The opening scene of the film version of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" where George and Martha (Burton and Taylor) enter their house after a night of heavy drinking. In the darkness, Burton's form is seen flicking on the lightswitch and, as light floods the room, Martha (Taylor) squints, and so do we. Though Liz was considered one of the most beautiful woman in the world in 1966, she is almost unrecognizable: harsh makeup, her hair in disarray (a wig, actually), about 25 lbs heavier than normal (and bloated from the character's alcoholism), and in a very frumpy dress, the expression that comes ro mind is "rode hard and put away wet". 1966 movie audiences who might have been expecting another Taylor/Burton vanity flick (like the previous "Cleopatra") realized they were in for something very different.

Yes, R22. I always thought that if it had been between a man and a woman, it would have been obvious the other fell in love with Gatsby/Leo then and there.
Nick finally sees him in all his glory at the climax of Rapsody in Blues and then the fireworks start.
I had to wonder if Nick was a bit in love with him. If he felt more than friendship.

R37 I always took that as a given in the book. Haven’t seen the movie.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 8, 2018 1:07 PM |
It's definitely a given in the book. It's toned down in the movie. In fact, the only hint that Nick is gay in the film is when he's referred to as "artistic" and a gay character gives him a second look.

David Bowie in Labyrinth.

What a fun thread.
Agree with Gatsby/Leo- pure mega-movie star entrance. Btw, I know it's hated, but I LOVED Baz Lurhman's interpretation of "The Great Gatsby". I understood his approach to capturing the damn near uncapturable and I think he succeeded.
Anyway, as beautiful as Ingmar Bergman is, in "Casablanca" her first entrance into Rick's isn't iconic; it's what she was wearing : the classic Orry-Kelly white skirt suit. Seeing it for the first time was my first costume design eyegasm.
It remains my all-time favorite movie gown/suit.

R126- The thing that is striking about that entrance is it reminds me how they really missed the boat with that character. It's almost like they were trying to make Orlando Bloom the star of the piece but if they had taken out some of the goofiness of Sparrow and given Depp more depth and backstory with Jack, the whole character could have been more durable.
