I really liked it and the whole late 19th century NYC setting. It made me read the book and I liked it too.
Anybody else have any suggestions for something similar to watch or read?

I guess The Knick or the Murdoch Mysteries.

“The Angel of Darkness,” a book by Caleb Carr that is a sequel to the Alienist.
The original plan was for each book to be told from the point of view of a different person. The Alienist was from the point of view of John, the Angel of Darkness was from the point of view of Stevie, the street kid Dr Kreizler took in. That was a lot better than it sounds. He grew up in a rough neighborhood and it’s from the point of view of a teen that’s seen it all. A side plot is his first love, a burny-blowing (coke addicted) thirteen year old hooker.
The main story is about a nurse who later becomes a nanny. She kills the children in her charge, but they can’t stop her because she covers her tracks very well.

I second The Knick. Stephen Soderbergh directed and Clive Owen stars. Soderbergh did a good job of presenting 1900 Medical Hospital in a very realistic and true-to-life form . The stuff they did back then to patients were unbelievable and sometimes horrific.

Devil in the White City - it’s about serial killer HH Holmes. I wish they would adapt this book into a film or tv series.
From the Inside Flap:
“Bringing Chicago circa 1893 to vivid life, Erik Larson's spellbinding bestseller intertwines the true tale of two men--the brilliant architect behind the legendary 1893 World's Fair, striving to secure America's place in the world; and the cunning serial killer who used the fair to lure his victims to their death. Combining meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling, Erik Larson has crafted a narrative with all the wonder of newly discovered history and the thrills of the best fiction.“

To be fair r8, Luke Evans apparently has an AMAZING life.

No other show has such an emphasis on boy whores.

I am surprised this got made. I mean it doesn't bother me. But how does entertainment business get any kids to play such characters, nowadays.

Are they going to make Season 2? Supposedly, the sequel to the book is better.

This show's not on the Netflix on *my* TV,

Yes, and with a new showrunner.
[quote]Former House of Cards co-showrunner Frank Pugliese will take the reins of The Angel of Darkness, TNT's sequel to The Alienist.
The core cast of The Alienist — Daniel Bruhl, Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning — is set to return for the follow-up, which like its predecessor is based on a novel by Caleb Carr. The new story finds Fanning's Sara Howard, now running her own detective agency, coming to Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Bruhl) and John Moore (Evans) for help in tracking down a killer.

I agree with you R7. “The Devil in the White City” would make an excellent series adaptation ala “The Alienist”. I remember reading years ago that DiCaprio had optioned it for a theatrical film, but it’s never progressed so I don’t know if he still owns the option.
It’s much more suited to a series than a 2-hr film. The parallel storylines of the Chicago World’s Fair and the modern progress it showcased coupled with America’s (probable) first serial killer who preyed on the women lured to Chicago for the jobs the new progress offered would be engrossing, if cast and director(s) can handle the task.

Yah! I always liked the novel and enjoyed the series. I'm glad they will have season 2 of The Alienist. I've always found it that period of time fascinating and was bummed out when Cinemax did not renew The Knick. Hopefully, Teddy Roosevelt pops up in the background as he's gone on to greater and bigger things.

Taboo with Tom Hardy. I had to see it on DVD through Netflix.

Fun fact: Caleb Carr's father was Lucien Carr, the murderous lover of Allen Ginsberg.

The Alienist series suffered from poor dialogue and an odd tone of delivery. The performances were better than the material and the story was good and the production was sumptuous. Plus, Sean Young! Playing a bat shit crazy New York 400 doyenne. I LOVED that. But I think they deliberately mislead us about her son. I'm too uninterested to go back and check.
