Why did Joanne Woodward's career go straight down the shitter?
Look at Judi Dench, look at Maggie Smith, look at Helen Mirren. They have so many TV and movie projects on the go
While their American contemporary Joanne Woodward, hasn't had an acting role since 2005, and that project (Empire Falls) was her husband's project. Her last starring role was in 1994, Breathing Lessons, was TWENTY-FOUR YEARS ago!
So why did her acting career go straight down the shitter?

Helen Mirren is not a contemporary of Joanne Woodward. She’s 15 years younger.

She did serious, good stuff like 3 Faces of Eve. American films went to pot after Jaws - maybe after Psycho. It became all about overwhelming people and manipulating emotions, not telling a decent story. Our Joanne was an intellectual - friend of Tennessee Williams and all that. I think she did some plays ? Small productions. She could afford it. Paul made the $$$ (and the salad dressing.)

Reportedley she has Alzheimer’s. Even after her film career faded with her last Oscar nomination in 1991, she continued working in TV and scored three more Emmy nominations in the 90s and 00s. I think she really lost interest after Newman died. She accomplished a lot as an actress and around 90 so I think she earned her retirement.

Maybe Olympia wanted to do movies - or needed the money. Maybe Joanne didn't. I've heard it's a lot of boring sitting around, waiting, in a stupid trailer, for your 2 minute scene, to be shot over and over and over... It sounds all exciting and glamorous but I think the reality is not so fabulous. Why bother if you're not driven by narcissism, ambition or need for money? Especially when you can do (act in or direct) plays whenever you want to actually enjoy your craft?

Add a little bitters, some gin, and that mush was healthy and fortifying. I thought I would never be able to kneel again. But one mushtini for luncn, and another two or three at cocktail time, and I could kneel all night long.

The old Brits get more work in America than they do in England. I think it is that Americans think Brits add class and the accent gives the illusion that they’re better actors. As a Brit it makes me laugh because I’ve never lived amongst people who sound anything like Brit actors. We’re more Dame Lily Savage than Dame Maggie Smith around here.

Bland best describes her looks and talent. Zero charisma, serious gym teacher vibes. Nothing special as an actress. Shit goes in the shitter.

and that's what you get when you turn on the TV in England - people who look and sound like you.
No wonder the actors who have an ounce of class flee to America where they are appreciated (and paid well) and don't have to speak with Northern accents in every single thing they do...unless it's set in the long ago past of course.

True story, once I walked in on Joanne Woodward in a bathroom and she was a choking a golden marmoset that she carried around in her purse.
That's a movie star thing, right? Purse marmosets? Plus there was that bottle of Newman's Own Parmesan and Roasted Garlic Dressing that the marmoset was drinking out of. I mean, who does that? I mean, their brains are small but still. No wonder she was choking the marmoset.
Wait, that doesn't sound right. Isn't that some kind of euphemism for masturbation? Like spanking the chicken or choking the hog or whatever? Who comes up with these things?
You know what? Now that I think of it, it might have been Kim Novak. I always get those two confused. Although why Novak would carry around a bottle of Newman's dressing is beyond me. I mean, it's okay, but it's not that great. Obviously the marmoset would disagree if she hadn't killed it.

Paul Newman had rumors he was another trisexual movie star mess, I guess Joanne Woodward wasn't really made for today's and yesterday's transparency, I mean e.g. with then always coming questions about Paul Newman, also when he was still alive; don't know any unpleasant rumors about her, but she might have had stuff to hide as well, I think she comes from the same region as Kim Basinger, cuckoo for cocoa puffs.
