Wow, would hate to lose Martin Sheen this way! Much of Malibu is on fire ....that's really scary

They're gone, this is so sad...

by Anonymousreply 3November 10, 2018 3:02 AM

It’s like the French Revolution. I have no sympathy for the rich of Malibu. They’ve lived a very good life while normal people have suffered. Burn, baby, burn.

This could all make Charlie Sheen spiral into drug addiction again.

Then again, maybe he tossed a burning joint into some tall grass and stated it all.

by Anonymousreply 8November 10, 2018 3:11 AM

I don't know how he raised the horrible kid, Charlie. But I always thought Martin was a pretty nice guy. Charlie is like Trump, he hates women, did Martin raise him that way or did Hollywood teach him that.

According to twitter, the reception in that area comes and goes

SO are they okay then? Are they standing on the seashore with other people?

by Anonymousreply 14November 10, 2018 3:15 AM

Martin had a near-fatal heart attack 42 years ago, brought on by the stress of filming Apocalypse Now. At his age, a raging fire induced heart attack would definitely do him in.

by Anonymousreply 15November 10, 2018 3:16 AM

R9 that's a fascinating question. I believe in some people, the peer and social environment can play a bigger part in character development than parents and family. But who knows in this case.

by Anonymousreply 16November 10, 2018 3:17 AM

It would do me in.

by Anonymousreply 17November 10, 2018 3:18 AM

What is Charles trying to promote?

See R7 for the tweet or Google it yourself

There was a similar massive fire like this in Malibu 30 years ago, and Jerry Brown sent the National Guard to protect Linda's house.

Or was that from the floods that followed?

by Anonymousreply 23November 10, 2018 3:27 AM

I know he's not a favorite here, but James Woods is using his twitter to pass along information about missing people from the fire.

Lots of elderly people.

It's like reading a fast moving scenario of the fire.

R2 what a bizarre, rude post - even for you!

And yes, I hate to admit it but James Woods is pro-actively using his recently-re-instated twitter feed for good.

by Anonymousreply 25November 10, 2018 3:34 AM

Too bad it's not Charlie

by Anonymousreply 26November 10, 2018 3:36 AM

By the way, the beach may not be the safest place, apparently yachts were burning offshore.

by Anonymousreply 27November 10, 2018 3:36 AM

Plus, this:

As the Woolsey Fire made its way across Ventura County, it burned around the Santa Susana Field Lab, a site that has been considered “significantly contaminated” by decades of rocket and nuclear reactor testing and a partial nuclear meltdown in 1959. There was alarm among some residents who worried smoke created near the hazardous site could prove particularly dangerous, but authorities from the California Department of Toxic Substances Control who oversee the site say there is no evidence that smoke from the area around the SSFL is any more dangerous than other wildfire smoke.

Concerns about the SSFL site spread quickly around social media as people in the area saw burn maps that showed flames passing the facility and users shared a Forbes article with the headline “California’s Woolsey Fire Now Threatening Malibu Went Through the Site of a Nuclear Accident First”–which states in the body of the story that the concerns about radioactive ash were unsubstantiated. (They say...)

Burning embers can stay airbound for 5 or more minutes and they can land hundreds of meters away. The big problem is they can easily be pulled into air conditioning units which is why they should never be operated near a fire.

by Anonymousreply 29November 10, 2018 3:41 AM

There were devastating wildfires in Greece a few weeks ago. I recall at a seaside resort many people swam into the ocean to escape the flames and smoke. Many of them died, though I don't know of what (fatigue? drowning? smoke inhalation? heat?)

by Anonymousreply 30November 10, 2018 4:07 AM

r30, over 120 thousand died.

by Anonymousreply 31November 10, 2018 4:09 AM

What! 120,000???

by Anonymousreply 32November 10, 2018 4:12 AM

R32, that's in Greece , not Malibu...what part of that do you not understand?

by Anonymousreply 33November 10, 2018 4:15 AM

R32 that other poster was incorrect. The Greek fires claimed 99 lives.

by Anonymousreply 34November 10, 2018 4:16 AM

R31 it was 99 not 120,000

by Anonymousreply 35November 10, 2018 4:18 AM

R33, JFC the part about 120,000 people perishing in Greece.

Thanks for clarifying R34 and R35.

by Anonymousreply 36November 10, 2018 4:20 AM

It's tweets like that that make Martin and Janet Sheen ignore their son. They're old. They're tired.

by Anonymousreply 43November 10, 2018 5:29 AM

Reporter @KevinTakumi found him and has a pic of him on his account being interviewed.

by Anonymousreply 44November 10, 2018 5:34 AM

He said in the interview that he and his wife have been at Zuma Beach since 9:30 am, and that they'll probably sleep in their car tonight. He also said they didn't save anything from the house except some food to eat.

Finally, he's been living in Malibu since 1970 and said this is the worst fire they've seen.

by Anonymousreply 45November 10, 2018 5:40 AM

Overall he was really calm though. Just thankful.

by Anonymousreply 46November 10, 2018 5:40 AM

The good news is Gaga is safe in her Hollywood Hills house - the old Frank Zappa house.

by Anonymousreply 47November 10, 2018 5:55 AM

I just copied this headline from The DM: California reels as the most destructive wildfire in the state's HISTORY kills at least NINE in the north razing 6,500 homes, while 250k evacuate Malibu as flames rage over 200 square miles in total

I know there's a separate thread but I'm wondering if his house has been swallowed up by the flames.

by Anonymousreply 48November 10, 2018 6:01 AM

Per DM, Martin Sheen is found on a beach used for evacuation. He is safe... good news.

by Anonymousreply 49November 10, 2018 6:32 AM

I’ve grown very numb to the mass shootings but the wildfires are different. We only report on human lives but millions of wildlife animals (even insects) and domestic pets, horses, and barnyard animals, are being burnt alive. I think that’s probably the worst way to die. The plants and trees, some hundreds of years old, turned to ash. More carbon in the air, less oxygen. I’m safe on the East Coast, where it’s been raining too much all year (if only we could transfer our excess rain to California) but I’m feeling so sad and scared. It’s overwhelming. These are the kinds of fires that would be remembered for centuries or even millennia—events of biblical proportions— except they’re happening every few months. It’s as if every season brought a new Vesuvius or Krakatoa eruption.

by Anonymousreply 50November 10, 2018 10:55 AM

He was safe, he was hiding behind his son Emilio's career. Nothing gets passed that.

by Anonymousreply 51November 10, 2018 1:53 PM

whoever said 120,000 died should go die in a Greece fire.

by Anonymousreply 52November 10, 2018 2:30 PM

[quote] There were devastating wildfires in Greece a few weeks ago. I recall at a seaside resort many people swam into the ocean to escape the flames and smoke. Many of them died, though I don't know of what (fatigue? drowning? smoke inhalation? heat?)

Someone here must know?

by Anonymousreply 53November 10, 2018 2:33 PM

R53, from a BBC article, the hot ash and flying debris forced people to swim far out, and there were large waves and currents, and they were in there for hours and unfortunately didn't make it.

by Anonymousreply 54November 10, 2018 2:40 PM

Found safe, living in their 2018 Mercedes Benz 600S. Nibbling al fresco on a picnic pac from Gelsons. They send their love.

by Anonymousreply 55November 10, 2018 2:40 PM

R31's number of fatalities in the Greek fires is pure BS.

by Anonymousreply 56November 10, 2018 2:55 PM

Color me stupid but if Martin & his wife were able to evacuate at 9:30 am yesterday then why are they sleeping in their car at Zuma Beach?

They have money. Why not drive into Hollywood or LA proper & rent a hotel?

by Anonymousreply 57November 10, 2018 3:07 PM

Charlie is the Sheen family Bad Seed. Nothing to do with Martin and Janet Sheen as parents. They are great people.

by Anonymousreply 58November 10, 2018 3:19 PM

r23.....wrong....shes told that story multiple times in interviews.....Brown REFUSED to send help (it was the flooding) because he didnt want it to appear he was showing favoritism towards her because they were dating at the time.

by Anonymousreply 59November 10, 2018 3:19 PM

I think the roads are blocked, r57.

Also, I heard an interview with a lady stuck on the side of the road with her SUV full of cats. She said all the rooms within a hundred miles were booked.

by Anonymousreply 60November 10, 2018 3:23 PM

R57, maybe they went down and expected to be let back into their home at some point, then got trapped there? I don't know how trapped people were at the beach, but I got the impression that they were stuck there due to blocked off roads.

by Anonymousreply 61November 10, 2018 3:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 65November 10, 2018 3:54 PM

Those poor animals at R63 are probably going to suffocate. Why just leave them there? They could fit in a pickup or maybe even an suv in a pinch. I’d sure try to stuff them in whatever vehicle I had and get them the hell out of there.

by Anonymousreply 66November 10, 2018 3:57 PM

They're stuck on the beach due to road closures, r66.

by Anonymousreply 67November 10, 2018 3:59 PM

Could they walk along the beach to move further away from the fire? I mean, the people with their animals in tow, not the animals by themselves.

by Anonymousreply 68November 10, 2018 4:27 PM

The llamas were there yesterday and I have to assume someone has moved them since the picture first showed up. They were left on the beach with other animals who were too big (horses, mostly) to evacuate because of traffic, and the beach was somewhat secure. It's actually a specific evacuation zone for large animals.

He had to get there by foot. Cher said he was able to get her mom, her mom's dog, her sister, their dog & Cher's 2 cats out.

Her mom is a frail 92 y/o. No way she could walk the distance from her house to Cher's to get to the car.

Maybe he hired a helicopter? What a nightmare.

by Anonymousreply 71November 10, 2018 5:03 PM

Charlie has offered to let his parents live with him. Martin & Janet were then spotted running back into the flames.

I feel bad about the animals though.

Real estate experts: Will land be less expensive to buy after this, or is it still desirable because it's ocean adjacent?

by Anonymousreply 75November 10, 2018 5:36 PM

R75, I’m not a real estate expert, but I’ve been down there. There’s a lot of ramshackle older places there wedged between other homes, both older and newer. They are wildly expensive.

My guess is, either some rich neighbor will gladly buy the burnt lot next door and add on to their house, or some rich Persian will buy two burnt down lots and build a big tacky mansion there.

The second alternative is somebody gladly buys a burnt down lot, clears it and can build a brand new house where there are never any vacant lots. It’s a chance of a lifetime for someone with money.

But will the owners of a gutted house do well? Not as well as they could with a house on it. My guess is most will rebuild.

There will probably be some older people who bought their houses many years ago whose insurance might not cover everything, or maybe they’re worried about living there due to floods and fires as they age. They might be forced out because they’re land poor.

by Anonymousreply 76November 10, 2018 5:50 PM

Someone please help me to understand.... if you owned land there & built a reinforced concrete house with reinforced concrete roof (ie, very little directly combustible material on the outsite) and had Florida-type impact-glass & steel shutters (the kind that roll down or across... not the kind that take hours to bolt on), would your house be generally OK?

I know burning embers fly, but I'm getting the impression that typical construction methods in that area (mostly wood, with large unprotected windows) makes things a lot worse than a comparable fire might be in a "concrete jungle" like Miami Beach, even IF Biscayne Bay were a burning forest hurling burning embers towards hurricane-hardened concrete homes & skyscrapers.

by Anonymousreply 77November 10, 2018 5:53 PM

It’s a lot easier to get a loan or mortgage on a “house,” whatever condition it’s in, than a vacant lot. The type of loan you get for a vacant lot is different and it’s harder to get. But these people are very rich and it won’t matter unless they’re heavily leveraged. Which some of them probably secretly are.

Martin Sheen seems to be one of the good guys.

by Anonymousreply 80November 10, 2018 6:01 PM

R79 yes, but I have always been curious as to what the fuck happened with Charlie Sheen. Usually dysfunctional, violent men come from dysfunctional violent fathers (look at Ryan O Neal 's son) but in this case the two men seem polar opposites.

by Anonymousreply 81November 10, 2018 6:03 PM
