Canadian becomes first transgender woman to win a female world title on the track

Rachel McKinnon representing Canada won the world title in the master 35-39 women’s sprint at the 2018 UCI Masters Track Cycling World Championships in Los Angeles on Sunday. McKinnon was born a biological male and now identifies as a transgender female. McKinnon celebrated the victory on Twitter writing, “First transgender woman world champion…ever.”

McKinnon is a professor and PhD in philosophy focusing on gender studies at College of Charleston in South Carolina. McKinnon beat Carolien Van Herrikhuyzen of the Netherlands and American Jennifer Wagner to win the gold medal.

In international competitions, it has been controversial allowing biological males who identify as transgender women to compete in women’s events. The International Olympic Committee rules that naturally occurring testosterone in transgender women given them an unfair advantage against women who were born female. In a piece in USA Today in January, McKinnon argued that suppressing testosterone in biological males who identify as trans women is a violation of their human rights.

In September, USA Swimming (org that governs) decided that it would allow athletes to compete according to self-identified gender.

On the opposite end, I remember the transman from Harvard who competed with men in swimming and consistently finished last and far behind the other men competing.

One of the worst parts about the USA Swimming decision to let men who claim to be women compete against actual women is that they did it on behalf of the Alphabet Soup, so gay men and women will be blamed by all the parents whose daughters are now going to be losers.

Females are disqualified from competing if they have injected testosterone but it is okay for men full of testosterone to compete in women's sports? Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

That's just insane. We have separate sports events for separate SEXES, not genders - gender identity shouldn't have anything to do with it. We accept that men, generally, are bigger, faster, stronger and segregate sports accordingly. Yet, we still acknowledge that it's an incredible achievement to be the best woman in a particular sport. You start throwing men onto the women's side and it really is all lost for women. No one wants to see that.

And R19 there's a journalist in the UK writing for the Spectator who claims that part of the silence around the Trans push for self-identification via changing the Gender Recognition Act is because members of parliament are scared of the Trans lobby. He made it sound like physically scared.

The Trans lobby has threatened and used violence against women, but it's just crazy that even government representatives are frightened of them.

I don't get it, I really don't. My brother was a competitive athlete in his youth and is still very athletic and involved in sports. There's no way he would consider winning against a woman a fair victory - and that's not because he doesn't respect female athletes, quite the opposite in fact. Knowing him and his friends (who are also athletic and former competitors) they wouldn't feel right by stealing a victory from women or by taking a spot on one of their teams.

I guess these individuals have no self respect - it's like picking a fight with a little kid and then bragging about winning. I mean no disrespect towards female athletes, those gals could kick my ass in a heartbeat! They're strong, talented, and dedicated but, all other things being equal, they're not as strong as men (most of the time), and to force them to compete against men especially in certain sports is simply unfair.

The gender identity cases are BS. The true intersex cases like Semenya are the most interesting and unfortunate. But, I don't think regulations and participation should be based on such outlier cases - I don't see there being a huge amount of elite intersex athletes. What to do with Semenya - well, it's already been done. She's certainly NOT male, but is not as female as most of her competitors. They did the chromosome and hormone testing and declared her "female enough." But, I feel no one wins - her competitors are up against someone with inherent advantages, and Semenya only gets grief, threats, and hatred for something she can't control. Honestly too bad there's not a big enough population of intersex athletes do they can have their own event.

Gender identity & intersexed biology are two different things & have nothing to do with each other.

Well I'm a lesbian who is sick of the trans stuff. However, I grew up believing that women should be able to play professional sports and compete with men. I still believe that. I get that there is a biological difference but still think girls can and do play with men.

Until it gets sorted out MTF winners competing against ciswomen should have an asterisk next to their names. If they get to decide what gender they are then the general public should be able to decide whether or not they actually won. I agree that integrating trans women in traditional women's sports is unfair to biological females. But misogyny is the wrong diagnosis here.

The fury with which trans women are pursuing female sports, is due to the fact that they desperately wish to be seen as women. The Michfest, female prisons, women's competitions - every place where womanhood is centered or celebrated will be seen by trans women as a place to strive for, almost as an earthly paradise, regardless of the place's actual social and cultural glow, or lack thereof, because nothing is as important to trans activists as being seen as a member of the sisterhood and nothing ruins their day faster than when someone takes them for a man and includes them among men.

This is an odd way to behave for people who are supposed to be misogynistic.

We should strive to use our concepts clearly.

It's in the interest of feminists who are critical of the trans movement, to correctly describe the problem here - as an injustice impinged on female athletes, but one borne out of trans athletes' ambitions and self-understanding, not their hatred of women.

To call everything misogyny will strike most people as monomania, or at least as intellectual laziness. It will also provoke a backlash among liberal women, who are overwhelmingly in favor of trans rights, as these everything-is-misogyny feminists will be seen as hysterical and driven by transphobia.

If gender critical feminists are to make strides among liberal women and gain them as allies, they need to tone down some of their own arguments and make a more precise and objective use of words and concepts. Otherwise, their only allies for the cause of women in women's sports, will be conservatives, who will welcome feminists' heated rhetoric as reflecting their own feelings about trans people.

r51 Their inability to behave femininely is due to the fact that most trans women (or at least most trans activists) are at core straight men, to whom femininity doesn't come naturally. But that doesn't mean these people hate women, just like the inability of many gay men to "act like a man" doesn't mean they hate men (I'm myself a somewhat fem gay guy and I don't hate men - I love them).

When dealing with people on the left, gender critical feminists should argue that trans women who consider themselves as women are misguided in their self-understanding and philosophically wrong. If they go straight to the argument that trans women are misogynists, then they will lose all the liberal women who have trans women as family or friends, or who sympathize with trans women for the oppression they face (and they do face a lot of oppression, especially the ones who are non-white and attracted to men).

Feminists should focus more on the pragmatic aspects of the trans movement - for example, on the threat that reducing sexual identity to self-identification has the reproductive rights of women. They should not dwell much on psychoanalyzing trans activists and portraying them as cartoon villains plotting to take over feminist spaces merely because of a pathological hatred of women.

The dialogue on the trans women side of trans activism is exclusively anti-feminist and anti-female, and becoming more aggressive and in some cases more violent by the year. Transfascism has worked overtime to erase women in terms of their biology, even going to far as to get the term, "women. wiped out of medical literature about cervical cancer so as not to offend them. It's brought back gender stereotyping of women in a way not seen since the 1950s (according to them, it's female looking like a cartoon character or 1940s pinup).

Women are routinely threatened with violence by trans women and their defenders.
