WTF?! How could people accept this overacting back then?!!
I thought he was great!

BECAUSE everyone else under emoted in the preceding 50 years. It was a shock to see 'real' emotional pain on film, especially from a male.

He was cute so, just like today, good looking people are given every chance

He was good, but yes, he overacted in this scene. Meanwhile It’s one of his most iconic.

Stick a fork in him he's done!

THANK you, OP. I cringed with embarrassment when I finally watched "Rebel Without a Cause." He was pretty good in that movie otherwise, but if you want to see him really stink up the screen, try "East of Eden."

R7 I felt he was great in East or Eden

Dennis Hopper said Dean's acting/persona was part Monty Clift saying "forgive me", part Marlon Brando saying "fuck you" and somewhere in between was Jimmy Dean.

I thought he was very believable in this scene. No doubt he got the emotion from himself. James Dean was a very tormented soul.

R9 Dennis Hopper would always speak of Dean like they were best friends when in reality Dean couldn’t stand him. Dean hardly liked anyone and could be very cold.
I remember Sal Mineo saying in an interview how Dean would be your best friend one day then the next would walk right by you like you don’t exist and make you feel like shit. Mineo was only 16 and this would always make him feel bad and have him thinking he did something wrong to Dean.

Dean was SO fucked up. Which is why he stuck a nerve whenever he was onscreen. He was so intense and yet so vulnerable. That was a unique combination back then. I've seen all three of his movies. He really was one of those movie stars that you can't take your eyes off of whenever he's in a scene.

I saw this on the big screen lately and it was incredible, an almost perfect film. They started filming it in B+W but when they saw the magic they had they switched to color.
None of the actors were "stars"; the biggest one was probably Wood, who had been a child actor then got stuck in anonymous adolescent roles in forgettable films. This film made her (and Dean, posthumously) a star.

Have you ever dealt with teenagers…. they over act.

But rarely are they lauded for that.
