Why did Joanne Woodward's career go straight down the shitter?

Look at Judi Dench, look at Maggie Smith, look at Helen Mirren. They have so many TV and movie projects on the go

While their American contemporary Joanne Woodward, hasn't had an acting role since 2005, and that project (Empire Falls) was her husband's project. Her last starring role was in 1994, Breathing Lessons, was TWENTY-FOUR YEARS ago!

So why did her acting career go straight down the shitter?

Helen Mirren is not a contemporary of Joanne Woodward. She’s 15 years younger.

by Anonymousreply 1October 20, 2018 12:04 AM

At this point, I can't help it. OP got me cracking up, finally.

by Anonymousreply 2October 20, 2018 12:06 AM

OP needs to be sent RIGHT DOWN THE SHITTER!

by Anonymousreply 3October 20, 2018 12:06 AM

She has had health issues

by Anonymousreply 4October 20, 2018 12:06 AM

She was too busy getting a piece of Paul Newman's ass to worry about a career. Lucky gal.

by Anonymousreply 5October 20, 2018 12:11 AM

I forgot she was still alive. Maybe she's just not interested in acting much anymore. She's an old lady and allowed to retire.

by Anonymousreply 6October 20, 2018 12:11 AM

R3 you do know we all have the ability to use the "mute" button.

by Anonymousreply 7October 20, 2018 12:11 AM

All the ones you named were Brits. Joanne got old - and never was all that much of a looker. This is America you know. (Meryl is the exception that proves the rule - and Cher I guess)

by Anonymousreply 8October 20, 2018 12:12 AM

[quote] She's an old lady and allowed to retire.

Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and even Glenda Jackson are still out there pushing it.

Why not Joanne?

by Anonymousreply 9October 20, 2018 12:13 AM

Europeans don't have a youth fetish.

by Anonymousreply 10October 20, 2018 12:14 AM

OP, you're a fucking idiot. Tell us about your decades-long career.

by Anonymousreply 11October 20, 2018 12:14 AM

[quote] Europeans don't have a youth fetish.

Many of the projects these Brits are working on are AMERICAN productions.

Maybe the producers see having a Brit in the cast adds a touch of class

by Anonymousreply 12October 20, 2018 12:15 AM

[quote] Tell us about your decades-long career.

Joanne's ended hers in 1994, and she still kicking around

by Anonymousreply 13October 20, 2018 12:16 AM

And I forgot about the BBC. Maybe I should say the Brits don't have as much of a youth fetish (when it comes to women - I think old men producers are happy to have old men stars into their dotage)

by Anonymousreply 14October 20, 2018 12:17 AM

Don't be impudent, OP, Joanne simply enjoys Connecticut.

by Anonymousreply 15October 20, 2018 12:18 AM

i always got the impression she only works when the project is worthwhile. she got the oscar early...why do a bunch of crap?

by Anonymousreply 16October 20, 2018 12:21 AM

I think she was just done. I never found her compelling or charismatic. Maybe she was pretty....idk. Maybe she just decided to sit on her money and tell the world to fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 17October 20, 2018 12:22 AM

She's content to spend her remaining years doing decoupage and Jazzercise.

by Anonymousreply 18October 20, 2018 12:22 AM

well for one thing she is in her late 80 s and has eitehr dementia or alzh/

by Anonymousreply 19October 20, 2018 12:23 AM

She did serious, good stuff like 3 Faces of Eve. American films went to pot after Jaws - maybe after Psycho. It became all about overwhelming people and manipulating emotions, not telling a decent story. Our Joanne was an intellectual - friend of Tennessee Williams and all that. I think she did some plays ? Small productions. She could afford it. Paul made the $$$ (and the salad dressing.)

by Anonymousreply 20October 20, 2018 12:25 AM

[quote] well for one thing she is in her late 80 s and has eitehr dementia or alzh/

But she didn't stand in front of a movie camera from 1994 to 2004

by Anonymousreply 21October 20, 2018 12:26 AM

Oh and Lee Strasberg - I think she was in that hoyty toyty NY crowd. And good for her!

by Anonymousreply 22October 20, 2018 12:28 AM

Rachel Rachel

by Anonymousreply 23October 20, 2018 12:31 AM

To go straight down the shitter, OP, as you so eloquently put it, one has to have a series of bombs. Ms. Woodward did not. Sadly, she developed health issues. I believe she is lost to Alzheimer's now.

by Anonymousreply 24October 20, 2018 12:44 AM

What r19 said...poor lady is not in her right mind. As far as her not being a looker? Please! She was quite pretty in her day...she was a beauty pageant contestant. And she preferred to focus on her craft rather than obsessing over her looks.

Good actress, bad Movie Star. Like Jill Clayburgh.

by Anonymousreply 37October 20, 2018 1:09 AM

Poor Joanne looks awful these days.

by Anonymousreply 38October 20, 2018 1:09 AM

Reportedley she has Alzheimer’s. Even after her film career faded with her last Oscar nomination in 1991, she continued working in TV and scored three more Emmy nominations in the 90s and 00s. I think she really lost interest after Newman died. She accomplished a lot as an actress and around 90 so I think she earned her retirement.

by Anonymousreply 39October 20, 2018 1:13 AM

[quote] knows perfectly well what the reason is

That she was screwing Mrs. Newman's husband when she was single?

by Anonymousreply 40October 20, 2018 1:14 AM

I think R5 summed it up. I would just stare at my husband all day.

by Anonymousreply 41October 20, 2018 1:16 AM

[quote] I would just stare at my husband all day.

Was Joanne busy staring at the cum dripping from Paul's ass?

by Anonymousreply 42October 20, 2018 1:18 AM

She was the Artistic Director of the Westport Playhouse from 2000 to 2005 and again in 2008.

by Anonymousreply 43October 20, 2018 1:22 AM

R43 Olympia Dukakis was Artistic Director of the Whole Theater in NJ and still found time to do movies.

by Anonymousreply 44October 20, 2018 1:28 AM

She's too classy and doesn't need the work. Could you imagine Joanne bragging on talk shows about getting a Harvey Weinstein tattoo on her ass (a la Judi Dench) or making tons of shit firms (Helen Mirren)?

by Anonymousreply 45October 20, 2018 1:31 AM

Maybe Olympia wanted to do movies - or needed the money. Maybe Joanne didn't. I've heard it's a lot of boring sitting around, waiting, in a stupid trailer, for your 2 minute scene, to be shot over and over and over... It sounds all exciting and glamorous but I think the reality is not so fabulous. Why bother if you're not driven by narcissism, ambition or need for money? Especially when you can do (act in or direct) plays whenever you want to actually enjoy your craft?

by Anonymousreply 46October 20, 2018 1:32 AM

Hey OP, can we do Doris Day next?

by Anonymousreply 47October 20, 2018 1:34 AM

Alzheimer's? Pish Posh! Why my Ronnie ruled the free world and his brain was complete mush! Co-incidentally, his diet was also complete mush. You could drink it through a straw.

Add a little bitters, some gin, and that mush was healthy and fortifying. I thought I would never be able to kneel again. But one mushtini for luncn, and another two or three at cocktail time, and I could kneel all night long.

by Anonymousreply 48October 20, 2018 1:40 AM

How about Livvy?

by Anonymousreply 49October 20, 2018 1:41 AM

Where’s Lee Grant

The old Brits get more work in America than they do in England. I think it is that Americans think Brits add class and the accent gives the illusion that they’re better actors. As a Brit it makes me laugh because I’ve never lived amongst people who sound anything like Brit actors. We’re more Dame Lily Savage than Dame Maggie Smith around here.

by Anonymousreply 50October 20, 2018 1:43 AM

Obviously you have not resided in the more desirable neighborhoods.

by Anonymousreply 51October 20, 2018 1:58 AM

Her time was up.

by Anonymousreply 52October 20, 2018 4:26 AM

Wasn't she a homewrecker?

by Anonymousreply 53October 20, 2018 4:55 AM

It was a home wracked and ready to be wrecked, I reckon.

by Anonymousreply 54October 20, 2018 5:01 AM

She wasn't pretty; she had that Esther Blodgett blodge on the end of her nose.

Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Glenda Jackson are "still out there pushing it" because geriatric health care is so expensive in Britain..

by Anonymousreply 55October 20, 2018 5:07 AM

Bland best describes her looks and talent. Zero charisma, serious gym teacher vibes. Nothing special as an actress. The Three Faces of Eve is unwatchable - she plays the world's most boring nymphomaniac. Did she ever make another movie? She's rich and has some offspring. Who knew she was alive? Shit goes in the shitter.

by Anonymousreply 56October 20, 2018 5:17 AM

and that's what you get when you turn on the TV in England - people who look and sound like you.

No wonder the actors who have an ounce of class flee to America where they are appreciated (and paid well) and don't have to speak with Northern accents in every single thing they do...unless it's set in the long ago past of course.

by Anonymousreply 57October 20, 2018 5:20 AM

R55, SOME of us find that an obliging blodge.

by Anonymousreply 58October 20, 2018 5:22 AM

She's 88 and has more money than god. Who the hell would do something as shallow and unfulfilling as acting with that kind of money?

by Anonymousreply 59October 20, 2018 5:24 AM

Acting is so shallow and unfulfilling that a 4 year old could do it.

by Anonymousreply 60October 20, 2018 8:05 AM

Her career did not.

OP is the only thing here that needs to "go straight down the shitter."

OP = a bipolar, O.C.D. troll who gets its jollies by stirring shit where there is none.

F/F it, ban it, red-tag it please, folks.

True story, once I walked in on Joanne Woodward in a bathroom and she was a choking a golden marmoset that she carried around in her purse.

That's a movie star thing, right? Purse marmosets? Plus there was that bottle of Newman's Own Parmesan and Roasted Garlic Dressing that the marmoset was drinking out of. I mean, who does that? I mean, their brains are small but still. No wonder she was choking the marmoset.

Wait, that doesn't sound right. Isn't that some kind of euphemism for masturbation? Like spanking the chicken or choking the hog or whatever? Who comes up with these things?

You know what? Now that I think of it, it might have been Kim Novak. I always get those two confused. Although why Novak would carry around a bottle of Newman's dressing is beyond me. I mean, it's okay, but it's not that great. Obviously the marmoset would disagree if she hadn't killed it.

by Anonymousreply 62October 20, 2018 9:47 AM

She has Alzheimer's.. I read somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 63October 20, 2018 10:09 AM

Paul Newman had rumors he was another trisexual movie star mess, I guess Joanne Woodward wasn't really made for today's and yesterday's transparency, I mean e.g. with then always coming questions about Paul Newman, also when he was still alive; don't know any unpleasant rumors about her, but she might have had stuff to hide as well, I think she comes from the same region as Kim Basinger, cuckoo for cocoa puffs.

"Joanne Woodward is setting back glamour in Hollywood by making her own clothes." - our Joan

by Anonymousreply 70October 20, 2018 8:36 PM

I have a feeling she was prettier and more vivacious / intriguing in real life than what translated to the screen. Her voice bored me, so monotone. I could never get into her acting, but she seems well liked by everyone who knew her. A good egg. I am sorry that she is in mental decline.

by Anonymousreply 71October 20, 2018 8:46 PM

She was very small and low key in her acting. But she rode that wave of method or Meisner or whatever actors during that era.......

Joan Crawford got all bent out of shape that year, and griped to the press, "Joanne Woodward is setting the cause of Hollywood glamour back twenty years by making her own clothes.”

The next time she went, Woodward bought an expensive dress and told reporters outside, "I hope this makes Joan Crawford happy."

I don't think she has Alzheimer's...I think she was wealthy and just wanted to retire.

The National Enquirer said she has Alzheimer's Disease so it must be true.

by Anonymousreply 82November 28, 2018 5:37 AM

About 30 years ago she was in a TV movie called "Do You Remember Love?" It was about a middle-aged professor (JW) who is starting to have symptoms of Alzheimer's. I believe she said then that her mother had the disease. She was great, as usual.
