Anything involving Debra Wilson.

Her parodies of Oprah, Whitney, Mariah, Beyoncé, along with her Bunifa Latifah Halifah Sharifa Jackson character... the show wasn't the same after she left.

I don't understand why this show went off the air. Although I know it wasn't live, why couldn't it survive like SNL by bringing in new cast members/writers to keep it going?

by Anonymousreply 14October 13, 2018 5:47 PM

I stopped watching the show a while ago... probably around the Jordan Peele/Keegan Michael Key era, but it apparently kept airing until at least two years ago. I checked out some of the sketches and they're a slog.

I literally identify this show with Michael MacDonald as Andra.

He also has a podcast somewhere where he tells this story about the time he got hired as Faye Dunaway's comedy coach for an audition. Its HYSTERICAL.

by Anonymousreply 24October 13, 2018 6:33 PM

Mad TV could be too coarse at times. However, at its best it was much funnier, subversive and "true to life "than snl ever was. Even it's original characters were way funnier. Snl is for people obsessed with politics while mad TV captured the humor and absurdity in every day life and pop culture. One thing that always irritated me was the relative lack of success the mad TV actors had after the show ended. I can't understand why gifted comedic actors like Michael McDonald and Stephanie Weir and mo Collins went off the radar while less talented comedic performers like Tina Fey and Amy poehler keep getting cast.

by Anonymousreply 25October 13, 2018 6:33 PM

R23 " Now is this funny or is this just fast? " Gilmore girls in a nutshell. They really captured the unnatural, manic speech patterns of the characters.

R25 Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will continue to get work because SNL is like an Ivy League school for comedians. Because it has been on the air for over 40 years, it has produced numerous comedians, writers, producers and other behind-the-scenes people. SNL graduates can rely on this network to keep getting jobs.

I hadn't heard of Julia Sweeney for quite some time but she is going to play Aidy Bryant's mom in a new show produced by Lorne Michaels.

Also, the way that each SNL show is put together every week is unique. From what I've read, SNLers have the opportunity to produce their own sketches from scratch and they same this is an invaluable learning opportunity. This gives them the skills and confidence to write and produce their own stuff after they leave the show.

It was great the first 6-7 seasons.

Something seemed to go down backstage when Mo Collins left suddenly, then a whole host of the original cast followed.

But Debra Wilson was the best. I wonder if she had a breakdown or something, because she has literally disappeared into the ether.

by Anonymousreply 133October 23, 2018 3:46 PM

Debra Wilson appeared in the recent MadTV revival on the CW. She has done a ton of voice work and also made lots of indie movies I've never heard of. So she's been around, she hasn't quit the biz or anything like that. But it's sad that she hasn't appeared in much of anything that elevated her to the level she deserves. It's been that way with most of the amazing female cast members of the show, unfortunately. I think Alex Borstein has been the most successful.

Thanks, OP, for posting this thread. I've been laughing so hard! I was a regular viewer but forgot how wild and crazy it was. The Darlene MacBride clips are priceless.

The MAD TV cast was brilliant. SNL can't hold a candle to it. Yes, it has its moments but I always preferred MAD TV.

Debra Wilson was amazing, a true comic genius. I met her once after she left the show. She was a judge at the World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma. The contest was over (they judged real dogs) and she was just hanging around in the crowd. I went over to her and told her how much I loved her on MAD TV and how sorry I was she left the show. She was so tiny, totally wired, and very talkative. She told me how after all those years on the show she asked for more money and they refused to give it to her so she left. It was so poignant. I'm glad she's been steadily working (checked her bio on IMDB) but she deserved to do a lot better. Such a huge talent.

I also loved Aries Spears, Michael McDonald, Mo Sullivan (especially Stuart and his mom). Really, all of them. I haven't had tome to watch all the clips but I'll certainly be returning again and again.

Re Stuart: You can tell satire is dead when you read in the comments people saying it's bad/awful to make fun of autistic people or men-children who still live with their mother because of mental issues. These idiots don't realize that Stuart is supposed to be a small child. He's just being played by grown man. And he acts like that because he's spoiled rotten. His mother is trying to overcompensate for the father walking out on them.
