"I have no rapport with the new idols of the screen, and that includes Marlon Brando and his style of Method acting. It certainly includes Montgomery Clift and that God-awful James Dean. Some producer should cast all three of them in the same movie and let them duke it out. When they've finished each other off, James Stewart, Spencer Tracy and I will return and start making real movies again like we used to."
Cary Grant Bashing Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and James Dean

Typical grouchy geezer.

Well, styles change and the old guard rarely makes a discreet exit. All six actors had great talent.

Yum! i would have watched that movie!

I love Cary Grant, love him, but a young Marlon Brando was the handsomest man I've ever seen.
That is all.

"Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and James Dean"
I Grant you no mercy.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 17, 2018 2:02 AM |
I agree James Dean is awful. Not the other two though.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 17, 2018 2:03 AM |
Grant was a ham. Was best in stylized non realistic roles. Comedy could be excruciating. Arsenic and Old Lace anyone?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 17, 2018 2:04 AM |
Fuck off, R7, you know nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 17, 2018 2:05 AM |
R4 I completely agree.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 17, 2018 2:07 AM |

Gary Grant was just mad he was too old to get a banana in the tailpipe by any of the three..
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 17, 2018 2:09 AM |
A queen bashing three other queens.

I love Carey Grant. Holiday is my favorite movie.
I love Montgomery Clift. Suddenly Last Summer and A Place in the Sun are two of my favorite movies.
I don’t have to choose.

by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 17, 2018 3:34 AM |
I like Cary.....but that quote does make him look grouchy and out-of-touch

Now there's a man who aged well. He died at 82, still looking good.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 17, 2018 3:47 AM |
Phil Donahue?

I remember looking this up the last time it was posted and the only source I found was Darwin Porter claiming it was said in an interview, but he didn't say when or where.
Anyone have a more legit source for this?
Grant wasn't the type to say that he'd come back with all his old pals and take over Hollywood. He was the kind of actor who balked at being cast against women who were unreasonably young for him.

Let’s be honest: Grant was right about James Dean. Clift and Brando proved themselves multiple times, but “Rebel Without a Cause” features acting that would be laughed out of a CW show, he never really pulled off “Giant,” and his best performance, “East of Eden,” still pales in comparison to his peers (and still suffers from the histrionics that Kazan so often encouraged).

Marlon did not age well but as a young man he was so beautiful and smoking smoking smoking hot.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 17, 2018 3:58 AM |
I never felt James Dean was bad.
Not great but not bad. He was wonderful in East Of Eden.

Cary Grant was the cheapest of cheapskates. Those people have lousy personalities, in general.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 10, 2018 1:30 AM |
that is an aging superstar that is slipping in his standing in hollywood taking out his frustrations on the next generation. It happens constantly to this day.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 10, 2018 3:22 AM |
At least Cary didn't have to deal with the little uglies taking over.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 10, 2018 11:59 PM |
Oh, it's from Darwin Porter? Then it's pure fantasy.
