Melania looks fine.

by Anonymousreply 21October 11, 2018 9:49 PM

Michelle Obama, overall, dressed better than any First Lady since Jackie Kennedy.

I think Melania has had more misses, but she’s doing her thing and I don’t hate her the way some of you do.

You won’t find it, because it doesn’t exist. Now, can we stop repeating Trump lie # 367&6 that Melania was a fashion model? Where’s the “hard evidence”?

She was a hooker then and she’s a hooker now.

I don’t think that Melania’s clothes are awful, per se. They’re obviously well made. But she always looks like she’s wearing a costume, more akin to Malificent and Carmen Sandiego than a real person.

I remember seeing pictures of Melania when she was younger and I used to like some of her outfits, but there is always something wrong about the way she carries herself. She’s always a bit tacky, regardless of what she wears.

R12, EVERYONE knows that quote is attributed to Kathryn Parker! And OP, Michelle Obama may be smart and a seemingly nice person but she DOES NOT know fashion. Sorry but she does not know how to dress for her body type. Melanie on the other hand may or may not be a nice person but she does know fashion. Clothes look good on her.

by Anonymousreply 71October 12, 2018 12:50 AM

R24 There is a photo of her in the SI swimsuit issue with a big inflatable dolphin, and she did do a few print ads as well.

I don't think that she or even he has claimed she did runway work. She was a model in the same way that Howard Stern's wife Beth Ostrovsky was. They did bridal mags and catalogs. No one refers to either as a big girl in the biz, but that does not mean that they did not work.

I would post the SI pic but I don't know how. It is readily available online though.

by Anonymousreply 72October 12, 2018 1:17 AM

Melania misses far more than she hits. She just doesn't have taste and she's aiming for young. Fact is, she's past it. I did like the yellow and magenta evening gowns.

I used to think Michelle Obama had more misses than hits, but looking at these pictures, she really could pick an outfit for the most part. I always think of her in poodle skirts and kitten sweaters, don't know why. But she looked good.

What I'd kill to see is how Melania has done up the private quarters upstairs at the White House. It's not uncommon for Architectural Digest to score a spread but so far it hasn't happened. I'm dying to see. I am not sure the Obamas did it either.

by Anonymousreply 73October 12, 2018 1:27 AM

Sorry, the Obamas did. It isn't my taste but I also really like it... very warm and a nice mix of styles. Really like it.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 74October 12, 2018 1:30 AM

Melania is tall and broad. She has really no waist. She uses fabric to give herself s shape. She adds fabric to widen her shoulder for a waist or wears a circle skirt to give herself a waist. Doesn't work. She has enormous fake boobs that ruin the line of her clothes. She would look better in simple silhouettes that are tailored around the bust. She needs to get rid of the wig and the fillers around her eyes.

by Anonymousreply 75October 12, 2018 1:40 AM

[quote] I'm dying to see. I am not sure the Obamas did it either.

Here ya go, R73. Also, it is worth noting that it is reported that the Obama's forsook the budgeted money that goes towards the White House private residence decorating and used their own money. The Trump's on the other hand used that budget and much more. It's reported that the Trump's used donated inaugural money for private residence decoration.

by Anonymousreply 76October 12, 2018 1:47 AM

Nice try R72. But as a matter of fact, both Donald and Melania lied their asses off about her entire past including her education and modeling work. The lies are documented in the link at R47. As part of his many lies to the media, he repeatedly referred to her as a successful European supermodel when he first introduced her as his girlfriend.

by Anonymousreply 77October 12, 2018 1:47 AM

Michelle knows what she likes, and what works for her. The girl dresses like she thinks a First Lady should dress, and she's a whore.

by Anonymousreply 78October 12, 2018 1:47 AM

Michelle Obama was comfortable in her own skin and it showed, especially in sporty clothes. She had a definite style, and stuck to it most of the time.

Melania does look like she’s playing dress up, trying different looks, different costumes. She not as sure of herself.

Then, too, I wonder if our perception isn’t influenced by our knowledge of her past?

by Anonymousreply 79October 12, 2018 1:48 AM

The big thing about Melania is that she has no confidence. She never wears her clothes with pride and she never owns it. That's one of the main reasons why she looks so bad most of the time.

With Michelle, even in her worst outfits she still has a smile on and her confidence shines.

by Anonymousreply 80October 12, 2018 1:49 AM

I agree with that. The white hat and suit were not awful, but an obvious miss.

Remember when we found out that Melania worked illegally without a green card? But journalists just don’t care about that anymore, because emails, Kanye in the White House and other super important things.

From the article:

“Melania Trump was paid for 10 modeling jobs in the US worth $20,056 that occurred in the seven weeks before she had legal permission to work in the country”

Ok, so Melania received 2 grand per “modeling job”? That’s not how this works for successful fashion models. Melania has said that she was a very successful model on the runways of Milan and Paris, which is bullshit.

You can watch the Larry King interview right after their wedding where both Trumps talk about her supermodel career.

It's funny because one Howard referred to Beth O as a supermodel when they were dating and she was genuinely mortified. She knew exactly what she was and was not...a working NY model--nothing else.

But Melania did look cute in the SI shoot, and the pic was not racy at all(like those horrid jet photos which looked to be art directed by Trump himself.)

by Anonymousreply 114October 12, 2018 12:45 PM

What I thought was interesting was finding out that Victoria Silvstedt was Melania’s roommate when they both lived in Paris. Victoria was Playmate of the Year and one of the most beautiful but look a little deeper in her history and there are a lot of rumors about her activities including on the data lounge.

It's ONLY a big deal as a topic for people into identity politics to snark about. One can do both. She looks nice AND snark about the political correctness of it all. Surely you understand 2 conflicting ideas can be held at the same time, being on DL.

by Anonymousreply 118October 12, 2018 1:33 PM

What I like and liked about Michelle is that she knows the power of her position and platform. MANY young and unknown minority fashion designers lives were literally changed because of her recognition.

by Anonymousreply 119October 12, 2018 2:21 PM

R108 That was perhaps the most unfortunate photo ever printed of poor Michelle. Imagine having to compete with 2 model bodies!

And from behind which is not your best angle. I remember once reading some doctor who claimed she suffers from what orthopedic surgeons call "ghetto booty." It is a swayback condition which frequently afflicts African and AA women.

Melania just has an ex stripper vibe to her. The spray tan, the boob job, the badly Botoxed face. Ivanka has intentionally upstaged her as the true fashion darling /First Lady of the WH. Lots of plastic surgery work on that face as well but not obvious. You would have never guessed she once had a slackjaw, pudgy face, and crooked nose.

by Anonymousreply 128October 12, 2018 4:51 PM

R114, I think she got jaw surgery to correct her underbite.

The brows she also fixed through microblading (she got suspiciously thicker brows in the last 2 years of the WH when she originally had pencil thin brows).

They're trying to make her into something that she is not. In the link is part 2 of her interview last night. And, given the amount of YouTube hits no one is watching it or her. But, two things I would like to point out; 1) Notice at the one minute mark how her staff (save one person) are all wearing Black or very dark blues. That looks like a set up to me. 2) If ever you thought that a GOP internet strategy was just a conspiracy just look at the comments of this video (and the others if you want) and you will see that they are 99% negative towards ABCNews. That's rather strange, non? Here's a sampling;

"Terrible that ABC didn't just show the Interview & clips with Melania, instead they edited the hell out of this, cut off her answers & edit it with people saying nasty things about She & Trump? Things that she can't even respond to? why didn't the interviewer says THOSE things to Her Face? It's supposed to be Being Melania Not a hit piece, But of course it's ABC Mockingbird Media. Melania still shines despite ABC's Attempt to make She & Trump look bad. What an elegant well spoken Woman. Great wife & Mother."

"Melania is correct, the bullying is direct and very subtle, just like ABC's little piece on her. ABC complains about Donald being crude but you can see that for yourself , however media is a bit more " hidden " in their criticism. Think about it for a moment,, would ABC have aired this type of mystery theater on Michelle ? Probably not , I'm certain it would have been presented in a much more favorable light , instead of the Rod Serling science fiction approach. Subtle."

"People will do anything to attack her. She is just another human being, when will people have common sense and treat her with the respect she deserves."

"NEVER. Despite being a smart, five language speaking supermodel, we will never see her on the cover of a fashion magazine. Instead, we're still seeing Michelle. The media has NO intention of ever cutting Melania a break...just hoping to subtly finding an opportunity to make fun of her or get her to say something off about her husband. I have no idea why she would ever agree to be interviewed....colossal waste of her time."

"abc NEWS, the only thing you accomplished here was to make her even more amazing and how ridiculously STUPID and FAKE as hell you are... unbelievable !!"

"This interview was such bullshit and a waste of Time."

"Pretty shabby "profile." Melania's an old-World, old-fashioned, intelligent but relatively simple woman. She doesn't get a tenth of the respect of any other First Lady in living memory because of her husband's politics. A better title for this would be "Being the Mainstream Media as it Carries On Its War on the Right." Just another reminder as to why I, and millions of others, avoid the MSM."

"I found the interview hostile toward our FLOTUS. Why must the media hate on her? She's a lovely woman who is doing a fine job. Leave her be!"

"ABCD had no intentions of giving her a fair and honest interview instead they used it as bashing President Trump. They edited what she would be saying from the full sentences and then interjected negative things about the president. This was not an interview of Melania it was to bash her husband. R21 is being honest. I love Michelle Obama as a person. But to say she is beautiful or hot is total rose colored glasses bullshit. She's not disgusting but she's not beautiful. Melanie doesn't look like a real person to me so I don't find her beautiful or not either. She looks like a First Lady mass produced by Matel.

R138, she's modelling bracelets in that photo.

by Anonymousreply 154October 14, 2018 3:03 AM

Melania doesn’t wear her clothes. Most of the time they wear her.

If she wore simpler, classic timeless designs, she’d be fine.

She overdoes it. Big sleeves, odd lines, bias cut stuff. She needs a simple silhouette.

by Anonymousreply 155October 14, 2018 3:14 AM

I miss Michelle.

by Anonymousreply 156October 14, 2018 3:19 AM

I simply loved Michelle Obama as first lady, but I think she had a lot of misses fashion-wise.

I think Melania is pretty useless as first lady however I think she looks fantastic a lot of the time. I think she has a great sense of fashion and style, it's too bad she seems to be pretty shallow underneath the clothes...

by Anonymousreply 157October 14, 2018 3:29 AM

R138 Cindy Crawford and 3 other top models of the 80s-90s did Playboy. Would you not describe that as soft porn as well? Nude photography does not mean one wasn't a working model; and I have always claimed she was only a working model. I have never maintained she was anywhere close to a top name brand model.

You can pan her looks all you want, but can you say with a straight face that she wasn't attractive enough to do catalog work at 5'10? Shit, I am 5'8 1/2 and even I did a lot of catalogue work out of fucking ATL in the 80s. And I have never even called myself a model...just a girl making a few bucks to supplement her real job.

And finally, can anyone provide any porny photography she did BEFORE she met Donald? You know, when she was an escort in Paris with Victoria Silvestadt?(sp?) It is my opinion that pervy Trump pushed her to do that shit so he could brag to other men: "see what a great body she has? I fuck that every night!" Sadly a lot of men push their women to do Playboy et al just for that reason.

by Anonymousreply 158October 14, 2018 3:38 AM

by Anonymousreply 164October 14, 2018 4:34 AM

R163, so you're posting a "joke" picture about Michelle from Alex Jones. What is your point?

I mean, I'm not the one saying Melania is a real model and dresses well.

I'm the one refraining from pictures of Melania figuring herself.

I suppose I can post her soft porn pictures or her pre surgery face.

But that crap is too ugly and unfunny for me.

by Anonymousreply 165October 14, 2018 4:50 AM

I actually think Melania can sometimes look stunning, but 99% of the time she always looks stiff and overdressed. Michelle Obama genuinely had flair but she wore her clothes more easily--as Liza would say, SHE wore THEM; they didn't wear her.

by Anonymousreply 166October 14, 2018 5:17 AM

Her pre-surgery face was gorgeous. It was pointed out here a long time ago that she looked a bit like Paulina.

She is not a Kyle case. Kylie was a plain fugly little girl before cosmetic surgery, Melania was a very pretty woman before hers.

And I have not mentioned beauty once until this comment, but since you brought it up, Michelle is no beauty in the face herself. Her look comes from an all over put together look, not beauty. If you showed the pics of Michelle and Melania and took them to some hole in the wall where no one knew either, you know damn good and well Melania would win the beauty contest hands down. Michelle looks like a bull dog in the face half the time because of her underbite, and her rear view is hilarious.

You in. You brought out the ugly in me. I said up thread that I would never besmirch Michelle because I admire her and she does the most with what she has to work with. And she does. But, unfortunately you got under my skin here at the end, and so I did dishonor the last FLOTUS,

Congrats. I'm done. You sound oddly like the poster who soiled the entire thread about Heather Locklear with your insane ravings that she was a drug whore and no one should speak well of her. You called her plain and basic bitch.

Then you went on to speak about how beautiful and talented Whitney Houston was, and if people spoke badly about her for being a drug addict, then no one should speak well of Heather who was completely without redeeming qualities.

by Anonymousreply 167October 14, 2018 7:36 AM

I think Melania prefers a more European style perspective on fashion. Michelle has that cute/classy American thing going on. Both have their hits and misses but overall I think Melania does it better mainly because she has a more attractive face/figure.

by Anonymousreply 190October 14, 2018 10:14 AM

Melania may have a more attractive figure, but her face is shit. And she hasn't a shred of integrity, so fuck her. Michelle wins.

by Anonymousreply 191October 14, 2018 10:20 AM

R190, Melania’s style is not European, which is much more understated.

She wears European designers but her outfits always look like the interior decor of their Trump Tower apartment.

by Anonymousreply 192October 14, 2018 10:37 AM

To the poster who said that Melania looked like Paulina Porizkova, that's a hard nyet. First of all, Paulina was a real model and a very successful one. Here's a picture of PP nude, just to show you how a real model does nude. Always tasteful, never cheap and tacky unlike Melania.

If Melania wants to tell the world that she was a model, then I would like to see some hard evidence. Catalogue model? Show me the catalogues. They don't exist.

There's no doubt that Melania was a pretty girl, and she had the right height for modeling. But, she is not versatile and has one facial expression, and her big surgically placed tits would have been detrimental for any fashion modeling.

[quote] but she really wasn’t/isn’t the fashion plate she’s often presented to be...

Probably because she is much more substantive than just being a fashion plate. Michelle Obama made careers for unknown designers. She used her platform to definitely make advancements for causes that she believed in. She gave J. Crew new life. She inspired the average women that they too could afford many of her fashions. Maybe not everything but one or two pieces. A lot of fashion that Michelle Obama wore literally sold out as women rushed to buy the same items.

What Michelle Obama Wore and Why It Mattered

It began with Jay Leno.

It began, to be more specific, in October 2008, when Mr. Leno, the host of “The Tonight Show” at the time, turned to his guest, Michelle Obama, the wife of the Democratic nominee for president, and said — with glee, with gotcha expectation, because it had just been revealed that the campaign clothes budget for Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, was $150,000 — “I want to ask you about your wardrobe. I’m guessing about 60 grand? Sixty, 70 thousand for that outfit?”

“J. Crew,” Mrs. Obama said of her silk blouse, gold skirt and cardigan fastened with a big rhinestone brooch. “Ladies, we know J. Crew. You can get some good stuff online!”

And thus was an eight-year obsession born. Not to mention a new approach to the story of dress and power.

When Mrs. Obama understood the impact of that early answer — when she saw the public response to her outfit (which had been chosen specifically as a riposte to the Palin news) — it set in motion a strategic rethink about the use of clothes that not only helped define her tenure as first lady, but also started a conversation that went far beyond the label or look that she wore and that is only now, maybe, reaching its end.

Though amid discussion of legacy and historical change fashion may seem the least of the matter, consider the number of words devoted to what both the first lady and President Obama wore since the original campaign began. Consider that for five and a half years there was a blog chronicling Mrs. Obama’s wardrobe choices, arguably the first devoted to the clothes of a political figure, and that when Mr. Obama wore a tan suit to a news conference it practically broke the internet (ditto when he eschewed a tie). Consider that Mrs. Obama’s effect on fashion brands was the subject of a study by a New York University professor in the Harvard Business Review entitled “How This First Lady Moves Markets.”

Consider all that, and there is simply no ignoring the fact that during these two terms, clothing played a role unlike any it had ever played before in a presidential administration.

A noncomprehensive litany of some of the designers whose clothes the first lady wore during her husband’s two terms in office includes: Carolina Herrera, Narciso Rodriguez, Michael Kors, Maria Cornejo, Thom Browne, Isabel Toledo, Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Marchesa, Tom Ford, Vera Wang, Tadashi Shoji, Cushnie et Ochs, Tory Burch, Naeem Khan, Brandon Maxwell, Rodarte, Bibhu Mohapatra, Zac Posen, Barbara Tfank, Alexander Wang, Rag & Bone, Joseph Altuzarra, Tracy Reese, Monique Lhuillier, Thakoon, Christian Siriano, Calvin Klein, Sophie Theallet, Reed Krakoff, Diane von Furstenberg, Derek Lam, Proenza Schouler and Alice & Olivia. Also Talbots. And Target. And Ann Taylor. Sheesh.

Plus, of course: Gucci, Versace, Givenchy, Alaïa, Junya Watanabe, Christopher Kane, Roksanda, Moschino, Lanvin (those controversial expensive sneakers), Dries Van Noten, Alexander McQueen, Duro Olowu, Lanvin and Kenzo. To name a few.

It is, by any measure, an unprecedented list.

The twin conditions of the historic nature of this presidency and the fact it occurred alongside the rise of social media, which turned every public second into a shareable, comment-worthy moment, combined to create a new reality where every appearance mattered. Not everyone listened to all of the speeches or read the analysis or considered the context. But everyone paused for a moment to assess the visual. And a couple who had spent their entire lives being scrutinized as pioneers understood what that meant, and instead of bridling at it, leveraged it. If you know everyone is going to see what you wear and judge it, then what you wear becomes fraught with meaning. Certainly Mrs. Obama’s significance as a contemporary role model goes far beyond her image, but no one understood the role of fashion, and the potential uses of that, better than the first lady.

by Anonymousreply 217October 14, 2018 9:53 PM

“She realized very early on that everything she did had ramifications,” said Thom Browne, who made the tailored coat and dress Mrs. Obama wore for the inaugural parade in 2013, as well as a dress she wore to the 2012 Democratic National Convention and also during the final debate that year. And she understood, he went on, “that people did not just want to know how she looked, but what she was about,” and that she could plant subliminal cues to the latter with her clothes.

Change was the promise, and change was the look — far beyond the amount of upper arm on display, or the riot of color and prints. Or the cardigans.

Just because something appears trivial does not mean it is any less powerful as a means of persuasion and outreach. In some ways its very triviality — the fact that everyone could talk about it, dissect it, imitate it — makes fashion the most potentially viral item in the subliminal political toolbox. Talking heads complained early on in the second term about Mrs. Obama’s allowing the clothes conversation to dominate the substance conversation, but in fact she made the two inextricable.

There have been a lot of words since the 2016 election devoted to how Mrs. Obama loved fashion and fashion loved her in return, and that is true; to listen to designers who have dressed her is to hear a chorus of “it was the privilege of my career.” That the first lady, a Princeton-and-Harvard-educated lawyer and hospital power player, was publicly able to enjoy clothes allowed a swath of smart women to stop being so neurotic about dress (as she said to Vogue in her third cover story, the most of any first lady, one of the factors in choosing a garment always has to be, “Is it cute?”).

But her real contribution went far beyond giving women a license to like clothes and use them to celebrate their own strength and femininity. Just as, despite the attention paid to the study on how much the first lady was worth to a brand — “I have been publishing for 25 years,” said David Yermack, the author of the study and a professor of finance at the N.Y.U. Stern School of Business, “and nothing has compared to the interest in this” — it wasn’t ultimately about revenue generation. Indeed, despite Mrs. Obama’s patronage, a number of labels she wore have struggled financially, including J. Crew; Maria Pinto, which closed; and Bibhu Mohapatra, which filed for bankruptcy last week.

Rather, like first ladies from Jacqueline Kennedy to Nancy Reagan, Mrs. Obama understood that fashion was a means to create an identity for an administration. But unlike any other first lady, instead of seeing it as part of a uniform to which she had to conform, with the attendant rules and strictures that implies, she saw it as a way to frame her own independence and points of difference, add to her portfolio and amplify her husband’s agenda.

“Our glorious diversity — our diversities of faiths and colors and creeds — that is not a threat to who we are; it makes us who we are,” she said during her final speech, and the proof was, literally, on her back. While most first ladies turned to a small number of trusted designers to help them create their look (Oleg Cassini with Mrs. Kennedy; Adolfo and James Galanos with Mrs. Reagan; Oscar de la Renta with Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush) Mrs. Obama seemed to work with them all.

That is not a situation that, as any woman would know, happens by accident. We all tend to gravitate toward certain designers in part because of sheer laziness: We know what suits us, what we like, and so we go there first. To have been so, well, evenhanded in her choices could have happened only with careful calculation.

We should start a DL investigation to uncover Melania’s old fashion modeling pictures. How can she keep up the “fashion model” scam when there are no damn pictures to prove that she’s ever worked as a model prior to meeting Trump?

Are the pictures in Kenya with President Obama’s birth certificate? How does she get away with this lie?

by Anonymousreply 219October 14, 2018 9:57 PM

“I am not sure people really realized the extent of what she was doing,” said Tracy Reese, whose custom-made pink and gold silk dress, worn by Mrs. Obama for her speech at the 2012 Democratic convention, became her best-selling dress when remade for sale, and whose black dress with big red poppies, worn by the first lady for the 50th anniversary of the 1963 march on Washington, is now on display at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture. “It was really about us all.”

Especially because Mrs. Obama not only wore their clothes, she also took their business seriously, framing fashion as a credible, covetable job choice during her education initiatives. She put fashion on a par with the movies by hosting a Fashion Education workshop at the White House, just as she had held a Careers in Film Symposium. She invited students to witness Jason Wu donating his first inaugural gown to the Smithsonian, and designers were occasionally included on the guest list for state dinners alongside officials, artists and executives — though no designer ever attended twice.

“She came in at a time when the economy was particularly tough and really shone a light on fashion in the broadest sense,” said Narciso Rodriguez, whose dress she wore on the night in 2008 that ushered in the Obama era, and recently at the National School Counselor of the Year event when she gave her last speech as first lady. If you think that was an accident, there’s a bridge I can sell you — just as the fact she wore Jason Wu to her husband’s farewell address in Chicago, a designer she also wore at both inaugural balls, was no coincidence. It was closure.

Mrs. Obama’s dress choices were often labeled “sartorial diplomacy” and “democratic,” and they were that; she made something of an art out of pairing designers with countries during state dinners or trips, wearing, for example, Mr. Khan, an Indian-American designer, to the India state dinner, and Mr. Ford, an American designer then based in London, when she dined with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. Especially in her husband’s second term, Mrs. Obama used her leverage and visibility not only to raise the profile of a host of local designers (the biggest struggle for a young designer, Mr. Wu said, is attention; she solved that), but also as argument against isolationism and in support of allies across the world. It was not happenstance that she wore a Gucci gown to the Kennedy Center Honors the same day Italy went to the polls to vote on a referendum widely viewed as a verdict on Matteo Renzi, the country’s now former reformist prime minister.

But above all, her wardrobe was representative of the country her husband wanted to lead.

It was about the melting pot and the establishment; the 1 percent and the accessible. There was something in her closet for everyone, yet she was beholden to no designer — free of any specific allegiance to, or association with, a brand. She worked at a remove, through her aide Meredith Koop, and no designers contacted for this article said they knew when the clothes she bought would be worn (if they were for personal use she did buy them, though often at a discount; if they were for state occasions, they were donated by the designer and archived, either at the National Archives or a museum). They were not told in advance, and they found out at the same time everyone else did. It was a business relationship, not a personal one.

Will it continue? To a certain extent both Samantha Cameron, the wife of the former British prime minister David Cameron, and the Duchess of Cambridge have taken a page from Mrs. Obama’s wardrobe book, swinging from high to low, working with a variety of London Fashion Week designers, and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau has done so in Canada. But according to Professor Yermack, who looked into the market response to both the Duchess of Cambridge and Carla Bruni Sarkozy, when she was first lady of France, “they had nowhere near the same effect.”

It may be because the point of what Mrs. Obama wore was never simply that it was good to mix up your wardrobe among a group of designers, but rather that clothes were most resonant when they were an expression of commitment to an idea, or an ideal, that had resonance. And maybe it shouldn’t really matter if anyone else in her position adopts the same approach. Each administration writes its own catechism, after all. Whether we follow is up to us.

R219 the deplorables don't want to know the truth. They want her to be an architect turned super model, they don't care that she's a low rent model/ high end hooker. A lot of non deplorables have bought into the poor beleaguered First Lady idea. So they don't push for the truth. Outing her as a hooker could come off as sexist. That's how they get away with the scam.

I really miss the Obama White House. Not enough has been written or is known about how inclusive and open the Obamas purposely wanted the White House to be. They proactively and aggressively reached out to the average and ordinary citizen to come and experience the White House--"The people's house"

I miss reading about the State Dinner For Children; the LGBT(A-Z) reception and dinner; and many, many, other events that included an average schmoe like me.

And, Mrs. Obama's clothing choices and the designers she used only amplified that attitude. As the DESIGNERS in the article noted;

“it was the privilege of my career.”

The thing about Michelle Obama is that she always looks to be enjoying herself, and what she is wearing seems (to me) to express that joy as well. As noted above by several posters, Michelle used her position as FLOTUS to give opportunities to many young designers. And she always exuded confidence, seeming not to give a rats' ass whether or not other people liked her fashion choices.

Melania, on the other hand, has a better figure than Michelle, but projects little confidence. And with good reason. Everything about her is dubious - her 'modeling' career, her citizenship, her marriage, and her husband's fraudulent presidency. One thing I find odd is that Melania often seems to favor low hemlines and bias cut skirts, which do not show off her figure so much as swath her in fabric. Her look is a throwback to the 50s, and I believe she is deliberately encouraged to dress this way to evoke nostalgia for what the deplorables consider the 'good old days.'

[quote]Not sure if Melanie wears a wig or not, either way it's gorgeous. Michelle's wigs on the other hand looked ratty and cheap.

And, you're just looking for friends in order to keep this thread going. The fact is that the girl does nothing. Now, that's her right. She wouldn't be the FLOTUS that wasn't active. But, the problem is that it is a bad reflection upon Trump. Or, she is not bringing any value to Trump--and he needs it. STOP trying to make her into something that she is not.

This was a Nancy Reagan problem too. Therefore they created the "Just Say No" campaign for her. With this girl, they're still trying to find something that sticks and build some traction. It's definitely not her "Be Best" mess or her opioid campaign.

Some people don’t seem to understand that it’s not all about looking “good” as FLOTUS, it’s also about dressing appropriately for official occasions.

Melania doesn’t know how to dress appropriately and some of her fashion statements have been offensive. She has never been a fashion model, but she seems to think that every event she attends is some sort of imaginary Vogue photo shoot.

And 110 mm heels will never be appropriate when you visit any place after a natural disaster.

Easy to sell out when they made three of them R258

by Anonymousreply 268October 18, 2018 10:35 PM

The tawdry and sad story of Melania is that in fact she tried to be a model for years, particularly in Paris, and she failed. She may consider herself a model out of delusion, shame and pride. I know people in fashion in fashion who report she was around and trying trying trying any not getting bookings or agency rep. She switched to NY and also failed. She didn't give up after she met Trump. But he couldn't make it happen for her, nor could he make it happened for Ivanka. Also, she and he both have horrible taste. She settled for the faux billionaire (he personally was always rich enough, though bankrupted many versions of his companies) and did what HE wanted - the sleazy mens magazine. I dont think she EVER expected to be under the microscope like this when she made her compromises with the Orange turd.

Michelle Obama's massive impact on fashion (VERY GOOD article that is worth reading!)

The program, hosted by the State Department and Elle magazine, included a panel discussion that featured designer Derek Lam. When the conversation came around to first lady Michelle Obama - because how could it not? - Lam dropped his head in a mournful manner and lamented: Her departure from the East Wing signaled the end of a singular era for American fashion.

During her tenure, Obama energized designers, editors and stylists with her fashion-forward wardrobe choices. She made industry insiders stand taller both at home and abroad. She's been an exemplar of modern, fit and confident middle age. She instilled pride and kinship among countless black women.

Melania Trump's Politics Make It Impossible for Me to Like Her Style

I was 13 years old when my mother dragged me to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years — Selections from the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum" exhibit. My mom, who makes dresses herself, has always had a keen love for fashion design and looked to Jackie O. as a style icon. My mother just loved the elegance, sophistication, and grace Onassis (then Kennedy) brought to the Office of the First Lady.

When Michelle Obama arrived in the White House in her accessible J.Crew separates and threads from young, American designers, it felt as if I'd found my generation's Jackie. For eight years I gushed over MObama's now-iconic looks, from her simple but chic sweaters to the slew of grand gowns she used to wear for state dinners.

Now, we've got a new First Lady in the White House. And while I will admit she is well-dressed, I sadly cannot and will not relish in her style choices.

Full disclosure: I am no fan of Donald Trump. He isn't so much of a fan of people who look like me anyway. Everything about him and several members of his family (save for Barron, who can't help whom he's related to) makes my skin crawl. They've proved themselves complicit as this spoiled carrot of a man rips into the fabric of our democracy, encouraging law enforcement to abuse their targets at their leisure, seeking to ban brave trans people who happily serve our country from the military, and ripping families apart while using his office to enrich his own.

Is that garment in [R316] leather? You can see the outline of her her nipples through it. And if it isn't leather than why is a miolionaire's arm candy wearing naugahyde?

While I don't think she looks like a great beauty prior to the facial surgery but she looks like a genuine human woman in her early photos. At some point she started having a constant dour expression and if she were just some random rich man's trophy wife I would feel sorry for her.

BTW how come Donny couldn't buy her a better boob job? Some women get implants that look like the real thing. He's notoriously cheap, so maybe he got these for her by clipping coupons or by using a tenant who owed him back rent. That's my guess.

All in all, rarely pulled off memorable fashion moments.

I can understand resenting Melania's choice in husbands, but she looks a hell of a lot better in clothes than Michelle did/does.

I often found with Michelle Obama the success of an outfit was great affected by what she did with her hair. Melania thinks that if something has a price tag on it of $20,000 it must be classy. Michelle can mix her items up with designer pieces and J Crew and it works. A lot of it comes from within. They have a self image. They chose their clothes to fit their self image whatever the occasion. Michelle knows who SHE is. Melania sees herself in terms of how others see her. She dresses for dramatic effect. Michelle has better judgement of the appropriateness. It's like, on her first trip to Europe for some Conference with other heads of state and their wives, Melania over dressed. She wore some fabulous coat of many colors that I loved, but it was ridiculously expensive couture and it was out of place. The wives of the other leaders were not multi millionaires or billionaires.

I don't know why someone keeps pitting Michelle against Melania here. I truly admired Michelle, and I do not want to denigrate her for any superficial reasons; but these threads are making it hard to stay mute while some LSA'ers continue to wax rhapsodic over Michelle's beauty and style while making fun of Melania.

Michelle is a woman of substance and a fine role model for girls, but she is anything but a beauty. She made the most of what she had to work with, and most of the time she did a good job. But if you took photos of both into a cloistered enclave in which no one knew of either one of the women, I think we all now who would be seen as the most attractive over all.

Can't we lay off the comparisons for a while?

Melania Trump kept warm in a $9,400 Dior coat while attending the National Thanksgiving Turkey pardoning at the White House on Tuesday.

The statement piece from the fashion house's Pre-Fall 2018/Winter 2019 collection features a red, black, and white geometric pattern.

The 48-year-old first lady wore the coat over a black top and pants, topping off her pricey designer look with a pair of over-the-knee Christian Louboutin boots.

Well... that was an excellent scam DIOR pulled!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 415November 21, 2018 5:03 PM

Now, I "get" it. Michelle wears her clothes as if they were indeed hers and she has had the pieces for quite some time. Trump's gal wears clothes as if she has been hired by the designers to display them. She has no sense of style. She is told what to wear and then wears it.

And, NOW somebody really needs to be asking about how these clothes are being paid for! First Ladies buy their own clothes however, they do have an arrangement that if something is gifted to them then it goes into the archives. I don't think that DIOR is gifting their brand new $10K coat... I betcha she's borrowing the clothes, (because Trump ain't paying that type of money), and that would be illegal. Anyone else remember Nancy Reagan and all of the trouble she got into when she "borrowed" clothes?

Everything about the Obama brand is meant to be "accessible." Every thing about the Trump brand is about glamour and opulence. It's as if they come from a by gone era. The Obamas are current, they are attuned to the world of today. The Trumps are bloated leftovers from the 50's Eurotrash lifestyle. Sometimes when I watch Melania robotically stand next to Trump at Mar A Lago, I have to wonder if she finds all the posing with the geriatrics crowd tedious. Melania is short- waisted, has very oversized breasts for her build, and is a mature woman in a very public. elite governmental position. Belts are not her friend; they usually just exaggerate her figure flaws.

Whatever fashion sense she has is very outdated, and certainly does not suit her figure or station. She is in desperate need of a stylist, needs to update the really unattractive hairstyle and ditch the stage makeup. And the hooker heels, even if they are her "favorite style", need to be donated.

Too bad she hasn't gotten the hint that spending thousands of dollars on ill- suited or extravagant designer fashions and relying on her own non-existant flair will never endear her to the American public or make her a reasonable representative as FLOTUS.

Maybe, this is the problem;

Michelle Obama: Melania Trump never reached out to me for advice

Michelle Obama said first lady Melania Trump has never reached out to her for advice, even after Obama extended an invitation as her predecessor Laura Bush did. Obama told ABC News in an interview that aired Sunday that Trump has not asked for any help since the Obamas left the White House in January 2017. “No, she hasn’t,” Obama said when asked if Trump reached out to her at all.

The White House reply;

Kate Bennett ✔ @KateBennett_DC . @StephGrisham45’s response to CNN, re @MichelleObama’s comments: Mrs. Trump is a strong and independent woman who has been navigating her role as First Lady in her own way. When she needs advice on any issue, she seeks it from her professional team within the White House."

BUT:

On Tuesday, the former first lady, 72, took members of her family, including new son-in-law Craig Coyne, on a tour of the White House, where she and husband George W. Bush lived during his two terms in office from 2001 to 2009. The visit took place after Melania Trump extended an invitation to the Bush family to see this year’s “American Treasures”-themed holiday decorations.

AND

The meeting of past and present presidential couples came hours after Trump announced on Twitter that they would gather at the official guest residence. “Looking forward to being with the wonderful Bush family at Blair House today. The former First Lady will be coming over to the White House this morning to be given a tour of the Christmas decorations by Melania. The elegance & precision of the last two days have been remarkable!” the 45th president wrote early Tuesday morning.

BUT, REALLY AND!

Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Trump’s friendship was first formed after the January 2017 inauguration. “I’ve talked to Melania. I’ve been back and had tea with her,” the mother of two told CNN in November 2017, adding that Melania has “done a lovely job” as first lady and that she is a “wonderful representative for the United States.”

Oh, really?

Michelle Obama's memoir "Becoming" has become the best selling book of the year in the United States, surpassing Michael Wolff's "Fire and Fury" and others. Sales for Michelle Obama memoir top 2 million copies

Michelle Obama's "Becoming" is selling at a pace rarely seen for a political memoir, or any nonfiction book.

Combined hardcover, e-book and audio sales in the U.S. and Canada topped 2 million copies in the first 15 days, Crown Publishing announced Friday. By comparison, former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's memoir "Living History" needed a month to sell 1 million copies. Former President George W. Bush's "Decision Points" took several weeks to reach 2 million. Former President Bill Clinton's "My Life" quickly sold 1 million copies but took far longer to hit 2 million.

"Becoming," which came out Nov. 13, now has 3.4 million hardcover copies in print. The former first lady is in the midst of a promotional tour, with guests including Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon.

Melania Trump's poll numbers plummet

Washington (CNN)Melania Trump's favorable rating has fallen by double-digits, according to a new CNN poll. The first lady, whose favorability stood at 54% in October, has slipped to 43% in just two months.

Additionally, 36% of those polled found her unfavorable, a 6-point increase since October. The 11-point drop-off is notable for Trump, who has for most of 2018 maintained positive polling numbers, staying in the high-40s to high-50s. However, unlike the numbers of her husband, who has steadily maintained a favorable rating of about 40%, public opinion of the first lady has varied. Melania Trump's popularity peaked in early May of this year at 57%, following her first official State Dinner in late April, a public coming-out of sorts for the extremely private first lady. It was also on the heels of Trump's solo trip to Houston, Texas, to attend the funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush, where she posed, smiling, for a photograph with living former presidents and first ladies, many of whom have icy relationships with her husband.

A June survey, taken weeks after the announcement of her "Be Best" initiative and her subsequent hospitalization for a kidney procedure, which kept her out of the public eye for almost three weeks, Trump maintained strong favorable ratings at 51%. This most recent poll is still 13 points higher than the first lady's lowest polling numbers, which occurred in January 2017, days prior to her husband's inauguration; at that time, her favorability stood at 36%, her unfavorable at 35% -- 23% had no opinion of her at all.

These new numbers reflect Trump maintains her strongest support from older, white, male Republicans and conservatives, while her biggest detractors are women, mainly younger and those who are college-educated.

While the drop occurs across the board, it is bigger among the President's detractors. She is down 6 points among those who approve of the job her husband is doing as President, yet she's down 11 percentage points among those who disapprove. She has lost five points among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, but 13 points among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents.

The biggest decrease for Melania Trump is among liberals and white college-graduates -- down 17 percentage points each.

In recent weeks, Trump has been more visible, often appearing side-by-side with the President at events, as well as accompanying him during travel to Argentina for the G20 Summit. The first lady has also been more vocal about policy issues, making longer, more detailed speeches on the opioid epidemic.

But she was also criticized after an October ABC News interview when she said women who accuse men of sexual misconduct must have "hard evidence." She did say she supports women who say they have experienced sexual abuse.

She also made headlines for claiming: "I could say that I'm the most bullied person in the world." Melania Trump weighed in on immigration during the interview, as well, saying she was "blindsided" by the administration policy separating children from their families at the border.

The poll was conducted for CNN via telephone by SSRS, an independent research company. Interviews were conducted from December 6-9 among a sample of 1,015 respondents.

Melania Trump Just Can’t Shake Michelle Obama’s Shadow

On the same day the current First Lady visited a children’s hospital in D.C., the former FLOTUS did the same in Colorado.

As the Daily Mail pointed out, Melania Trump also spent Thursday visiting children at the Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. The Mail insisted that Obama “overshadowed” Trump in her hospital visit, in an extremely Mail-like attempt to start some kind of feud between the current and former First Lady. (With Kate and Meghan getting ready to spend Christmas together, you have to work on your new story lines.)

Trump also read to the children on Thursday, but the coverage of her visit was mostly full of quotes from her Fox News interview with Sean Hannity on Wednesday. She said that journalists were “using [her] name or [her] family name to advance themselves,” and that they were “writing history, and it’s not correct.”

Melania Trump's spokeswoman speaks out

By Stephanie Grisham (the girl's Chief of Staff)

(CNN)In yet another unnecessary attack on the first lady, CNN contributor Kate Anderson Brower, who purports to be an expert on the customs and norms of first ladies and yet has never met Melania Trump, wrote Thursday that Mrs. Trump "proved that she doesn't understand what it means to be first lady."

This condescending opinion, apparently written in response to a single answer Mrs. Trump gave in a Fox News interview Wednesday, was published just hours after the first lady traveled to Children's National hospital in Washington to read a Christmas story, visit sick children and thank the hardworking hospital staff.

CNN has a dedicated reporter who covers Mrs. Trump. But the media consistently ignores the first lady's work on behalf of the people of this country, and children in particular, in favor of more trivial matters. And my defense, here, of the first lady will certainly draw criticism and be framed as another assault on the press, but this predictable reaction won't make my observations any less true.

This holiday season, Mrs. Trump has made every effort to spread joy and good cheer to citizens across the country. In the past week alone, Mrs. Trump participated in a Toys for Tots toy drive, visited service members and families from three different branches of the military, and flew out to an aircraft carrier for one of the visits, in addition to her time with patients at Children's National hospital.

But rather than focus on these engagements, the good work of the organizations her visits highlighted or the sacrifices of those who serve in the United States military, Brower and other members of the media chose to focus on a soundbite from a 20-minute interview -- and a trivial poll released by CNN. For Brower to claim that Mrs. Trump's interview was "a lost opportunity to put attention on families of struggling Americans she's met in her role as first lady" is to willfully ignore everything she has actually done to help and support children and families across the globe as a commitment to service she has consistently demonstrated over the past two years.

When Brower claims Mrs. Trump has no understanding of what it means to be first lady, she intentionally ignores all the effort the first lady has put into fulfilling the traditional responsibilities of the role. For example, she has hosted a successful state dinner and dozens of holiday events at the White House. She has led restoration and preservation efforts in the residence. She has welcomed numerous foreign heads of state to the White House. And, most recently, she has represented the country at a state funeral.

In fact, in the past two years, Mrs. Trump has visited several hospitals, both at home and abroad, and visited with children in immigration facilities in Texas and Arizona. In the wake of the hurricanes that devastated Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Puerto Rico, she traveled to the affected areas to support recovery efforts -- and she partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to issue a public service announcement.

Mrs. Trump comforted shooting victims in Las Vegas, Parkland and Pittsburgh, and thanked law enforcement personnel and first responders for their heroic efforts during times of national tragedy. She has carried her "Be Best" message -- a message of hope and empowerment -- to children in the United States and around the world. She has emphasized the urgency and severity of our nation's opioid crisis with visits to Lily's Place in West Virginia and multiple newborn intensive care units, where she conducted listening sessions before the cameras to shine a light on successful Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome programs across the country.

As part of the broader effort to reduce addiction, she has spoken to thousands of young people about the dangers of drug abuse. She has met with major technology companies to understand the challenges that each faces in the effort to address unsafe or irresponsible behavior online, and has encouraged children to practice digital civility. Each event in her comprehensive "Be Best" initiative is focused on helping children with the many issues they face today. Yet, somehow, she is still characterized as a "reluctant" first lady.

Of course, absurdity abounds in the media's coverage of our first lady. Reports focus on the trivial and superficial, rather than the deeper issues facing our country that the she has tirelessly worked to address. Last year, when Mrs. Trump traveled to Texas to comfort and support the people affected by hurricanes, the media focused on the pair of heels she wore to board Air Force One.

When she announced "Be Best," her campaign to help children all over the world, the media criticized her for focusing on the importance of safe and responsible behavior online, presumably because they disagree with her husband's use of Twitter. In doing so, the media fumbled a critical opportunity to highlight the many inspiring children, families and programs Mrs. Trump mentioned during her speech. News personalities and outlets use the "Be Best" hashtag to taunt her about her husband, instead of focusing on the underlying message of kindness and compassion the campaign is intended to convey.

The list goes on. When Mrs. Trump invited children from a local Boys and Girls club to help plant vegetables in the White House garden, the media chose to focus on the cost of her shirt and the fact that her shoes were clean. Ironically, this same garden had been the focus of significant media attention when some speculated that it would be destroyed simply because it was an initiative led by the first lady's predecessor, Michelle Obama.

When the first lady traveled to Lynchburg, Virginia, to speak to more than 10,000 college students about the dangers of opioid abuse, the media chose to focus on an off-the-cuff answer that she gave regarding Christmas décor at the White House. The Christmas decorations were mocked last year, and no one is surprised that she is being criticized for them again this year.

When she partnered with the US Agency for International Development and traveled to Africa for a four-country goodwill tour that focused on children's health and education, conservation efforts and social and cultural issues affecting each region, what did the media focus on? Her clothes.

Whenever Mrs. Trump sits down for interviews, she inevitably gets attacked for her honest answers. I could continue with examples, but will inevitably be attacked for having a "woe-is-me attitude" -- it couldn't possibly be that we are defending ourselves. The simple fact is that Mrs. Trump deserves honest reporting and media coverage that focuses on the substance of her message: the importance of helping children grow up to be happy, healthy and socially responsible adults.

The role of first lady brings with it unique opportunities to help people across the country and around the world. This is not lost on Mrs. Trump. She has and will continue to demonstrate her commitment to helping children and advancing the causes she is passionate about. But there is nothing wrong with staying true to herself along the way. In fact, her strength, individuality and integrity should be celebrated.

The media also has the opportunity and responsibility to report fairly, accurately and without bias. They are, in fact, writing the first draft of our nation's history. In many ways, they are failing to measure up to this responsibility. This failure must be addressed.

(Oh! There's more...)

Ms. Brower's piece criticizing Mrs. Trump has this headline: "Melania shows she's a Trump through and through." At least she got that part right. Hopefully, the media will eventually learn to celebrate a woman who, through all the noise, is able to hold steadfast to her mission and stay true to herself. Regardless, Melania Trump is proud to be the first lady of the United States and is proud to represent the American people.

Oh and overall I think FLOTUS is OK as carrying out First Lady duties. Its the grifting on the side that's appalling.

by Anonymousreply 458December 17, 2018 5:27 PM

Michelle was a real First Lady. Her husband was honestly elected. She has a solid education and worked as a lawyer.

Melania is a fake first lady whose husband cheated and lied and was likely not legally elected. She supported his birtherism lies and has sold her soul for cash. I despise her and all the trumps. They are grifters and cheats. No matter what she wears she looks ugly to me.

by Anonymousreply 459December 17, 2018 5:32 PM

First of all. gross understatement about Michelle having a "solid" education. She has a TOP CLASS education.

Secondly. Melania is a grifter. And there are many kinds of intelligence and I'm not sure she is completely bereft. I also don't think Trump is dumb. He's clever and very damaged. Maybe that could apply to Melania.

Melania "Birther" Trump looks dead inside. Her clothes wear her. As someone said above, they are simply costumes meant to convey her position. They might as well be on a dressmaker's dummy for all the life she gives them. She's just a clothes hanger. Michelle Obama, OTOH, wears the clothes. Michelle might not always get it "right" but she is about so much more than her clothes that it doesn't matter. She is Michelle Obama, her own woman, not some gangster-equivalent's show wife.
