Julia Roberts' TV debut Homecoming is earning raves

Some call it the best thriller series ever.

by Anonymousreply 244July 23, 2019 8:39 PM

How exactly is this her "TV debut?"

by Anonymousreply 1November 1, 2018 4:00 PM

She was always good at picking good material. She could teach Halle Berry on how to do that.

by Anonymousreply 2November 1, 2018 4:25 PM

r1, Die in a grease fire you obtuse cunt.

The first season of Mr. Robot was fantastic and Sam Esmail is a very gifted director and writer, so I have high hopes for this show.

by Anonymousreply 5November 2, 2018 2:53 AM

I’m loving The Julia Roberts Programme so far. Sam Esmail is on fire.

by Anonymousreply 6November 2, 2018 11:55 PM

well, if "qz" says so...

by Anonymousreply 7November 3, 2018 12:24 AM

I’m four episodes in and it’s pretty fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 8November 3, 2018 1:33 AM

I'm enjoying it, but Julia's costar -- her SUPER-THICK ratty Korean wig -- is driving me crazy.

by Anonymousreply 9November 3, 2018 2:31 AM

I'm watching Ep 3.

The scene where Julia Roberts doesn't remember anything, but doesn't want to admit it, so she's coyly pumping her ex for info was very well played.

I forgot how good an actress Julia Roberts can be. She was very nuanced and believable in that scene.

by Anonymousreply 10November 3, 2018 2:52 AM

I’m praying that Julia doesn’t show her bush.

by Anonymousreply 11November 3, 2018 2:53 AM

R11 It will be an enormous wig to match the one on her head.

by Anonymousreply 12November 3, 2018 2:59 AM

Why is r1 being a cunt by asking a legitimate question based on conflicting facts?

by Anonymousreply 13November 3, 2018 7:28 AM

Yeah, not even close

by Anonymousreply 14November 3, 2018 7:31 AM

Yeah, certainly not obtuse, either

by Anonymousreply 15November 3, 2018 11:34 AM

I watched the first episode wasn’t impressed. Will watch more later. I hate it when people wear bad wigs in movies.

by Anonymousreply 16November 3, 2018 2:09 PM

Sam Esmail is brilliant. I love the look and feel of his shows.

by Anonymousreply 17November 3, 2018 2:10 PM

All gays love Dermot. I don’t get the Julia hate. I have always liked her.

by Anonymousreply 18November 3, 2018 2:16 PM

I always thought she's a better actress than the choice of the material that made her *the* megastar during her heyday.

by Anonymousreply 19November 3, 2018 3:02 PM

of course she's a good actress. She might be cunty or hated on here, but she was always a charismatic and good actress, even in the worst kind of dreck. Deal with it.

by Anonymousreply 20November 3, 2018 4:37 PM

She can't be happy with how she looks in this.

It is the first time she's look old.

And the wig makes her look like an old person going through chemo.

by Anonymousreply 22November 3, 2018 5:33 PM

Bobby Cannavale - ALWAYS a pleasure to ogle him!

by Anonymousreply 23November 3, 2018 5:46 PM

Is this a limited series or drama series? Trying to figure out which Emmy award Ms. Roberts will win.

by Anonymousreply 24November 3, 2018 5:56 PM

I just finished the first season and it is fantastic. Roberts and Cannavale will definitely be remembered with Emmy nominations.

by Anonymousreply 25November 3, 2018 7:45 PM

I marathoned this last night. I loved how Esmail directed the episodes, was happy to see Sissy Spacek (I didn't know she was in this) and enjoyed Stephen James and Jeremy White's acting. However, Julia looked horrible and there was nothing about her character that made Walter, Colin, or Anthony's attraction to her believable to me.

by Anonymousreply 26November 3, 2018 8:28 PM

Roberts is adequate in this. But still kinda doing her wounded bird routine.

by Anonymousreply 27November 3, 2018 8:29 PM

I think she is great in this and the weird chemistry between her and Stephan James is quirky and compelling.

by Anonymousreply 28November 3, 2018 9:49 PM

Looking forward to seeing him in If Beale Street Could Talk also.

by Anonymousreply 29November 3, 2018 9:51 PM

It’s great (4 episodes in) but I find the half hour format jarring. And she looks awful. A thin face does not age well.

by Anonymousreply 30November 3, 2018 10:12 PM

She is a beautiful woman but the wig.and at a certain age having 0 body fat is not a good thing.

by Anonymousreply 31November 4, 2018 12:38 AM

Great first season but I don’t understand what will happen in the second season.

by Anonymousreply 32November 4, 2018 12:43 AM

What was the bit at the very end (after credits in last ep)? With the Asian woman who had been a receptionist?

by Anonymousreply 33November 4, 2018 12:47 AM

Is this based on a famous book ?

by Anonymousreply 34November 4, 2018 1:55 AM

I'm shocked to say this, but Julia Roberts is a great actress. How she gets 10 different thoughts to cross her face at once is amazing.

But, speaking of that face . . . I'm watching in 4K and the way they light her face shows the many long hairs on it. Yes, it's just menopause, but I can't imagine she's happy with that type of realism.

by Anonymousreply 35November 5, 2018 1:20 AM

It’s based on a serialized podcast R34.

by Anonymousreply 36November 5, 2018 2:15 AM

The wig is styled better on 2nd episode but it is way too thick to be real they did little effort to make Julia look good. Even though Julia is beautiful she is still 50.

by Anonymousreply 37November 5, 2018 2:30 AM
What was the bit at the very end (after credits in last ep)? With the Asian woman who had been a receptionist?

She is using the drug they gave the PTSD troops like a Xanax roll-on, to forget what a cunt she is.

by Anonymousreply 38November 5, 2018 2:41 AM
they did little effort to make Julia look good.

It's almost as if they went out of their way to make her look bad. Those 4K cameras are brutal. And the yellow lighting they used didn't help.

And the wig and lack of makeup did her no favors either.

If she saw the clips and OKed the, then I am very impressed with her lack of vanity.

by Anonymousreply 39November 5, 2018 2:43 AM

I was watching and thinking who is that ugly/hot guy ? I know have seen him somewhere before. Then remembered years ago when I watched Shameless.

by Anonymousreply 40November 5, 2018 5:04 AM

I’m only 4 episodes in but I gather Heidi seems like a good caring person but she is going along with something evil. Maybe they made her look bad like they did Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched.

by Anonymousreply 41November 5, 2018 5:24 AM

Really great show, and saying this not having been a fan Julia Roberts. Compelling story and acting from everyone. Was able to finish the whole season in an afternoon.

by Anonymousreply 42November 5, 2018 6:02 AM

Television already. And so young.

by Anonymousreply 43November 5, 2018 7:58 AM

For those who have seen it: is it really a thriller/is it exciting? The one trailer I saw just made it seem like one of a million tv “dramas” out there...

by Anonymousreply 44November 5, 2018 8:29 AM

First two episodes are slllooooowwww, despite only being half an hour and mostly credits. Central mystery doesn’t really interest me as I don’t care about the military or its employees. Esmail didn’t make this nearly interesting enough. Julia is lethargic.

I’m out.

by Anonymousreply 45November 5, 2018 9:19 AM

I made it through episode #1. I don't know if I can watch any more. Like r45, I find anything military less than compelling. And then there are those wigs.

by Anonymousreply 46November 5, 2018 9:31 AM

Emmys for everyone ! Great cast. Aiming to be Hitchcockian and almost succeeds. Trust me be patient just the scenes between Bobby and Julia are worth it Stephan James is so handsome. One major character literally disappeares and we get no explanation.

by Anonymousreply 47November 5, 2018 10:00 AM

This series must be incredible for some of the chronically hateful people here to be giving Julia Roberts kudos.

by Anonymousreply 48November 5, 2018 10:08 AM

I wouldn’t say so much Hitchcockian (although he sure likes to reference Hermann’s music) as DePalma. It’s not nearly sophisticated enough to reference Hitchcock.

by Anonymousreply 49November 5, 2018 10:12 AM

Enjoyed the first half, but the last half really fizzled. It's also one of those shows, that the more you think about it the more the plot holes are glaringly obvious and the less the whole thing made any sense. IMO, it didn't help that Roberts and Cannavale were miscast.

by Anonymousreply 50November 5, 2018 10:33 AM

Yes Julia is automatically hated here for some reason. All the split screen reminded me of DePalma but it wasn’t as stylized.

Was Heidi and Walter in love with each other ? I thought but Julia and Bobby were great.

by Anonymousreply 51November 5, 2018 10:58 AM

Spoiler alert.

Did Walter remember her at the end, or no? I loved the show and thought it was Julia’s best work, possibly ever.

by Anonymousreply 52November 5, 2018 11:01 AM

Julia really was excellent in this - Her best work since Erin Brokevich - The last episode was anticlimactic for me - She will receive Golden Golden, SAG and Emmy noms for this - AMAZING Stephen James was awesome and so handsome

by Anonymousreply 53November 5, 2018 11:57 AM

Very eco-conscious of them to re-purpose the psychiatrist office set from The Sopranos.

by Anonymousreply 54November 5, 2018 12:13 PM

I really liked the show and the acting, but I'm sort of bored by the reveal.

And how would someone reach across the table and fuck with your silverware without you noticing until after they had left?

by Anonymousreply 55November 5, 2018 2:05 PM

I'm only half way through and enjoying it so far. I just don't like the half hour format. I'd prefer an hour episode or even (God forbid) a 2 hour meeting.

by Anonymousreply 56November 5, 2018 2:07 PM

...two hour movie....

Halfway in I don't really get Hitchcock though. His stuff was funnier and more kinky..

by Anonymousreply 57November 5, 2018 2:10 PM

bump

by Anonymousreply 58November 5, 2018 10:02 PM

is this a 1 off or was it written for several seasons? I liked the music and the performances but the story is lacking.

by Anonymousreply 59November 5, 2018 10:42 PM

R52, it was ambiguous.

by Anonymousreply 60November 5, 2018 11:02 PM

I enjoyed all the closeups of JR. I doubt she has ever done so much intimate face work as asked for her. I don't remember.

by Anonymousreply 61November 5, 2018 11:19 PM

Walter was okay the guy from Shameless wasn’t and that was revealed early.

by Anonymousreply 62November 5, 2018 11:34 PM

As I watched more, I wondered if Julia would look better with fuller hair. Her face is crazy thin.

I normally can’t stanx her but thought she was great here.

by Anonymousreply 63November 5, 2018 11:54 PM

I normally can’t stanx her either.

by Anonymousreply 64November 5, 2018 11:57 PM

She looked fine in later episodes even though the long hairs on the face came late in the series. She was executive producer they must have watched early screening not in 4K Maybe she never worries about cinematography like Barbra Streisand.

I don’t remember any series about evil corporations and I hate to admit I have had more than 1 boss like Bobby C. It wasn’t perfect but I love it and the cast and the always good Julia gives the performance of her career.

by Anonymousreply 65November 6, 2018 9:27 AM

Why didn't Julia use her own hair? The wig with the bangs looks awful and makes her face look older and drawn.

by Anonymousreply 66November 7, 2018 12:26 AM

I watched it and it was okay. I don't understand all the rave reviews. The black actor was really good and very handsome.

by Anonymousreply 67November 7, 2018 1:40 AM

Why is Bobby C supposed to be so evil? Seems like a typical corporate stereotype and not Mr. Evil personified. A charmer, a liar, a manipulator.

Spoiler -

I'm not sure the Army would be so thrilled with the reprogramming and redeployment. Maybe. The Corp is definitely the evil for developing a product and sort of creating the market for it, for which maybe nobody asked. My impression of the military these days is that its rather CENTRIST - neither far write wing-nut nor social justice leftie. But it seems to have a solid foundation in recent years for respect for diversity and human rights of its own members. Black ops - well know knows.

by Anonymousreply 68November 7, 2018 12:19 PM

* far right

Bobby definitely is not the evil at the top. That's a fun part of the show. I thought the last scene was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 69November 7, 2018 12:21 PM

S1 of Mr. Robot was perfect. S2 made my head hurt.

by Anonymousreply 70November 7, 2018 12:21 PM

just started watching it. Intriguing, but i detect more than a hint of Netflix's Maniac...right? Anyway, Stephan James is so gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 71November 7, 2018 6:42 PM

R71 His shirtless pics on Instagram are yummy

by Anonymousreply 72November 7, 2018 8:53 PM

Oh fuck. Now I have to watch this. Sounds like a great cast.

by Anonymousreply 73November 7, 2018 8:59 PM

This tiime a diverse cast is a very good one.

by Anonymousreply 74November 8, 2018 2:42 AM

Stephan James has charisma, could be the next Denzel Washington.

by Anonymousreply 75November 8, 2018 2:46 AM

R71, there some similar themes as Maniac, but I think Maniac handled them much better.

by Anonymousreply 76November 8, 2018 3:13 AM

Filming the present scenes in small frame was gimmicky.

by Anonymousreply 77November 8, 2018 3:15 AM

It’s nowhere near the level of Mr. Robot. In general, quite disappointing. We’re clearly past peak TV and on the wane now.

by Anonymousreply 78November 8, 2018 3:15 AM

Yes I agree. Peak TV peaked a few years ago.

by Anonymousreply 79November 8, 2018 9:27 AM

Yes some of it looked like it was shot on your cell phone.

by Anonymousreply 80November 8, 2018 12:03 PM

never been able to stomach a thing that freek has been in

little miss mary sunshine and perfection of big star bulllshit.

NO

by Anonymousreply 81November 8, 2018 12:08 PM

she goes in every few years for subtle face work

the smart ones, like her and meryl and martha stewart have it done in small ways but effective. never look like stretched cunts.

by Anonymousreply 82November 8, 2018 12:10 PM

I don’t know about Meryl. She didn’t look so good in MM2.

by Anonymousreply 83November 8, 2018 12:16 PM

the small frame idea was used by Xavier Dolan in Mommy 5 years ago. I hate when creative people steal other people's ideas: at least let us forget about them first!

by Anonymousreply 84November 8, 2018 4:17 PM

she looks awful

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 85November 9, 2018 12:46 AM

It was tedious and the ending was very disappointing. And Julia Roberts was OK.

by Anonymousreply 86November 9, 2018 1:29 AM

IMO the bad work on her face was very distracting.

by Anonymousreply 87November 9, 2018 1:42 AM

She’s good, but the whole thing was underwhelming. It had two or three more episodes than it should have had.

by Anonymousreply 88November 9, 2018 2:36 AM

I think while you are watching it’s great but upon reflection it. Doesn’t hold up.

by Anonymousreply 89November 10, 2018 5:08 PM

^you could say that about 90% of tv series, tho

by Anonymousreply 90November 10, 2018 7:25 PM

It needed MORE PLOT. And more action. Also Bobby needed to be fucking Julia in several episodes and HOT - no instant shame.

by Anonymousreply 91November 10, 2018 9:02 PM

Sissy Spacek was wasted.

The style spent long moments on nothing happening and the music was good during these passages. But at the end maybe they took up too much time at the expense of more plot.

by Anonymousreply 92November 10, 2018 9:05 PM

it was beautifully shot

by Anonymousreply 93November 10, 2018 9:42 PM

SPOILERS ****

What was the point of poisoning Walter? She could have killed him. Her boss told her not to do that and she looked more like a villain than her boss. The more realistic ending would have been to see Walter paralyzed but the happy ending was unrealistic.

by Anonymousreply 94November 10, 2018 9:43 PM

I give it a meh. Julia is not / never has been a good actress. It’s suspenseful but by the end, it seemed too fake and sunny. Her wigs were awful. C+ at best.

by Anonymousreply 95November 10, 2018 9:45 PM

I thought it was OK. I don't think it was all that suspenseful. Roberts is good in it but she looks like shit in it. Nobody will be calling her "pretty woman" for this.

by Anonymousreply 96November 10, 2018 9:46 PM

It’s brilliant, the best new series since The Handmaid’s Tale. Some of you Philistines wouldn’t know quality if it buttfucked you.

by Anonymousreply 97November 10, 2018 9:48 PM

It was understated and yet twee. Odd.

by Anonymousreply 98November 10, 2018 9:50 PM

I think she was an expert on the medicine. She knew it wouldn’t kill him but she did make that trip to see if he was okay

by Anonymousreply 99November 10, 2018 9:59 PM

Or she made the trip to get some BBC.

by Anonymousreply 100November 10, 2018 10:01 PM

Cock-loving white masters wouldn't have let that big Mandingo slave cock go to waste. One shudders!

by Anonymousreply 101November 10, 2018 10:03 PM

Ha! wrong thread but works here.

by Anonymousreply 102November 10, 2018 10:04 PM

Damn! He was handsome. Please let him do movies with full frontal nudity !

by Anonymousreply 103November 10, 2018 10:14 PM

Can't watch this, her hair isn't to my liking.

by Anonymousreply 104November 10, 2018 10:32 PM

Wow, I didn't know that Stephan James was only 24 years old. He acts so much older and has a lot of presence onscreen.

He's also getting notices for the movie, If Beale Street Could Talk. There's already a campaign for Best Actor.

by Anonymousreply 105November 10, 2018 10:53 PM

Quality? This is a two hour TV movie stretched into 5 hours.

by Anonymousreply 106November 10, 2018 11:01 PM

one thing i really liked about this show was the soundtrack: very Bernard Herrmann

by Anonymousreply 107November 10, 2018 11:27 PM

They obviously were trying as hard as they could to not let her look like a movie star. I loved Stephan James in this. Loads of charisma and *****spoiler alert***. I felt like the last scene with the fork potentially implies he'd figured this thing out. I thought that since the scene where he didn't remember the Titanic sequal that perhaps he was starting to fuck with her. He'd already been plenty alerted by the the white kid spitting out medication that something was amiss. It's entirely possible he started to do the same. Plus he claimed he'd already eaten which coulda meant he was avoiding the food and it was never established he continued to eart the whole plate she handed him. It was good twisty fun. Julia was good but James stole the show. And he's a sexy little fuck.

by Anonymousreply 108November 10, 2018 11:41 PM

The music and production values were very cinematic. Agree James will be a movie star. I'd be surprised if our Julia didn't get a slice of that.

by Anonymousreply 109November 10, 2018 11:46 PM

btw, do we have some gossip on mr. James? who's had him?

by Anonymousreply 110November 11, 2018 12:12 AM

Season 2: Heidi drives around each restaurant looking for malpositioned forks as a clue.

by Anonymousreply 111November 13, 2018 12:52 AM

BUMP

by Anonymousreply 112November 13, 2018 2:02 AM

Her wig is really awesome. It looks so much like a wig it is impossible to understand why every character she meets doesn;t say to her, "What's with the wig?"

by Anonymousreply 113November 13, 2018 2:07 AM

No one sees it that way except for you R97, including the critics. It’s a swing and a miss from Esmail, who it seems may have had only one good season of TV in him.

by Anonymousreply 114November 13, 2018 2:10 AM

They were using Bernard Herman directly R107, from Vertigo and others, also the soundtrack of Dressed to Kill and other DePalma movies.

by Anonymousreply 115November 13, 2018 2:11 AM

R114, it’s received solid reviews.

by Anonymousreply 116November 13, 2018 2:26 AM

R115 - Really!? wow OK and why not?

by Anonymousreply 117November 13, 2018 9:19 AM

really, r115? they used the original Herrmann music? Isn't that prohibitive, budget wise?

by Anonymousreply 118November 13, 2018 3:44 PM

So did The Artist. Kim Novak felt raped.

by Anonymousreply 119November 13, 2018 8:42 PM

I’m sure Amazon gave Esmail any music budget he wanted.

by Anonymousreply 120November 14, 2018 3:19 PM

I just finished Season 1. It was pretty good. "Best thriller series ever," no. But, good.

by Anonymousreply 121November 15, 2018 10:54 PM

R121 agree. It's good. Nothing groundbreaking. But Roberts will be nominated for everything. And possibly win as a grand dame.

by Anonymousreply 122November 18, 2018 5:04 AM

absolutely not groundbreaking or the best of anything, but it's beautifully shot

by Anonymousreply 123November 18, 2018 4:19 PM
R21 She can't be happy with how she looks in this. It is the first time she's look old. And the wig makes her look like an old person going through chemo.

I think it’s a character choice...? She’s not supposed to be glamorous.

I mean, she’s one of the producers, and could have looked however she wanted.

by Anonymousreply 124November 19, 2018 5:23 AM
R47 One major character literally disappeares and we get no explanation.

Who was that? I don’t remember being jarred by anyone disappearing.

by Anonymousreply 125November 19, 2018 5:27 AM
R118 really, [R115]? they used the original Herrmann music? Isn't that prohibitive, budget wise?

The music is all from movie soundtracks, mostly from the 70s and 80s. In addition to what’s been mentioned, there’s also KLUTE, CAPRICORN ONE, THE PARALAX VIEW, CARRIE, ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN...many older dramas/thrillers.

From article:
Esmail didn’t want to use these classic scores as a reference point, or temp music: He wanted to use the actual scores.
“I just started thinking, this is going to be really unfair to ask a music composer to ape David Shire’s ‘Conversation’ theme,” said Esmail. “That’s just ridiculous, or to ask someone to ape Michael Smalls’ theme from ‘Klute.’”
Esmail broached the subject with music supervisor Maggie Phillips when she first interviewed for the job. She found the idea discomfiting. “People have licensed a score piece here or there, but there’s no real paper trail for older scores like there is for the other music we license,” said Phillips. “There was no way of estimating costs, at all, and the people we were licensing from wouldn’t even know. The NBC-Universal clearance team and my team, no one had ever done this before.”

I wonder why Sissy Spacek agreed to do this... i know it's a prestige show, but her part was nothing. Marianne Jean-Baptiste at least got some fierce "angry mama bear" scenes.

by Anonymousreply 127November 19, 2018 3:14 PM

^and she got to speak...creole?? what was her language?

by Anonymousreply 128November 19, 2018 3:47 PM

It was very very fractured creole of some sort.

by Anonymousreply 129November 19, 2018 4:55 PM

Every time I see the photo OP posted, I think of Tony Soprano in Dr. Melfi's office.

by Anonymousreply 130November 19, 2018 5:16 PM

What’s with the facial hair/long hairs everyone is referring to? Pic please?

by Anonymousreply 131November 19, 2018 9:07 PM

Thanks so much for posting that, R126! I knew some of the music sounded familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on anything until I watched Episode 9, where I recognized a theme from Body Heat (one of my all time favorite movies).

It's always nice when someone lets you know that, no, you aren't crazy.

by Anonymousreply 132November 20, 2018 1:45 AM

R132 I knew some of the music sounded familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on anything...It’s always nice when someone lets you know that, no, you aren't crazy.

You’re not crazy....[italic]YOU’RE NOT CRAZY ! ![/italic] I will write you a note.

Maybe you can be a character in Season II ? ?

by Anonymousreply 133November 20, 2018 6:16 AM

R125 the agent who spent the whole series trying to find answers. There was an ominous phone call . He was in his office maybe to get his stuff. They cut to something else then cut back to the office and we see a chair spinning like someone left very suddenly. That is the last we see of him and I thought it implied something bad has happened.

by Anonymousreply 134November 20, 2018 2:58 PM

^it implies it did his job, did it well, but the Powers That Be are evil so he'll probably be sacked or worse. Or he knows that already and resigned. The point is: you cant beat those assholes, no need to see/say more.

by Anonymousreply 135November 20, 2018 4:39 PM

I thought maybe the bad wig was a homage to Barbra Stanwyck in Double Indemnity Billy Wilder insisted she wear one.

by Anonymousreply 136November 21, 2018 12:04 AM

I think I liked Roberts' character better when she was DR. MELFI ON THE SOPRANOS!!

by Anonymousreply 137November 21, 2018 12:15 AM

R137 Miss Roberts will see you at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, SAG Awards and the Oscars. Sorry hon.

by Anonymousreply 138November 23, 2018 2:45 AM

Oscars?

by Anonymousreply 139November 23, 2018 3:45 AM
R134 the agent who spent the whole series trying to find answers. There was an ominous phone call . He was in his office maybe to get his stuff. They cut to something else then cut back to the office and we see a chair spinning like someone left very suddenly. That is the last we see of him.

I thought that was the same guy who was following the complaint that was filed all the way to the end....

by Anonymousreply 140November 23, 2018 4:19 AM

It was a typical Esmail misdirection show, with his signature stylized framing, color manipulations, slow pacing, and oversize titlecards ala Mr. Robot. Good but not great.

by Anonymousreply 141November 23, 2018 4:23 AM

R140 me too

by Anonymousreply 142November 23, 2018 4:23 AM

It was the same guy.

by Anonymousreply 143November 23, 2018 5:44 AM

Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who I usually enjoy watching, was terrible in this. Primarily due to her terrible accent, which as stated above, was some kind of Creole hatched job. She went in and out of the accent and it never sounded consistent or realistic. It took me out of the story, because typically I enjoy her acting so much that it was disturbing how bad her accent was.

by Anonymousreply 144November 23, 2018 10:34 AM

why is this big lipped whore spoiling all my magazines with photos of her god dam cologne ads?????

AWAY WITH THEEE DAMN FUKKER

by Anonymousreply 145November 23, 2018 2:10 PM

I thought everyone in the cast was good. Including Marianne.

by Anonymousreply 146November 23, 2018 2:14 PM

R127 Sissy agreed to this because it’s a prestige project and they paid her “Amazon Money” - She’s no dummy

by Anonymousreply 147November 23, 2018 2:59 PM

I think she kinda had a good scene when she lied about a Doctor’s appointment.

by Anonymousreply 148November 23, 2018 3:54 PM
R127 I wonder why Sissy Spacek agreed to do this

What else does Spacek have TO DO? I mean, I love her, but there aren’t a ton of roles for actresses of her generation, and then there’s great competition for what’s available within that group.

Plus, in addition to what a part might allow them to perform, actors often take roles just to remain visible (and therefor considered for other projects.)

by Anonymousreply 149November 23, 2018 4:49 PM

Just finished Homecoming. While it works hard to ramp up the suspense, like so many other shows, the payoff isn’t worth it.

After that last episode I wondered why I had wasted 5 hours on that.

Julia Roberts’ wig is terrible

by Anonymousreply 150November 24, 2018 3:56 PM

What R150 said. While the acting (Stephan James ought to break out from this) and production values were solid, I found it to be tedious and underwhelming.

by Anonymousreply 151November 24, 2018 4:21 PM

Did Miss Roberts sample some of young Mr James?

by Anonymousreply 152November 24, 2018 4:24 PM

How does it compare to the original? Catherine Keener is such an interesting actress, I wish they had kept her for the Netflix version.

I watched one episode and am thinking of listening to the podcast first.

by Anonymousreply 153November 24, 2018 6:10 PM

Sorry. I mean Amazon ^^

by Anonymousreply 154November 24, 2018 6:32 PM

The original is just a podcast.

by Anonymousreply 155November 25, 2018 12:50 AM

R155, everyone knows that.

Is the podcast better? Usually knockoff adaptations are not as good as the original. Just was asking if anyone had an opinion in this case.

by Anonymousreply 156November 25, 2018 5:20 AM

I've watched the first four episodes. It's dull as fuck. Nothing happens. She's so dreary in it.

by Anonymousreply 157November 26, 2018 1:14 AM

Each episode's music is the soundtrack to famous movies--KLUTE, CARRIE...WTF?

by Anonymousreply 158November 26, 2018 1:16 AM

I think it’s brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 159November 26, 2018 1:17 AM

I loved the music. And hon she's supposed to be dreary. In one part of her role she's basically a labotomized zombie looking for answers.

by Anonymousreply 160November 26, 2018 1:19 AM

It's well done but literally goes nowhere. The nding was a huge letdown and totally predictable.

by Anonymousreply 161November 26, 2018 1:21 AM

After 4 episodes, I don't care. So far it's building to nothing. And the title credits to each episode blatantly play other movie soundtracks. What is that about? Not just somewhat similar but note for note identical.

by Anonymousreply 162November 26, 2018 1:21 AM

You either get Sam Esmail or you don’t.

by Anonymousreply 163November 26, 2018 1:22 AM

Yeah, I'm passing on the rest.

by Anonymousreply 164November 26, 2018 1:23 AM

I don't think the ending went nowhere. I think it's a set up for the next season since they were guaranteed 2. I still think the James character was telling her something in that last scene. I don't think it was just a flippant cutesy play on their previous interactions.

by Anonymousreply 165November 26, 2018 1:26 AM

You also know absolutely nothing about the other guys in this homecoming center. This show is full of fucking holes.

by Anonymousreply 166November 26, 2018 1:39 AM

It seemed Julia only had one patient.

by Anonymousreply 167November 26, 2018 1:48 AM

Which makes for a very dull show, r167.

by Anonymousreply 168November 26, 2018 1:50 AM

R166. The people working there are basically absolute robots. If you need to know anything about any of them it would be the other counselor who role played with them during "training". But I don't think it's there yet. You learned plenty about the Cannavale character when he pursued her and his frequent phone calls. Esmail as stated above is obviously leaving you to learn things along with her since she doesn't know them herself. It's not written for network where they over explain ahead of the character so the audience knows something the character doesn't. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it's an obvious storytelling choice. She's almost treated as though she's being treated herself

by Anonymousreply 169November 26, 2018 1:50 AM

The guy that leaves is mentioned as a previous patient.

by Anonymousreply 170November 26, 2018 1:52 AM

Halfway through the first season and zero character development. Cannavale is ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 171November 26, 2018 1:54 AM

It's all talking on the phone, or dreary no-resolution dialogue in scene after scene.

by Anonymousreply 172November 26, 2018 1:56 AM

Cannavale comes into play more in the later episodes.

by Anonymousreply 173November 26, 2018 1:59 AM

I thought Cannavale was great.

by Anonymousreply 174November 26, 2018 2:00 AM

The tracking shot near the opening of the first episode using a facility tour to introduce us to the center while providing exposition and introducing a sense of subterfuge was masterful.

by Anonymousreply 175November 26, 2018 2:04 AM

Hes very good in the late episodes when they actually interact. And he begins almost playing two roles. The one she knows and the one the audience knows. Its the first time the audience gets ahead of her.

,

by Anonymousreply 176November 26, 2018 2:04 AM

I usually hate Julia Roberts but she was good in this. So was Shea Whigham who usually doesn't get the roles or recognition he deserves. Great character actor.

by Anonymousreply 177November 26, 2018 2:05 AM

If that was disgruntled patient you're talking about, he was wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 178November 26, 2018 2:09 AM

Poop. This sounds interesting. I certainly can find Julia Roberts to be annoying but I don't totally hate her nor refuse to watch her in anything. I'd like to see this but I gave up my Amazon Prime a couple of months ago. Don't think there is much chance of Amazon selling and Netflix buying. Maybe I can get Prime again in a few months.

by Anonymousreply 179November 26, 2018 2:33 AM

"Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who I usually enjoy watching, was terrible in this. Primarily due to her terrible accent, which as stated above, was some kind of Creole hatched job. "

And didn't her son not eve have much of an accent at all. Why couldn't she just speak with the generalized American accent of her son. He's from Florida; there's plenty of everyday Af-Ams in Flordia, they're not all of Caribbean descent or "Creole."

by Anonymousreply 180November 26, 2018 2:47 AM

It really benefited from only being 5 hours total. If they had tried to extend the episodes to 42 to 60 min, it would have been much tougher to digest.

by Anonymousreply 181November 26, 2018 2:49 AM

The upset patient was Lip from Shameless.

by Anonymousreply 182November 26, 2018 2:51 AM

R182 he was very good

by Anonymousreply 183November 26, 2018 2:54 AM
R175 The tracking shot near the opening of the first episode using a facility tour to introduce us to the center while providing exposition and introducing a sense of subterfuge was masterful.

Using the opening music from DRESSED TO KILL there injected tension, as well. A lot of viewers know that musical sequence ends with an attack, so it was unnerving...like, “I know something’s going to jump out at me!”

by Anonymousreply 184November 26, 2018 3:21 AM

I liked how when the episodes ended and the credits started to roll the action would continue behind them. The episode with the investigator in the file room with the light switching on and off is a very Hitchcockian shot.

by Anonymousreply 185November 26, 2018 3:25 AM

and what about female soldiers? did they have all female facilities too?

by Anonymousreply 186November 26, 2018 10:49 AM

I'm seriously starting to think that George W Bush left a lot of kids behind. Namely, those complaining that the show is "dull as fuck", "going nowhere", etc. In any case, why are you watching this? I'm sure Greg Berlanti has churned out something for you to watch on CW.

by Anonymousreply 187November 26, 2018 11:25 AM

Can someone explain that last scene to me with the evil Asian woman taking the test tube with the blood in it and rubbing it on her wrists? What the hell was that?

by Anonymousreply 188November 26, 2018 11:49 AM

it means that the drug tested on soldiers is reaching the larger population, and soon everybody will be using it to forget things, with tragic consequences on everybody's life.

by Anonymousreply 189November 26, 2018 5:11 PM

At the end, had he forgotten her or was just pretending (he moved her fork the way he used to move her pen around)? Shea Wigham was the DoD clerk. He usually plays bad guys.

by Anonymousreply 190November 26, 2018 5:14 PM

R189 I didn't get how rubbing it on her wrists would have had any effect, though. Why didn't she just take a pill?

by Anonymousreply 191November 27, 2018 1:35 PM

The use of scores from other movies really took me out of this. Instead of paying attention, I was figuring out where I heard the score before. It was funny seeing Julia Roberts with the scores to "The Fog", "Escape From New York", and "Halloween 3" playing in the background.

by Anonymousreply 192November 27, 2018 1:43 PM

u couldn't pay me enuf to watch this old hag....

by Anonymousreply 193November 27, 2018 1:49 PM

WOW I had listened to the podcast drama this was based off and had no idea this was an adaptation of that. I'm excited to watch now

by Anonymousreply 194November 27, 2018 2:03 PM

I try to avoid anything ms Roberts is in.

I find her creepy as fuk.

by Anonymousreply 195November 27, 2018 2:26 PM

It's nice that J has found a medium which better suits her (smaller) talents. God knows, no one needs to see J's smile on an IMAX screen.

by Anonymousreply 196November 27, 2018 2:29 PM

R191: i think that meant that the technology behind the drugs was evolving so that the product was becoming even more "friendly", without the implications of taking a pill. The memory and emotions killing product was on its way to become like over the counter stuff, easy to use and available everywhere. At least that was my take on the last scene.

by Anonymousreply 197November 27, 2018 2:43 PM

I really liked the series and James is awesome and hot as hell! I really have a problem with Julia Roberts in general just due to her overexposure and hype. For someone who the public considers a great beauty she has become hard to look at and almost weird looking. The wig did not help. I think she is way too thin too. But, she is damn good in this.

PS - the scene where she is eating gnocchi with James, as it is wrapping up, has a haunting melody. It sort of sounds like Air, but it is actually Vangelis's Reve. Beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 198November 30, 2018 11:48 AM

R191? Have you been living in a cave?

There are plenty of medications made to be absorbed through the skin, the Nicorette patch, for one. My sister wears an estrogen patch since her hysterectomy. I knew a woman who, many years ago, was prescribed a Fentanyl patch. And the new male contraceptive is made to rub on the skin.

Get it now?

by Anonymousreply 199November 30, 2018 11:57 AM

My parents are from Haiti (I was born there but raised in NYC). Marianne’s was terrible, although the vocabulary was correct.

Why bother making her character Haitian if she couldn’t handle it? Did they think no one would notice? Maybe we find out she was faking in season 2.

I enjoyed the show despite that one misstep.

by Anonymousreply 200November 30, 2018 3:12 PM

maybe in the podcast the character was from haiti and they kept that, even if it was totally useless

by Anonymousreply 201November 30, 2018 4:45 PM

There were no Haitian characters in the podcast. Who was Haitian on the show?

by Anonymousreply 202November 30, 2018 4:49 PM

the soldier's mother, played by Marianne Jean-Baptiste

by Anonymousreply 203November 30, 2018 4:51 PM

In the podcast, the solider and his mother were both Mexican. So no idea why they chose Haitian instead

by Anonymousreply 204November 30, 2018 4:53 PM

Julia was on Ellen yesterday and so much fun and funny. Love her.

Dermot and Miss Thing have been fucking since the 90s. Everyone knows. They claim to be "best friends" but is code for fuck buddies. Miss Cat Keener is no fan of Lady Roberts.

by Anonymousreply 206December 2, 2018 4:03 AM

Were Keemer and Mulroney a thing?

by Anonymousreply 207December 2, 2018 4:06 AM

R207 they were married supposedly

by Anonymousreply 208December 2, 2018 4:09 AM

R207 wow. And she was fucking him? Well can’t say I blame her. Look at him.

by Anonymousreply 209December 2, 2018 4:12 AM

Julia took him like she does. Ask Isabelle Adjani. No fan of our Julia.

by Anonymousreply 210December 2, 2018 4:14 AM

a whole thread about Homecoming and we only mentioned Dermot once in a gossipy way. he really made no impression at all in the series.

by Anonymousreply 211December 2, 2018 10:16 AM

He was in 3 episodes. I just checked. I watched it about 6 weeks ago. I don't remember his character, "Anthony"

by Anonymousreply 212December 2, 2018 10:25 AM

the character was quite useless (just like Sissy Spacek's). He said yes because he's Julia's buddy i guess.

by Anonymousreply 213December 2, 2018 10:30 AM

Dermot Mulroney is in Homecoming? Yikes, I watched the series a couple weeks ago and don't remember him at all. What character did he play?

by Anonymousreply 214December 2, 2018 11:08 AM

Her suffering boyfriend ^^

by Anonymousreply 215December 2, 2018 2:37 PM

That's because the characters are utterly unmemorable and there is the barest semblance of a plot. Add to that tedious, elliptical dialogue and you have show no one will remember or watch again.

by Anonymousreply 216December 2, 2018 3:04 PM

weeks after watching i agree with R126. Very well done on the surface, a big nothing inside. At least the male protagonist was beautiful and talented.

by Anonymousreply 217December 2, 2018 3:21 PM

I found Mr. Robot to be an utter bore but Homecoming is gripping and with wonderful characters. The ending was deeply moving.

by Anonymousreply 218December 2, 2018 3:24 PM

I enjoyed the experience of watching the show but when it was all over I agree with R126. A big nothing inside. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind did the same theme so much better.

by Anonymousreply 219December 2, 2018 3:35 PM

Because it is dull as fuck, r187. It's one half-hour episode after the other, during which maybe one thing will happen. And there's no momentum from episode to episode. But do congratulate yourself for thinking you're watching something deep and probing.

by Anonymousreply 220December 2, 2018 3:55 PM

I watched the first half during a plane ride two weeks ago, and I found those episodes maddeningly boring. Had I not been captive, I would have found something else to do. I finished the series this morning at home. The second half is much more interesting plotwise. I thought the performances were strong. The series feels more like a character sketch than a fully realized story, with the author/director more concerned with structural experimentation than anything. It’s like a lot of what I have seen on Netflix in that way—experimental and dark to the point of being bleak, and not quite finished or else focusing more on mood than on story. It’s very much like the sorts of things many of us workshopped in my fiction writing MFA program.

I didn’t mind it, but the series relies on compelling performances as a kind of smoke-and-mirrors cover for lackluster writing.

by Anonymousreply 221December 30, 2018 5:12 PM

seeing her acting in the trailers (commercials) is nauseating. i'll avoid this one at all costs because of it.

by Anonymousreply 222December 30, 2018 5:16 PM

I have always liked her. She’s a charismatic movie star if nothing else, but I think she is also a good actor. The term “pretty woman” certainly doesn’t pertain to the 51 year-old version of her face—“pretty” to me means soft and pleasant and she is sharp-angled and pretty unusual looking with a bunch of bold features stuck onto one big head—but so what? She is past middle age and she can now be an interesting character actor instead of an innocuous romantic lead. Her face does have a masculine quality now and she should be able to use that to her advantage if producers are willing to cast her in good roles. As I said in R221, I don’t see this series as a fully realized story but it serves as a great extended audition reel for an older actress who is ready to play more serious and nuanced roles.

by Anonymousreply 223December 30, 2018 5:24 PM

"Homecoming" is much better than that piece of shit movie "Bird Box" on Nextflix with Sandy Bullock that for some reason everyone is raving about.

by Anonymousreply 224December 30, 2018 5:49 PM

Pity nobody is still talking about this. little project.

by Anonymousreply 225December 30, 2018 5:52 PM

It's funny how both movie sweethearts of the 90's are on television and their potential love interest is a younger fine-looking black man. Sandy playing opposite Trevante Rhodes who is very good in the film.

by Anonymousreply 226December 30, 2018 8:20 PM

Sandra Bullock is still a major movie star. She had Oceans 8 earlier this year.

by Anonymousreply 227December 30, 2018 9:30 PM

yes, I know. I didn't say Sandy was an ex-movie star. Duh. Sandy and Julia were both female leads in romantic comedy, starting in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 228December 31, 2018 4:45 AM

It works better as a podcast. I haven't watched the show but I remember being surprised they wanted to adapt it. Most of the first season is just Robert's character talking to the marine in a therapy session. The second season is more exciting at least

by Anonymousreply 229December 31, 2018 1:50 PM

I always thought Julia had a tiny head? And she was a star starting in the late 80's who blew up in the 90's.

by Anonymousreply 230December 31, 2018 2:00 PM

Huh. I didn’t notice most of this stuff.

Julia lacks the chameleon quality to become a character actress. She is always JULIA

I finally watched it, and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Am I the only one who noticed how much Julia Roberts looks like Nancy Fish in this series?

by Anonymousreply 233March 20, 2019 1:11 AM

I liked everything except her wig, which was completely unnecessary.

by Anonymousreply 234March 20, 2019 1:22 AM

That was the night that I died, and someone else was saved. Someone who was afraid of water, but learned to swim. Someone who knew there would be one moment, where he wouldn't be watching. Someone who knew that the darkness of the broken lights would show the way.

by Anonymousreply 235March 20, 2019 2:13 AM

Doesn’t seem to be winning any awards. Patricia Arquette might be competing with herself for The Emmy if her version of Mommmy Dearest and Dead is any good.

by Anonymousreply 236March 20, 2019 2:19 PM

Homecoming is a big ball of nothing. Dull dull dull. I was waitINg for something, anything to happen. And then it ended.

by Anonymousreply 237March 21, 2019 4:51 AM

R237 is right. It's weird. I liked it a lot. I liked the acting, the style, the pace it moved at, the half hour format, it was a good story, and I liked the ending. But it's true. It was a big ball of nothing. I expected some big conspiracy or unfolding but it never happened. I thought once they sneaked out of the facility and went on that drive I was thinking oh ok somethings going to get going here. Still nothing. The strangest part though is that I liked it.

by Anonymousreply 238March 21, 2019 10:10 AM

one of those series who should have paid their editors/DOP millions, and just peanuts for the writers. It's beautiful and stylish, covering the big nothing underneath. Alas, this happens a lot with so called "prestige television": it's shit in a very nice box. All of it.

by Anonymousreply 239March 21, 2019 6:09 PM

OK here's a point I wanted to ask others. Mostly concerning Sissy. I kept wondering why she took a BIG NOTHING part until I started to think that she was in on it and will be the biggest part in season two. When Julia was having flashbacks of coming home and needing to be helped out of her car, Sissy turns to someone off camera and hisses "look what you've done". It was only a split second, you had to really be watching to catch it, but I was like WTF. I knew it. Plus the mother just seemed so sinister and unhelpful in helping her to get her memory back.

Loved, loved, loved it. One of the best series on now, along with The Handmaid’s Tale and The Crown.

I'm just anticipating Lost in Space Season 2.

[bold]Janelle Monáe to Succeed Julia Roberts in Season 2[/bold]

r242 Close but no cigar.
Monáe plays a tenacious woman who finds herself floating in a canoe, with no memory of how she got there — or even who she is.
As previously reported, Roberts, who never intended to star beyond the show’s first season, will remain on board as an executive producer alongside showrunner Sam Esmail. The second season is expected to deviate wildly from the podcast on which it is based.

by Anonymousreply 243July 23, 2019 7:39 PM

Wow. What a come-down.

When the show was originally announced, it was stated Julia was going to star in both seasons (the only reason they ordered two seasons right off the bat in the first place let's be honest). I guess she didn't realize how much work TV would be (or didn't like the people involved) and quit so, ever since they announced she was leaving, they've been claiming she was only ever meant to be in the first season. There aren't enough Sure, Jan gifs in the world for that.
