I grew up in a mixed neighborhood, and I noticed when the Black people I knew said they didn't eat pork they were specifically referring to pigs' feet, or pigs knuckles, chitterlings, and stuff like that. Now and then they would eat some BBQ'd pork ribs, but for the most part all pork parts were avoided. When I asked an older neighbor why, he said that "the swine is a filthy animal. It'll eat anything. So you never know which part of a pig you're really eating." It certainly gave me pause when I considered what he said. I do like a lean piece of pork now and then. Another person told me that"Pork is the closest thing you will get to eating human flesh." I was too through after that.

There are multiple reasons. In some cases, it's a holdover from the old slavery days. The cheapest cuts of pork (like chitterlings) were given to the slaves, while the more select cuts of pork were sent to the big house. Mind you, it's not like it's a tradition that was carried down over 150 years, but African-Americans learned a great deal more about their ancestors' history in the 60s and 70s, and that seemed to be a turning point for many AA people. My local grocer still stocks chitterlings, pigs feet and pork spareribs, so it's not something that's applied by all segments of AA people.

My ex (he's black) shies away from pork, most of the time, and I know most of my black co-workers do, too.

Well, the British and others eat wild boar for centuries, and they eat pork belly now. Pork is everywhere in most northern countries in Europe for that reason. Then there are the mutton and lamb eaters. Goats too. Some beef. Game and venison are still popular in England. I'm Italian, and our family ancestors came from up in the hilly regions, so they ate pork. Loved it. Seasoned wwith fresh Garlic and fennel it's wonderful. Used in sauces too, and for sausage making. I found among the Africans Americans I know who don't eat pork, a lot of them love goat meat and lamb.

The only place I ever experienced this phenomena was Atlanta. I grew up in the south and have relatives over several states ,and since most werent well off they lived and worked with black people. I probably associated with black folks more than the average southern joe of the 60s -70s. Not only did they all eat pork,it was almost a religion on how to bbq it just right . Id bet my bottom dollar that 90% of the non pork eaters enjoy some ham or bacon on a regular basis! I was about 8 the first time I had chittlins,an old black neighbor of my uncle had cooked up a batch and I remember thinking the smell was atrocious. But when I had that first bite,YUM !

I wouldn't single out black people, since many do eat pork. Lots of people in general don't eat pork. Across multiple religions, pork is seen as unclean, and religion affects cultural practices.

I used to have a neighbor who would rant at me about how he'd decided he was a black Israelite, and how he was more authentic than Jews. Whatever, dude. He didn't eat pork. He wouldn't let his kids celebrate Halloween, either. Apparently that's a slippery slope into Satanism.

Pigs are actually clean but don’t have pores so they wallow in mud to cool off. At least that’s what I’ve always heard. People I know who have pet pigs claim they are very clean and will defecate in one spot.

R36 - Black person here. The reasons for many but NOT ALL Black Americans not eating pork is religious, cultural/economic & health wise. Most people in the thread have it correct.

Eating pork is forbidden in all three major religious texts (Christian, Muslim & Jewish) because it is a three hoofed animal. Animals with three hoofs were considered unclean.

Also pork was forgone because throughout American history Blacks were only offered the lower quality pork products like chitterlings and pig feet. Even I was introduced to things like Canadian Bacon and Pork Loin only as an adult. As the Black population's quality of life and income continues to grow, the lower quality pork products are being eliminated out of Black life. We have begun to understand the reason why we were given those pork products.

Finally, Blacks have become more health conscious and realize that all those lower end pork products (which consisted of more fat than actual meat) that older generations were brought up on are bad for health. Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. have made many Black Americans change their diets.

I have a good friend who is black; he doesn't eat beef OR pork. He's a Seventh-Day Adventist. (He does eat lamb and poultry, however.)

Bacon and ham should be off the table for anyone over 55 especially African Americans. Too much sodium. Chitterlings are high in cholesterol and saturated fat.

If you're a meat eater pork chops and other cuts of pork that aren't processed aren't any worse than other meat.

That said I'm old and remember how my mother and many other people prepared pork chops. Thin cuts cooked to death.

Jews aren't supposed to eat pork because the Bible (you know, the big book of fairy tales) says they can only eat the meat of animals with split hooves AND chew their cuds. While pigs do have split hooves, they don't chew their hooves and Jewish tradition says that because of that they are unclean. They're not even supposed to touch a pig's carcass. I have lots of Jews in my family through marriage and all the younger ones are pork eating Jews. I think that tradition in Judaism is getting less and less.

Jews also aren't supposed to eat crabs or any other animal bounty from the water that don't have fins and scales because without fins and scales the animal is unclean. Just antiquated idiotic beliefs.

I'm black and I eat pork. Then again, I'm not a religious nut job so it shouldn't be a surprise. The blacks I know who don't eat pork are, particularly Seventh Day Adventists. I do not know personally any black Muslims.

I am Australian and when I was an exchange student in Florida, after 3 weeks as a shabbas goy which were the worst of my life, I got a job waiting tables at a diner on Sunday mornings.

We would get the church crowd. Often men would order "sirloin ribs", because they sound high class, and would get annoyed when they were served beef in stead of pork.

Jews in olden times died from the foods the OT said was unclean because it was difficult to preserve and keep the food. That is why they outlawed it religiously. Plenty of southern blacks eat pork regularly. Also, in the new testament, Christ says to one of the apostles that he made everything clean, that it was people that made things unclean.
