Do you have a favorite tiara? I think mine is the Faberge Tiara from Empress Eugenie of France
Today it's this one which I just saw on another thread, Queen Victoria's emerald and diamond tiara, now owned by the Duke? Earl? of Fife.

I think this tiara which was once worn by the Queen Mother is too big for Camilla's head. It's so large that it looks like a CROWN not a TIARA. Her hairstyle does nothing for the jewels either.

There's a very simple, very modern "tiara" that doesn't look like a tiara and I can't find a picture of it. It's not in the British Royal Family's collection. It's some other royal entity. There are just large diamonds on multiple "sticks" of platinum. It's very modern and doesn't look like a tiara at all, more like fashion accessory, but it's classified as a tiara. Sweden's Braganza Tiara was made for the Empress Amelie of Brazil, who was a granddaughter of Maximilian I of Bavaria and the Empress Josephine. After Amelie died, it was passed it to her sister, also named Josephine, who married King Oscar I of Sweden (who was actually French). Queen Silvia can't wear it for extended periods because it gives her a headache.

by Anonymous | reply 98 | November 11, 2018 9:48 PM |
R98, that tiara would be very pretty, if they'd given her hair enough volume to hide the fucking framework.
Now here's a gal who knows how to style her hair to show off her tiara! Yeah, the huge puffy hairstyles of the Edwardian era were just as good as the bouffants of the 1960s for providing a proper platform for a tiara, plus the Edwardian ladies got to wear three to five necklaces as well, plus every brooch and bracelet they could find. Damn, those were the days for "a lot of look"!

I always liked this cameo tiara on Princess Victoria of Sweden, but more because it suits her than because it's beautiful in its own right.
She's a big, hearty, square-jawed Valkyrie of a woman, dainty little headpieces look ridiculous on her but this one looks just right.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | November 12, 2018 1:42 AM |
I count one tiara, one pair of earrings, three diamond necklaces, and ten brooches on Princess Alexandra here, and I'm pretty sure there are more diamond rings, bracelet, pins, and shoe ornaments out of the camera frame.
Would you call this look spectacular, or ghetto?
by Anonymous | reply 101 | November 12, 2018 1:51 AM |
My new favorite tiara is a Dutch tiara that hadn’t been seen in generations until a couple of weeks ago. Queen Elizabeth II hosted the King and Queen Of the Netherlands for a State Dinner. Queen Maxima wore the Stuart Tiara which contains the Stuart Diamond that had belonged to Queen Mary II. When Queen Mary II died the diamond when back to the Netherlands. Queen Ann sued to get the Stuart Diamond back but she lost her case and the diamond stayed in the Netherlands. This tiara was last seen in public worn by Queen Juliana. Queen Beatrix never wore it publicly.
Queen Maxima wore it to show the ties between the 2 kingdoms. Queen Maxima wore it with a teal colored gown because the diamond is a shade of blue. If that wasn’t enough she also wore a huge magnificent diamond brooch at her waist. Needless to say the British Royal Family couldn’t compete and Kate was wearing Queen Alexandra pearl and diamond wedding necklace and the the Lover’s Knot Pearl Tiara that Diana famously wore. I would be great full if someone posted a pic of Maxima wearing the Stuart Tiara. Queen Elizabeth had to be like “What the Hell?”

Yes, r104, that's the Stuart Tiara which can be worn with or without the enormous Stuart stone. I would call it more massive and imposing than truly beautiful but it is surely The Tiara That Cannot Be Ignored.

I like aquamarines but the Queen's aquamarine tiara is my least favorite. The stones are too large. I know they are semi-precious and therefore cheaper but giant honking stones on a delicate framework look unbalanced.

The British are always taking some other countries’ possession and not wanting to give them back. It’s nice to see those shrewd Dutch beat the British at their own game. Queen Maxima was quite bold to wear it. I think the Dutch royals have the best jewels. I guess it’s to be expected that 3 Regnant Queens in a row starting with savy Queen Wilhelmina.

[quote]I think the Dutch royals have the best jewels.
I think it rivals the British royals' at least. The collection is (pardon the cliché) well curated—just really remarkable pieces minus filler like QEII's aquamarine parure.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | November 12, 2018 2:34 PM |
Yes, R95, I think that must be it. Although I thought the person wearing it had dark hair in the picture I saw back when folks were speculating about what Meghan would wear. I also don't recall so much side structure. In the photo I saw it appeared as if diamonds suspended on platinum sticks were floating above the wearer's hair. I thought the majority of the "workings" were hidden.
I've most likely misremembered that photo because I can't imagine there's another tiara out there anywhere close to the Sea Foam. I think it's lovely, as is the wearer, and I appreciate your sleuthing, R95! And you, too, R80! I appreciate your efforts as well.

I really love the Girls of Britain and Ireland Tiara. It has a classic delicacy and QEII looks stunning in it. I also think she wore the Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara the best. Elizabeth II is inately regal and had a handsome beauty that worked well with large jewels and complicated sets.
The Stuart Tiara is stunning and very bold. You have to be a large woman, like Maxima, to carry it off. I think Elizabeth II would have managed it well. Didn't they try to get it back?

Hi R150, That tiara is apparently from a private Spanish family, dates to 1915, it's in a Christie's catalog at this link, you'll need to scroll down a bit but you can see the whole page of the catalog on it. It's beautiful.
