Some call it the best thriller series ever.
Julia Roberts' TV debut Homecoming is earning raves
by Anonymous | reply 244 | July 23, 2019 8:39 PM |
How exactly is this her "TV debut?"
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 1, 2018 4:00 PM |
She was always good at picking good material. She could teach Halle Berry on how to do that.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 1, 2018 4:25 PM |
r1, Die in a grease fire you obtuse cunt.

The first season of Mr. Robot was fantastic and Sam Esmail is a very gifted director and writer, so I have high hopes for this show.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 2, 2018 2:53 AM |
I’m loving The Julia Roberts Programme so far. Sam Esmail is on fire.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 2, 2018 11:55 PM |
well, if "qz" says so...
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 3, 2018 12:24 AM |
I’m four episodes in and it’s pretty fantastic.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 3, 2018 1:33 AM |
I'm enjoying it, but Julia's costar -- her SUPER-THICK ratty Korean wig -- is driving me crazy.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 3, 2018 2:31 AM |
I'm watching Ep 3.
The scene where Julia Roberts doesn't remember anything, but doesn't want to admit it, so she's coyly pumping her ex for info was very well played.
I forgot how good an actress Julia Roberts can be. She was very nuanced and believable in that scene.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 3, 2018 2:52 AM |
I’m praying that Julia doesn’t show her bush.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 3, 2018 2:53 AM |
R11 It will be an enormous wig to match the one on her head.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 3, 2018 2:59 AM |
Why is r1 being a cunt by asking a legitimate question based on conflicting facts?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 3, 2018 7:28 AM |
Yeah, not even close
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 3, 2018 7:31 AM |
Yeah, certainly not obtuse, either
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 3, 2018 11:34 AM |
I watched the first episode wasn’t impressed. Will watch more later. I hate it when people wear bad wigs in movies.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 3, 2018 2:09 PM |
Sam Esmail is brilliant. I love the look and feel of his shows.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 3, 2018 2:10 PM |
All gays love Dermot. I don’t get the Julia hate. I have always liked her.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 3, 2018 2:16 PM |
I always thought she's a better actress than the choice of the material that made her *the* megastar during her heyday.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 3, 2018 3:02 PM |
of course she's a good actress. She might be cunty or hated on here, but she was always a charismatic and good actress, even in the worst kind of dreck. Deal with it.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 3, 2018 4:37 PM |
She can't be happy with how she looks in this.
It is the first time she's look old.
And the wig makes her look like an old person going through chemo.

Bobby Cannavale - ALWAYS a pleasure to ogle him!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 3, 2018 5:46 PM |
Is this a limited series or drama series? Trying to figure out which Emmy award Ms. Roberts will win.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 3, 2018 5:56 PM |
I just finished the first season and it is fantastic. Roberts and Cannavale will definitely be remembered with Emmy nominations.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 3, 2018 7:45 PM |
I marathoned this last night. I loved how Esmail directed the episodes, was happy to see Sissy Spacek (I didn't know she was in this) and enjoyed Stephen James and Jeremy White's acting. However, Julia looked horrible and there was nothing about her character that made Walter, Colin, or Anthony's attraction to her believable to me.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 3, 2018 8:28 PM |
Roberts is adequate in this. But still kinda doing her wounded bird routine.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 3, 2018 8:29 PM |
I think she is great in this and the weird chemistry between her and Stephan James is quirky and compelling.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 3, 2018 9:49 PM |
Looking forward to seeing him in If Beale Street Could Talk also.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 3, 2018 9:51 PM |
It’s great (4 episodes in) but I find the half hour format jarring. And she looks awful. A thin face does not age well.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 3, 2018 10:12 PM |
She is a beautiful woman but the wig.and at a certain age having 0 body fat is not a good thing.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 4, 2018 12:38 AM |
Great first season but I don’t understand what will happen in the second season.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 4, 2018 12:43 AM |
What was the bit at the very end (after credits in last ep)? With the Asian woman who had been a receptionist?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 4, 2018 12:47 AM |
Is this based on a famous book ?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 4, 2018 1:55 AM |
I'm shocked to say this, but Julia Roberts is a great actress. How she gets 10 different thoughts to cross her face at once is amazing.
But, speaking of that face . . . I'm watching in 4K and the way they light her face shows the many long hairs on it. Yes, it's just menopause, but I can't imagine she's happy with that type of realism.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 5, 2018 1:20 AM |
It’s based on a serialized podcast R34.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 5, 2018 2:15 AM |
The wig is styled better on 2nd episode but it is way too thick to be real they did little effort to make Julia look good. Even though Julia is beautiful she is still 50.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | November 5, 2018 2:30 AM |
[quote]What was the bit at the very end (after credits in last ep)? With the Asian woman who had been a receptionist?
She is using the drug they gave the PTSD troops like a Xanax roll-on, to forget what a cunt she is.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 5, 2018 2:41 AM |
[quote]they did little effort to make Julia look good.
It's almost as if they went out of their way to make her look bad. Those 4K cameras are brutal. And the yellow lighting they used didn't help.
And the wig and lack of makeup did her no favors either.
If she saw the clips and OKed the, then I am very impressed with her lack of vanity.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 5, 2018 2:43 AM |
I was watching and thinking who is that ugly/hot guy ? I know have seen him somewhere before. Then remembered years ago when I watched Shameless.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 5, 2018 5:04 AM |
I’m only 4 episodes in but I gather Heidi seems like a good caring person but she is going along with something evil. Maybe they made her look bad like they did Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 5, 2018 5:24 AM |
Really great show, and saying this not having been a fan Julia Roberts. Compelling story and acting from everyone. Was able to finish the whole season in an afternoon.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | November 5, 2018 6:02 AM |
Television already. And so young.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | November 5, 2018 7:58 AM |
For those who have seen it: is it really a thriller/is it exciting? The one trailer I saw just made it seem like one of a million tv “dramas” out there...
by Anonymous | reply 44 | November 5, 2018 8:29 AM |
First two episodes are slllooooowwww, despite only being half an hour and mostly credits. Central mystery doesn’t really interest me as I don’t care about the military or its employees. Esmail didn’t make this nearly interesting enough. Julia is lethargic.
I’m out.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | November 5, 2018 9:19 AM |
I made it through episode #1. I don't know if I can watch any more. Like r45, I find anything military less than compelling. And then there are those wigs.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 5, 2018 9:31 AM |
Emmys for everyone ! Great cast. Aiming to be Hitchcockian and almost succeeds. Trust me be patient just the scenes between Bobby and Julia are worth it Stephan James is so handsome. One major character literally disappeares and we get no explanation.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | November 5, 2018 10:00 AM |
This series must be incredible for some of the chronically hateful people here to be giving Julia Roberts kudos.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | November 5, 2018 10:08 AM |
I wouldn’t say so much Hitchcockian (although he sure likes to reference Hermann’s music) as DePalma. It’s not nearly sophisticated enough to reference Hitchcock.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 5, 2018 10:12 AM |
Enjoyed the first half, but the last half really fizzled. It's also one of those shows, that the more you think about it the more the plot holes are glaringly obvious and the less the whole thing made any sense. IMO, it didn't help that Roberts and Cannavale were miscast.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 5, 2018 10:33 AM |
Yes Julia is automatically hated here for some reason. All the split screen reminded me of DePalma but it wasn’t as stylized.
Was Heidi and Walter in love with each other ? I thought but Julia and Bobby were great.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 5, 2018 10:58 AM |
Spoiler alert.
Did Walter remember her at the end, or no? I loved the show and thought it was Julia’s best work, possibly ever.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | November 5, 2018 11:01 AM |
Julia really was excellent in this - Her best work since Erin Brokevich - The last episode was anticlimactic for me - She will receive Golden Golden, SAG and Emmy noms for this - AMAZING Stephen James was awesome and so handsome
by Anonymous | reply 53 | November 5, 2018 11:57 AM |
Very eco-conscious of them to re-purpose the psychiatrist office set from The Sopranos.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | November 5, 2018 12:13 PM |
I really liked the show and the acting, but I'm sort of bored by the reveal.
And how would someone reach across the table and fuck with your silverware without you noticing until after they had left?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | November 5, 2018 2:05 PM |
I'm only half way through and enjoying it so far. I just don't like the half hour format. I'd prefer an hour episode or even (God forbid) a 2 hour meeting.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | November 5, 2018 2:07 PM |
...two hour movie....
Halfway in I don't really get Hitchcock though. His stuff was funnier and more kinky..

is this a 1 off or was it written for several seasons? I liked the music and the performances but the story is lacking.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 5, 2018 10:42 PM |
R52, it was ambiguous.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | November 5, 2018 11:02 PM |
I enjoyed all the closeups of JR. I doubt she has ever done so much intimate face work as asked for her. I don't remember.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 5, 2018 11:19 PM |
Walter was okay the guy from Shameless wasn’t and that was revealed early.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 5, 2018 11:34 PM |
As I watched more, I wondered if Julia would look better with fuller hair. Her face is crazy thin.
I normally can’t stanx her but thought she was great here.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | November 5, 2018 11:54 PM |
I normally can’t stanx her either.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | November 5, 2018 11:57 PM |
She looked fine in later episodes even though the long hairs on the face came late in the series. She was executive producer they must have watched early screening not in 4K Maybe she never worries about cinematography like Barbra Streisand.
I don’t remember any series about evil corporations and I hate to admit I have had more than 1 boss like Bobby C. It wasn’t perfect but I love it and the cast and the always good Julia gives the performance of her career.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 6, 2018 9:27 AM |
Why didn't Julia use her own hair? The wig with the bangs looks awful and makes her face look older and drawn.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | November 7, 2018 12:26 AM |
I watched it and it was okay. I don't understand all the rave reviews. The black actor was really good and very handsome.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | November 7, 2018 1:40 AM |
Why is Bobby C supposed to be so evil? Seems like a typical corporate stereotype and not Mr. Evil personified. A charmer, a liar, a manipulator.
Spoiler -
I'm not sure the Army would be so thrilled with the reprogramming and redeployment. Maybe. The Corp is definitely the evil for developing a product and sort of creating the market for it, for which maybe nobody asked. My impression of the military these days is that its rather CENTRIST - neither far write wing-nut nor social justice leftie. But it seems to have a solid foundation in recent years for respect for diversity and human rights of its own members. Black ops - well know knows.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 7, 2018 12:19 PM |
* far right
Bobby definitely is not the evil at the top. That's a fun part of the show. I thought the last scene was hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | November 7, 2018 12:21 PM |
S1 of Mr. Robot was perfect. S2 made my head hurt.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | November 7, 2018 12:21 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 73 | November 7, 2018 8:59 PM |
This tiime a diverse cast is a very good one.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | November 8, 2018 2:42 AM |
Stephan James has charisma, could be the next Denzel Washington.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | November 8, 2018 2:46 AM |
R71, there some similar themes as Maniac, but I think Maniac handled them much better.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 8, 2018 3:13 AM |
Filming the present scenes in small frame was gimmicky.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | November 8, 2018 3:15 AM |
It’s nowhere near the level of Mr. Robot. In general, quite disappointing. We’re clearly past peak TV and on the wane now.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | November 8, 2018 3:15 AM |
Yes I agree. Peak TV peaked a few years ago.

the small frame idea was used by Xavier Dolan in Mommy 5 years ago. I hate when creative people steal other people's ideas: at least let us forget about them first!

It was tedious and the ending was very disappointing. And Julia Roberts was OK.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | November 9, 2018 1:29 AM |
IMO the bad work on her face was very distracting.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | November 9, 2018 1:42 AM |
She’s good, but the whole thing was underwhelming. It had two or three more episodes than it should have had.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | November 9, 2018 2:36 AM |
I think while you are watching it’s great but upon reflection it. Doesn’t hold up.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | November 10, 2018 5:08 PM |
^you could say that about 90% of tv series, tho
by Anonymous | reply 90 | November 10, 2018 7:25 PM |
It needed MORE PLOT. And more action. Also Bobby needed to be fucking Julia in several episodes and HOT - no instant shame.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | November 10, 2018 9:02 PM |
Sissy Spacek was wasted.
The style spent long moments on nothing happening and the music was good during these passages. But at the end maybe they took up too much time at the expense of more plot.

What was the point of poisoning Walter? She could have killed him. Her boss told her not to do that and she looked more like a villain than her boss. The more realistic ending would have been to see Walter paralyzed but the happy ending was unrealistic.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | November 10, 2018 9:43 PM |
I give it a meh. Julia is not / never has been a good actress. It’s suspenseful but by the end, it seemed too fake and sunny. Her wigs were awful. C+ at best.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | November 10, 2018 9:45 PM |
I thought it was OK. I don't think it was all that suspenseful. Roberts is good in it but she looks like shit in it. Nobody will be calling her "pretty woman" for this.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | November 10, 2018 9:46 PM |

Wow, I didn't know that Stephan James was only 24 years old. He acts so much older and has a lot of presence onscreen.
He's also getting notices for the movie, If Beale Street Could Talk. There's already a campaign for Best Actor.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | November 10, 2018 10:53 PM |
Quality? This is a two hour TV movie stretched into 5 hours.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | November 10, 2018 11:01 PM |
one thing i really liked about this show was the soundtrack: very Bernard Herrmann
by Anonymous | reply 107 | November 10, 2018 11:27 PM |
They obviously were trying as hard as they could to not let her look like a movie star. I loved Stephan James in this. Loads of charisma and *****spoiler alert***. I felt like the last scene with the fork potentially implies he'd figured this thing out. I thought that since the scene where he didn't remember the Titanic sequal that perhaps he was starting to fuck with her. He'd already been plenty alerted by the the white kid spitting out medication that something was amiss. It's entirely possible he started to do the same. Plus he claimed he'd already eaten which coulda meant he was avoiding the food and it was never established he continued to eart the whole plate she handed him. It was good twisty fun. Julia was good but James stole the show. And he's a sexy little fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | November 10, 2018 11:41 PM |
The music and production values were very cinematic. Agree James will be a movie star. I'd be surprised if our Julia didn't get a slice of that.

by Anonymous | reply 113 | November 13, 2018 2:07 AM |
No one sees it that way except for you R97, including the critics. It’s a swing and a miss from Esmail, who it seems may have had only one good season of TV in him.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | November 13, 2018 2:10 AM |
They were using Bernard Herman directly R107, from Vertigo and others, also the soundtrack of Dressed to Kill and other DePalma movies.

R114, it’s received solid reviews.

[quote]R118 really, [R115]? they used the original Herrmann music? Isn't that prohibitive, budget wise?
The music is all from movie soundtracks, mostly from the 70s and 80s. In addition to what’s been mentioned, there’s also KLUTE, CAPRICORN ONE, THE PARALAX VIEW, CARRIE, ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN...many older dramas/thrillers.
From article:
[quote]Esmail didn’t want to use these classic scores as a reference point, or temp music: He wanted to use the actual scores.
[quote]“I just started thinking, this is going to be really unfair to ask a music composer to ape David Shire’s ‘Conversation’ theme,” said Esmail. “That’s just ridiculous, or to ask someone to ape Michael Smalls’ theme from ‘Klute.’”
[quote]Esmail broached the subject with music supervisor Maggie Phillips when she first interviewed for the job. She found the idea discomfiting. “People have licensed a score piece here or there, but there’s no real paper trail for older scores like there is for the other music we license,” said Phillips. “There was no way of estimating costs, at all, and the people we were licensing from wouldn’t even know. The NBC-Universal clearance team and my team, no one had ever done this before.”

I wonder why Sissy Spacek agreed to do this... i know it's a prestige show, but her part was nothing. Marianne Jean-Baptiste at least got some fierce "angry mama bear" scenes.

R125 the agent who spent the whole series trying to find answers. There was an ominous phone call . He was in his office maybe to get his stuff. They cut to something else then cut back to the office and we see a chair spinning like someone left very suddenly. That is the last we see of him and I thought it implied something bad has happened.

^it implies it did his job, did it well, but the Powers That Be are evil so he'll probably be sacked or worse. Or he knows that already and resigned. The point is: you cant beat those assholes, no need to see/say more.

I thought maybe the bad wig was a homage to Barbra Stanwyck in Double Indemnity Billy Wilder insisted she wear one.

It was a typical Esmail misdirection show, with his signature stylized framing, color manipulations, slow pacing, and oversize titlecards ala Mr. Robot. Good but not great.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who I usually enjoy watching, was terrible in this. Primarily due to her terrible accent, which as stated above, was some kind of Creole hatched job. She went in and out of the accent and it never sounded consistent or realistic. It took me out of the story, because typically I enjoy her acting so much that it was disturbing how bad her accent was.

by Anonymous | reply 148 | November 23, 2018 3:54 PM |
[quote]R127 I wonder why Sissy Spacek agreed to do this
What else does Spacek have TO DO? I mean, I love her, but there aren’t a ton of roles for actresses of her generation, and then there’s great competition for what’s available within that group.
Plus, in addition to what a part might allow them to perform, actors often take roles just to remain visible (and therefor considered for other projects.)

Just finished Homecoming. While it works hard to ramp up the suspense, like so many other shows, the payoff isn’t worth it.
After that last episode I wondered why I had wasted 5 hours on that.
Julia Roberts’ wig is terrible
by Anonymous | reply 150 | November 24, 2018 3:56 PM |
What R150 said. While the acting (Stephan James ought to break out from this) and production values were solid, I found it to be tedious and underwhelming.

by Anonymous | reply 159 | November 26, 2018 1:17 AM |

It's well done but literally goes nowhere. The nding was a huge letdown and totally predictable.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | November 26, 2018 1:21 AM |
After 4 episodes, I don't care. So far it's building to nothing. And the title credits to each episode blatantly play other movie soundtracks. What is that about? Not just somewhat similar but note for note identical.

by Anonymous | reply 164 | November 26, 2018 1:23 AM |
I don't think the ending went nowhere. I think it's a set up for the next season since they were guaranteed 2. I still think the James character was telling her something in that last scene. I don't think it was just a flippant cutesy play on their previous interactions.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | November 26, 2018 1:26 AM |
You also know absolutely nothing about the other guys in this homecoming center. This show is full of fucking holes.

by Anonymous | reply 167 | November 26, 2018 1:48 AM |
Which makes for a very dull show, r167.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | November 26, 2018 1:50 AM |
R166. The people working there are basically absolute robots. If you need to know anything about any of them it would be the other counselor who role played with them during "training". But I don't think it's there yet. You learned plenty about the Cannavale character when he pursued her and his frequent phone calls. Esmail as stated above is obviously leaving you to learn things along with her since she doesn't know them herself. It's not written for network where they over explain ahead of the character so the audience knows something the character doesn't. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it's an obvious storytelling choice. She's almost treated as though she's being treated herself
by Anonymous | reply 169 | November 26, 2018 1:50 AM |
The guy that leaves is mentioned as a previous patient.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | November 26, 2018 1:52 AM |
Halfway through the first season and zero character development. Cannavale is ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | November 26, 2018 1:54 AM |
It's all talking on the phone, or dreary no-resolution dialogue in scene after scene.

Poop. This sounds interesting. I certainly can find Julia Roberts to be annoying but I don't totally hate her nor refuse to watch her in anything. I'd like to see this but I gave up my Amazon Prime a couple of months ago. Don't think there is much chance of Amazon selling and Netflix buying. Maybe I can get Prime again in a few months.

"Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who I usually enjoy watching, was terrible in this. Primarily due to her terrible accent, which as stated above, was some kind of Creole hatched job. "
And didn't her son not eve have much of an accent at all. Why couldn't she just speak with the generalized American accent of her son. He's from Florida; there's plenty of everyday Af-Ams in Flordia, they're not all of Caribbean descent or "Creole."
by Anonymous | reply 180 | November 26, 2018 2:47 AM |

Using the opening music from DRESSED TO KILL there injected tension, as well. A lot of viewers know that musical sequence ends with an attack, so it was unnerving...like, “I know something’s going to jump out at me!”
by Anonymous | reply 184 | November 26, 2018 3:21 AM |
I liked how when the episodes ended and the credits started to roll the action would continue behind them. The episode with the investigator in the file room with the light switching on and off is a very Hitchcockian shot.

I'm seriously starting to think that George W Bush left a lot of kids behind. Namely, those complaining that the show is "dull as fuck", "going nowhere", etc. In any case, why are you watching this? I'm sure Greg Berlanti has churned out something for you to watch on CW.

R191: i think that meant that the technology behind the drugs was evolving so that the product was becoming even more "friendly", without the implications of taking a pill. The memory and emotions killing product was on its way to become like over the counter stuff, easy to use and available everywhere. At least that was my take on the last scene.
by Anonymous | reply 197 | November 27, 2018 2:43 PM |
I really liked the series and James is awesome and hot as hell! I really have a problem with Julia Roberts in general just due to her overexposure and hype. For someone who the public considers a great beauty she has become hard to look at and almost weird looking. The wig did not help. I think she is way too thin too. But, she is damn good in this.
PS - the scene where she is eating gnocchi with James, as it is wrapping up, has a haunting melody. It sort of sounds like Air, but it is actually Vangelis's Reve. Beautiful.

There are plenty of medications made to be absorbed through the skin, the Nicorette patch, for one. My sister wears an estrogen patch since her hysterectomy. I knew a woman who, many years ago, was prescribed a Fentanyl patch. And the new male contraceptive is made to rub on the skin.
Get it now?

My parents are from Haiti (I was born there but raised in NYC). Marianne’s was terrible, although the vocabulary was correct.
Why bother making her character Haitian if she couldn’t handle it? Did they think no one would notice? Maybe we find out she was faking in season 2.
I enjoyed the show despite that one misstep.

That's because the characters are utterly unmemorable and there is the barest semblance of a plot. Add to that tedious, elliptical dialogue and you have show no one will remember or watch again.

Because it is dull as fuck, r187. It's one half-hour episode after the other, during which maybe one thing will happen. And there's no momentum from episode to episode. But do congratulate yourself for thinking you're watching something deep and probing.
by Anonymous | reply 220 | December 2, 2018 3:55 PM |
I watched the first half during a plane ride two weeks ago, and I found those episodes maddeningly boring. Had I not been captive, I would have found something else to do. I finished the series this morning at home. The second half is much more interesting plotwise. I thought the performances were strong. The series feels more like a character sketch than a fully realized story, with the author/director more concerned with structural experimentation than anything. It’s like a lot of what I have seen on Netflix in that way—experimental and dark to the point of being bleak, and not quite finished or else focusing more on mood than on story. It’s very much like the sorts of things many of us workshopped in my fiction writing MFA program.
I didn’t mind it, but the series relies on compelling performances as a kind of smoke-and-mirrors cover for lackluster writing.
by Anonymous | reply 221 | December 30, 2018 5:12 PM |
seeing her acting in the trailers (commercials) is nauseating. i'll avoid this one at all costs because of it.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | December 30, 2018 5:16 PM |
I have always liked her. She’s a charismatic movie star if nothing else, but I think she is also a good actor. The term “pretty woman” certainly doesn’t pertain to the 51 year-old version of her face—“pretty” to me means soft and pleasant and she is sharp-angled and pretty unusual looking with a bunch of bold features stuck onto one big head—but so what? She is past middle age and she can now be an interesting character actor instead of an innocuous romantic lead. Her face does have a masculine quality now and she should be able to use that to her advantage if producers are willing to cast her in good roles. As I said in R221, I don’t see this series as a fully realized story but it serves as a great extended audition reel for an older actress who is ready to play more serious and nuanced roles.

R237 is right. It's weird. I liked it a lot. I liked the acting, the style, the pace it moved at, the half hour format, it was a good story, and I liked the ending. But it's true. It was a big ball of nothing. I expected some big conspiracy or unfolding but it never happened. I thought once they sneaked out of the facility and went on that drive I was thinking oh ok somethings going to get going here. Still nothing. The strangest part though is that I liked it.

one of those series who should have paid their editors/DOP millions, and just peanuts for the writers. It's beautiful and stylish, covering the big nothing underneath. Alas, this happens a lot with so called "prestige television": it's shit in a very nice box. All of it.

OK here's a point I wanted to ask others. Mostly concerning Sissy. I kept wondering why she took a BIG NOTHING part until I started to think that she was in on it and will be the biggest part in season two. When Julia was having flashbacks of coming home and needing to be helped out of her car, Sissy turns to someone off camera and hisses "look what you've done". It was only a split second, you had to really be watching to catch it, but I was like WTF. I knew it. Plus the mother just seemed so sinister and unhelpful in helping her to get her memory back.

Wow. What a come-down.
When the show was originally announced, it was stated Julia was going to star in both seasons (the only reason they ordered two seasons right off the bat in the first place let's be honest). I guess she didn't realize how much work TV would be (or didn't like the people involved) and quit so, ever since they announced she was leaving, they've been claiming she was only ever meant to be in the first season. There aren't enough Sure, Jan gifs in the world for that.
