For Patrick Stewart it would be "Wild Geese 2". A few months back I watched a youtube clip of PS speaking at a Trek convention saying this was the worst movie he did, but he signed on because he was offered almost exactly the same amount he needed to do a home repair.

I have to think that Marisa Tomei would like to scrub the latest Purge film from her resume because she totally sucked in it, the suckage of which was an enormous disappointment to me since I have been her steadfast champion since My Cousin Vinny (YES, she did deserve the Oscar for that indelible, hilarious performance). She's one of my favorite actresses and delivers over and over (hence, additional Oscar noms after Vinny), so I was truly shocked and appalled by her terrible performance in the Purge flick. Not that the film was a masterpiece (far from it), but her performance was perfunctory and awkward. Her character was a social scientist, the film's "resident intellectual," and she could not pull it off convincingly. Granted, she had crap dialogue to deliver, but part of being an incredible actor is the ability to turn shit in to gold when necessary, to rise above the circumstances--neither of which she did. Late in the film she literally has to utter to herself the cliche reckoning "What I have done?" in a moment of epiphanous guilt for her role in the deaths of scores of people and the likely future brutalization of millions, and she did it with the depth of a frying pan. Wooden, wan and fake. Yes, we've seen that scene and heard that line in countless movies before, so it's completely trite, but that's all the more reason why an actor must totally sell it. Otherwise they tarnish their reputation, which was certainly the case here.
I'd love to hear her explain why she couldn't deliver in this "paycheck" movie. Her failure in it almost makes me forget the dreadful thriller (The Watcher, 2000) she made with Keanu Reeves which was dull, far from suspenseful, and did nothing to elicit strong performances from anyone in its cast. That's the only prior performance of hers that I did not find strong, but the Purge performance clearly trumps that now. If you do happen to watch the latest Purge and need to cleanse your memory of Marisa's performance in it, check out Happy Accidents, an indie from 2000; it features one of her most engaging performances and remains one of the best films of her career. A terrific, well-written, thought-provoking film.

I'd be tempted to say "Thank God It's Friday," because even though my lone directorial effort remains a misunderstood disco masterpiece that deserves to be enjoyed by DataLoungers in perpetuity, I think it cost me--the only long-term gig I secured after that, a decade later, was a forgotten show on Fox ("True Colors") when it was a fledgling network. I tend to think that the show was canceled after the second season because I died in the middle of Season 2, and clearly the show could not go on without its matriarchal glue. They were able to pull that off with my friend Val and her show, but obviously that wouldn't be the case with my absence. After all, some things ARE irreplaceable (despite what the Beyonce girl says).

Dear R16, bless you--I wondered if anyone would notice my little trick! I learned that from my father--at his store he had one of those light up sign boxes to which you affix letters to spell out words, and he would always put one letter upside down. When a customer would bring it to his attention it served as confirmation that people were actually paying attention to the sign. Listen, Toots, when you eventually reach my neck of the woods, I'm taking you out for a nice big dinner. You can order whatever you want (I'll put it on Allan Carr's tab, like in the old days!).

Meryl hated on Still Of The Night when she was on that awful Andy Cohen show but I actually thi k it's a decent thriller and she looked hot in it. She and Glenn should both scrub House of the Spirits. Boring, racist, miscast, overlong and a box office bomb.
Joan should scrub Trog.
Mirren scrubs The Tempest. Or Arthur. Or Love Ranch.
Aniston would be spoiled for choice.

Goop would probably scrub “A View from the Top,” which she called “A View from My Ass.” If she dislikes both equally, at least she made decent money on “Shallow Hal.”
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 4, 2018 1:56 AM |
A View from the Top could have been a decent movie, but after the training school, it didn't go anywhere. Plus, her character was as boring as her humble surroundings. That doesn't make for an interesting experience for the viewer. With a couple of tweaks, they could have made it into a watchable feel-good woman-empowerment movie. One opportunity lost was a flight attendant's hilarious commentary on passengers, like in a montage sequence.
As you can tell, I really tried to like it but it really is a view from her ass.

Personally, I didn't think the permed shag was helping Rock out in terms of making any love connections, but, you know, what could I say? r44 lmao I love that shitty movie. Remember when all teens smoked in '80s films? And drove expensive cars?
James Avery had a deservedly cult-classic scene at the DMV - "buckle up, Son, it's the REAL WORLD out here". The lady at the DMV desk was iconic, as well; "you musn't FUCK with the Department of Motor Vehicles; we can make your life a living HELL.". The scene at the end where the Merc gets crushed by a steel beam dropped from a crane is a Destructo-movie denounement bar-none. Oh, and the Commy sister is fun.
Haim gave a charming performance in LTD as did Graham, and she later went on to do other popcorn-fare so idk why she hated it so much. LTD was the last movie Feldman was entertaining, watchable and cute in (*James Avery voice* I said GOD-DAMN). Per DL-archive lore; wasn't this one the 'Two Coreys' movie where according to the director the boys kept disappearing between takes to shoot up and fool around (with each other?) "It's like you hang out in your trailers and come right to the set". Uhhhhh, ok, sounds pro Feldog.

McDowell and Mirren doing a commentary for Caligula was one of the most surprising special features on any DVD/Blu-Ray release of all time. It honestly made me love them for being such good sports.
Another one that surprised me was Melissa Leo. In the mid 80's, she did a pretty lousy (though not unwatchable) horror flick called Deadtime Stories and it just came out on Blu-Ray a year or two ago. She actually gives a fairly lengthy interview about it on the disc. I was shocked. She seemed to have a great sense of humor about it, too. Really made me like her. Also, the movie has a nice shot of Scott Valentine's naked ass (which is one of the reasons I'd rent it all the time as a kid).

I wish some actors knew how much more likable they become when they can come in and discuss the flops. I was so happy when Elizabeth Berkley finally talked about Showgirls with good humor. When The Lonely Lady came to Blu-Ray, Pia Zadora gave a long interview about it. I loved that.
I wish Faye Dunaway would get a sense of humor about Mommie Dearest, because, like it or not, when she dies, that'll be one of the first things they'll print - "Star of Bonnie and Clyde and Mommie Dearest Dead"

Last month, she discussed it with GQ when they had her talk about her most iconic movie roles.
I think she also feels closer to the film since doing that "Who Do You Think You Are?" show a few years back and discovering that she is a descendant of one of the accused Salem witches.

Daphne Zuniga took The Dorm That Dripped Blood off her resume. In The Initiation, she's billed as "introducing Daphne Zuniga." Not sure why she did that. They're both little known slasher flicks and it's not like she's awful in either of them. She didn't have anything to be ashamed of. I'm sure she takes The Initiation off of her resume these days, too, even though it's actually rather good. It was Vera Miles, Clu Gulagher, and Hunter Tylo as well. Really fun 80's slasher flick.
