You’re familiar with the “Know Nothings” of the 1850’s? That’s what the Deplorables are. The same paranoid, xenophobic and racist motivated group. It’s not that they believe what he said; they already were predisposed to believe because - they’re “true believers”. Anything that contradicts their belief is a conspiracy against them.

The see themselves as the victims, which is an essential aspects of all conspiracy theories. It’s also confidence games work but that’s tangential.
