then came "Believe" and she was hot again. Her movie career never really got back on track but she really hasn't been down in the last 20 years.

by Anonymousreply 84June 4, 2019 2:49 PM

Despite all the horrid reviews, I watched Burlesque because I thought that Cher is usually in good movies so how bad could it be?

Well...

by Anonymousreply 85June 4, 2019 3:15 PM

I liked Burlesque. It was mindless entertainment with some decent music and eye candy.

by Anonymousreply 86June 4, 2019 3:18 PM

I think Cher wanted to be taken seriously as an actress and once she did by winning an Oscar she just sort of lost interest. I don’t know how many character roles she would’ve made an audience forget she was Cher post 1988. Everyone cites Mask, but let’s face it she was only playing herself. At least Moonstruck, I forgot for stretches of the film about the Cher persona.

by Anonymousreply 87June 4, 2019 3:27 PM

She can now, but Cher couldn't afford an acting career for the long haul back then. She supports too many people.

by Anonymousreply 88June 4, 2019 4:52 PM

I want them to remake Mermaids with the charlotte character a 15 year old gay boy named Charlie. That sex scene with the older handsome Joe will be so sweet.

by Anonymousreply 89June 5, 2019 10:59 AM

Who do you cast as Charlie? River? Leo?

by Anonymousreply 90June 5, 2019 11:26 AM

R90 timmy still looks 15 , now we need an older tall strong actor to play handyman Joe..

by Anonymousreply 91June 5, 2019 11:38 AM

Either Hemsworth. Both could split his ass like a ripe melon.

by Anonymousreply 92June 5, 2019 11:53 AM

R92 I’d love to see that!

by Anonymousreply 93June 5, 2019 12:22 PM

Why did she resort to autotune on her 90s records when she could still hit high notes in the 80s?

by Anonymousreply 94June 5, 2019 1:46 PM

Didn't Cher introduce Autotune in "Believe"? I believe it was used sparingly for robotic effect.

by Anonymousreply 95June 5, 2019 2:36 PM

No, she got a lot of money to do those infomercials. But it made her a joke.

Later protestations that she had Lyme disease or that Lori was a "friend" were lame.

Are those products still available?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 96June 5, 2019 2:40 PM

R94, she can still hit high notes now.

by Anonymousreply 97June 5, 2019 3:05 PM

[quote]She can now, but Cher couldn't afford an acting career for the long haul back then. She supports too many people.

That's a story as old as Hollywood. Lots of stars have to support their entire families and that costs a fortune. I don't believe Chastity or Elijah have ever worked a day in their lives.

What's always been so odd to me is that Cher's management never screamed at her to not do that stupid infomercial. Cher herself may have been unaware of how doing an infomercial would've hurt her career and image, but that's the #1 job of a celebrity manager - to protect their client from fiascoes like that. I assume she had decent representation, given how big a star she was at the time, so who knows why they didn't talk her out of that.

by Anonymousreply 98June 5, 2019 3:21 PM

I have always liked Cher's acting more than her singing. MASK....MOONSTRUCK....MERMAIDS....all good films. I got a kick out of her appearance in MAMMA MIA2....an incredible camp fest. I even liked BURLESQUE..she was good in that as well. No matter what people say about her, she's been laughing all the way to the bank sll these years. As Alfred E. Newman would say, "What? Me Worry?"

by Anonymousreply 99June 5, 2019 3:44 PM

She is not an actress, also didn't learn the craft, just a singer, without much training I guess, and a star.

by Anonymousreply 100June 5, 2019 3:53 PM

Cher was broke (for her) and had Epstien Barr, which is why she did the infomercials. It's only been since the late 90s and the first farewell tour that she became super rich.

by Anonymousreply 101June 5, 2019 3:58 PM

R100 I believe Cher's initial desire was to be an actress, but her fateful meeting with Sonny changed the course of her career.

by Anonymousreply 102June 5, 2019 4:12 PM

Exactly. She did two movies, one with Sonny that are both best forgotten.

by Anonymousreply 103June 5, 2019 4:14 PM

Moonstruck wasn’t that good to me.

by Anonymousreply 104June 5, 2019 4:24 PM

You're in the minority. Everything about it was perfection.

by Anonymousreply 105June 5, 2019 4:28 PM

I love Moonstruck. I have such nostalgia about it. So many good performances and it always just makes me feel happy every time I watch it.

Cher should never have messed with her nose.

by Anonymousreply 106June 5, 2019 5:21 PM

I think she looked perfect in that- the nose and teeth. Minor corrections. After that, well too much

by Anonymousreply 107June 5, 2019 5:54 PM

That good? Never saw Moonstruck. Maybe I'll catch up on it.

by Anonymousreply 108June 5, 2019 6:03 PM

Moonstruck is fun(ny)! I'm not a romantic, so that aspect was lost on me. But it was a joy to watch and I had plenty of laughs. Definitely recommended!

by Anonymousreply 109June 5, 2019 6:04 PM

6 Oscar nominations including screenplay, 3 wins. Pretty impressive since the Academy usually doesn't honor comedies.

by Anonymousreply 110June 5, 2019 6:16 PM

Also, on many lists for one of the best comedies of all time. The big movie that year for MGM was supposed to be Overboard, and after it bombed they put all their resources behind Moonstruck.

by Anonymousreply 112June 5, 2019 6:21 PM

93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

by Anonymousreply 113June 5, 2019 6:25 PM

I am not sure I have seen Moonstruck since it came out when I was in college. I enjoyed it then, but suspect I would appreciate it more now.

by Anonymousreply 114June 5, 2019 6:31 PM

Moonstruck was perfectly cast from the leads to the oldsters playing the extended friends & the family.. It was also a wonderful romance as well as a comedy about a crazy Italian family. So many lines still crack me the hell up.

by Anonymousreply 115June 5, 2019 6:39 PM

Not to derail the thread, but the list at R111 is depressing as hell. Only one sequel in the top twenty. No superhero bullshit.

It’s a shame that Hollywood completely forgot they can make big bucks off stories about real people with a beginning, middle, and end. Now they’d rather risk spending 200 million on a King Arthur reboot no one wants then ten $20 million dollar original stories.

The 1980's really had some good romantic comedies or movies with romantic comedy elements, that had enough other stuff occurring that it did not solely rely on the romance. Moonstruck, Working Girl, Broadcast News, even to some degree Romancing the Stone and Ghosbusters (although that one is a more of a stretch). I am over-generalizing, but feel a lot of the later "romantic comedies" had thinner premises and became more of the "chick flick".

As a teen in the '90s, I remember going to the theater with my pals and having a selection of movies to watch. We'd be like, "Are you in the mood for comedy? Drama? Action? Thrillers?" Now it's basically two options: superhero/action or CGI animation.

by Anonymousreply 118June 5, 2019 7:36 PM

1987 was a strong year for movies, as r111's list shows. What a shame that's now all over. These days, you can count on one hand the number of big-budget theatrical films that are actually made for adults who are not morons.

by Anonymousreply 119June 5, 2019 7:52 PM

Moonstruck is shit, it’s aged like cage has.

by Anonymousreply 120June 5, 2019 10:15 PM

Agree with r116 and r119. 1987 and 1988 are two of my favourite years in film. The VARIETY. But looking through that list above, damn, 1987 had so many comedies. Comedies seem so rare now. Good comedies are even rarer. And the #1 movie of the year was a comedy.

Moonstruck still holds up for me. Very funny. I'd say a lot of those movies on that list still hold up, or are still entertaining (if a little dated).

1987 was definitely the year of Cher. Moonstruck, Suspect and Witches of Eastwick are all great films, Cher was fantastic in all of them, and of course, she made a comeback in music. The reuniting with Sonny on Letterman was another highlight. Maybe, in a way, Cher thought she would never top her success of '87 (although the Believe comeback was probably equally as impressive).

Kinda weird that The Secret of My Success made more than Lethal Weapon since Secret seems a bit forgotten nowadays.

R120, thanks for that enlightening comment.

by Anonymousreply 122June 6, 2019 1:23 AM

As an actress, she was very limited. Of course she would be, with her, uh, unusual looks. I never saw what the big deal was about "Moonstruck." She didn't deserve to win an Oscar for that piece of fluff.

by Anonymousreply 123June 6, 2019 1:27 AM

And that's why Cher won the Oscar. She had a banner year.

Obviously the Academy disagreed R123. She got a standing O.

by Anonymousreply 125June 6, 2019 1:38 AM

R125 Because they never award overated shit...

by Anonymousreply 126June 6, 2019 1:41 AM

Wow, Cher starred in two of the Top Ten films of 1987: 'Moonstruck' and 'The Witches of Eastwick.'

by Anonymousreply 127June 6, 2019 1:42 AM

"Obviously the Academy disagreed [R123]. She got a standing O."

The Academy is a crock of shit. They've awarded so many undeserving Oscars it's ridiculous. And if they stood for her it was probably because they were thinking "what a lucky gal. She won an Oscar for THAT silly movie."

by Anonymousreply 128June 6, 2019 2:25 AM

Glenn Close or Holly Hunter should have won instead of Cher. Both gave much better, stronger performances. I think Cher winning was just one of those fluke Academy Award wins that occur sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 129June 6, 2019 2:27 AM

Please. Cher totally deserved her Oscar in 1987. Her performance in Moonstruck is terrific.

But all 5 performances were excellent and worthy. It was a tough year. But Cher's win was deserving.

by Anonymousreply 130June 6, 2019 2:38 AM

Her range was LIMITED!

by Anonymousreply 131June 6, 2019 3:11 AM

[quote]Glenn Close or Holly Hunter should have won instead of Cher.

Although probably made up, apparently some actress/show biz type lamented to Lillian Gish, "Oh, Lillian, it's terrible you weren't nominated for "The Whales of August", you were brilliant!" to which Miss Gish replied, "It's fine, it saves me the trouble of losing to Cher!"

by Anonymousreply 132June 6, 2019 5:15 AM

She also did a horrendous series of commercials for workout places. One of them went: "There we were, three grown women, dancing in the street in shorts and high heels. We knew we looked hot".

by Anonymousreply 133June 6, 2019 5:40 AM

R133 Cher also had workout videos . Early 90’s cher was such a mess , what was she thinking?

To be fair, after Fonda's success there was a period of time where almost everyone made one. I just had a flash back to my sisters working out in the basement to workout records (Joannie Greggains).

Estelle Getty and Marky Mark also had workout videos. Pretty much anyone popular at the time tried to cash in on the fitness craze.

I can see Cher going back to movies after this tour ends.

by Anonymousreply 139June 6, 2019 3:21 PM

"I can see Cher going back to movies after this tour ends."

The only roles that would be suitable for her would be ones where she would play a drag queen or tranny.

by Anonymousreply 140June 6, 2019 8:30 PM

[quote]Yeah some singers think they can act

Cher set out to be an actress. That was her ambition. It never occurred to her to be a singer, because she didn't think she was particularly good at singing. That was Sonny's idea, not her. And she forced him to perform with her, because she was too embarrassed to appear on stage by herself. Cher was raking it in with her early 80s Vegas residency, but wasn't happy, and gave it up to pursue an acting career. Somehow landing a role in "Come Back To The 5 and Dime" on Broadway, then also appearing in the film, and so her acting career began.

by Anonymousreply 141June 6, 2019 8:45 PM

Cher has succeeded at just about everything she has pursued. She's very talented. She has a great voice--and even at this age when other singers' voices have faded, Cher's voice is still remarkably strong. She's a great actress. And Cher has great stage presence. People are drawn to her. Cher has the "it" factor. Always has.

by Anonymousreply 142June 6, 2019 9:11 PM

Cher is all things to all people and is made entirely of goodness and rose petals!!!

by Anonymousreply 143June 6, 2019 9:13 PM

Cherilyn Sarkisian sounds better than Cher.

by Anonymousreply 144June 7, 2019 1:58 AM

It's true, though. You can't say that Cher has failed at, well, anything.

Singing, acting, touring, even directing (she directed one of the segments in those If These Walls Talk films.

by Anonymousreply 145June 7, 2019 2:03 AM

Does Cher write her own songs?

by Anonymousreply 146June 7, 2019 2:06 AM

She wrote an entire album of her songs, but normally no. So what?

by Anonymousreply 147June 7, 2019 2:17 AM

"You can't say that Cher has failed at, well, anything."

Well, her tv show show failed. After Sonny and Cher separated, both Sonny and Cher tried to go solo on their own tv shows. Both flopped. The debut of Cher's show made a splash because it had some big name guest stars (Bette Midler, Elton John) but ultimately viewers did not want to see Cher without Sonny (or Sonny without Cher). So even though they were divorced, they got back together for another tv series, but that didn't last long, either. On their first show together after the divorce Sonny said to the audience "well, I guess you all know that Cher and I aren't married anymore." That was expected to get a laugh; instead the audience let out a long, collective "AWWWWWWW!" Cher froze, but Sonny came back quickly, saying to the audience "You mean you DIDN'T KNOW?"

Cher's TV show was not a flop. It lasted 2 seasons and won 4 Emmys. Cher didn't like doing the show alone.

Cher had a bad experience on Mermaids with the first director (Frank Oz) that kind of soured her on movie making for a bit. Then when she got interested again her momentum was gone and she was older and odder looking.

Sonny said at the time that she had a short attention span and she probably lost interest after the Oscar. Plus he joked that she had trouble taking direction from men since they all reminded her of him. She really only got along with Mike Nichols and Robert Altman. I don't know about Norman Jewison but it was always noted that she thanked her hairdresser at the Oscars but forgot her director.

by Anonymousreply 152June 7, 2019 7:50 AM

She loved Norman, and Zeferllli as well.

by Anonymousreply 153June 7, 2019 8:16 AM

Cher has written several songs. I absolutely love this one.

"Cher's TV show was not a flop. It lasted 2 seasons and won 4 Emmys. Cher didn't like doing the show alone."

Oh, please. If it had been a hit it would have lasted longer. And the Emmys were for art direction (it was a very flamboyant show), costumes (Bob Mackie certainly deserved it), and a guest spot by Cloris Leachman. SHE never won awards for it. And if she "didn't like doing the show alone" then why did she split from Sonny in the first place? She just wasn't cut out to succeed in a tv series on her own.

by Anonymousreply 155June 8, 2019 1:56 AM

Honey, there no point in arguing with stupid.

Now Dolly's show- that was a $44 million flop Too bad because Iove Dolly.

by Anonymousreply 156June 8, 2019 2:36 PM

Man, Jeannie Greggins has serious butter face. My goodness.

Anyway, Moonstruck is another glorified Lifetime TV movie on steroids. Glenn and Holly were robbed. I like Cher, but she was punching way above her class against those two. Cher played the game, she played Tinseltown politics and that helped her win. It’s a TV movie about a bunch of wops.

by Anonymousreply 157June 18, 2019 4:26 PM

Yes, Moonstruck was so bad it won an Oscar for best original screenplay based on Cher's playing the game.

by Anonymousreply 158June 18, 2019 4:31 PM

Wops? How classless.

by Anonymousreply 159June 18, 2019 6:00 PM

I remember Cher's tv show as a hit, and I know it was, at least at first. Sonny's solo show flopped hard and fast, I think they yanked it after a few episodes. The problem with Cher's show might've been that she got blamed for the breakup with Sonny. That wasn't true at all, but Cher was cast as the bitch that left Sonny after he made her famous. She made him famous too, a two way street there. So that was a low point in Cher's career, until her comeback with "Take Me Home."

by Anonymousreply 160June 18, 2019 7:55 PM

Her show made splash at first (it had a lot of big name guest stars) but the ratings dropped off quickly. If it had been a bona fide hit it was would have lasted longer. And if it had really been a hit she never would have done another show with Sonny.

by Anonymousreply 161June 18, 2019 8:24 PM

Cher said it was too much work to do a TV show alone, and I have no reason to doubt her. Sonny made most of the decisions on their own show- she just had to show up.

In any case, she moved on to Vegas and $300k a week so it worked out in any case for her.
